FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER NYDKC DIVISION ONE

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR LTG! Hi Division 1 Stingrays! My name is Dominic Bossey and I’m your Division 1 Lieutenant Governor. Here’s just a bit about me: I live in Aquebogue, I am a senior at Riverhead High School, I love Disney, and I am obsessed with Grey's Anatomy. Congratulations to both East Hampton, Riverhead, and Southampton for having perfect paperwork; you guys are some of the first out of the 250 clubs in New York! To everyone that signed up for LTC, I cannot wait to see you! Dominic Bossey, 2018-2019 LTG

STINGRAY REPORT DIVISIONÂ UPDATE

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT This year, Riverhead Key Club decided to throw their own senior prom: senior senior prom. In early June, the club is going to the Acadia Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation to have a prom for the seniors who are there. There will be a makeshift photo booth with the theme being ‘Roaring 20’s.’ Some members from Key Club are forming a prom committee who will be making and setting up decorations that are safe but fun to use/have. Our main goal is to make sure the 50-60 seniors who plan on going have a good time. The club owes a special thanks to Kristina Cybulski, the main event coordinator, who is booking a DJ, the location, and provide the food and drinks. We hope to spread joy from student to senior and can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Lizzie Buckley, Riverhead Historian-elect, Junior

I went to cool workshops and had fun during play fair. I spent time with friends and the experience overall was significant to my role as a leader. It was exciting and I look forward to LTC this year. -Bhupati Ramkhelawan Southampton Treasurer

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT FROM ACROSS THE STATE

International Night was a fundraising event hosted by the NFA Key Club’s officers to not only raise money for the Thirst Project, but to bring mass awareness to the global water crisis. President Eliana Rodriguez, Vice President Annie Yang, Secretary Jacqueline Aquino, and Treasurer Linda Chen organized International Night to become a success and raised over $1,000 (the set goal for the event), all of which will be donated to the Thirst Project Organization to end the water crisis in Swaziland. International Night’s other objective was to highlight the diversity within the Newburgh community and to unite the community to garner support for such a great cause. Key Clubbers readily donated a plethora of ethnic food, all representing their cultural heritage. All together, over forty platters of food were donated and subsequently enjoyed by all two hundred attendees. In the time leading up to the event, over two hundred guests were reached out to in the community and across the school district. NFA Key Clubbers quickly spread the word through posters, social media, and by mouth. Linda Chen, Division 13, Treasurer of Newburgh Free Academy

DISTRICT NEWS 1. This year the District’s fundraising goal is $155,000 and we have surpassed it! We have raised over $157,000, but that does not mean stop fundraising! The service hour goal is 130,000 and we've served 71,000 hours so far. Our job is to help to contribute to achieving those numbers, so let's do all we can this year!

DISTRICT NEWS 2. Our Governor Erica Swirsky has chosen to support Comfort Cases as the Governor’s Project. This organization puts together small backpacks or duffel bags for youth entering the foster care system. It has impacted over 30,000 children and we can help change more lives!

DISTRICT NEWS 3. Our District Project is One Tree Planted! This nonprofit organization plants a tree for every dollar donated to help combat deforestation across the world. In North America they plant trees in Florida and California; they plant trees in Vietnam, India, Haiti, Brazil, and many many more places across the world too!

DISTRICT NEWS 4. Every year New York District Key Club promises to raise money for certain charities and this time I will be highlighting Kamp Kiwanis. We raise money to help keep it going, so let'd get started! So far we've raised $1006, but let's keep going!

DISTRICT NEWS 5. Each month our Governor, Erica Swirsky, puts out a Governor'r Bulletin to recap what she did in the month and highlight a certain service project or fundraiser. She also adds in a theme to help us come up with ideas in case we are stuck. This month's theme was Heart Health!

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES

INTRODUCING YOUR NEW I-BOARD Every year at ICON Key Clubbers from around the world elect our international board and this year was no exception. We voted on International President, International Vice President, and 11 International Trustees and let's get excited because one of our own New Yorkers was elected International Trustee: Braeden Dorchester!!

OUR INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE Alice Geng of the Minnesota-Dakotas District is our International Trustee. Like I do, she will act as a liaison except, instead of being a liaison for clubs, she will be a liaison for districts. Those districts (which are called sistricts or sister districts) are New York, Louisiana-Mississippi-West Tennessee, and Utah-Idaho. Alice also put out a video update on her YouTube Channel, so check it out to get the lastest news!
