DORSET COUNTY MUSEUM DORCHESTER

CERNE ABBAS GIANT CERNE ABBAS, DORCHESTER

The Cerne Abbas Giant in Dorchester is Britain’s largest chalk hill figure and is believed to date back to the Iron Age.

Established in 1845, this independent museum is owned and managed by the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society.

Made by a turf-cut outline filled with chalk, many theories surround the giant’s identity. It is a large naked man wielding a club, standing 180ft tall.

The collections are outstanding, with treasures to tempt all ages and interests. In the Jurassic Coast Gallery meet Dorset’s real dinosaurs. Dino Club on Tuesday 30 July is great fun for kids aged 7 and under (10.30-11.30am). Free event.

Is it an ancient symbol of spirituality? Is it the GrecoRoman hero Hercules? Or is it a mockery of Oliver Cromwell? Or intended as an aid to fertility?

ANe SC for mor MUSIC INTERVIEW

5IVE

BOY BAND MEMBER SEAN CONLON CHATS TO ALICE ROOK ABOUT 5IVE’S FORTHCOMING GREATEST HITS HEADLINE TOUR What has the reaction been like so far since you announced the Greatest Hits Headline UK Tour? It’s been fantastic; it’s been pleasing for the fans and for us! The Big Reunion Tour was brilliant but unfortunately it was only a snapshot of us. People weren’t getting to hear our back catalogue of songs, so we thought we’d put our own Tour on. Luckily, it seems to be going down well!

You guys are known as ‘the bad lads of pop.’ What’s the most outrageous thing any of you have ever done? There isn’t one that really sticks out! People say that about us, but I think we’re just normal lads, we haven’t got a camera façade. It’s that rawness of being ourselves that makes us stand out. With regards to The Big Reunion series, what was it like being so honest about the past? My mission whilst doing The Big Reunion series was to be myself, warts and all. I wanted to get through the whole series and really just put Sean across and show the emotions I was going through, whether they were good, bad or angry.

What do you enjoy most about being on tour? When I’m on stage with the guys, everything sort of falls into place. My family often says that we look the happiest on stage. It’s great to get to do what you love; it’s a blessing. As a band, you’ve won numerous awards and gained an army of loyal fans. What’s the proudest moment in your career to date? I think there are 2 or 3. When ‘Keep On Moving’ went to number one that was a really big moment for us. Another great moment was actually signing the record deal. Later on, you’re lying in your bed at night, thinking ‘I’ve got a record deal.’ When you’re 16, that’s mad.

Are you looking to recruit a new member? It will just be the four of us; we are 5ive. We discovered that the band really works as a four piece - the fans feel it, we feel it and the press have fortunately been brilliant with us. It just feels like chapter two. You can catch 5ive on their Greatest Hits Headline UK Tour at BIC, Bournemouth on Saturday 23 November. To book tickets, visit www.bic.co.uk or call 0844 576 3000

FAMILY INTERVIEW WWW.DOMOREMAG.COM/FAMILY

facebook.com/DoMoreMagazine @DoMoreMagazine www.domoremag.com

You guys are definitely the biggest mischief-makers at Camp Bestival this year! What can we expect when you return to the Castle? It’s basically the Dicks versus the Doms – we split the audience right down the middle. Dom takes his side, which is the Doms, and I take my side, which is the Dicks! The sides compete against each other during the show.

Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow was such a massive success with a huge following. What are your favourite memories from the show? ‘Creamy Muck Muck’ was definitely my best bit (the custard fight at the end of the show). Every Saturday morning you’d have custard thrown at you and then it would solidify in your ear… a few months later, you’d find a piece of Creamy Muck Muck in your ear!

Will you be indulging in some pie-throwing activity this year? Indeed, there will be some of that. Looking forward to it!

Would you ever like it to come back for a new series or do you think it’s best to leave it in the past? A lot of people think it was because the BBC had decided it wasn’t quite right for them anymore but it was actually our decision. We were offered another series but we wanted to leave it on a high.

Are you going to be partaking in the fancy dress theme, ‘Around The World’? We haven’t dressed up yet, but maybe we will this time. I’d go as the Eiffel Tower, why not?

How many times a day does somebody shout BOGIES at you? Every single day! I’ve never had a day without it. I think it’s going to be on my gravestone. I’ll be in the supermarket pushing my trolley around and I’ll hear it down the aisle. It’s that crazy! Somebody wrote us a letter once saying that the worst place they’d ever heard it shouted (or whispered) was at a funeral! Which can’t have been very nice!

What do you love most about Camp Bestival? Most festivals are just lots of people getting very drunk, but Camp Bestival is all about families. Even when the headliners are on, you can still see all of the kids, still awake and still having a great time. It’s nice for adults to be able to go to something like that and be able to stay out and feel safe with their kids. There’s just such a good vibe.

You both have achieved so much – successful TV presenter, radio presenter, BAFTA Award winners… What’s next for you? We’re doing a couple of other festivals this year and taking the stage tour around the country. We’re just about to host a new show, ‘Blue Peter - You Decide!’ which is the search for the next Blue Peter presenter. There are 10 hopefuls out of about 20,000 applications and we put them through a series of challenges and tasks.

You’re due to be hosting the Castle Stage on Sunday night with a DJ set. Have you done that before? No, we haven’t done it before – it will be our first time. Last year we took over the backstage area with our iPod late on Sunday night and we got a little bit told off for doing that! But then I think they thought we were pretty good at spinning some tunes and this time, we’re going to be having it large! How did you meet Dom and how did you become a duo? We met in prison… joking! We met at the BBC - I was a runner and Dom was just starting out as a magician. We were 18 or 19 years old, had both bypassed Uni and we just clicked.

ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL REVIEW 13 - 16 JUNE Early Friday morning I put on my Hunter wellies, applied a dash of waterproof mascara and headed off excitedly to catch the ferry. I was slightly concerned about the weather after last year’s water-logged site and stranded festival-goers… but thankfully I needn’t have worried. The line-up truly had something for everyone. Jake Bugg caught everyone’s attention as he graced the Main Stage on Friday afternoon; a true talent at just 18. In the evening I saw Emeli Sandé who blew me away with her vocal talents. On several occasions she moved me to tears, especially when she sang her poignant song ‘Clown.’ I then followed the teen crowd to the Big Top to see electro-pop sensation Ellie Goulding. Personally, I think she would have done better on the main stage, but unfortunately she clashed with Paul Weller and so the schedule was understandable. She soared her way through her chart hits such as ‘Starry Eyed,’ ‘Lights’ and ‘Anything Could Happen.’

Main pic (below) and Stone Roses (above) by Sara Lincoln Photography

The wind picked up early Saturday morning (but luckily my tent stayed in one place) and I set off with flowers in my hair to enjoy everything the Saturday line-up had to offer. It was a pleasure to watch X Factor winners, Little Mix perform at their first ever festival; the crowd lapped up their power-pop set. In the afternoon the sun shone whilst the delicious sound of Ben Howard floated out over the fields before Bastille took to the stage. He informed the crowd that it was only 2 years ago that they were here playing the Strongbow tent and so this experience meant so much to them. Then came the headlining act everyone had been eagerly waiting for… The Killers. With such a vast array of hits, the question on everyone’s mind was ‘What will they open their set with?’ The answer was ‘Mr. Brightside’, their biggest-selling single. A lengthy, energetic and exciting set followed. Everywhere I looked people were either singing their hearts out or dancing like they never wanted it to end. Sadly however, the festival did come to an end, as all good things must. Unfortunately I missed Bon Jovi as the ferry called my name… but I have heard that the near three-hour set was exceptional. www.isleofwightfestival.com By Alice Rook

REVOLUTION BOURNEMOUTH

The Do More team were more than happy to be invited to sample the delights of Revolution in Bournemouth. After taking our seats in a cosy little nook, we ordered, and were soon tucking into Halloumi & Red Pepper Flat-bread and the Revolucion de Cuba Burrito. You certainly get a lot for your money – we couldn’t believe the size of the portions! The halloumi was warm and gooey, sat on top of a piled-high bed of colourful salad and glazed in sweet chilli sauce. The Burrito was wrapped in a flour tortilla with house rice, refried beans, onions, peppers, guacamole, sliced garlic mushrooms, sour cream and cheese; served with tortilla chips and spicy rum sauce. Definitely a dish for those who like to tingle their tastebuds! We were treated to the newest cocktail on their menu, G & Tea, which mixes Tanqueray gin with elderflower, tea and tonic and is served in a jam jar! 01202 232132 | Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, BH1 1JU www.revolution-bars.co.uk/bournemouth By Alice Rook

LIME WOOD HOTEL LYNDHURST

To start with I had a spring entrée served on typical English China. The tenderness of the asparagus stalks combined with the firm texture of the shrimps contrasted beautifully with the sweetness of the pickled raisins. For the main course, I went for Onion Risotto with a flaked cod island. Chris ordered the tender ‘pink’ Lamb Chops served with pink fir sautéed potatoes. Mouth watering yet? Read more online.
