howbags chock full of sweet treats and toys, thrill-seeking rides, and the buzzing sideshow alley have long been features of the Melbourne Royal Show for the city slickers who go for a fun day out. But the heart and soul of the much-loved event lies with the farmers and producers who flock to the Showgrounds to share the toils of their hard work and extraordinary skill sets. Following a two-year, COVIDenforced hiatus, the Melbourne

Royal Show will be back in full force from September 22 for 11 days, showcasing the very best farmers, growers, breeders, riders, paraders, providores, bakers, winemakers, artists, apiarists and artisans. Show-ring announcer Lyndsey Douglas says it’s never been more important to recognise and celebrate our agricultural producers in the face of world conflict, the pandemic and increasing cost of living pressures. “As one of the most urbanised communities in Australia, the Melbourne Royal is a crucial

connection between producers and consumers,” she says. “In terms of consumption and farming, more and more people that buy their food are unaware of the processes behind the scenes; the people, the families, the level of integrity that goes into all of that. So, this is one of those few opportunities where those two worlds collide.” “I think the cool thing about the Melbourne Royal [Show] is you’ve got your apiarist there with their honey, the beautiful viticulturist there with his wine that he’s so proud of. You’ve got your olive oil maker, your sheep producer, your wool producer, your alpaca farmer there, physically talking to the people at the end buying the food and fibre and maybe answering some of those

questions and demystifying some of the processes.” The show brings the cream of the crop of producers together to crown champions and entertain the crowds. Sheep farmer Doug Deppeler from Derrinallum, roughly 180 kilometres west of Melbourne, is celebrating 50 years of exhibiting at the Melbourne Royal Show. Deppeler says he has many cherished memories, but none more so than when he won the Interbreed Champion Ram and the Interbreed Champion Ewe in 2010. In the show’s history, only one other breeder had won the double on the same day. “As a child, I saw a Melbourne Royal rosette as something truly special and having not won one for a few years, I would love to get another,” he says. Boronia-based canine exhibitor Emma Greenway, who began showing at Melbourne Royal more than 30 years ago, is the proud breeder of every registered dandie dinmont terrier in Australia. “The pinnacle of success in Australia is to win Best in Show at Melbourne Royal. It has a very high value in my mind to be part of it and to win it. It just has such a buzz about it,” Greenway says. Crowds gather in the main arena for all manner of shows and competitions, and Douglas is the voice that guides, informs and entertains them. “I have insane notes on every possible breed of horse and cattle and sheep so that anything that’s thrown in front of me, I can make sure I’m really across it to give them their moment in the light,” she says. “Your whole job is to get people fascinated with the story of how much work goes into it, and … to give people a sense of colour, too.” ● MELBOURNE ROYAL SHOW \ Melbourne Showgrounds 22 September-2 October. ● royalshow.com.au

fter long-time A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw announced her retirement from the show recently, Lauren Phillips began to reminisce about the start of her own career. ACA gave Phillips her first break in television and the entertainment business 16 years ago when Grimshaw was just one year into her hosting gig. “I went to a general casting call at Nine and put an audition down on tape after a family friend recommended me, and I had no idea about what I was doing,” Phillips says. I was just a kid, and it was so much fun. They got me to do fashion and events reporting on A Current Affair Affair, and they gave me a start, and I will always be grateful.” Years later, Phillips, 34, is a survivor in the cutthroat entertainment world in Australia. As well as long-running hosting jobs for Nine on Kids WB, Postcards, Australian Open tennis and as the weather presenter for Weekend Today – a role she quit at the end of last year to focus on her radio career. She is now the co-host of the KIIS FM breakfast show alongside Jason Hawkins and her long-time friend, sports presenter Clint Stanaway. “We are really comfortable with each other as we have grown into the show,” she says. “It’s been a huge change for me, and going from television to radio has meant I’ve had to learn a completely different skill set, but we have had a great year.” She spent nearly six months working seven days a week to juggle both the Weekend Today and KIIS FM roles before deciding she needed more work-life balance.

Lauren Phillips is set to host the My Room Telethon for children’s cancers.

For a good cause Phillips grew up in Glen Waverley, and while she didn’t set out to have a career in the entertainment business, her family were not surprised. “I was never a shy kid, that’s for sure,” she says. “I grew up doing musical theatre and performing arts at school, and I was a bit of a talker, so my parents aren’t surprised I went down this path. “I pinch myself every day with the career I have.” Phillips and her radio co-host Stanaway will host The Footy Show: My Room Telethon on Thursday,

September 22, during a busy grand final week. The My Room Children’s Cancer Charity raises muchneeded funds to cure childhood cancers. Phillips and Stanaway hosted the My Room Ball at Crown in late August and are hoping to raise a lot of money during the telethon. “Clint and I are so excited to host the telethon,” she says. “Over the years, I’ve done many hospital visits to sick children, and something like the telethon can

make such an enormous difference to kids who are dealing with so much.” My Room Telethon is an important part of grand final week in Melbourne. Phillips believes this year Melbourne will get behind the telethon and grand final week, after such a tough couple of years. Finally, things are getting back to normal. “There is so much going on [this] week, and it’s exciting; it’s great the My Room Telethon can be a part of the week,” she said. ● THE FOOTY SHOW: MY ROOM TELETHON \ Thursday, September 22, 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

M

elbourne is home to many talented, smart and inspiring women. Some we know about through their work in the media, their accomplishments in business and their presence online. But there are also those you may not have heard much about, who work steadfastly to inspire other women and bring their work to the fore, to stand up for social justice and encourage the next generation and to effect real action toward environmental sustainability. We spoke to three Melbourne women who are making an impact locally and internationally.

University of Melbourne.

Azmeena Hussain was inspired to study law after seeing her mother struggle with Australia’s legal system as she tried to separate from her husband and keep custody of her children. In 2021, she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her services to the community of Victoria and the law. Hussain is an advocate for women’s rights and now steps into a new role as an ambassador for Football Australia’s Legacy 23, in the lead-up to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, hosted by Australia and New Zealand. An aspiring runner in her teens, she’s excited to once again make sport a part of her already accomplished professional life. “Becoming an ambassador for Football Australia’s Legacy 23 push is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for me. It’s a chance to leverage and showcase women’s football and what we have to offer on a global scale,” Hussain says. “Being a Muslim woman from a diverse cultural background who wears a hijab, this role increases the chances of more women taking part in football, and it’s about creating opportunities for women from all walks of life. “I did have a mini career in cross country running. I was fortunate enough to grow up at a time when Cathy Freeman ran on the track and drew a lot of inspiration from her. She was a huge role model for me. I pursued a career in running and won a couple of gold medals in state titles, but it was always a lifelong goal to pursue a career in law. I could outrun my brother – comedian Nazeem Hussain. “I wanted to become a lawyer after our mother had a difficult time navigating the legal system when Dad left her and went back to Sri Lanka. Mum was subjected to a range of domestic violence incidents and had to navigate the legal system to have access to her kids and property. It was a hard fight for her.”

She’s one of Australia’s leading art curators based in Melbourne and works as a professor in fine art and music at the Victoria College of the Arts. Natalie King helps promote the work of female artists on the global stage and was nominated for the AFR 100 Women of Influence in 2018. “I am the only Australian to have ever curated two national pavilions at the prestigious Venice Biennale – first with Tracey Moffatt at the Australia Pavilion in 2017 and with Yuki Kihara for the Aotearoa New Zealand Pavilion at the 59th incarnation in 2022,” says King. “It’s the first time a Pasifika, transgender and indigenous artist has been selected. I had seen Yuki’s work over the years. I fangirled her on social media and she eventually agreed – with persistence on my behalf.” Kihara’s work for the 2022 Biennale, entitled Paradise Camp, looks at decolonisation, intersectionality and environmental crisis. “Tilda Swinton walked into the pavilion transfixed by the work. Because she is so translucent and extremely non-binary in her appearance, she was so moved by Yuki’s work. The photographs represent Samoa’s fa’afafine third-gender community in an affirming way and tell stories that have been overlooked. King says her work at VCA keeps her grounded and also involves mentoring the next generation of up-and-coming visual artists. “I tell my mentees not to worry too much, to nurture themselves and create opportunities.” It’s King’s job to make sure an artist has the resources they need when presenting their work. “Next up, I am working with Aboriginal artist Destiny Deacon. We … have been working together since the early ’90s,” King says. “She has been commissioned to make a new work in the UAE, and I am helping her realise that work.”

Lucianne Tonti Author, consultant for sustainable designers in Australia, Europe and the USA and The Saturday Paper fashion editor.

Lucianne Tonti has worked with designers including Stella McCartney, KitX and Romance Was Born to help them ensure their clothes are made in the most sustainable way possible. Tonti left Paris in March 2020, where she ran her showroom and agency, to return to her hometown of Melbourne. Her debut novel Sundressed is a compelling deep dive into the world of fashion and its sustainable ambitions. The book sees her dissect the complexities around what is eco-friendly and circular, how brands can become more sustainable, and why natural fibres matter. Her world is one of hope, where she makes the connection from agricultural practices to the finished product to help us better understand the spin cycle around us. “I felt determined to find the positives when I started this book,” Tonti says. “I had worked in fashion for such a long time and the designers and stylists I worked with spoke about it all the time. We knew about the impact of fast fashion on the industry and how bad it was for the environment. “We still know things need to change. What inspired the book was realising there was a gap between knowing things had to change and understanding how they needed to change,” she says. “I had been engaged in thinking about that change since my honours thesis at Melbourne University (Political Science). Back then, sustainability was about mitigating harm and then I discovered regenerative agriculture and made the connection that we could connect that to natural fibres in fashion. It was a beacon of hope. “There are two forces running in Australian agriculture – we have cotton farming and wool farming. We grow 85 per cent of the world’s wool – which is almost a monopoly. Both of those fibres have an enormous potential to be grown regeneratively – especially wool, and there are lots of farmers doing best-practice here and have been de-grazing for years. “The biggest step we can take as consumers is to reduce our consumption … when you want to buy a cotton T-shirt, buy the best quality you can afford and inspect how long it will last. Focus on natural fibres. Polyester holds onto stains and holds body odour … it’s easier to care for natural fibres. ●

hen Australian soprano Ali McGregor first heard The Call, an original story told by Auburn Sheaffer on The Moth podcast, it led to her buying the rights and writing an opera, which makes its stage debut at Brisbane Festival this week. The Call & The Human Voice is based on the true story of a drug-addicted woman living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the early 1990s, left with a crying baby and nothing but a phone number to dial. When she dials the number, a random act of kindness changes everything. McGregor called on her friend, singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke and composer Connor D’Netto to help compose the opera. The Call sees McGregor deliver the blows, one operatic high note at a time, depicting a woman in her bleakest hours.

“Kate has been on my radar for years,” says Ali McGregor of teaming with Miller-Heidke. “She is operatically trained, and I have a huge respect for her as a musician. We actually met as guests on Spicks and Specks – filming on the same day for different episodes – so, it made sense for me to ask her to be involved.” McGregor was drawn to the many themes in the narrative, from social injustices, addiction, poverty and human loneliness. “Kate and I could also relate to Auburn’s privileged upbringing and the opportunities it can afford us when it comes to education. But when Auburn got out into the big wide world, she saw everything else – social injustice and racism, which she was protected from growing up. When I read her story, I thought it was only circumstance that this didn’t happen to me,” McGregor says. Three little words – Hartwell Primary School – make the magic that wafts families to this quiet corner of Camberwell. They like what they find. They discover Lynden Park and homes such as this gabled 1920s pile, which promises a sweet life of tennis matches at sunset. With five bedrooms, four communal areas and a study, the spacious classic has room for all to find fun and a peaceful spot for homework. The lap pool and spa have a northerly aspect and a covered deck for warm-weather entertainment. And don’t be deterred by the “tennis” in north-south tennis court. This synthetic-grass tract is a safe space for kids learning to cycle, shoot hoops and play Sly Fox, as well as swinging around like the Girls’ Own Annual “racqueteers” of 90 years ago. Owned by the current family since 2006, the two-storey house has been handsomely extended. Original rooms include the front sitting room and main bedroom, with their curvy bay windows and panelled ceilings, and the first floor’s four double bedrooms. A dining room, a family-meals area and a contemporary kitchen offer spaces for many moods, from cosy introversion to summer revelry. The open-plan area has multifold doors to the deck, which looks over the tennis court and pool. The porch has typically 1920s double doors to the wide hall, which has typically 2020s storage and a powder room. To the left, another pair of doors lead to the sitting room. One room along, glass doors give entry to the dining room, currently a lounge with a fireplace flanked by windows.
