OCTOBER NEWSLETTER NYDKC DIVISION ONE

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR LTG! Hi Division 1 Stingrays! My name is Dominic Bossey and I’m your new Division 1 Lieutenant Governor. Here’s just a bit about me: I live in Aquebogue, I am a senior at Riverhead High School, I love Disney, and I am obsessed with Grey's Anatomy. I have so many ideas for this service year. Thank you to everyone who attended Fall Rally; I think we all had a great time! Just a few reminders: MRFs are due the second of every month and FRFs are due every time you do a fundraiser! I've loved visiting your clubs so far and I cannot wait to visit all of you! Dominic Bossey, 2018-2019 LTG

STINGRAY REPORT

DIVISIONÂ UPDATE

As a new member of Key Club I believe the annual homeless night that raises money for the local homeless shelter (Maureen’s Haven) was a great way to start off my experience. At homeless night everyone sets up their camp for the night in the courtyard with sleeping bags and cardboard in preparation for the next 12 hours. We played fun icebreaker games that brought everyone together, my favorite being an intense group game of rock, paper, scissors. I believe this experience made many people talk to and play games with new people within the club which expanded the feeling of unity throughout. My friends and I set up our own campsite with snacks, blankets and board games which was so much fun, we even managed to get some sleep before morning. This experience was one of a kind and very rewarding and knowing that we raised $700. I cannot wait to be a part of more Key Club events that are this fun!

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

Brynn O'Connor, Riverhead Committee Chair, Senior

After three months of diligent planning and collaboration, Riverhead High School Key Club successfully hosted their Third Annual Safe Halloween. The event welcomes the children from the community to spend their night trick or treating through the school hallways, playing carnival games, and walking through a “not so spooky” spooky walk. This was my third and final year volunteering with Key Club at this event. Being a senior, I was appointed head of the carnival committee. With the help of my peers in my group, we came up with and designed games for the kids to play and transformed the school cafeteria into a carnival. The best moment during this event is at the very beginning, when the children first start to arrive with their families. I stand back for a second and watch the months of preparation come to life. It's such a fulfilling feeling to see the smiles of our guests and watching them enjoy everything we worked so hard on. With each new year, the success of this event grows. I know it will continue to prevail and provide the community with a forever tradition. I’m so glad I was apart of Safe Halloween from its very start. I’ll never forget the day the idea was first proposed back in 2016- and now look where we are! I’m going to miss this event so much, and I will think back to the heartwarming feeling it brings every Halloween!

NEWS FROM THE NORTH DISTRICT UPDATES

DISTRICT NEWS 1. This year the District’s fundraising goal is $155,000. The service hour goal is 130,000. Our job is to help to contribute to achieving those numbers and we are doing a fantastic job, but I know we can do so much more!

DISTRICT NEWS 2. Our Governor Erica Swirsky has chosen to support Comfort Cases as the Governor’s Project. This organization puts together small backpacks AND duffel bags for youth entering the foster care system. It has impacted over 30,000 children and we can help change more lives!

DISTRICT NEWS 3. Our District Project is One Tree Planted! This nonprofit organization plants a tree for every dollar donated to help combat deforestation across the world. In North America they plant trees in Florida and California; they plant trees in Vietnam, India, Haiti, Brazil, and many many more places across the world too!

DISTRICT NEWS 4. Every year New York District Key Club promises to raise money for certain charities and this time I will be highlighting the Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation. We raise money to help keep it going, so let'd get started! So far we've raised $623, but our goal is $1000.

DISTRICT NEWS 5. Each month our Governor, Erica Swirsky, publishes an issue of the Governor's Bulletin and each month she gives us a new theme to work with. This month was POVERTY, so I hope we were all successful in supporting those who need our help the most! Erica also gives us updates on all the things she has been working on in the past month, so you all should read it!

LEADERSHIP TRAINING CONFERENCE 2019 LTC in 2019 will run from March 29th to March 31st and I cannot wait to see you all there. The theme will be ALOHA TO SERVICE, so be sure to grab your floral shirts and fanny packs. Let's go cocoNUTS at the Desmond!
