MARCH-APRIL NEWSLETTER NYDKC DIVISION ONE

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR LTG!

Hi Division 1 Stingrays! My name is Dominic Bossey and I’m your new Division 1 Lieutenant Governor. Here’s just a bit about me: I live in Aquebogue, I am a junior at Riverhead High School, I love Disney, and I am obsessed with succulents. I am really excited to be your lieutenant governor and I have a few goals for this service year. I want to bring our 6 clubs much closer because I know, as an IP executive board officer, it would have been so awesome to work with other Key Clubs. Additionally, I have a division-wide goal of 4,000 service hours and $3,000 dollars in total fundraising, and I think it is totally possible to reach these goals, so let’s get moving!

Dominic Bossey, 2018-2019 LTG

YOUR INTERNAL EXECUTIVE ASSITANT Hi Division 1, my name is Brynn O’Connor and I am the Lieutenant Governor’s internal executive assistant. Both Dominic and I are juniors at Riverhead High School and love being a part of Key Club. I love to watch Big Bang Theory and the Crown. I’m very dedicated when it comes to my work, and I'm excited to work hard with Dominic to make the upcoming year in Division 1 a great one! I know he has planned big things for the clubs of the division and I am ready to be part of a team that makes these plans run smoothly. I can't wait to see the Division’s future progress and success!

Brynn O'Connor, Riverhead HS Internal Executive Assistant

DISTRICT NEWS On May 4th to 6th I went to the first board meeting and we decided A LOT of things: 1. This year the District’s fundraising goal is $155,000 and our service hour goal is 130,000; our job is to help to contribute to achieving those numbers so lets do all we can this year!

DISTRICT NEWS 2. Our Governor Erica Swirsky has chosen to support Comfort Cases as the Governor’s Project. This organization puts together small backpacks or duffel bags for youth entering the foster care system and has impacted over 30,000 children and we can help change these kids’ lives!

DISTRICT NEWS 3. Our District Project is One Tree Planted! This nonprofit organization plants a tree for every dollar donated to help combat deforestation across the world. In North America they plant trees in Florida and California; they plant trees in Vietnam, India, Haiti, Brazil, and many many more places!

MEET YOUR DISTRICT BOARD! Governor Erica Swirsky Hello NYDKC! My name is Erica Swirsky and I have the privilege of serving as your 2018-19 New York District Governor! I am a junior at Saranac Lake High School of Division 14. My term as Lieutenant Governor as well my experience at the International Convention really inspired me to run for this position. One thing I really want to focus on this year is increasing communication between the Executive Board and the club level and I want to provide clubs with a ton of new service opportunity ideas. I also want to expand the uses of our website and make it easier to interact with. Good luck to everyone this service year! I hope we can have the best year that the New York District has ever seen! If you ever need anything, feel free to reach out to me!Â

MEET YOUR DISTRICT BOARD! Secretary Trisha Melton Hi NYDKC! My name is Trisha Melton and I am serving as the District Secretary this year. Last year I served on the board as the Division 13 LTG. I can’t wait to continue my time of the board this year. If you ever need anything don’t hesitate and contact me at secretary@nydkc.org

MEET YOUR DISTRICT BOARD! Treasurer Amit Narang Hey Stingrays! Treasurer Amit here. I hope your Key Clubbing has gotten off to a great start, and I know we’re gonna do some great things this year! I’ll be working closely with you guys to ensure that we reach our Fundraising goal and that we have fun doing so! There’s a lot that I want to accomplish this year, and I’m really excited to share some of my goals with you. Firstly, I’m working on a fundraising website to eliminate the need to fill out FRF’s. Secondly, I’m reaching out to companies to establish a service-project fund within the District, which would allow more high schools to establish their very own serviceprojects in their communities. Thirdly, I’ll be working with individual clubs to establish their own fundraising goals for the year, which would increase communication between clubs and the District and allow us to raise even more money! Lastly, I’m working on establishing discounts for Key Clubbers! One deal is already in the works, so stay tuned for more information soon! Most of all, I’m excited to be a resource for you all. No matter how silly the question, always feel free to hit me up for advice, suggestions, or even just to talk!

MEET YOUR DISTRICT BOARD! Webmaster Unice Colon Hello NYDKC! My name is Unice Colon and I’m so excited to be your District Webmaster for this service year. As district webmaster, I will be here to update the NYDKC website and help you with any technological issues you might have regarding emails or projecting your presentations at board meetings. I’m always open to hear feedback on the NYDKC website, and if you have any suggestions you can contact me at webmaster@nydkc.org . If you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to reach out to me! I am looking forward to the amazing things we will accomplish this year!

MEET YOUR DISTRICT BOARD! Editor Fahad Nabi Hi Division 1! My name is Fahad Nabi and I am humbled to say that I will be serving as your 2018-19 District Bulletin Editor! Just a little bit about myself - I’m a junior at the Bronx High School of Science and my favorite Netflix shows include Grey’s Anatomy, The Office, Prison Break, and Empire! Besides service events, on weekends you can find me either cooking, reading my favorite novels in Central Park or scouting good eats around the city! As this year flies by, I hope to get to know each and every one of you and hopefully connect at next year’s Leadership Training Conference! However, until then, I am looking forward to serving my community and highlighting the impressive accomplishments individual clubs all around the district are capable of!

MEET YOUR DISTRICT BOARD! Internal EA Peter Alegre Hello Division 1! My name is Peter Alegre and I will be serving as one of two New York District Key Club Executive Assistants this upcoming service year. I’m excited to work with all of you! Prior to District EA, I have served my home club, Bronx High School of Science, as Secretary and Fundraising Committee Co-Head. As a junior, I have been involved with Key Club for 3 years now. In this service year, I plan to work with our newly elected Governor, Erica Swirsky, to bridge the gap between the District Board, the divisions, and its members through diligent supervision and empathic leadership that will strengthen our Lieutenant Governors’ impact across the District. To do so, I hope to streamline the efficiency of biweekly updates, maintain constant correspondence through calls and email, and digitize distribution of evaluations. Another goal is to implement a district penpal system to connect Key Clubbers across the District and divisions to create relationships and bonds to members outside of their own club.

MEET YOUR DISTRICT BOARD!

External EA Anthony Guan Hey Division 1 Key Clubbers! My name is Anthony Guan, and I am honored to say that I will be serving as one of two New York District Executive Assistants for the 2018-2019 service year! I am currently a Junior attending Midwood High School which is part of Division 9! Prior to being appointed as the District Executive Assistant, I served as the Bulletin Editor of my home club for the 2017-2018 service year. For this service year, some of my goals include improving both LTC and Fall Rally for the members to enjoy more and give them an ever lasting experience, form a stronger connection with the district board and members, and motivate more members to be active within Key Club. Some of my hobbies include being a photographer, going on food adventures in the city, hanging with friends, playing games and playing music! If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please don’t hesitate to email or contact me!Â

HOW WAS YOUR LTC If I could describe LTC in one word, it would be “eye-opening”. Coming from a small club on Long Island, I didn’t expect to walk into a room filled with hundreds of members from all over New York. Everyone attending shared a common goal to benefit our community. When the awards started I was amazed at all the remarkable things clubs have done, from Most Community Service to Excellence in Fundraising. All of these students are so dedicated to Key Club and being active members of the community. Workshops opened my eyes to all of the opportunities Key Club offers to help others in need, better yourself as a person, and be more than just a member. These workshops showed us how to get involved, from providing clean drinking water to people in need to helping women in third world countries provide for their families. Leaving LTC I wanted to make my small club the most it can Serena Robbins, Westhampton be, bringing Yuda Bands and the Thirst Project to our school allows us to Beach HS, Member give back and go back to Albany next year as better people.

HOW WAS YOUR LTC This was my first year at LTC and I think it might be my favorite experience of my life so far. As a Lieutenant Governor I went up a day early to undergo training and I met the other LTGs and just within those four days with them I have made so many amazing friendships. LTC showed me just how big Key Club really is; I always knew it was the “largest student-led community service organization in the world, but that only made sense when I was sitting in the ballrooms with 700 other kids. During the awards ceremony I got an award for Distinguished President and people I barely knew started cheering for me: I felt so proud of myself for being a part of an organization that lifts everyone up and congratulates each person for their contribution. I cannot wait to go back to the Desmond for some more fun and the Hawaiian theme of next year!

Dominic Bossey, Riverhead HS Lieutenant Governor

LTC 2019 LTC in 2019 will run from March 29th to March 31st and I cannot wait to see you all there. The theme will be Hawaiian, so be sure to grab your floral shirts and fanny packs and let's go cocoNUTS at the Desmond!

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT Out of all the events that the Riverhead Key Club has held this year, the “Pancake Breakfast” at Applebee’s was my favorite. The event took place as an opportunity to earn our club some money for upcoming events. Members of the club volunteered to work as waiters, ticket sellers, or kitchen workers. Family members and friends who purchased tickets came to Applebee's early in the morning to see the members of Key Club serve them as if they worked at the restaurant. All my friends and I were able to work together to get the plates out to the customers, as the orders started to come in fast! We avoided chaos by communicating with each other and helping others out when they were loaded with customers, just like a business should run. After the customers had eaten, they were able to participate in an auction. Businesses around the town donated gift certificates or other merchandise for the customers to raffle on. Overall the event was a success, and both the customers and “workers” had an amazing time! I knew it would appleBEE so much fun!
