COVER STORY
New year style revival Wo r d s
JA N E R O C CA
EDWARD URRUTIA
A
home styling reset is a perfect start to a new year, as nothing is quite as uplifting as changing it up indoors. Doing it right in 2022 all comes down to colour, texture, appliances and objets d’art – tapping into new trends. According to leading interior stylist and Westfield Direct ambassador Steve Cordony, who also runs masterclasses, revamping with colour – whether it’s for one room or an entire home – is an ideal starting point. This year it’s all about earthy tones, such as rusts, grass green, soft baby sage and plenty of neutrals. For those keen to plug into brighter scenes, it’s all about dirty purples, stronger blues and vibrant yellows – the jolt of happiness in the home we’ve all been waiting for. “Colour is a great starting point for creating an interior and layering your home from there,” Cordony says. “I love a monochrome base and stick with neutrals in a palette of white and grey, and will always add an accent colour. “Colour is great for a feature wall and makes a space more playful and fun.” Stylists often talk about the importance of texture, and they’re not necessarily referring to carpet and curtains. Texture can be introduced into every room. Whether it’s a timber chopping board in a white kitchen or a stoneware coffee plunger on display alongside a ceramic dinner set, it’s all about introducing different finishes. In the lounge room you can add velvet cushions to a linen sofa. “People tend to think of texture as wallpaper and bed linen – soft hero

materials in the home – but for me, texture is about thinking about every element you’ve got and focusing on that,” Cordony says. “Juxtapose brass cutlery with a glass vase; a marble coffee table can hold a timber bowl. It’s about mixing elements and being clever in the way you deliver a layered and textured story in the home.” Wallpaper is still big in 2022, but wall dressing is all about graphic prints for wow factor. “Romanticism is back in a big way,” Cordony says. “You’ll see stronger graphic texture on walls in the home, from wallpaper itself to wall murals.” Some of his favourites include IKSEL Decorative Arts and de Gournay hand-painted wallpaper. “Seeing a soft, baby-pink wall that leads to an amazing menagerie scene of animals, monkeys and palm trees brings graphics into the dining room or powder room. It’s statement dressing and a trend we’ll see this year,” Cordony says. Appliances have never been more in demand in the home than since the pandemic began, and this year is a chance to dial up what’s on show. Cordony suggests investing in a decent air purifier, having lush cosmetic appliances such as a hairdryer and hair straightener on display in the bathroom and, when it comes to objets d’art, turning to artisan and handmade pieces. “People don’t want something you can get everywhere,” he says. “Having a sculptural piece on display – whether it’s a ceramic on a mantel, bedside table or coffee table, you can wow with a fabulous item. “Vases are also a must – perfect for florals and greens – and don’t forget to update your coffee table books.” ●

Hugh Allen Fine-dining magnet Vue De Monde is changing it up in 2022, bringing in a new menu where local produce is king and embracing local clientele. Although souffle classics will always be on the menu, the emphasis is on native ingredients, unusual things you wouldn’t have tried elsewhere, and wine-matching experiences. “Thirty to 40 per cent of our clients would be international guests visiting Melbourne, but now

we’ve seen 100 per cent locals get behind us,” says head chef Hugh Allen. “We sold more wine and Grange bottles than ever before in the past year, and more than what international visitors would ever buy.” A renovation is on the cards for mid-year, more Australian artworks will be on display, and French silverware and glassware will be swapped for local artisan pieces to channel modern Australiana.

Edwina Murphy Marketing manager, Peroni Nobody serves Italian dolce vita like Melbourne can – hence why Peroni has committed its biggest budget spend to our city in the past five years. The official beer sponsor of the Australian Open tennis has now moved into prime position at the Australian Grand Prix, announcing a partnership with the Aston Martin F1 team. “Melbourne is our biggest market, so it makes sense to invest here,” says marketing manager Edwina Murphy. “The millennial audience aspires to live an elevated life. Head office knows the importance of Melbourne.”
Events guru David Abela has long championed our city as the place to be when it comes to global investment. He had an advising role in French couturier Chanel making its Melbourne retail debut some 20 years ago, and Italy’s Gucci sponsoring the VRC’s Spring Racing Carnival for 10 years. In 2022, he’s all about keeping that momentum going, working with the best in the business to maintain Melbourne’s reputation. Whether placing Japan’s Nikka Whisky in Melbourne’s upmarket bar scene, working with the Australian Grand Prix to lock in lucrative sponsorship deals or launching the Hyatt Centric hotel off Flinders Lane, Abela is all about encouraging overseas brands to splurge here at a time when others might be cautious to do so. “Globally, international brands have always had a strong presence in Sydney, but we helped break down the barrier and shortened the time between interest in Melbourne and execution of events here,” says Abela, the founder of 3 Degrees Marketing. Bringing Chanel’s boutique to Melbourne’s CBD was his first breakthrough as an ambitious 23-year-old. “Chanel understood Melbourne as a serious contender to Sydney and we helped them activate here,” Abela says. “When Gucci first came to me it was because they knew I cared about Melbourne and our city. I’m often a mediator when it comes to what they’ll do next.”

He has worked alongside F1 gun Lewis Hamilton, singer Harry Connick Jr, actor Goldie Hawn and model Shanina Shaik – and the advertising dollars followed. There have been Rolex events, Bottega Veneta fashion soirees and Gucci boutique parties with A-list celebrities aplenty. “I’m a pulse check on what’s going on in Melbourne,” Abela says. “These brands genuinely want to understand how Melbourne customers are feeling and want to be here, in our market, in these times.” The Melbourne-born businessman is opening a new restaurant, Untitled, in Richmond this month, in a joint venture with Andrew Ryan and Daniel Vid (Ugly Duckling, Melbourne Pub Group). ●
Sally Capp “We have a lot of confidence about the future of Melbourne,” says lord mayor Sally Capp. “We appreciate we’re still in a time of turbulence as we transition to the new rhythm of what we are as a city, but looking at where investors are putting their money, overwhelmingly they choose Melbourne. “Whether it’s commercial or residential developments and new hotels like the Marriott Docklands and Meridian coming soon, it should give us a sense of the positive momentum. “March in Melbourne is all about Hamilton coming to the theatre and Melbourne Fashion Festival returning to the fashion capital of Australia. It’s representing the creativity and hard work of a sector that is so important to us – from the makers to the retail sector and events that help deliver it.”

usical theatre’s rising star Maggie McKenna was 12 when they first heard Alanis Morissette’s Grammy Awardwinning album Jagged Little Pill. It was in their best friend’s car, and they recall feeling struck by the rebellious lyrics of You Oughta Know. Now, the 25-year-old takes to the stage as Jo in Jagged Little Pill, the musical with music and lyrics by Alanis Morissette, inspired by her 1995 album’s iconic hits, from a story by Oscar-winning writer Diablo
Cody (Juno). Leading the cast is Natalie Bassingthwaighte, alongside Tim Draxl. The musical has an action-packed soundtrack and a storyline that explores a seemingly perfect suburban family striving to hide the cracks beneath their surface. “My younger self wanted to be just like Alanis – I thought she was so cool,” McKenna says. “I already thought Alanis’s lyrics were incredibly moving and complex when I first heard them, but this musical heightens just how incredible

her lyricism is,” says McKenna, who saw the Tony Award-winning show in 2019. In 2016, McKenna moved to LA to study musical theatre, and the experience was culturally confronting for the 18-year-old, who was suddenly in the thick of Hollywood and away from family. “It’s quite full-on living there. It taught me a lot about my own strength and what I was capable of,” McKenna says. Best known for a lead role in Muriel’s Wedding the Musical, McKenna also performed in a US
tour of Dear Evan Hansen before the pandemic hit. Born and raised in Melbourne, McKenna is the child of Gina Riley, who plays Kim in Kath & Kim, and television producer Rick McKenna. They’ve given McKenna sound advice when it comes to surviving in the theatre and TV fields. “My parents have always been big advocates of creating your own work if you’re not getting it,” says McKenna, who grew up listening to David Byrne and Fleetwood Mac with their dad. “I am always writing, creating and hustling – you just

have to. Nothing is guaranteed in this career, but you can control part of what you do, and you can make great work.” It was the inclusive nature of Jagged Little Pill that appealed to McKenna, too. They were bullied at school and would once have never considered coming out as non-binary. “Gender is such a journey, and it’s different for everyone,” McKenna says. “I struggled with it in high school and was very confused about who I was. As I got older, I had a lot of privilege because I could hide behind this identity of a woman, but inside I

didn’t feel like that. Coming out more publicly has been incredibly healing for me; it’s connected me to a wider trans and non-binary community. I wish I had done it earlier.” But McKenna is well aware of the pressure to advocate now that they’re in the spotlight. “You are thrown into an activist position when you are part of a marginalised group, for sure. I think there should be many more roles in stage that are not conforming to a gender binary, and there should be more positions in our industry higher up and available to these marginalised people too because representation saves lives.” ● JAGGED LITTLE PILL \ Playing at the Melbourne Comedy Theatre through February and March. igh-end home buyers seeking luxury, tranquillity and convenience in an exclusive precinct need look no further. Nearing completion, Heyington’s 12 garden residences offer a rare combination of space, outlooks, peace, privacy and proximity – all bywords for luxury living in 2022. Ideally situated, these threebedroom residences are moments from Toorak village on one of the blue-chip district’s most sought-after streets, riverside Heyington Place. On foot, it’s just two minutes to Heyington train station, with an easy 11-minute commute in and out of the city. A four-minute walk takes you to elite schools St Catherine’s and St Kevin’s College. After considering the requirements of premium home buyers, developer Sterling Global worked with Carr Design Group and Acre Landscape Architecture to design homes that offer the character, features and
space of gracious traditional houses. Kay & Burton projects director Damon Krongold says the resulting residences are exceptionally wellproportioned and intelligently designed for living and entertaining. “Empty-nesters, returning expats and busy professionals have fallen in love with Heyington,” he says. “They understand the importance of living well.” Krongold says the roomy layouts give residents an abundance of space. An extra-large ground-floor garden residence is available, as are two penthouses and several mid-level homes. Interiors range from 166 square metres up to 323 square metres; prices start at $3.295 million and rise to $5.9 million for the largest penthouse. Purchasers have the advantage of inspecting the built residences by private appointment. “Heyington represents an outstanding opportunity for home buyers to act swiftly to take
advantage of a rare opportunity,” Krongold says. “Furthermore, buyers can move into what is one of Melbourne’s most elite addresses from April.” Portuguese limestone finishes the four-storey building’s classic facade. A three-metre setback from the street and meticulously curated, wraparound gardens provide privacy and seclusion for ground-floor homes. Invisible from the street, the two penthouses on level three are wrapped in glazing to optimise sweeping views across the eastern suburbs and the city skyline. Each of the 12 residences has high ceilings and two to three aspects, maximising outlooks, natural light and fresh air. With en suite bedrooms, multiple living zones, fireplaces, powder rooms

and separate laundries and sculleries, the layouts more closely resemble high-end traditional houses than apartments. The largest residences feature a flexible living space for a formal lounge, library or den. The single-level basement includes two private three-car garages for the penthouses, two to three on-ground car spaces for the other residences and large storerooms. ●

Shrouded by shrubbery, this Edwardian mansion appears steeped in the respectability for which Kew’s Sackville Ward is renowned. It’s all nice and prim until you step into the games room – ’Ullo, wot’s this, then? The billiard table built by Alcocks for the Rolling Stones, who lugged it all over Australia so they could stroll their bones around its vast length after shows. That table now looks resplendent in a room of aquamarine brocade, which opens to a gallery and then to a poolside terrace and gazebo outdoor kitchen. Designed for good times, this zone is one of two extensions made by the owners of this extraordinary house, whose four children have held parties among the ferns, tumbling into the blue mosaic pool and cooking on the gazebo’s teppanyaki grill and barbecue. An ornament to the street since 1912, the house has nine communal rooms, including the gazebo, gym and library. Certainly, the bay window music and dining rooms, with their tiered, mirrored mantelpieces, confirm a cosy sense of tradition. Beyond the L-shaped hall, modernity – with Edwardian styling – takes over. The family-meals area, almost 12 metres long, has polished floorboards and a tiled fireplace below leadlight fanlights. A french door leads to the garden. The provincial-style timber kitchen has an AGA stove, Gaggenau cooktop and Miele dishwasher.
