NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER NYDKC DIVISION ONE

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR LTG! Hi Division 1 Stingrays! My name is Dominic Bossey and I’m your new Division 1 Lieutenant Governor. Here’s just a bit about me: I live in Aquebogue, I am a senior at Riverhead High School, I love Disney, and I am obsessed with Grey's Anatomy. I have so many ideas for this service year and I cannot wait to meet you all. Just a few reminders: MRFs are due the second of every month and FRFs are due every time you do a fundraiser! I hope you are having a great school year and I cannot wait to see the work you guys do! Dominic Bossey, 2018-2019 LTG

STINGRAY REPORT DIVISIONÂ UPDATE

UPCOMING EVENT:Â ALL OF DIVISION 1 Hey Stingrays it's me Dominic! This year I am trying to plan a Battle of the Bands and I have put a lot of thought into it! So far I have been contacting bands across the east end and a few seem interested! If you think you would like to help me out with the event I might put together an application for committee members! I would love to do it in March, but I need all of the help I can get! The date is totally not set in stone and I am still looking for an exact location.

RECAP OF FALL RALLY At our Fourth Annual Long Island Fall Rally, we raised $700 dollars for the Governor's Project Comfort Cases and we also heard from the founder of the nonprofit who came to speak at the event! We had over 100 Key Clubbers from across Long Island and it was so much fun! We had a K-fair where we got to know each other, really informative and fun workshops (I taught a few people how to tie a tie), and best of all we had pizza. Thank you to all of the Division 1 kids who came, especially Southampton because they brought so many clubbers.

A FEW WORDS FROM A MEMBER My friends and I had a lot of fun at this year’s Fall Rally. As a freshman, this was my first opportunity to attend and I must say it was very interesting being able to meet Key Club members from all across Long Island. The first workshop I attended was about the different positions in Key Club and how organization came to be. We discussed our role as members of Key Club, as well as how we can become leaders in society. The next workshop I attended was concerning social media and how it can be used in a positive way, there I learned how we can create social media accounts for our schools and division. We learned that through these accounts we can raise awareness for different events Key Club and our schools are hosting. Social media is a great way to teach other about what Key Club does, as well as increase the number of members.Â

A FEW WORDS FROM A MEMBER CONTINUED The final workshop I attended was informing us of teamwork and how if we work together we can be more productive. This workshop allowed us to interact with other members and work together for some friendly competition. The speaker was really insightful and informed us of how the sales and registration went to this really amazing organization, Comfort Cases, which provides items to children in need. At the K-Fair we played interactive games which allowed us to socialize with members from different divisions and make new friends. We even played a soulmate game, this game let us pair up with people who we had a lot in common with. The speaker was really passionate about his organization and was able to get everyone who attended very interested in his story about how and why he created the organization. Everyone I met at fall rally was extremely nice and passionate about Key Club. From this game, I had two soulmates and we all became instant friends. Overall, I’m really glad I attended Fally Rally. I had a lot of fun, got to meet some new people and even made a couple of new friends.

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

I believe our annual Friends of Karen fundraising plan is a great way to kick off the service year and transition into the holiday season. Friends of Karen is a charity that is extremely close to my heart, and it has touched the heart of everyone within the Westhampton Beach community. Friends of Karen is a charitable organization that provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Their core values of compassion, dedication, respect, integrity, and impact align perfectly with the values of Key Club and our mission to help others. Through weekly bake sales, we come together with baked goods and raise money. We divide the money into individual visa gift cards, allowing the children of Friends of Karen to buy what they want during the holiday season. As a team, our club makes personal Christmas letters to the families of Friends of Karen. In addition, we organize a toy Juliet Tomaro, Westhampton drive in order to give the children of Friends of Karen something a little Beach, Vice President, Senior extra and special. This experience, for everyone involved, is enriching. It serves as a great reminder to all about what the holiday season is about, and the joy that comes with giving back.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH DISTRICT UPDATES

LEADERSHIP TRAINING CONFERENCE 2019 LTC in 2019 will run from March 29th to March 31st and I cannot wait to see you all there! The theme will be ALOHA TO SERVICE, so be sure to grab your floral shirts and fanny packs. Let's go cocoNUTS at the Desmond!

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT FROM ACROSS THE STATE Our Key Club attended a trivia night at the Elks Club in Wilton on Friday, November 9th. Local businesses were invited to participate and all the profits from the night went to the Elks Veterans Committee and the Military Museum. Dinner, dessert, and tons of odd and interesting trivia questions were served through the course of the night. While there, we collected each participating company’s answer sheet and graded them to determine a winner in the end. We all were so happy to help in making this event run smoothly so that all the participants could enjoy their evening. The lively host and spirited teams created such an inviting and lively atmosphere. It was so much fun trying to figure out all the answers to the trivia questions before we were given the answer sheets to grade them. While helping, we learned so many new and unique facts that left us stunned, as well as learning how heated trivia can get when there’s a trophy involved! We were so happy to help and are so appreciative to have been included in this event! Mikayla Bader, Division 15, Saratoga Springs

DISTRICT NEWS 1. This year the District’s fundraising goal is $155,000. The service hour goal is 130,000. Our job is to help to contribute to achieving those numbers, so let's do all we can this year!

DISTRICT NEWS 2. Our Governor Erica Swirsky has chosen to support Comfort Cases as the Governor’s Project. This organization puts together small backpacks or duffel bags for youth entering the foster care system. It has impacted over 30,000 children and we can help change more lives!

DISTRICT NEWS 3. Our District Project is One Tree Planted! This nonprofit organization plants a tree for every dollar donated to help combat deforestation across the world. In North America they plant trees in Florida and California; they plant trees in Vietnam, India, Haiti, Brazil, and many many more places across the world too!

DISTRICT NEWS 4. Every year New York District Key Club promises to raise money for certain charities and this time I will be highlighting the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center. Kiwanis sponsored the construction of the KPTC at the Stony Brook Hospital and we raise money to help keep it going, so let'd get started! So far we've raised $680, but our goal is $2,250.

DISTRICT NEWS 5. Every month Erica Swirsky, our Governor, releases an issue of her Bulletin and each month it has a theme to follow. This month was HUNGER, so I hope we were all successful in making sure every person has a meal to eat! Be sure to also check out the Winner's Circle to see the awesome things other clubs in the District are doing. Go look for it on Issuu and search the New York District of Key Club International.
