The $189 million Olivia NewtonJohn Cancer Wellness & Research Centre at the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg opened in 2012. The centre is dedicated not only to VALE Olivia Newton-John’s devotion to care and research touched so many Melburnians.
The work Newton-John did away from the limelight is what truly stands as her legacy – helping those who needed it most.
When Newton-John walked into the Lyall Hotel & Spa in South Yarra a few days after it opened in 2002, she became a regular at the boutique hotel and formed a bond with its owner, Rowina Thomas. Their 20-year friendship saw them come together on many occasions –from black-tie galas to raise money for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, to being there while she performed Magic from the movie Xanadu at the Melbourne Cup in 2009. There were also a few trips to the Flamingo Las Vegas when NewtonJohn held a residency there between 2014 and Thomas2016.reflects on those moments with a tear in her eye.

But to the people she knew and worked with in her home town of Melbourne, the late Dame Olivia Newton-John meant so much more than her crystal-clear voice and dazzling smile. Melburnians will mourn the loss of the singer, actor and tireless advocate for cancer care and research with a state funeral – the date of which is yet to be announced as we go to Forprint.those who knew her personally, she lives on in their memories.

First diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, Newton-John spent the following decades committed to building a cancer research centre in Melbourne.
The Flourish PR founder says Newton-John’s humble nature captivated everyone she met. “Out of all the celebrities I’ve ever worked with, Olivia was the most selfless and most genuine,” she says.
“It was Olivia’s mum who said, ‘If you can help someone, you should.’ That convinced Olivia to work with Austin Health and put her name on the building,” Shiell says.

The Victorian minister for creative industries, Steve Dimopoulos, says Newton-John had “a genuine star power that shone brightly, both on and off the screen”.
Thomas was also there the last time Newton-John performed at the MCG in 2011 before a Demons-Blues clash, campaigning with the late AFL star Jim Stynes to raise money for the cancer centre. Thomas says away from her tireless campaigning, Newton-John loved to bring people together.
“The way she made people smile was like nothing I have ever seen before. She would walk the wards at her hospital without any cameras or media and go from bed to bed, talking to patients and theirAustinfamilies.”Health Foundation director Debbie Shiell spent the past five years working with Newton-John and is also reeling from the loss.
“One memorable night was the occasion of the marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle, when a few relatives and friends donned tiaras and made scones in her suite while watching the wedding.”

“She will be remembered for her warmth and generosity with a devotion to others that made a difference in cancer prevention, research and treatment,” Dimopoulos says.

“It was a huge advantage to all the other blokes who were inside the rooms, so I named about 10 players I wanted to chat to, and they came out and basically queued up.

hen a 17-year-old Caroline Wilson started working at The Herald newspaper as a copy girl in 1978, sports journalism wasn’t on her Wilson’sradar.father Ian was the president of Richmond Football Club, so it seemed an obvious fit, but she just wanted to write –regardless of the subject.
At pre-match footy functions she wasn’t allowed to sit with the men, instead with the wives of the players and coaches. She remembers one football media night she turned up and got sent to the kitchen – they She met Donohoe during cadetship classes at RMIT University, and the couple have been married for 33 years. Wilson says her husband has always been an incredible support.
She got her journalism cadetship at The Herald (which closed in 1990, merging with sister paper The Sun News-Pictorial to become the Herald-Sun), where she did numerous rounds, including in the now defunct paper’s women’s department. She did notice one thing about the sports journos though – they had a lot of fun. “They worked in a separate room ... and there was But as a cadet at The Herald in 1981, it took her now lifelong friend, journalist Corrie Perkin, to encourage her to write about sport, paving the way for the sports editor, Ron Reed, to take her “Lookingon.back it was a big thing to take a chance [on] a 21-year-old who didn’t really have a huge aptitude for reporting,” she says. “I was an average cadet, but I guess not the“Theworst.older I get, I realise how much of a big thing that was.” She became the second ever female journalist to cover footy in Melbourne, in what was truly a man’s world. She remembers once her chief of staff pulled her aside to tell her to dress better and to have a look at what her female colleagues wore.

As a female footy reporter in the 1980s, Wilson was banned from going into the male change rooms to do her job after the footy. This went on for years. “In 1990, when Collingwood was ascending mistook her for catering staff, because she was a woman.Whileit was tough at times because of her gender, she has positive memories of the time.
It was an emotional night for Wilson for many reasons, as her long-term chief footy reporter rival and friend Mike Sheahan inducted her.
“I think the show works because there is a spark,” she says. “We disagree with each other a lot, and it is genuine.” to their first premiership in decades, [then Collingwood president] Alan McAlister threw me out of the rooms during the finals and said if I wanted to interview players, he would bring them out,” she says.
“The kids found it hard, we all did.
“But, I honestly believe having them, and seeing life through a more rounded set of eyes, made me a better journo.”

The man who gave her a chance, Ron Reed, was there on the night, but died unexpectedly just a few months later in June, aged 74.
Earlier this year she was inducted into the Australian Media Hall of Fame at the Melbourne Press Club, an honour bestowed upon powerhouse journalists, including Laurie Oaks, Jana Wendt and revered political journalist Michelle Grattan. She is also a long-time presenter on Channel Nine’s Footy Classified , and says the show’s success hinges on the panellists being honest.

It’s Williams’ first album of new material since 2018’s Make Way For Love, which was an ode to a heartbreak that got the better of him as he came out of a long-term relationship while living in HeMelbourne.hasjustreturned from a European tour with fellow NZ artist Lorde, describing being in Rome and Croatia for the first time as “the ultimate buzz”.
He returns to Melbourne this month to start rehearsing for his tour, but whether he’ll settle here again remains to be seen. “Half of my band is still there, so I will always have a Melbourne connection,” he says. “The city has always been so supportive of my music.”
“Music has always been the most immediate language and platform for me to exist,” he says. “It has always been my first love and always will be, but to follow my nose into the acting world has also been a lot of fun. There is a lot of learning to be had, but I am happy to go along with it and take the opportunities as they come up.”

As an only child, Williams’ decision to return to New Zealand in 2020 was prompted by a desire to be closer to his parents. Wanting to sever ties with Melbourne after the relationship split might have spurred the move too. “I’m quite close with my parents, and the pandemic gave me a moment to appreciate what I have,” he says. It led to the writing of My Boy, an album loaded with sentimentality and reflection.
“My last record was a break-up record, and it was a horrible time for me,” Williams says. “Writing that album was the perfect way to get my feelings out.

It was an era that welcomed the piano to the centre of the room, and everybody gathered round for jazz standards, piano solos and sing-alongs.According to bar owner Jono Francisco, who opened Jono’s Piano Bar in Prahran a year ago, the renaissance of piano bars is no accident, with many punters keen to embrace the intimate setting for their night of escapism. His decision to open one was inspired by his late-father Luis’ 1960s jazz career in Hong Kong. A piano also formed a cornerstone of their family home. It passed on to Francisco when Luis died in 1973, and he has now found a permanent place for it at his bar.
“My father was a leader of a club called The Back Room in the ’60s in Hong Kong,” Francisco says. “It’s where all the international acts went, including Judy Garland, who sang with him, Matt Monro and Thelonius Monk. Dad was a composer who moved to Melbourne. After he died, Mum gave me piano lessons to see if I had talent.
