I started following Melbourne businesswoman Alex Pike on Instagram (along with 32,000 others) because she has a cheerful habit of documenting her morning walk around her neighbourhood. In a world saturated by filtered videos of 20-somethings belting through an expensive PT session, I felt more of a connection to a woman, nearer my age, who was advocating whatever movement made you happy. Pike is launching a health and fitness program that embodies her sunny philosophy on feeling good at any age. She is candid, a realist and warm – and this week’s cover star. ●

utumn racing is back at Flemington this month, with added nostalgia. On Super Saturday, March 12, and The Seppelt Wines All-Star Mile on March 19, the emphasis is on family-friendly entertainment. (The third event in the trio, Australian Guineas Day, was on March 5.) The Elms site will be converted into a fairground, with artisanal food and beverage stalls, a maker’s market, carnival rides, activities for the kids and plenty of live music. With top DJs and acts including Jungle Giants, Bag Raiders and Art vs Science performing on the front lawn and kicking on at Party After the Last, Flemington is pitching itself as a destination beyond the racetrack barriers. Among the stallholders are gourmet sausage specialist Peter Bouchier, Dan’s Empanadas for Spanish pastry and the Country Women’s Association’s nostalgic cakes and baked goods. Calendar Cheese hits the spot with its speciality selection and Nico’s Deli elevates the experience of a trackside sandwich. There really is something for everyone in the market stalls. Browology is available for free touchups on the day, Grown Florist is a stop for race-day posies and Bloom Brew is targeting skin and wellness needs. Cate N Jina’s macrame stall is where you learn the art of knotting string in patterns to make decorative pieces. Glamour and dressing up in style is still the emphasis for members. Book to dine at The Byerley from $225 per person (the menu includes lamb tartare, jamon paletilla, prawn and scallop ravioli, and coconut-chocolate cardamom tart). The Dining Room starts at $195 per person. Expect a menu of hot-smoked trout, free-range chicken and maple poached pears. The tiered Atrium is $175 per head, and here autumnal produce is the focus. Think figs in prosciutto with honey and ricotta, slow-cooked lamb shoulder and barramundi with lemon butter. Victoria Racing Club chairman Steve Rosich says welcoming full-capacity crowds back to Flemington is a moment he’s keenly awaited.

lex Pike is a self-made businesswoman who left her modelling career for nursing, but it took a body and mind transformation in 2019 to discover a new way of being. Now, the mother of three, who made a name for herself as one of Melbourne’s most in-demand cosmetic injectable nurses and gained a huge social media following with her refreshing and honest take on the practice – hand-in-hand with documenting her long daily walks and mindfulness – is taking other women on a fitness and wellness reboot that’s an adjunct to her own self-discovery. The former Dolly magazine cover girl (she appeared as a 12-year-old in 1990 after her sister sent in a photo for a competition) signed to agency Chadwick Models soon after, and was whisked into a world of fashion, where how you looked determined what opportunity came next. Flick through any of the ’90s editions of Dolly and Girlfriend and you’ll find her towering beauty in plenty of covers and shoots. “I was a teenage model, so aesthetics was always part of my world; I knew how important it was to look good and present myself through image – it’s what I did,” Pike says. In the ’90s she remembers meeting INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and his wife Paula Yates (when she was pregnant with Tiger Lily) in Byron Bay. Life was moving at lightning speed. However, her parents – a pharmacist and a nurse – encouraged her to study nursing, to have qualifications for a life after modelling. By the time Pike turned 21, she was working at a Cabrini hospital and had a career epiphany. “I fell in love with the plastic surgery ward and found my place,” Pike says. “I was looking after abdominoplasty, facelifts and blepharoplasties, among other procedures. I felt like this was my calling. I stayed there for three years while I finished my bachelor’s degree.” About to get married in her early 20s to her now ex-husband (with whom she had three sons), Pike tried Botox for the first time on the advice of a doctor she worked alongside.
“I was still working as a model and was so impressed with the results. It got me interested in exploring the world of cosmetic injecting,” she says. These days she splits her time between her businesses in Albury and South Yarra, with a trip to see Sydney clients every 12 weeks. While injectables rule her world, she’s motivated beyond the cosmetic but does admit it’s the boost women primarily seek. She opened her first clinic in Albury with a group of doctors in 2011. Five years later, along came South Yarra, around the corner from where she boarded at Melbourne Girls Grammar. Her Instagram is filled with motivational posts spruiking the powers of walking an hour a day and green juicing, and how practising gratitude saved her soul. “I have been quite open about sharing myself on Instagram,” Pike says. “I have worked hard to get where I am. I’m a single mother who has built my career and done that all myself.” Pike’s Inside Out Beauty, which starts this month, is an eight-week program with a mix of exercise regimens, diet and wellness. It is aimed at mothers who have lost their mojo and want to find their strength and get reacquainted with their life’s purpose. “I work closely with 10 women at a time and it’s important we have a space we can all be vulnerable and share what we’re going through,” says Pike, who also offers an hour-long Zoom meeting each week and brings in an expert to chat with the women. Upgrading to the so-called “inner circle” of the program includes a facial assessment and fillers. Pike joined the business syndicate ARETE – founded by Andy Friselli in the US – early on in her career, and says it’s the reason she’s motivated. She’s spent years attending self-funded conferences in the US and Britain, and it’s there she connected to the idea of self-development and self-worth. Although motivational speaking is part of her everyday mantra, Pike admits it took a lifechanging decision in 2018 to really find her purpose. She was one of the first Australian cosmetic nurses to work with anti-wrinkle
injectables in 2004 and says it was a determination to work for cosmetic surgeon Bryan Mendelson in Toorak that set her on a path of further exploration. “We looked after A-list celebrities, wealthy clients who would fly in from Hong Kong and Russia. I had four years with Dr Mendelson and it helped me excel in non-surgical treatments,” Pike says. “My business was very successful at the time and I was working hard and playing hard. “When I wasn’t parenting my children every second week, I fell into a pattern of drinking too much and was dragging myself through life and not training and taking care of myself.” Enter 75 HARD, a program created by Friselli, which she has completed a few times since 2019. She says it’s the reason she’s shed kilos and is toned and glowing, and she wants to impart that to other women who sign on to Inside Out Beauty. “It was a very difficult challenge,” she recalls. “But long stints of sobriety really took my energy levels to a different place and I have never felt so good since I stopped drinking. Alcohol isn’t part of my lifestyle any more. It doesn’t suit me in any way and I feel better for it.” Pike learnt to meditate, commit to cold therapy and wakes with a thank-you shout to the universe. Her Instagram tracks this daily approach. “I am turning 45 and have been very fortunate to have a lot of great experiences in my life,” she says. “I would say it was [ultra-marathon runner] David Goggins’ book that really inspired me. The fact he got through failure and adversity and found his strength resonated with me. While our life stories are different, I certainly had to find my path and make decisions to turn my life around.” But surely the motivational inner voice likes to have a sleep-in and switch off from time to time? “There are days I don’t want to do the walking,” Pike says. “But making the commitment to myself has made me a better parent, a better human, and by ticking off those small daily actions every day, I am a better friend to myself, too.” ● ● insideoutbeauty.com.au

ublin is the capital of a country close to many Australians’ hearts. With its cobblestone laneways and an iconic river running through the city centre, it’s not hard to feel at home in the place where many of our ancestors originated. Dublin has a Melbourne feel to it, in many aspects, with beautiful gardens sprinkled throughout and lanes and streets filled with unique stores and a glorious array of pubs and restaurants. Throw in the historical appeal of many European cities, with centuries-old churches, and a castle to boot, alongside all the Irish charm of the beloved Guinness Storehouse and Temple Bar. The best place in which to start a day in Dublin is St Stephen’s Green. An attractive garden located at the southern end of the city centre, it is ideal for walking off your jet lag and getting your bearings while learning about its history from the plaques dotted along the walkways. At the doorstep of St Stephen’s Green, you will find one of Dublin’s busiest drawcards, Grafton Street, the largest shopping district in the city. A walk along this pedestrianised thoroughfare is a great opportunity to see the local styles, pick up a memento and enjoy the many street acts.
Great craic in Dublin Trinity College Campus consists of beautifully designed classical buildings dating from as far back as the 15th century, and a walk through the campus gives a great perspective of the academic importance of the city. The Trinity College Library is not to be missed, and your breath will be taken away by a visit to the Long Room, which has more than 200,000 books and marble sculptures of important figures. A tour through the infamous Kilmainham Gaol is a time capsule of a more trying period in Ireland’s history. Many Irish revolutionaries were imprisoned and executed in its grounds. A guide will take you around and explain the history and relevance of each notable figure and their impact on the city. To complete a historical understanding of Dublin, visit St Patrick’s Cathedral – the National Cathedral

of the Church of Ireland, founded in 1191. This building is one to be admired. A 10-minute stroll away is Dublin Castle – the architecture alone is worth a walk-through. A must-do – and very much a “touristy” destination – is the Guinness Storehouse. Yes, every other tourist is there, and yes, it is the most you will pay for a pint in Dublin, but the experience of walking through the beer-making process and the history lessons along the way are world-class. Finish the tour with a pint of Guinness in the Storehouse Gravity Bar, which provides unbeatable views of Dublin and is a pleasant place to rest your legs after walking the brewery’s seven floors. Temple Bar, in the centre of Dublin, is a great spot in which to end the day. With a huge selection of pubs in which to enjoy a traditional Irish meal and live music, a night out in the most famous precinct in Ireland is essential. ● COVID-19 TRAVEL ADVICE \ Proof of vaccination is needed to travel into Ireland from Australia.

Gardening expert Melissa King will be on the main stage giving plant advice and encouraging a new generational appetite for gardening and its health benefits, and will also be hosting growing workshops. The MIFGS ambassador says she gets the biggest endorphin rush working with plants. “Research already tells us that house plants can make you feel happy and healthy,” King says. “Filling your home with greenery not only makes you feel good, but just a few plants can significantly increase the air quality in a room. Plants around the home can make you feel calmer, more focused and positive about life.”

INGE JABARA \ LANDSCAPE
KIM CARDILLO \ THE MELBOURNE FLOWER SCHOOL FOUNDER
DESIGNER AND INGE JABARA
Kim Cardillo is usually hosting flower arranging workshops in South Yarra, but this year unveils a large-scale floral installation at the MIFGS Great Hall of Flowers. It’s a must-see for any bloom fanatic – brimming with florals and mirrors. She’s hosting workshops as well, and bookings are essential. “We’re designing a centrepiece in a large glass bowl using simple botanic materials and blooms,” Cardillo says. “Attendees can take their design home at the end of the day.”
LANDSCAPES FOUNDER
Inge Jabara, whose landscaping work has been seen on The Block and who won an MIFGS silver medal in 2019, returns to the Show Gardens with an energised new work. “My work is a simplistic feature garden with oatmeal and wheat tones, tall grasses with a lonesome chair and table nestled in the centre toward the back of the display; symbolising everyone at home over the last few years,” she says. The design includes two boulders cut in half that nod to Melbourne’s resilience during the pandemic. Jabara is working with 10 plant species as opposed to 40 in previous years, reminding gardeners that impressive spaces needn’t be overwhelming ones. Among Jabara’s notable works is the garden for The Block Brighton contestants Daniel and Jade in 2020.
CAROLYN BLACKMAN \ HORTICULTURALIST AND VIVID DESIGN CO-FOUNDER
Carolyn Blackman and her partner Joby have been MIFGS regulars since 1998. They’ve won Best in Show twice, and the Greenery Garden they created in 2016 was the highest-scoring garden in the show’s history. This year’s work, Apertura, has been three years in the making and features a melding of hard and soft landscapes.
They’ve grown an olive tree wall for their amazing installation, working closely with an espalier on the Mornington Peninsula. The monumental work is five metres long and three metres tall. The design mimics a Chinese moon gate, with the circular opening made of living plants rather than brick. “We convey that plants can be a part of the garden architecture. We love the colour of the olive tree, a silvery sage that is very calming,” Blackman says. ●

FEATURE HOUSE GLEN IRIS \ 9 SUNHILL ROAD 4

“No, not Summerhill Road …” is the classic refrain of Sunhill Road’s residents when explaining their address. A court at its northern end, walkable to the Gardiners Creek parklands and a minute from the Monash Freeway, Sunhill Road is secluded yet central to all the goodies of Glen Iris. It’s here that two creative types conceived this luxurious home for their young family. On three levels, with a lift, basement cinema, ground-floor living, dining and study, and retreat and bedrooms above, it’s a haven for tots to teens – and skaters. Those significant early fumbles on boards and blades can safely take place in the six-car garage, brightly lit and tucked underground. A collaboration by Orbis Constructions, Archtistic, ACRE Landscape Design and Nala Design, the house is a masterpiece of muted colours and curvy timber details. American oak, terrazzo and Elba marble grace the horizontals. Ivory and deep green walls counterpoint the pale grey cabinetry, timber slats and matt black handles. Even the oak door frames, neatly recessed, are exquisite. There’s a choice of main bedrooms, both with marble and porcelain twin en suites and walk-in wardrobes. The study has bookshelves, desk and window seat, plus an adjacent powder room. Follow the oak hall to the living and dining areas, warmed by a gas fireplace. Full-height glass sliders lead to a northfacing, crazy-paved courtyard garden. There’s inspiration – and space – for chefs in the kitchen, where twin Miele ovens are complemented by a

900-millimetre gas cooktop and marble island. Behind the sliding door is a butler’s pantry with a sink. Take the timber staircase (or the lift) to the first floor, where the carpeted retreat basks in northerly sunshine. At the front is the second main bedroom. Two further double bedrooms have wardrobes and share a marble bathroom. The basement has many pleasures, not least of which is the glass-fronted wine room which can be kept firmly locked. The cinema has a screen and cocktail bar. There’s also a mud room and a laundry with plentiful storage. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au
