There are a few parallels that Melbourne’s own singer-songwriter Vance Joy – real name James Keogh – shares with Lady Gaga. In 2015, his hit tune Riptide became the longest-charting song in ARIA history. It sat in the top 100 for at least 107 weeks, beating the 106 weeks of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face. He is such a humble figure that is hard to get your head around just how major his music is in a global context. In this issue, the Murrumbeena boy shares with Jane Rocca the unexpected inspiration behind his lyrics – it seems that even rock stars need their mums. ●

THEATRE Dimity Azoury has
swapped The Australian Ballet for a coveted role in musical theatre. By
I
JA N E R O C CA
n her musical theatre debut, The Australian Ballet’s principal dancer Dimity Azoury learnt how to sing while dancing. An American in Paris, in which Azoury stars, brings postwar optimism about love and romance to the stage. The four-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical is high on choreography, and a meatier plot line drives the narrative better than the 1952 movie, directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Gene Kelly, ever did. It’s also a chance for Azoury to share the lead with British Tony and Grammy Award-winning dancer Leanne Cope. Azoury is at her career peak, enjoying her 15th year dancing with The Australian Ballet, but admits it’s the first time she’s really pushed herself outside of her comfort zone for a role. “It is magical to be back on stage and a real joy to step into this role,” says Azoury, who was born and
raised in Queanbeyan, NSW, started dancing at four and now lives in Melbourne, where The Australian Ballet is headquartered. “An American in Paris was an intense period of learning for me. It was also the first time I heard my voice on stage through a microphone. That was a bit of a shock,” Azoury says. As one of the country’s leading ballet dancers and a principal soloist since 2019 for The Australian Ballet, Azoury has toured extensively across Australia and to cities including Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles. From performing in Graeme Murphy’s Swan Lake to dancing in Giselle and Coppelia, she reflects on her career with a new appreciation. “The London opening night of Swan Lake was a career highlight for me, and after the past two years of uncertainty, you look back with even more profound affection for what was,” she says. A calf tear six weeks before she had to perform in Giselle in 2017 was physically demanding on the dancer, but the chance to get back on stage a year later felt better without the pressure of injury. “Nobody really sees the injury side of life as a dancer,” Azoury says, adding that two years out of pointe shoes played havoc with her feet.
SIMON EELES
Changing genres “There was little I could do after a calf tear and I’ve had four in my 15-year career,” she says. “Injuries do come with ballet and I feel I spend half of my time rehearsing for roles and the other half preparing myself to rehearse.” She’s also back at university, studying a bachelor of biomedical science. Azoury shares her love of ballet dancing with her grandmother who never got to realise her dream. “She was offered a role with the Ballets Russes in Paris when they visited New Zealand, but she wasn’t allowed to join. She danced until the day she married my grandfather and moved to Australia,” Azoury says. She recalls watching An American in Paris with her mother as a child, and has been bingeing on Audrey Hepburn movies and studying actress Leslie Caron in an attempt to perfect her French accent. “I watched Leslie in the movie Daddy Long Legs in its entirety on YouTube just to get her accent perfect for this role,” Azoury says. “I loved her as a young girl, a huge inspiration.” ● AN AMERICAN IN PARIS \ State Theatre, Arts Centre Melbourne, March 18 to April 24. ● americaninparis.com.au

oving from his rental in Northcote to Barcelona, Spain, to be with his longterm girlfriend inspired last year’s hit single Missing Piece, yet James Keogh – who goes by the stage name Vance Joy – admits collaborating with his mother is also his secret weapon for success. “I don’t shy from the fact Mum helps me with some of my lyrics,” says Keogh, who took his stage name from two characters in Peter Carey’s 1981 novel Bliss. “Credit where it’s due.” The 33-year-old, who grew up in Murrumbeena and managed to crack the album charts playing the ukulele with the song Riptide in 2013, often asks his parents for input when it comes to occasional writer’s block. His mother works as a high school English teacher and his father in IT – and both are happy to share their ideas. Missing Piece, which generated more than 50 million streams (adding to Vance Joy’s 3.2 billion streams globally), would have sat as an unfinished demo if it wasn’t for his mother encouraging him to release it last year. It’s a nostalgic ode to relationships lost to FaceTime and Zoom when we couldn’t embrace loved ones during the pandemic. Before Keogh found success as a singersongwriter, he studied a Law/Arts degree at Monash University. In his younger days, he had his eye on Australian rules football, but swapped Saturday afternoon tackles for music, and it’s paying off. Best known for his introspective indie pop, Vance Joy tugs at the heart strings with music fuelled by a dreamy introspection. His 2014 debut Dream Your Life Away peaked at number one on the ARIA charts.

Vance Joy can’t wait for a road more travelled COVER STORY The man behind the global hit Riptide is also finishing
a studio album and reveals his songwriting secret weapon.
The song Mess is Mine features a line penned by his mother, and Fire and the Flood includes words his father shared over a text message. “I have some secret writing partners and sometimes I wish I could set up weekly chats with Mum about songwriting ideas,” Keogh says. “What you might not recognise as good thought can change when someone shares their perspective with you.” He says he fell in love with the art of songwriting as a teenager, influenced by parents who always fussed over lyrics. “That definitely interested me in wanting to write my own songs,” Keogh says. ”Dad would always sing songs in the car and get me to look at lyrics. “Whether it was a Go-Betweens song or a Jimmy Little cover, reading lyrics was part of the process he encouraged in me from a young age.
He managed to get back to Melbourne for Christmas, spent time at Newmarket Studio in North Melbourne to finish up some engineering on potential album tracks and even got to attend a friend’s wedding. The pressure to deliver is real but, unlike the second-album syndrome, Keogh is trying to find the right mood for this third. This is a guy who can sell out Rod Laver Arena and played 50 US tour dates at his peak, and he knows momentum is important to success. “Looking back, I probably felt more pressure after the success of my song Riptide than I ever have felt before, because the success that came with that song meant people wanted more from me that was kind of the same, but different,” Keogh says. “You don’t really know what will work in the end, but you can’t spend too much time dwelling on that either.”
He’s reading The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle, perhaps a sign of his own internal quest. Although touring is what he always wished for – and he will embark on a national tour in September this year, starting in Darwin and ending in Melbourne (with a Gippsland date in the middle) – he’s learned to be more present. “I totally believe many of the life lessons within the book,” Keogh says. “It’s powerful, but for me, it’s just learning how to employ them in your life.” For now, he’s soaking up life in Spain, riding his skateboard like the good old days in Melbourne and finding thrills in the ordinary. He’ll return to the US to do more studio work before a run at the European summer festivals. When back home, he always finds a spot at his favourite cafe. He might be instantly recognisable there in Northcote, but the locals leave him alone.
“I probably felt more pressure after the success of my song ‘Riptide’ than I ever have felt before … people wanted more from me that was kind of the same, but different.” His mother introduced him to literature. “She made me understand books and opened me up to a world of authors. That was formative for me,” Keogh says. He also says he’d love to record harmonies with his sister one day; she plays guitar and sings. When his dad bought him an electric guitar and amp at age 14, Keogh went on a mission, giving himself whiplash learning Nirvana’s grungy hooks and Metallica’s metal mania. When we meet over Zoom, Keogh is working on a new album. His last studio album, Nation of Two, was released in 2018 and the pressure to get his third done before he embarks on a national Australian tour in September is ever-pressing.
Keogh opened for Bob Dylan, toured with Taylor Swift and was asked by Pink to join her European tour. He also signed a five-album deal with Atlantic in America – a dream come true for someone who didn’t anticipate that posting a song to YouTube in 2013 would change his life. That song was Riptide. “Going on the Pink tour was definitely a career highlight; from the vibe of her band to the days off with the touring party in cities I’d never been before,” he says. “I was only doing a half-hour performance before her show but got to enjoy this moment, which really reminded me why I wanted to make a career in music.”
“Nobody knows who I am in Spain and I love that,” Keogh says. “When I’m back home some might recognise me as the guy who wrote Riptide but they don’t make a big deal of it,” he shrugs. “I’m not wearing expensive new sneakers because I made a lot of money from music. It’s just life as usual for me. “I haven’t cashed in just yet,” he adds, laughing. “Life still feels pretty normal.” ● VANCE JOY 2022 TOUR \ October 22, Lardner Park, Gippsland; November 26, Sidney Myer Music Bowl. ● vancejoy.com

The pioneers of mid 19th-century Melbourne had to be tough. Stomp that trail, clear that scrub, lug those stones to a sweet spot on the hill above the Yarra. Some 170 years later, only the strongest survive of the houses built on the original Crown allotments. Shipley Lodge, one of about 20 pre-1860s residences left in Stonnington, is a rare beauty of the 1850s. Two storeys tall and with a wide bluestone verandah, this curious classic mixes Georgian and early Victorian elements in a way that appeals to the current taste for the sleek and simple. Families of the 21st century can live here with ease. Original living and sitting rooms and a library offer beautiful places for parties and seclusion, and a modern renovation has graced the place with an expansive dining area and stone kitchen. Upstairs, three bedrooms and a study include a main suite. That said, the heritage hunters will relish the trip down the narrow staircase with all its vertiginous thrills. Baltic pine floorboards creak, steps slope and termites have chewed the old timber lace. Liveable though the property is right now, there’s scope for a luxurious revamp to help enshrine this piece of early Melbourne forever more. Shipley Lodge is well hidden by a walled garden. The side entry leads to a petite, L-shaped hall, left of which is the carpeted living room and its white marble fireplace. French doors lead to the wraparound verandah. The sitting room and the fitted library – white, with high ceilings – face each other across the hall.

51 Grey Street ’EILDON MANSION’ c1850s A landmark address in so many ways, its future offers the option to rescue, respect and re-define one of the city’s most majestic residences of 23 rooms. Originally Barham House, the property was extended and re-modeled by Reed and Barnes in the early 1870s. By 1877, renamed EILDON, it enjoyed a renowned reputation of its grandeur, beauty, the richness of its fittings and fixtures and for its significant allotment of some 2203m2. Many of these attributes remain intact today, including the land size, which in the context of the current era represents a huge inner city holding! The chance to acquire EILDON and to define its future is an opportunity of outstanding scope and scale, moments from St Kilda, Albert Park Lake, the sea and the CBD.
