ANre SC for mo INTERVIEW Rob & Josie
da Bank
Camp Bestival Festival organisers Rob & Josie da Bank chat to us about the inspiration behind Camp Bestival, their fondest memories to date and the importance of fancy dress Which of you hit upon the idea for Camp Bestival first? Josie: Well we’ll always argue about who thought it up… I’m sure that I did, but Robby swears he did. Rob: We’d just started having kids ourselves and felt there was a bit of a gap in the market for a show with a really strong musical line-up alongside things for kids and families to do. If you could sum up Camp Bestival in one sentence, what would it be? Rob: A whirling merry-go-round of endless fun for everyone and the best family party you’ll ever go to! Fancy dress is obviously an important part of Camp Bestival (this year’s fancy dress theme is ‘Around The World’) – what are the best costumes that you have seen in previous years? Josie: The best costume I have ever seen is someone dressed as a take away curry at Bestival. The best costumes at Camp are when the whole family gets involved – we once had a family come as yellow coats from Hi De Hi. How does Camp Bestival differ from its sister event Bestival on the Isle of Wight? Rob: Chalk and cheese. Bestival is a vast, throbbing, psychedelic 24-hour monster, whilst Camp Bestival is its sunny, happy-go-lucky chilled-out little brother. What are you most excited to have added on-site at Camp Bestival this year? Josie: This year we have Horrible Histories, which is a firm favourite of my son Arlo - it will be super to see that. We have made some changes to the Dingly Dell; expect to see lots of fire and water and late-night storytelling. What are your plans for the future of Camp Bestival? Josie: To keep it going, to keep it the same size, to see the same children coming back and getting older and also to welcome and meet new families. And for the sun to keep shining on us! Camp Bestival runs 01-04 August this year at Lulworth Castle, Dorset. Tickets are now available for Camp Bestival from Ticketline via 0844 888 4410 or online at www.campbestival.net

VEGANISM
Do More Magazine chats to Tim Barford, Manager of VegfestUK about the recent horse meat scandal, the rise in veganism and how it affects your lifestyle How did you come to veganism? What brought you to this decision? I went vegan in 1984. It was a Live Aid thing… when I worked out that the farmers in Ethiopia were using what little resources they had to grow cattle fodder for export instead of food for the people, I knew I had to change. Then the health thing came, and with it an understanding of ethics, and the effect of livestock farming on the environment. How has being a vegan affected your lifestyle? It makes me so happy… an inner glow! Holistic healing from within - on every level. Have you seen a discernible rise in veganism since the launch of VegfestUK? Yes, a massive rise. Just this year we have had a 40% increase in interest…it’s the “horse burger effect”.
lot more friendly than meat and dairy options, we recycle a lot and are right in the city centre which makes us great for public transport. A lot of our visitors, caterers and stallholders are very environmentally conscious so it’s easy with our crowd. Do you think vegetarianism and veganism has seen an increase in popularity since the horse meat scandal this year? Absolutely through the roof! Google trends for ‘vegan,’ enquiries at The Vegetarian and Vegan Societies, and attendance at VegfestUK Brighton are all up 40% across the board. And it won’t end there…what’s next? Humans found in the meat food chain? My advice is eat vegan at the festivals at least this year – you can’t trust burgers anymore… For more information about VegfestUK, visit www.vegfest.co.uk
Do you get many people attending Vegfest who aren’t vegans or vegetarians? Do you get many converts after the festival? We get loads of people who aren’t veggie, either for the music or because they are looking at veggie options and trying to reduce their meat and dairy intake. We get a lot of people who come for the food too, even if they aren’t veggie – they just want some good veggie options in their diet. VegfestUK is perfect for them. What is the most popular vegan food on offer at the festival? Indian spicy snacks go down well, lots of wraps, falafel, pizzas (with non-dairy cheese) – this year we have a Spanish paella stall and Middle Eastern cuisine. What does VegfestUK do to ensure it is an eco-friendly festival? Apart from the food which is 100% vegan and therefore a

Purbeck Folk Festival DORSET

set on a sheep farm in the stunning Purbecks. What makes it stand out from the other festivals? Well, it’s a festival organised by festival goers and lovers. Director, Catherine Burke says, “I was dragged around festivals since I was a baby; I’ve grown up at them and I’ve literally been to hundreds over the years. I’m at my happiest playing music in a field!” Catherine and fellow director, Paul Burke (her Dad) have taken all the best bits from all the festivals they’ve been to and stuck them together to make THE best festival. Purbeck is a very friendly festival now in its fifth year. It includes folk music from all around the world; blues, singer-songwriters, Americana, Irish. There are a variety of workshops too, adding to the Purbeck magic. This year’s headliners include BBC Folk Award winners Show of Hands and Karine Polwart, urban-folk hip-hopster Dizraeli & the Small Gods, gypsy madness from Sheelanagig. INTERVIEW
THE LEVELLERS SINGER MARK CHADWICK CHATS TO ALICE ROOK ABOUT their headline slot at Camp Bestival this year, explains why The Levellers established their own Festival, Beautiful Days and discusses why it remains so popular Follow The Levellers’ tweets @the_levellers
CAMP BESTIVAL 01- 04 AUG
Congratulations on 25 years with The Levellers! There aren’t many bands that achieve such longevity, what’s the secret? Sticking to our guns and practicing what we preach! We share everything equally so there are no power struggles as such. You established your own festival, Beautiful Days in 2003. What prompted this decision? Basically it came from the fact that we’ve played so many and we’ve been to them as kids and we had the feeling we could do it better! Arrogance! There weren’t so many festivals around then, ten years ago. There’s certainly a lot more now! We wanted to create a truly family-friendly festival. We wanted people to feel that they weren’t being ripped off all the time. What do you think are the ingredients needed for a truly great festival experience? Beautiful surroundings, an eclectic mix of music, keep the prices down and sunshine – but unfortunately you can’t guarantee that! What do you think it is about Beautiful Days that makes it so popular? I think it’s so popular because it is actually run by a band. That’s different from most festivals. You’re performing at numerous festivals this year including a headline slot at Camp Bestival… Is there one in particular you are most looking forward to? We are really looking forward to Camp Bestival because we haven’t done it before, it’s a bit different. We’ve heard so many good things about it.
We can’t talk about festivals without mentioning Glastonbury! As you have seen it evolve first-hand, would you say there is anything lacking from it now that it is more commercial? I think Glastonbury does a really good job of representing the times around it to be honest. It is what it is; it’s unique. It’s pretty special, really. The folk music scene has had a dramatic surge in commercial popularity of recent years, why do you think this is? What is it people enjoy so much about this particular genre? That’s a difficult one, because I think that a lot of the new folk music isn’t folk. By my books, anyway. Yes it’s folky sounding and uses folky instruments, but the lyrics aren’t really that folky. A lot of it is quite indie. I think the reason why people like it, is because anyone can do it – you can pick up any acoustic guitar or banjo and have a party straight away! It seems like The Levellers are always on the go… Are you planning on having a rest? Well it’s not exactly the most stressful job in the world, is it? Do what you love. What else is on the horizon for you this year? In the autumn we’ll be playing some more cathedrals. We love doing those, acoustic. And then we’ll be recording a new record. The Levellers are headlining Camp Bestival at Lulworth Castle in Dorset. Camp Bestival runs 01-04 August. Visit www.campbestival. net to buy your tickets or call 0844 888 4410. Beautiful Days runs 16-18 August. Visit www.beautifuldays.org to buy your tickets.

Bellagio WINTOn
If it’s perfect, stone-baked pizzas and big portions of tasty, flavour-filled Italian cuisine you’re after you will be in heaven at Bellagio in Winton, Bournemouth. Throw in jovial staff, an extensive menu and low prices and you’ve got the restaurant of your dreams. It’s a ‘bring your own bottle of booze’ place; small but cosy, with bright yellow walls and a café atmosphere. The open kitchen lends to the jovial atmosphere as the chefs spin the pizza bases, sizzle your calamari and prepare your dish right before your eyes. I was there for a birthday meal and the table was soon loaded with great food! My starter of creamy mushrooms was enormous and my huge vegetarian calzone pizza inflated up like a puffer-fish; packed with spinach, sweetcorn and more… one could say it was packed to the gills! The price was just as fabulous, between £5 and £6 for a pizza! Lisa, the birthday girl was treated to a surprise candle-lit slice of tiramisu by the singing staff - a thoughtful touch winning more points for this review! Bellagio is definitely a restaurant to bring your mates to, if you haven’t already. For the best Italian flavours and a great ambience it’s 5 stars from us. Don’t forget to make a reservation. Cheeky Tiki Cocktails @ Lola Lo, Bournemouth
Last weekend a friend and I were invited down to Lola Lo for their Tiki Cocktail Masterclass. How could I say no to a private, fun-filled evening of cocktail making with one of their bartenders? On arrival, I was met by Deputy Manager, Lee Pittman who took us through to the bar where we began our masterclass with bartender Jo Perry and Lee. The cocktail sessions are designed to show off Lola Lo’s show-stopping range and are perfect for birthday gifts, corporate team-building activities or hen dos! The session began with creating a Mai Tai. Jo gave us a step-by-step preview and then we had to put our own mixology skills to the test! The Captain Coconut cocktail was my personal favourite and the most fun to make! The cocktail was made up of Lola Lo’s own Rum (Lola Lo Grog), Koko Kanu, fruit juices, purees and Finest Call Cream of Coconut - served in a coconut shell. INTERVIEW
SUGGS Suggs chats epic hangovers, his new show and the unyielding success of Madness
F
ollowing huge critical acclaim, Suggs is coming to Poole with a hilarious and moving one man tour, ‘Suggs: My Life Story.’ It is a reflective journey through his own highs and lows, triggering a personal quest to discover what happened to the father he never knew. Expect his trademark swagger and executed patter. How did you get the idea for the show? “I was lying in the bath on my birthday, nursing an epic hangover from the previous night’s celebrations when I heard an almighty crash. I jumped out of the water, and there, lying amid shards of broken glass, was our four-year-old cat, a British blue called Mamba. I couldn’t believe it. I loved that cat; I was really upset. It triggered a deluge of emotion, an event that somehow tipped me over the edge. I began to consider my own mortality and, out of that, the idea for exploring my own past somehow crystallised.” How would you best explain your new show? “It’s a memoir. It’s not stand-up. It’s not An Evening With… I toyed with calling it Mad-Life Crisis. In the end, though, having gone all round the houses, I’ve called it My Life Story which won’t win any prizes for originality but does at least tell you what you can expect, the good bits and the darker moments.” Why do you think Madness is still so successful? “Madness have always been about accentuating the positive. It’s no accident our songs are still played,
still enjoyed 30 years down the line. They’re upbeat, timeless, a clear-eyed celebration of life as it’s lived. And we’re still together, still making music. For me, the band has always been a bit like a surrogate family. We’re all a bit dysfunctional, all a bit stronger for being together. When we were rehearsing for this new show, my keyboard player would stop every so often and say: ‘Was that bit really true?’ And it was, all of it. Amazing, really.” You can catch Suggs, Madness singer and frontman at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts on Friday 17 May. Tickets are available from £24.50. BOURNEMOUTH FOLK CLUB @ CENTRE STAGE, BOURNEMOUTH
Bournemouth Folk Club is every musician’s favourite place to play. Why? Because it is respectful. Local singer-songwriter Krista Green says: “It’s fantastic having such a quiet, listening audience instead of the usual, noisy and chatting crowds that you get in pub gigs or at open mic nights.” That’s the key to its success – it’s more of an old-fashioned concert setting, but people come to Bournemouth Folk Club to listen to the music. And they do, they listen. Whether it’s a national or a local artist, BFC only hosts top quality music. Highlights for the upcoming months include the UK’s hottest fiddle band, Urban Folk Quartet on Sunday 12 May. They’re an innovative, four piece Anglo-Spanish band with a Celtic-global range of material. Manchester-born, Nashville-based singersongwriter, Clive Gregson plays on Sunday 19 May. Coming up in Autumn are Martyn Joseph, Chris Wood, Chris While and Julie Matthews and Cate Ferris (one of Dizraeli’s small gods!) Gigs range from £5 to £17 for the international folk names.

Jodie’s summer beauty tips Summer is scarily creeping up on us… it’s time to perfect those finishing touches with the following cheap and cheerful methods to achieve your ultimate summer look. For plumper, softer and pinker lips, try mixing crushed sugar with your lip balm and massage into your lips. The sugar acts as an exfoliator whilst the lip balm moisturises. To keep your skin soft and healthy, all you need is sea salt, almond oil and grapefruit peel. Who said anything about expensive lotions and potions? It’s important to keep your nails in good condition and show them some TLC! Push your cuticles back regularly and use some cuticle oil to care for dry and brittle nails. INTERVIEW
LEWIS MOODY Lewis Moody chats to us ahead of his appearance at Bournemouth 7s Festival in May Before you retired, how did you physically and mentally prepare for a Six Nations or World Cup game? Pre games are always a very anxious time. I would always go to the cinema as it was a way of switching off. Then when I got back to the hotel I would make a note of all areas of the game I was going to focus on the next day. What has been the greatest highlight of your career to date? Winning the World Cup in 2003 – undoubtedly one of the most amazing days of my life. Your most embarrassing moment on a rugby field? Probably running into a post when I was ten. What is the best practical joke you have seen one of the boys play? One of the best practical jokes I have ever seen has to be bed flipping a colleague when they were asleep. You are devoted to your charity work and have been a patron for HOPEHIV for the past 7 years which has taken you to Kenya several times. What was it like in Kenya? It was an eye opening experience for me to see how lucky we all are. We have no control over the life we are born in to and people’s realities are so vastly different to our own.
Now on to Bournemouth 7s… What will you be doing at the Festival this year? I will be having a lot of fun and also playing in the Dodgeball tournament with Big Red Dodgeball. I love that it has been added to the line-up. How do you think Bournemouth 7s has evolved over the years since you’ve been attending? It is almost unrecognisable when comparing it to its first year! It has grown so rapidly and is now one of the most exciting and biggest tournaments in the country. What is your favourite thing about Bournemouth 7s? The atmosphere is incredible; everyone is just there to have fun!
