Debra is excited to return to Panto at Lighthouse this year and admits that she is a proper local now that she lives in the area: “Poole feels like my backyard.” Taking the title role of Jack, she’ll be climbing the beanstalk to defeat the giant and retrieve the golden treasure. The magical adventure promises traditional family fun: “Jack and the Beanstalk is a fantastic Panto. I don’t like it when fairytale stories are dramatized and brought out in Hollywood as something very scary and not suitable for children.” She can’t wait for her children to see her performance: “My kids aren’t fierce critics – they love Panto!”

Debra is joined by Patrick, who takes on the role of villainous Fleshcreep. This is his first Panto appearance: “It’s always been my ambition to do a Panto, although it’s taken a while to fulfill this ambition. I’m delighted to be involved!” It might seem like a far cry from his role in Game of Thrones, but Patrick feels it’s a natural progression: “It’s simply an extension of what I’ve been doing – if you look at the form of a Shakespeare play, it’s pretty similar. There are a lot of asides in Shakespeare, similar to Panto and there’s a comparable level of direct engagement with the audience.” He’s looking forward to being booed and hissed at: “The bad guys are so much more fun to play! I like to see them as misunderstood rather than as inherently bad.”

SCOTT MASLEN SCOTT PLAYS THE EVIL ABANAZAR IN ALADDIN, THIS YEAR’S MAGICAL PANTO AT BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION THEATRE. HE’S BEST KNOWN AS JACK BRANNING, THE SMOOTH OPERATOR FROM EASTENDERS AND IS LOOKING FORWARD TO HIS FIRST STINT IN PANTO. So this is your first Panto – what prompted the decision to have a go? I’ve been asked to do Panto the last couple of years and it’s never really worked before, with regards to timing. A couple of the Eastenders boys that I worked with, like Steve and Shane, kept going on at me saying ‘You’ll love it, you’ll love it!’ Panto is one of those bucket list things – you’ve got to do it. Will you be staying in a hotel somewhere in Bournemouth? I’ve still got to find my digs actually - I’m looking at the moment. I have a dog so I was thinking that I might get an RV and just stick it in their car park! What does your son think about you being in Panto? Is he excited? My son’s telling everyone that I’m doing it for the money… He’s a bit of a chip off the old block; he’s 12 and he’s full of it. Tell us about your character, Abanazar. He’s the naughty one, the mischievous one. If you’re in Panto, that’s the one you want to be.
So you’re the one everyone will boo then? I assume so! He doesn’t like Aladdin… I read that you’re ready to move to LA and work in superhero and action films, is that true? Things aren’t written in stone when you’re an actor; that’s why I never say anything to anyone about what I’m doing. For me now, it’s important to step away from what I’ve been doing and not do anything like I’ve been doing. So, I’m turning quite a lot of stuff down at the minute. You’ve won the Sexiest Male Soap Award for numerous years… are you planning on giving Brad Pitt a run for his money? It’s so embarrassing! But frightening them to just the right point – you want them to enjoy the baddie’s come-uppance at the end. While they’re in the theatre they should be a bit scared; but when they leave they should be smiling.

What are your lasting memories of being in Dr. Who? Having the best time ever and having the opportunity to play an iconic character. I love the modern Dr Who too – what they can do now with special effects is phenomenal.
What brings you back to Panto every year? I get to share in a little bit of that essential Christmas ingredient – Pantomime! Over the years you’ve played the villain, the dame, the comic and the principal boy… which part do you enjoy playing the most and why? I have no favourites, quite honestly. I have always loved playing the dame but Abanazar is a good villain to play because he is more involved in the action and has to charm and cajole Widow Twankey and Aladdin – or at least try to.

What is it about this music that inspires you? That period of time is very important to us; it’s the music that inspired us to make music in the first place. That whole wave of music and even the fashion was a movement – our album is a nod to those memories.
There’s Ed Thomas, Louis M^ttrs, Pusha T, Elli Ingram, Moko and Bo Saris. We’ve also got the legend that is Nile Rodgers on ‘What is Right.’ I don’t need to say much about Nile! He reached out to us, which was a real turn for the books. He’s an incredible guy – he played the guitar non-stop for two days. I was like ‘Nile, stop playing!’
‘Count on Me’ is your current single - why do you think this song has become such a firm favourite? It’s very nostalgic. Back in the day, you’d have heard this sort of song at 2am at Rave Nation! I think it’s doing so well because it’s uplifting, it’s got a good sentiment, as opposed to ‘forget it man, I’m never gonna be there for you.’ I mean that wouldn’t be very nice, would it?
You’re due to embark on your biggest arena tour to date. On a scale of one to ten, how excited are you about coming to Bournemouth? We’ve been coming to the south coast for a long time, and I used to DJ in really small clubs in Bournemouth. I did one of my first terrible gigs to like seven people in Bournemouth! We come from playing in small clubs back in the day, to doing an arena tour to thousands of people… it’s beyond our wildest dreams.
You’ve collaborated with numerous artists over the years, Delilah, Maverick Sabre and Tinie Tempah to name just a few. Who do you have collaborating on your new album?

THE BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED GABRIELLE CHATS TO ALICE ROOK ABOUT HER BIGGEST UK TOUR TO DATE, HER DEBUT ALBUM AND HER PET FERRET. Let’s start by talking about your cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s ‘The Power of Love,’ used for the John Lewis advert. How did it come about? It just kind of happened! I got asked very late on about two days before the deadline if I wanted to have a go at covering it. I was always a big fan of the adverts so obviously I went for it. It enabled me to go out to an audience I would never have been able to reach otherwise. John Lewis adverts are more of a ‘thing’ now as well as being adverts – I think people look forward to them year after year. You’ve worked really hard to get where you are today, so what do you think of shows like The X Factor and The Voice that can catapult artists into the limelight so quickly? I think those shows are great for a certain type of artist. Maybe if someone’s a bit older or they’ve had a record deal before - it can offer them another chance. For me it probably wouldn’t have been a great path, but I can certainly see how it can be great for other artists. What prompted the decision to call the album ‘English Rain’? We were recording the songs and they all had this English wartime feel, so it just sort of fitted. Also, when we were taking the photos for the album, we ended up using the umbrella picture – so that pretty much confirmed it! If you could collaborate with anybody, dead or alive, who would you choose? Probably Joni Mitchell, she’s definitely one of my all-time favourite artists. Is it true that you taught yourself to play guitar and piano? Do you have any pearls of wisdom for self-taught artists? You’ve really got to go for it with the guitar – you have to pick it up regularly and keep doing it. If you just pick it up and strum a few chords a week, you can’t expect wonders!
You’re about to embark on your biggest UK tour to date. What’s your favourite thing about being on tour? I might never have had a reason to go to all these places if it wasn’t for touring! It’s amazing that I get to travel so much and meet so many nice people. My band is really cool and they’re all like my best mates, so it’s like going on a little holiday. Have you been to Bournemouth before? I haven’t ever been to Bournemouth before; I’m so excited! I’ll have to make sure I leave time to walk along the beach. When you get some free time, what do you like to do? I love to paint; I’m always doing arty things. I’m away from my own kitchen a lot so when I get some free time, I love being in my own kitchen and cooking. You toured with Ed Sheeran earlier this year – what was that experience like? We weren’t best friends at the time, but we’d met each other a few times and both appreciated each other’s music. It just sort of happened! It was very random and spontaneous – but Ed is so chilled out! His team were fantastic and really looked after me, and of course it was amazing to visit Australia. Is it true that you have a pet ferret? Yes, his name is Ferris. He’s very cute! I take him for walks sometimes. You’re pretty active on Facebook and Twitter – how important do you think those mediums are for interacting with fans? I think it’s really important, especially now. It’s great for fans to know that they can send a message to the person they love listening to and look up to. It’s only fair to engage in that. If people buy my music, then I want to be able to say thank you to them directly.

FRANCIS ROSSI, THE CO-FOUNDER AND FRONT MAN OF ICONIC GROUP STATUS QUO CHATS TO ALICE ROOK VERY HONESTLY ABOUT LIFE IN THE BAND, HIS ROLE IN THE FILM BULA QUO, THE FORTHCOMING UK TOUR AND HIS FEAR OF REACHING THE DANGLING CARROT… For anyone who hasn’t seen Bula Quo yet, how would you best describe it? A sack of… No seriously, it’s one of those typical British spoofy comedies. Some people will like it and some people won’t; I should be telling you it’s a must see… but I can’t do that. How long were you shooting on location in Fiji for? Not long – it was a low budget thing, so it had to be done in a month. We worked every single day for a month and had a week of night shoots too! We’d be up at 5am – it was very full on! The idea is if it breaks even or makes money then they want us to do another one. If it falls flat on its face, then we get up and go onto the next project. I think that with us older bands, we get up and carry on, as opposed to the younger bands that in the end get punched numb. Did you feel out of your comfort zone whilst shooting Bula Quo? Very much so! Christmas is the only time when I enjoy doing nothing, and then the call for Bula Quo came in January and it was a real rush to the stomach, and then we went for it. What’s the reaction been like so far? Some of the fans thought the single we put out for it was just sacrilege and
some said ‘oh, what are they doing, haven’t they got enough money?’ as though we’re going to make millions and millions! They don’t even consider for a moment that we might lose! Something comes along and you go for it, and once you’re committed, there’s no turning back. It’s like yourself really, you didn’t think you’d be talking to that geezer from Status Quo but it’s a job – and you just get on and do it. Some of the hardcore fans were very upset we’d done it. Sometimes your fans can hold you down; they seem to have their own ideas about what one’s image should be. All these things about image can be crippling! In the end though, you are trying to protect this thing because it’s given my 8 children an education and it’s given me a great life, and all the mistakes we’ve made, all the cocaine addiction, the drinking… boats, planes, trains, all that stuff, it’s given us all that. Particularly now I have this fear of failure even greater than I had when I was younger, which is kind of weird. I feel that if I stop, then I’ve failed. But I suppose everyone has to stop at some time? Most people have the fear of failure as they start out, don’t they? As opposed to later on… Yes, well I think it was there initially too. It’s like what you were taught at school, that you’ve got a stick on your head, and then about a foot

away, there’s a carrot that dangles there. And you’re trying to reach that frigging carrot… And all my life I’ve been trying to reach it, but what happens if I reach the carrot?
Bono can’t, George Michael can, Madonna can’t, Kylie can’t, Rod can… most of us can’t really sing; there are no trained voices out there. I don’t think any of us actually know what the ‘X’ factor actually is – we think we’ve seen it, but that’s actually why it’s called ‘X’ because nobody knows. Some people say that they want to do it for their family and for their mum, but no they don’t! We want to do everything for ourselves; we are all insecure little show offs. We do it because we want to show off, otherwise we couldn’t get up there in the first place.
And do you think you’ve ever reached the carrot? No! I still think it’s dangling there. I’m frightened of reaching it, because then what would I do? I’m always still trying to go somewhere because of the very nature of the business. You never reach the conclusion. So I think that whilst we need to have expectations for some things in life, we need to be careful because most things don’t live up to the expectations we set for ourselves. It’s the looking forward that leads to the downhill; it’s a pattern that goes on. There’s this fear inside me… and that’s what keeps me going.
When you’re not writing, recording or performing, what do you like to do with your time off? The only time that happens is the end of December and I vegetate for a couple of days. I’ll do puzzles and crosswords and enjoy sitting in front of a log fire. I do have a difficulty in putting down the band or the whole thing altogether, and my wife often complains about it.
If you knew then what you know now, is there anything that you would do differently? I’d probably learn to play a bit better! I was a cocky sod; I didn’t start really practicing properly until I was about 40. When I was young, I just thought that you become successful and then everybody likes you – but most of the time, people aren’t going to love you. You know if you look back in rock ‘n’ roll and pop history, the biggest people can’t sing – I can’t, Jagger can’t,

Congratulations are due ahead of your first UK headline tour! What are you most looking forward to? I’m buzzing to come to Bournemouth! A lot of my friends go to Bournemouth Uni and it’s one of my favourite places for a night out. I’ve been to Halo and also The Old Fire Station - both were very messy! I love Bournemouth, I wish I lived there!
What would be your advice to the contestants on The X Factor this year? Work hard, keep focused and be nice to everyone that you meet! And always remember where you’ve come from. Sam Callahan is my favourite; he’s a good lad and we know him quite well. How do you feel about missing out on Sharon being on the judging panel the year you were in it? We’re obviously gutted but we still got to meet her last year at Judges’ Houses. What was it like the first time you heard ‘Carry You’ on the radio? It was mental! I remember where I was when it came on the radio – I was driving along to football, and as I pulled up, it came on. I got so emotional!
Your book ‘Union J: Our Story’ has now been released… what can fans expect from your book? The book goes deeper into our backgrounds; I’m really excited for the fans to get to know us better. My mum got the book this morning and she texted saying ‘I’ve just read your whole section in Tescos and I was in tears, thank you for the lovely words.’ Are you sick of hearing One Direction comparisons or do you take these as a compliment? We look up to those boys; they’re hugely successful and have done so well for themselves and they’re lovely guys as well.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Lemur Landings, the indoor soft play centre in Poole is supporting the world’s largest children’s Christmas project, Operation Christmas Child. If you’ve bought back-to-school shoes for your children recently, hopefully you’ve still got the empty shoeboxes and you can fill them with simple gifts to give to children in need throughout Africa, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.

Visitors to Lemur Landings between 01-17 November can place their shoeboxes under the special Christmas tree. Father Christmas will collect the shoeboxes on Sunday 17 November.

WINCHESTER SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 2013

Calling all short filmmakers! The exciting annual Winchester Short Film Festival returns to showcase the talents of Hampshire’s best short filmmakers. The ethos behind the festival’s second year is ‘anything goes’ – comedy, romance, horror, drama, music video or animation – it’s completely up to you, so long as the film runs for less than 5 minutes. The festival takes place at the buzzing Art Café in Winchester with prizes awarded for various categories, including ‘Best Short Film,’ ‘Short Film with Greatest Emotional Impact,’ ‘Best Young Filmmaker under 22,’ ‘Best Young Filmmaker under 18’ and ‘Winchester Today Best Original Screenplay.’ The deadline for submissions is Friday 01 November but don’t panic if you miss it, you can still support Winchester’s talent. Celebrating film across the city, Southampton Film Week invites you to enjoy numerous screenings and take place in various workshops and masterclasses. Films, old and new will be screened throughout the week, including the 1925 classic silent Phantom of the Opera, Before Midnight and Samsara. Phantom of the Opera is screened at the O2 Guildhall, Southampton on Tuesday 05 November. The Youth Film Festival Challenge takes place on Saturday 09 November for teams of young filmmakers (aged 14-19 years). Think you’ve got what it takes to make a film in 8 hours? You’ll be given a word as a theme for your film and it’s up to you how you interpret it. THOR: THE DARK WORLD (12A) The Thunder God’s (Chris Hemsworth) first outing post-Avengers sees him returning to Earth to bring Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) back to Asgard with him. However, there is something far darker going on that the people of Earth are about to witness – something that even Odin (Anthony Hopkins) cannot withstand – Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), leader of the Dark Elves. To face this ancient evil race, Thor must unite with his treacherous half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to tackle the threat together – but can he be trusted? Dir. Alan Taylor

GRAVITY (12A) Probably one of the most interestingly shot films of the year (and already having the success in the US to prove it), Gravity tells the story of a medical engineer and an astronaut who work together to survive after an accident on a space station leaves them adrift in space. The interesting thing about this film is that parts of it are done as if it is one continuous shot, giving you the feeling of being a part of the action. Dir. Alfonso Cuaron

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE (12A) Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) return to the Capitol as the victors of the 74th Annual Hunger Games, but winning means leaving their family and friends and going on a Victors Tour of the districts of Panem. After the first film, I’m a little hooked into this series as it’s a lot more serious than other “teen novel adaptations” and has a dark air of dystopian politics about it. A catch up of the first film is recommended before seeing this one! Dir. Francis Lawrence

CARRIE (15) Based on the original Stephen King novel, Carrie didn’t exactly need a remake after the 1976 version, but at least this one looks like it might have some more gravitas to it with Chloe Moretz as the teenage girl who goes on a telekinetic rampage after being pushed too far at her high school prom. It’s a shame this didn’t get released closer to Halloween, but from the look of it, it could go far enough on star power alone – also starring Julianne Moore. Dir. Kimberly Peirce

POOLE RUNNERS WINTER SERIES The Poole Runners Winter Series 2013-14 enters its second heat on Friday 15 November with a 5k race, starting and finishing near Boscombe Pier. It’s a measured 5k course, leading you back to the pier. Runners should meet for 7.30pm at Coasters, located just 100m from the pier. Facilities available at Coasters include storage space for bags, hot/cold drinks and the usual menu. Race administration is also found here. The prize presentation will take place immediately after the last race. The Winter Series consists of 6 heats throughout October to March. People of all ages and abilities are welcome – there’s a small £2 fee to participate in the race. There are many age categories for both male and female entrants.
