Responsive Suburbia: dwelling and working in IJBurg Type of project: housing, thesis, individual Location: IJBurg, Amsterdam Supervisors: Nelson Mota (main) www.nelsonmota.com Ype Cuperus (secondary) Duration of project: 10 months Date of completion: June 26, 2013 (MSc.Arch) Responsive Suburbia is a project of 72 units, addressing housing in suburban areas such as IJBurg. Two dwelling types are distributed around the site forming clusters of live and work units. Apartments consist of free-standing, row, and semi-detached typologies, depending on their orientation. The capacity of these units to grow incrementally (‘responsive housing’) is a key feature of this project. Responsive Suburbia proposes an approach to the design of collective spaces, blurring the boundaries between public and private. The façade materialization corresponds with this notion as well as the idea of balancing individual expression with the community’s identity. The project has an activity strip located between the waterside and residential edge, consisting of landscape and recreational functions serving as a lively catalyst for the neighbourhood. Responsive Suburbia could be appropriated as a positive example for living collectively, and a healthy model for designing blank development sites such as IJBurg.

Bathouse: Type of project: public building, spa, competition, collaboration Competition name: “Renaissance of Retreat – Rebirth of the Bath house” Location: Liepaja, Latvia Duration of project: 4 months Date of completion: May 2014 The Liepaja bath house is part of a longstanding and rich tradition of communal bathing in Europe. Reactivating this bath house as a retreat destination begins with the relationship it has with the surrounding parkland and beach. The building endeavors to be a mediator between the spa experience and surrounding nature. The reactivation of the facility seeks to align the building with other historical bath houses. The baths of Pompeii remain one of the most iconic examples in the ancient world. As seen in figure C, the bath is nested within an urban block. The collection of rooms and courtyards are formed by the negative space left by the surrounding dwellings. This way, housing is given prime access to the surrounding city, while access to the spa is to retreat into a hidden world, removed from its surroundings. This basic relationship of dwelling and bathhouse is applied to arrange the building program. The spa becomes hidden from the world beyond, a place of seclusion and contemplation. Guests to the spa access accommodation and dining facilities off of the main spa floor and are welcomed by private views and access to the forest 14
and beach beyond.

Office in Eastern Docklands Type of project: office/civic building, individual Location: Amsterdam centre, Piet Heinkade. Supervisor: Engbert van der Zaag www.mir.nl Duration of project: 8 weeks Date of completion: June 2012 (MSc.Arch) The design project is an office building for a yet-unknown user and is located between the Oostelijke Handelskade and the IJ. The client is a large project developer that wants an efficient and easily rentable building, meaning that the design has to be suitable for one large-scale tenant and several small-scale tenants. One storey has to have ideally rentable dimensions; separation walls must able to be placed at intervals of 1,8 m (standard grid of 1,8 m for office spaces used); installation facilities should be easily accessible and maintenance requirements must be kept to a minimum with respect to the façade in particular. Every office space has to have an operable window as well as light and sun protection. These spaces must also accommodate flexible workplace installations. The following types of office spaces are required: single-occupancy rooms, 2-person rooms, 4-person rooms, quiet workstations, open-plan offices, and a variety of informal consultation rooms. The building has to be as energy efficient as possible. The client contemplates climate façades and concrete-core activation. The challenge primarily lies in designing something interesting within these “generic” parameters. 22

Reboot / Rescale Type of project: mass housing, refurbishment collaborated with Paul Mulder + Suzanna Weeda Location: Amsterdam South, Bijlmer district Supervisors: Olv Klijn www.fabrications.nl Caro van de Venne www.barcodearchitects.com Duration of project: 16 weeks Date of completion: January 2012 (MSc.Arch) The studio project deals with a quintessential relic of post-war housing in the Netherlands: the Bijlmerflat Kleiburg. Students were called to develop new strategies that reach farther then renovation of what is already there, or consolidation from a purely cultural vantage point. By making use of the existing building, new possibilities for this mastodon will be extensively explored. Refurbishing the existing apartment block by means of keeping the structural walls was essential. Dwellings are evenly partitioned off every 5m. New typologies for starters, students, young families as well as studios were implemented. The restoration of facade materials was also taken into consideration, transforming the grey and brutalist character into a more appealing, updated and brighter tone. The existing Kleijburg block is closed off and unapproachable. The main issue is that the existing building of 500 dwellings has a lifeless plinth. By raising the block and making the ground floor more permeable, more activity is generated and the housing complex becomes automatically safer. 28

Nodular Growth Type of project: housing, individual. Location: China Town, Ottawa Supervisor: Jay Lim Duration of project: 14 weeks Date of completion: December 2010 (B.Arch) Medium density Housing Project located on a constrained corner site in Ottawa’s Somerset Heights (770 Somerset Street West). Includes 40 units, parking, commercial space. Nodular Gowth is a new type of urban growth; a micro city within a neighbourhood. Units among the complex reflect the proportions of the surrounding vernacular housing type: one to two storey, clad in brick. Units are stacked vertically and horizontally to achieve the density of an apartment building. The gaps between the units allow for extensions or ‘rooms to grow’. These additional spaces incorporate a multitude of usages, such as: a den, guest room, library, winter garden. 40% of the units are equipped with these extensions. Having interconnected streets and nodes transforms an ordinary apartment building into a stacked micro neighbourhood within the macro city scale. A market hall at grade will serve as a shop for local goods and will additionally cater to various events, exhibitions.

Union Station Enhancement Type of project: Public (3P) Location: Toronto, Ontario Project Architect: RDHA Role: Advocate Architect (RCD) Date of completion: witheld Union Station Trainshed Redevelopment is a major infrastructure project. A critical piece of the Metrolinx Regional Express Rail program that will provide all-day, two-way, service on all GO Transit corridors. The project includes preparation of infrastructure to accommodate increased capacity and the future electrification of the trains. The design concept for the project attempts to bring unity and clarity to these parts, and to create public visibility and a heightened expression of this dynamic piece of transit infrastructure. My role within this project was to generate design options for both the Platform level and the Concourse level; as well as various details throughout. I have taken part in coordination with consultants, as well as the production of computer renderings, and the meticulous production of Reference Concept Design drawings.

The apartments focus on natural daylight, and smart uses of space, providing the dweller with cozy nooks, functional arrangements, and a flexible lifestyle. 50% of the units are equipped with expansive private roof top decks, which are perfect for entertaining, or just escaping from the everyday hustle and bustle. The 2 and 3 storey dwellings come with a feature stair which acts as a light well to bring in daylight from the top down to the lower levels. There are various layouts designed to suit all strata of society. Whether it’s a bachelorstyle of living, a full family home, students, or retirees, Lakeshoe Towns encompasses everybody’s needs and makes everyone feel unique in their dwelling. The interior palette includes light oak engineered hardwood floors, bright and spa-like surfaces in the bathrooms, quartz kitchen countertops, stainless steel appliances, and ample windows and storage space in every room.

Muskoka Bay Resort Type of project: new built, residential condos Location: Muskoka, Ontario Project Architect: Trevor McIvor (Trevor McIvor Architect Inc) Developers: Freed Developments Role: Project Management, SD, DD Date of completion: expected 2019 The Muskoka Bay Resort was designed to blend into its’ surroundings of the Canadian shield. The 62-unit condo has two sides to it: the forested entrance side, and the golf course side. Both are quite different, relating to their specific programmes. The entry facade of mixed glazing types has an ephemeral quality that makes the building disappear into the surrounding forest. The golf side is compartmentalized into smaller units with outdoor space, framing some of these individual units with wooden boxes acting as frames to the views. The lobby of the Muskoka Bay Resort provides a link between the two contrasting sides of the building. The fully-glazed lobby is a portal joining the driveway side with the golf side, it is also the place where the building jogs in order to reduce the scale and create a more interesting flow of hallways above. Muskoka Bay Resort has eight typical unit types and two penthouse unit types. Muskoka Bay Resort will be built out of site-cast concrete and have an integrated panel system of varying types of glass finishes.

Deep Bay Cottage Type of project: new built, sinlg family residential Location: Parry Sound, Ontario Project Architect: Trevor McIvor (Trevor McIvor Architect) Role: Project Mangement, SD, DD, CD Date of completion: 2019 expected Located near Ontario’s Killbear Provincial Park, this cottage features incredible views onto a lake, as well as crown land which has copious forests lacking any types of buildings. It was a perfect opportunity to build on top of the highest point of the property, overlooking the water, and the edges of the cliff. The granite on site gave way to a perfect and stable foundation, on bedrock. The cottage is mainly steel frame construction with timber infill roof system at three different heights. The largest challenge was the lack of wall space, due to a high amount of glazing. Multiple moment frames, as well as heavy roof beams had to be used in order to achieve this look. Deep Bay Cottage ‘grows’ out of the surrounding stone and is nestled in between the old pines, and cedar trees.

Annex House Type of project: renovation & addition residential Location: Toronto, Ontario Project Architect: Trevor McIvor (Trevor McIvor Architect Inc) Role: Project Mangement, SD-DD-CD-CA, Interior Design Date of completion: 2016 Located in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood, the dwelling for a family of 4 features an extensive renovation of an existing Victorian home. Maintaining the historic shell as much as possible, the interior was entirely gutted, altering the floor plans, the circulation and the programme. Integrating a fresh and contemporary style of living into the design was key. A smart placement of stairs and hallways allows for an open plan. Annex House is all about bringing in natural daylight, avoiding clutter, keeping organized, and allowing for a balanced lifestyle. The main feature of the house is the double-height opening over the dining room with suspended glowing lights, as well as the original parallam opentread stair. This void brings in natural daylight to the main living area on the main floor as well as helps open up the second floor volume. Many elements, whether its millwork or windows in the house frame the views. Linear lighting plays a key role in adding character to the house. It helps to accent important moments, as well as provides subtle, indirect lighting, creating an overall glow to the house. The interiors of Annex House encompass a modern yet timeless palette of: white oak, white painted walls, custom oak 60
millwork, with mid century modern accent pieces.

Georgian Bay Residence Type of project: new built, single family residential Location: Parry Sound, Ontario Project Architect: Trevor McIvor (Trevor McIvor Architect Inc) Role: Project Mangement, SD, DD, CD Date of completion: 2018 Situated on a vast, and open landscape directly facing the open waters of Georgian Bay, this 5,000 sf house was designed with keeping family and function in mind. Georgian Bay Residence generally encompasses an open plan with a private and a public axis. The ground floor plan acts as a bungalow layout, with all rooms flowing into the central gathering space. The house was mainly steel-frame construction on ICF walls with infill framing TJI joists and LVL’s. The biggest challenge was detailing the glass cantilevered boxed which hung off the steel beams. Another challenge was the vast roof which was originall designed as a flat roof. The client asked for a pitch, and the challenge was to seemingly maintain a contamporary flat roof while still using a truss system. Georgian Bay Residence fits comfortably in the site, which is mainly composed of the Canadian Shield’s granite, also used as the cladding materials for some of the stonework on the walls as well as the patio terrace and entry way steps.

Deep Bay Bunkie Type of project: new build, small scale residential Location: Parry Sound, Ontario Supervisor: Trevor McIvor (Trevor McIvor Architect Inc) Role: Design, Project Mangement, SD, DD, CD Date of completion: 2018 Deep Bay Bunkie is located right next to Deep Bay Cottage. The clients approached us to design a small but functional sleeping cabin for their guests near the waterfront area. The bunkie was to have two bedrooms and sleep 3-8 people. Two large sliding patio doors are to serve the bunkie with proper light and natural air flow and have the bunkie act an in/out ‘screened porch’. The bunkie is a simple form, with a vernacular pitched roof clad in contrasting materials: charcoal siding against white-washed birch ply. The same Scandinavian-style birch panelling is used to clad the interior of the bunkie in a staggered pattern. Black accents throughout appear within the plumbing fixtures as well as lighting. A glazed triangular window wall brings attention to the roof line as well as provides additional daylighting into the living space from above.

Palmerston Addition & Renovation Type of project: renovation & addition residential Location: Toronto, Ontario Project Architect: Cathy Garrido (Altius Architecture Inc) Role: Project Mangement, SD-DD-CD-CA, Interiors Date of completion: 2015 Palmerston Blvd is a well-known romantic residential street situated in Toronto’s downtown. A young couple with two children wanted to redesign their semi while keeping the historic exterior shell. The dwelling contains 3 bathrooms and 3 bedrooms. The dwelling encompasses an open-plan layout with integrated natural daylight, as well as timeless yet clean interiors. The functions within the dwelling were thoughtfully relocated, creating better circulation, and a more useable space in general. The stair is the only element that stayed in its original location. The basement floor was expanded into living headquarters as well, not just for storage as it was prior to the redesign. The interior houses custom millwork in white oak, with white and grey accents, maintaining a very ‘clean’ Scandinavian-like aesthetic. The main feature of the house is the 3-panel lift and slide over-looking the rear garden from the main living space, which you see upon entrance. The addition on the ground floor squared off the original floor plan to create a more flexible space. A third floor dormer was also extended in order to make a large master suite. The master bedroom features a fireplace, 10’ ceilings, and a skylight. There is plenty 74
storage space concealed along the walls.
