Oh Melbourne, winter has not been kind this year, I know. But spring has (sort of) sprung, and the longer days make for more exciting nights. Even if the season has been slow to start, the spring events have well-and-truly kicked off. One of the biggest on the calendar is Melbourne Fashion Week, when the city plays host to established and emerging designers, along with up-and-coming models and VIP guests. One of this year’s ambassadors is our cover star, model Sophia Bana (yep, Eric’s daughter), who told us about the start of her career and the excitement to come during the springtime of her life. ●

No set formula ART Artist David Bromley on
S
ix-time Archibald Prize finalist David Bromley is set to open a new museum in Castlemaine, featuring some of his prized art by other painters and sculptors, along with his own work. Bromley, 62, bought the former Old Castlemaine Gaol with his wife Yuge in 2019 and has spent the past three years renovating it. The Bromley Collection is due to open to the public as a museum and art precinct by the end of the year. “The museum will be filled with our collection of art,” Bromley says. “We have collected everything from Japanese ceramics to mid-century pieces and modern Australian artists and sculptors. It’s an environment we have done our way, with our

own funds, and it puts a smile on our face.” The heritage-listed jail, built in 1861 and active until 1990, has been renovated inside and will feature a large outdoor sculpture sitting area. Some artists on show include the Townsville-born sculptor Owen Broughton – best known for his large bronze works – who died in 1984. There are works by Charles Blackman (who David also painted for the Archibald in 2002) and pieces by local graffiti artists – including Gore and Lucky Lucks – and largescale contemporary art by Tom Gerrard. French painter Bernard Buffet is another favourite. “Art needs to find a way in these esteemed places and not just remain where people expect to find it,” says Bromley, who started as a signwriter at the age of 15. He moved to Australia with his parents and brother in 1964 and has lived everywhere from tropical Queensland to regional Victoria. Following in the footsteps of surrealist artist Salvador Dali, Bromley has also dabbled in perfumery, making his fragrance debut with three scents – floral, noir and oriental – with the Bondi Perfume Company.

playing by his own rules.
DAVI D A N D Y U G E B R O M L E Y
When he launched his fragrance in 1983, the Spanish-born Dali copped much flack for commercialising his art to the perfume world – with particular criticism from French writer, and co-founder and principal theorist of surrealism Andre Breton. “I am a huge believer that you aren’t doing things properly unless you attract some criticism,” says Bromley, who paints large-scale murals, dabbles in urban development art and has collaborated with wine brands in the past. Decades of painting mean his sense of smell has virtually gone, but with the help of Yuge, he was able to create the range, as memory plays a part in formulating fragrances. “I love the irony of creating a perfume and having no sense of smell. It went years ago, but I know what I like, and I did get my family involved in the process,” he says. Being surrounded by art inspired
Bromley to consider creating the fragrance packaging to exist beyond the obvious. The Bondi Perfume Company deal allowed him to create bottles and artwork that deserve a shelf life beyond what’s inside. “The perfume bottle is another vessel, so I view it as an art form,” Bromley says. “I am all about making fragrances attention-grabbing and beautiful, and the Bondi Perfume Company delivered above and beyond what I could ever expect from a commercial collaboration,” Bromley says. “I like to do things that serious visual artists aren’t supposed to do. It’s like the bending of the rules can only be done a certain way for you to sit well in the art world. I call that nonsense and do what makes me feel happy and inspired.” ●

ophia Bana, a dancer turned model, has landed her first major ambassador role as the face of Melbourne Fashion Week, alongside First Nations singer-songwriter Thelma Plum. She’s the daughter of Australian actor Eric Bana, but the 20-year-old is wooing fans in her own right – and is on a mission to bring a young audience to embrace the runway in the city this October. Bana is also in her second and final year at Transit Dance School in Brunswick, where she dances 40 hours a week, but is swapping contemporary dance moves for fashion during an action-packed week of style in the CBD. “I started dancing when I was two and a half years old, and I don’t really know any different; it’s what I have always done because I love it,” she says. “Unfortunately, I did year 12 in lockdown and never got to dance in my final year. Sometimes when I think back, I do feel gutted, but I know I have been much luckier than others, so I just accept it for what it is.” Finishing at Loreto Mandeville Hall in Toorak, Bana was encouraged by her creative parents to pursue dance. It was also during this time she was offered a fashion contract with The Talent Buro when a friend introduced Bana to the agency. “Modelling has always interested me, and it’s very similar to the dance world, so I thought I would do it. I am excited to see where it goes and relying on my agent who knows the industry well,” Bana says. Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp says the festival’s diverse choice of ambassadors and VIP guests is aimed at luring more people to the format.
“I want to have a go at everything and put a lot of pressure on myself to be both ambitious and hard-working.” “Nurturing the next generation of creatives both on and off the runway is important to us,” says Capp. “That’s why we continue to seek out new opportunities to work with and host emerging local talent. Sophia Bana is a multitalented, up-andcoming creative, and it’s been fantastic to see her career as a dancer, and now model, unfold. “We look forward to seeing her f launt her youthful vibrancy and unique style throughout the week.” Also joining the festival are VIP guests bayside TikTok star Harvey Petito and First Nations social inf luencer Allira Potter. Potter is excited to see diverse body shapes and First Nations brands on the runway this season and is thrilled to make her debut at MFW in the same

year that Plum performs on the runway. “I think Fashion Week plays a huge part in being an inspiration for people to think and dress outside of their comfort zone,” Potter says. “I also think Instagram plays a huge part for people to be inspired by fashion, too.” Petito, 18, spends his weeks chasing fashion calendars around the globe, is often invited to collaborate with luxury fashion brands and, with 1.6 million followers on TikTok, is thoroughly enjoying life in the fast lane right now. “A lot of local brands have adopted TikTok as a key marketing space, which I love as it allows smaller-scale brands to really get their name out there and get seen,” Petito says. “My social media success has changed my life as it has not only allowed me to pursue my passion and chase my dreams, it has also allowed me to inspire people to do the same.” Bana says her mother, photographer Rebecca Gleeson, has been a guide when it comes to understanding the camera and how to work it. “Mum comes on shoots with me as a photographer and has been helpful with advice, too. Both of my parents are really supportive of me.” Until now, Bana has spent her life away from the limelight, with parents who kept her and her older brother Klaus, who is studying film and television at VCA, away from red carpet events. Though she has grown up with a famous father, he’s still just “Dad” to her. “I remember watching Finding Nemo and I didn’t know that Dad was in that movie,” she says. Eric Bana voiced one of the sharks – Anchor – in the film, alongside Barry Humphries’ Bruce. “He would always impersonate the character at the dinner table, and I would be like, ‘Dad, that isn’t such a great impersonation.’ Dad would then reply, ‘That was me, Sophia.’ That was probably the first time I felt weird knowing it was Dad who was acting in a role in a movie I loved,” Bana says. “To be honest, I don’t watch many of the movies he’s acted in. It takes me out of the moment, and I feel so awkward because I am like, that is weird, you’re just my Dad, that’s not who you are at home.” But seeing her father do what he loves has certainly inspired Bana to be just as ambitious. “Getting to see someone be so passionate about what they do has definitely had an impact on me feeling like I can make a living by following my dreams, too,” she says. Bana, who plans to travel to the US next year and enrol in some acting classes, too, says a European summer in 2023 is also on the cards. “I want to have a go at everything and put a lot of pressure on myself to be both ambitious and hard-working.” ●

Top drops for spring
Five winemakers share their favourite vinos to sip in the sun.
S
pring is upon us, and that means turning your palate to new varietals and swapping your go-to wine for something different – because hasn’t it been the longest winter ever? Celebrate the new season with complex chardonnays, textural rosés, award-winning shiraz and minimal-intervention wines from regional Victoria and beyond. With complex aromas of stone fruit and citrus zest, the Petaluma Yellow Label 2021 Chardonnay gets better with age. Senior winemaker Teresa Heuzenroedes says the vintage was a standout. “The chardonnay is a perfect transition to sunny days and pairs with lighter dishes. It’s full of fresh stone fruit, citrus aromas and flavours, and it has lovely fruit weight, concentration and vibrance.” Sourced from the cool climate conditions of the Adelaide Hills, the Penfolds Max’s Rosé 2021 is the premium brand’s modern interpretation of a drop it last made in the 1970s. According to Penfolds senior winemaker Steph Dutton, the new bottle is a
departure from their original style and is designed for celebratory times. “Reds are what we are known for, but with rose, we create a reason to open a new style of wine,” says Dutton. “It’s a regional wine with regional personality. Think watermelon granita freshness, white strawberry fruits as its sweet descriptor, but a dry, savoury finish on the palette.” The Mornington Peninsula’s Avani is a boutique winery all about minimal intervention – they use indigenous yeast ferments and minimal sulphur. “The 2021 Amrit Chardonnay has melon and fresh citrus on the nose and ripe fruit on the palate; it’s textural with a zippy yet elegant finish,” says Avani winemaker Rohit Singh, adding it will pair beautifully with a spiced whole snapper. Chapel Hill’s premium vintage collection includes The Vicar Shiraz, which just won gold at the 2022 International Wine Challenge. First released in 1993, this shiraz is an expression of the region, variety and winemaking process.

Chief winemaker and general manager of Chapel Hill Winery Michael Fragos says, “The Vicar is selected annually from the most outstanding vineyard parcels of McLaren Vale shiraz.” It pairs well with meat and salads. Sally’s Paddock was established in 1973 by winemaker Neill Robb and his wife Sally in the Pyrenees region of Victoria. Next year marks their 50th anniversary. From rain-fed minimumintervention vineyards to small batch picking, fermenting, basket pressing and barrel ageing, theirs is a world of recreating Bordeaux style blends using cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, malbec and merlot, adding the Australian element of shiraz. But why not try their Sasha pinot noir? Think rose petals and dark berry fruits while dark cherry lingers in the background. “The current 2017 vintage should be on the ‘to-do’ list of any red wine lover. This wine will take you back to a time when winemaking was an art form,” says Neill and Sally’s son, Huw Robb. ●

Off the beaten track T he gentrification of inner Melbourne has seen historic precincts transformed over the decades. Suburbs such as Richmond, Fitzroy, Carlton, Prahran, Port Melbourne, Abbotsford and Collingwood are now full of funky warehouse conversions, cleverly renovated terrace houses and striking architectural townhouses. They sit among a smattering of original homes, public housing, and semi-industrial and commercial buildings, all of which contribute to the eclectic feel and sense of community in these areas. What undoubtedly adds to their fabric and charm is the incredible array of historic pubs nestled into these neighbourhoods – hidden gems that have survived and continue to thrive. These treasures have been sanctuaries, social outlets, staunch supporters of local clubs and patrons, as well as venues where special occasions have been marked and celebrated. The Kingston in Richmond is one pub that has stood the test of time for 168 years. Sitting snugly between stately old terrace homes, it is both a locals’ favourite and a drawcard for footy fans and foodies. It recently reopened following a $1.5 million renovation that took the entire venue back to its bare bones to open up the public bar and build a sumptuous new restaurant, Marble & Pearl. Publican Jon De Fraga says The Kingston’s unique position is part of its charm.
“We’re lucky to be nestled away in a beautiful, quiet leafy street of Richmond yet only five minutes from the CBD and right next to West Richmond train station,” he says. “People love to find that hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle but easy to get to and from. “Being such an iconic venue to the area for over 168 years, the local community is the heart and soul of The Kingston. Having such a diversified demographic and clientele tends to lead to an array of quirky and colourful characters whom we all love and cherish.” The College Lawn, neatly positioned among homes in a quiet stretch of Greville Street in Prahran, is another boutique pub that has a heart. “It gives our venue more of a humble, wholesome feel as we are away from the hustle and bustle of Chapel Street,” says venue manager Kirsten Kent. “We have the perfect set-up for family outings, watching the footy in the beer garden or even just a quiet pint at the bar and a chat to our wonderful staff. Being away from a main thoroughfare, there is a strong sense of community, and our staff know our locals really well.” The statuesque 150-year-old The Standard Hotel in Fitzroy Street, Fitzroy, has been a drawcard for locals and uni students for decades. Publican Paul O’Bree says it’s a historical and social destination that allows you to feel relaxed.
“Many years and many experiences by so many have soaked into the brickwork and beautiful timbers of The Standard, and a lingering warmth and perpetual cosiness sees many returning when they have the opportunity. Hopefully the reputation brings just as many in for the first time,” he says. While many hospitality venues were sadly forced to close permanently due to COVID, these suburban pubs have endured the depression, wars and recessions to continue to serve their communities. “The COVID times were tough for all of us, but The Standard has stood the test of time for over 150 years, so when people needed a ‘fix’ of normality and to reconnect with friends when lockdowns finished, we made sure it was like they never left,” O’Bree says. “I hope The Standard provides many more decades of enjoyment to those who already know where to find us as well as continuing to be a wonderful example of a classic Fitzroy pub to all those who appreciate that a reputation and a soul take many years to build.” ●

orrento has always been a glitzy place. Channelling Italian seaside vibes, the town was a popular spot in the late 19th century when people liked to escape Melbourne’s summer heat to promenade along the pier. The town has had its highs and lows but its reputation is set to rise again with the reopening of the much-loved “Conti” – the historic limestone InterContinental Hotel overlooking the main street. On a sunny spring day, Sorrento is in sparkling form. Strolling along the clifftop walk to Point King – the Sorrento-Portsea Artists’ Trail – I wind my way past picture-perfect coves, beaches and boat houses. No wonder 19th-century artists were inspired by Port Phillip Bay’s prettiest corner.
Glitz and glam are here to stay in the sparkling seaside town.
For stickybeaks, the trail overlaps Millionaire’s Walk, which contains some of Victoria’s most expensive holiday homes. It seems strangely egalitarian as I wander along the public path that slices through the front gardens of these mansions. Back in Sorrento, it’s almost lunchtime. There’s a queue in front of the popular Buckley cafe. Coffee fans are calling into the tiny Flat Blk, and the new restaurant-cum-deli Stringers is filling up. Across the road, the Conti is busy too. After being closed for four years, the hotel has had a $120 million renovation by architects Woods Bagot. The 1875 building and its jazz moderne wing are looking smart, plus there are two new buildings, all run by the upscale InterContinental group. Food is a big drawcard here. The locals are flocking to the public bar and the streetside seating. The fine-diner Audrey’s, helmed by chef Scott Pickett, is wowing the foodies. Set on an upper level with sea views, the diner’s multi-course degustation menu champions local seafood and produce. It’s the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion, and I spy a few birthday groups and anniversary couples. Pickett, with publican Craig Shearer, oversees all the food venues – the sheer scale of these is amazing – including the relaxed Atrium restaurant.
This is all good news for local businesses. For example, gins by Bass & Flinders Distillery are showcased in the hotel rooms. Earlier in the day, I visited the back streets of Dromana, the distillery’s home of 13 years. It makes grape-based gins and brandies using local botanicals. Choose from a tasting session with cheese and charcuterie or book a masterclass to make your own gin.

Next door is the popular Red Hill Candle Company and its range of scented candles and soaps. Here I see an excited group heading upstairs for a candle-making workshop. A visit to a winery is a must, and the Mornington Peninsula has more than 50 boutique cellar doors. Point Leo Estate and Montalto are two of my favourites, but I decide to go somewhere different – Polperro in Red Hill. The view of the vineyard from the deck is relaxing. At the end of a busy day, I check into the InterContinental Hotel, where I’m staying in a heritage wing suite with a magical bayside view. There are 108 rooms – the most atmospheric are in the original building. The Aurora Spa and Bathhouse, a large wellness centre, is due to open later in the year. Leaving the best till last, the guest-only swimming pool looks like a Great Gatsby scene – no coincidence because the Baz Luhrmann movie was an inspiration for the project, and some of the hotel’s carpets and wallpapers were designed by Luhrmann’s partner, Oscar-winner Catherine Martin. Flanked by cabanas, palm trees and colourful poolside chairs, the deck has glimpses of the bay – the perfect spot for a sundowner. ●

FEATURE HOUSE TOORAK \ 609 TOORAK ROAD 4

When Guilford Bell met Agatha Christie, there was no mystery afoot. The novelist was on a book tour of Australia, and Bell was the nephew of her friend Aileen, with whom she stayed in Brisbane. When in 1938, Christie bought her Devon estate, Greenway, she hired Bell – by then an architect in London – to renovate the Georgian house, which appears in Dead Man’s Folly. The pair got on so well that Christie invited Bell to go with her and her archaeologist husband on digs in Syria. From murder mysteries and the Middle East to Melbourne seems quite a leap, but not when you look at Bell’s body of work here, in the city where he practised for 40 years. Blink and miss the clues is precisely the look Bell was going for. In Toorak’s busy main road, this mid-century house is an enigma wrapped in a drab brick wall with roller doors. Beyond the arched gates is a sunbathed, north-facing estate with a pool, cabana and sauna, nestled in brilliant seclusion on 1115 square metres. The single-level house has ancient Syria’s secret courtyards to thank for its flow from living and dining rooms to the poolside terrace. Typically for its time, the communal areas are enormous, the private areas less so. But with renovated bathrooms and a floor plan to suit contemporary requirements, the house has ample potential for a decorator’s update. At the front, off the crazy-paved courtyard, is a family room (almost 10 metres long) with timber flooring. Beyond, adjoining living and dining rooms have back-to-back

’SOMERSET’ - Classically Canterbury c1928 Imposing residence with return driveway surrounded by some 2705m2 on one of Melbourne’s most revered tree lined avenues, substantial, traditional SOMERSET represents a remarkable opportunity. Its past has clearly delivered family success. Classical lines frame today’s formal and informal living zones against a backdrop where a heated pool, spa, gym/studio and flood-lit north-south tennis court emphasize the depth of the allotment. Further enhanced by botanical gardens, double garage and SOMERSET’S extensive frontage to an exclusive streetscape - landmark in every sense of the word.
