GO APE
WE
@ MOORS VALLEY
In celebration of Go Ape’s 10th anniversary at its flagship course in Moors Valley Country Park, I was thrilled to be invited to swing through the trees like a monkey. I even got to zoom around on a Forest Segway! If you haven’t gone bananas at Go Ape before, then you are truly missing out! With 28 sites nationwide, it is the UK’s leading forest adventure company providing a truly thrilling and liberating experience. After full safety training, I was let loose into the forest canopy. The course took roughly two hours (but this varies depending on your confidence!) There are a variety of obstacles and crossings. I crawled through suspended barrels, climbed rope ladders and crossed rickety wooden stepping-stones. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find it challenging and at times rather daunting, especially the Tarzan Swings where you had to launch yourself off a platform and grab hold of the rope net in front of you. The zip wires were my favourite part of the Go Ape experience; I felt like I was flying above the beautiful forest. Once back on stable ground, I was invited to a celebratory BBQ with team members, Chief Gorillas, representatives from Help For Heroes and Tristram and Rebecca Mayhew who founded the company. In addition to Go Ape’s 10th birthday, Moors Valley is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary – double celebrations were in order! To mark a decade of adventure I was given the opportunity to tackle the trails of the forest on a Segway. Once I’d mastered the challenge of balancing, it was amazing to explore the forest floor and feel the wind in my face! I’d recommend Go Ape Moors Valley to anyone looking for a day out with a difference! Perfect for young and old family members, adults on hen or stag events, team-building activities or simply anyone wanting a bit of adventure… I left Moors Valley with a monkey-sized grin on my face! facebook.com/DoMoreMagazine @DoMoreMagazine www.domoremag.com So how did you get involved with M People? Originally there were other singers on board and they asked me to come along, having said they’d written 2 songs specifically for me. How to appeal to a singer’s ego! I had a ball; I laughed the whole day. I remember thinking to myself ‘This is what it’s supposed to be like.’ And I think that’s what people saw in M People – that we were joyful, grateful. You know, we’d been in bands that hadn’t done anything before so we knew what rejection felt like. We knew what it was like to have your dreams crushed… so to be able to have that chance, however long it lasted, we were determined to enjoy it.
M People is the ultimate feel-good band. What do you think are the ingredients required to produce a hit record? I think that what makes any good record is the content of a song and how it connects with the listener. The lyrics and the production of the song are important. It’s very difficult though – you can never sit down to write and say ‘Oh, this is going to be a hit.’ Absolutely not! It’s been 8 years since M People last toured together. What are you most looking forward to about being back on the road? The energy that live music creates on and off the stage in the audience. It’s magical, there’ absolutely nothing like it; not studio performances, not anything!
Your solo song ‘Proud’ was very poignantly used as a tribute to the athletes in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it’s a firm favourite of Oprah Winfrey’s and is frequently referenced in the UK sitcom Miranda… what do you think it is about Proud that hits home with so many people? It’s powerful to me because I wanted to celebrate self and human endeavor in a very simple way. It’s not always the things that people know you for that make your life the most successful or the happiest. People on the outside looking in would say ‘Why would you do a solo thing when it’s very comfortable to be in M People?’ But you know, I don’t want to live life comfortably. I don’t want to rest on my laurels. I don’t want to think I’ve achieved everything I’m supposed to. You have to set yourself goals and sometimes those goals mystify others. It’s about waking up each day and feeling that there’s something worthwhile to do with yourself, with your time or with other people. I think that the song is inclusive - life is better when you’ve got others to share experiences with. It sounds like a cliché, but it’s very true. I can hear you, you’re a young girl. I think to myself good on you, I’m happy to hear you doing this interview; that makes me feel good. I think to myself ‘She’s doing her thing’ - it’s all about being collectively proud; it’s a good thing.
What can people expect from your Greatest Hits Tour? Will there be any surprises? I think I’ve matured as a singer and we’ve matured as people, but that zest for life and our enjoyment of playing live will surprise people. It will be just as fresh as it always was because we don’t do it often and so the love and the joy is still there. M People have played Glastonbury before - what was that experience like? I can only speak for myself but back then, I was thinking ‘Is the audience going to relate? Is it going to translate?’ Especially back then, you know when Glastonbury was known as a rock indie festival… but we were received so well! We won the audience over. It was a warm and special experience; I’ll never forget it. I even remember the dress I had on as the sun was setting and it was blowing in the wind… and I have a terrible memory! What was life like for you before M People? Did you always know you were going to end up in the music industry? I was in a band before M People called Hot House and even though we were critically acclaimed, we didn’t sell many records - the second album didn’t get released. So I didn’t know if I was going to make a living from music but I knew I wanted to. If I had to have an ordinary job and sing on the side then I knew I was willing to do that.
You can catch M People’s 20th Anniversary Greatest Hits Tour at BIC, Bournemouth on Saturday 12 October. To book tickets, visit www.bic.co.uk or call 0844 576 3000

The cavernous print room with its high white walls was once the printers for the Bournemouth Echo, so it’s fitting that this show is a contemporary celebration of print. From the smell of the ink, to the feel of the paper, the artists have worked in the traditional artisan methods of printmaking, creating works of art that connect The Print Room back to its heritage and proving that in a digital age, print is more alive than ever. The images are stunning; a fine backdrop for afternoon tea in this elegant eatery. For more information visit aub.ac.uk and theprintroom-bournemouth.co.uk

STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL Craig Revel Horwood chats to us about his new theatre show starring Lisa Riley and explains why the show reveals the face behind the mask
F
ollowing the continued success of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing, this new song and dance extravaganza will make your spirits soar. Written and directed by Craig Revel Horwood, the tell-it-like-it-is judge, this is your chance to hear the stars’ individual stories and watch everything from ballroom to clog dance. So how did you go about putting the show together? I interviewed Lisa Riley and professional dancers Artem Chigvintsev, Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite to find out their life stories and the ups and downs of becoming dancers that brought them to the point of being involved in Strictly. I was keen to construct a show that wasn’t just a series of demonstration dances. What can we expect from the show? Lisa will be doing the splits eight times a week which will bring water to my eyes, if not hers. I couldn’t believe it when she did it at Wembley. The entire arena shook.
It was amazing. But then so is her singing voice. You wait until you hear her version of All That Jazz. You’ll also learn about Artem’s tough time growing up in Russia, about Ian confronting his sexuality and how Natalie had to beat the odds to follow her dream. What will the show reveal about Strictly? I want to show how they’ve all battled obstacles with courage and that very often it’s through sonce and dance that they’ve found a way forward. I also want to take the audience backstage at Strictly to show the nerves that everyone feels before they come out and dance in front of 14 million people with a camera thrust in their face. I’m trying to reveal the face behind the mask. By Richard Barber You can catch Strictly Confidential starring Lisa Riley, Artem Chigvintsev, Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite at BIC, Bournemouth on Thursday 04 July (written and directed by Craig Revel Horwood).
