JENKINS & SONS @ POOLE Here at Do More, we’re very excited indeed about the newly opened Jenkins & Sons in Poole. Mark Cribb, we salute you! After 7 years developing three successful businesses in Bournemouth (Urban Beach Hotel, Urban Reef and Urban Renaissance at Russell-Cotes), Mark turned his attentions to Jenkins & Sons. Formerly Bankes Bistro, Jenkins & Sons is a stylish, new café and bar in Penn Hill. The venue has a fascinating history; many people remember it when it was a butchers called Vernon & Tear in the 1960s. J&S has been taken back to its original roots, inspired by Sidney Jenkins who built his butchers and fishmongers in the late 1920s. We love the open plan kitchen and original features reflecting the pre-war era. Mad Cucumber is the only 100% vegan bistro in Bournemouth. It’s run by Kamil and Ewelina from Poland; both are devoted vegans, passionate about serving fresh and nutritious cuisine. The vegan lounge opened in The Triangle at the end of June and has been gaining an army of devoted guests ever since. We popped down to find out why! We sampled the scrambled tofu, which was served with toast and soya butter. The tofu had a perfect consistency and blended peppers, tomatoes and spring onions. The turmeric, coriander and cumin provided a much-needed bite! In addition, we sampled the Oat & Barley Burger, served with rice and salad. It was certainly a plateful!

The last weekend in August sees Bournemouth host a spectacular aviation-inspired event. There’ll be incredible displays from the Red Arrows and the Typhoon Eurofighter, awesome jets and dusk air displays with breath-taking acrobatics.
THE FEELING BASSIST RICHARD JONES TALKS TO ALICE ROOK ABOUT THE BAND’S FORTHCOMING ALBUM ‘BOY CRIED WOLF,’ THEIR UPCOMING PERFORMANCES AT BOURNEMOUTH’S NIGHT AIR AT THE PIERS AND THE O2 ACADEMY What can we expect from your new album ‘Boy Cried Wolf’? Musically we are more grown up, so it’s a slightly more grown up sounding album. We’re getting better with our production; we’ve produced and engineered the entire album ourselves. What prompted the decision to title the album ‘Boy Cried Wolf’? One of the first songs we wrote was ‘Blue Murder’ which contains that line. It was an album inspired by change. Front-man Dan went through a difficult break-up and at the same time we left Universal Records after 7 years. The album is a combination of feeling both liberated and also a little bit scared. Because you’ve had so much success with your previous albums, do you feel pressurised to live up to similar chart performance?
I think maybe we used to, and that wasn’t healthy. Even if you do sign to a major label, there’s still 9 out of 10 acts that don’t do anything and get dropped within the first year. We were very fortunate to have the success we did. Last year we went back to the focus just being on the music and signed to a new label – BMG. They’re all so relaxed and practical about it; there isn’t massive pressure for us to sell millions of albums because we did it in our own studio. You were the most played band on UK radio in 2006. Did you ever worry about being over played? I think we were just amazed it was all happening really! We were very lucky with the timing and hit at a time when we were getting played on X FM and also on Capital, Absolute, Radio 1 and Radio 2. This would never happen now!

You’re embarking on your tour later this year. What are you most looking forward to about getting back on the road? Some sleep! I’ve got three kids at home so it will be nice to catch up on that…
You won the Ivor Novello award for songwriting a few years back. What was that experience like? That was definitely a career highlight; it’s an incredible accolade. It’s an award for songwriting voted for by songwriters, so it’s not a bunch of suits in a room working out how they can sell X amount of records for certain acts by giving awards. It’s your peers acknowledging you.
You’re married to Sophie Ellis-Bextor and have a family together. Is it a blessing to be with somebody who is also very much in the public eye? We have the best of both worlds really because whilst we can dip into that world, our home life doesn’t really get bothered. I’m just off to meet Sophie and go to our four year old’s Sports Day.
There’s no denying that a lot of your music is inspired by break ups and heartache. What is it like being so open and honest in your music? I’ve worked with Dan for years and am a big fan of his writing; I get where he’s coming from. The best songs we have are when Dan is being totally open emotionally. People can hear how honest our music is, there’s nothing contrived about it.
‘Boy Cried Wolf’ is released on 07 October. You can catch The Feeling at Night Air at the Piers (Bournemouth Air Festival) on the Corona Stage at Boscombe Pier by Wave 105 on Friday 30 August and also at O2 Academy, Bournemouth on Thursday 31 October. HEAVEN’S BASEMENT MATT PARK CATCHES UP WITH THE UK ROCKERS MINUTES BEFORE THEIR SUMMER GIG AT SOUND CIRCUS, BOURNEMOUTH You’re near the end of your headline tour, how’s it been? The whole tour has been amazing! Most venues sold out and we’ve been to a lot of places we haven’t been to before. What’s been playing on the stereo on tour? We had Michael Jackson last night, but instead of listening to music in the vans we’ve been heavily getting into Game of Thrones, we’ve exhausted two series now! You’ve toured a lot and played with some big name bands from The Darkness to Seether and Deftones, do you approach those gigs in a different way? The support tours are really exciting because you are trying to win round fans that have never seen you before. It’s great when you slowly work them around. Have you got any new material in the pipeline? Not really, the set agenda for the next year or so is to get ‘Filthy Empire’ out to everyone until we feel it has run its course and someone drags us back into the studio.
Looking back, was there any particular moment when it went from being just something to do in the evenings to being something that was really taking off? We never really did it as an ‘evening thing’ from the moment we started Heaven’s Basement, it was our lives 24/7. This tour is a bookmark of ‘that’s a step forward’ but the whole thing is a series of small steps up the ladder. Is there anywhere in particular you would like to tour or return to? We’d like to go back to Spain and we’re hoping to go to Australia next year, as we’ve not been there before. We’re very ambitious, we started the year playing in Canada in minus 31, and that didn’t bother us, we just love playing. Get your hands on a copy of ‘Filthy Empire’ and watch out for their next tour, we’re sure they’ll be back in Bournemouth soon. Follow the band on Twitter @Heavensbasement

BARBERSHOPERA THE RIDICULOUSLY FUNNY AND CHARMING BARBERSHOP QUARTET CHAT TO ALICE ROOK ABOUT THEIR FORTHCOMING ‘THE THREE MUSKETEERS’ TOUR
B
arbershopera have been charming audiences across the UK with their brilliant a cappella musicals for years. We caught up with cast member, Pete Sorel Cameron and Creator and Musical Director, Rob Castell to discuss their new production, ‘The Three Musketeers.’ If you had to sum up ‘The Three Musketeers’ in a few sentences, what would you say? Pete: It’s a fast, frantic and fun re-telling of the Dumas classic. Four actors play approximately 16 characters and there’s lots of wig swapping, lots of singing, lots of laughs and one fake moustache! Your performances are pretty spirited! You never seem to stop moving or singing. Where do you get all your energy from? Pete: Two of the current cast members are in their early 20s so have far too much energy to burn as a matter of course! However, the two elder statesmen (of which I am one) get energy from the adrenaline of performing.
You’ve won 6 Musical Theatre awards to date, congratulations! What has been the proudest moment of your career to date? Rob: The awards have been great, but the specific personal moments mean a lot more - a guy in a village hall once said, ‘I’ve had the most awful week, but that show made everything better’. You’ve performed at the Edinburgh Fringe a fair few times. What’s the experience like? Pete: The fringe is Barbershopera’s spiritual home and we love it. It’s basically a month of physically and emotionally exhausting fun, where we can perform to open-minded audiences and feel a bit like rock stars! You can catch Barbershopera’s ‘The Three Musketeers’ in The Salberg at Salisbury Playhouse from 10-12 September. To book, call 01722 320333 or visit www.salisburyplayhouse.com. The Three Musketeers also comes to Bridport Arts Centre, Bridport on Thursday 22 August and Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis on Friday 23 August.
