80 Years on is a past ISTD brief, heavily focused on research into typography from the 1920’s and 30’s and how it has had an influence on the design aesthetic of today. I wanted to create a visually engaging publication that led the user on an exploration into type from these periods. The concept behind the book is fairly simple, split into 2 sections it showcases a series of typefaces, each section dedicated to each decade.
After general research into these decades, it became apparent that the nicknames could be very fitting for the name of each section. The twenties, also known as the ‘Roaring Twenties’ became ‘Roaring Typography’ printed in a vibrant red, whilst the thirties, branded ‘The Great Depression’ became ‘The Great Typography’, debossed into 1000gsm grey board, connoting the idea of the great depression without lowering the tone of the book.
The audience would be that of a creative nature, most likely interested in typography, however the content isn’t overly hard-nose-typography, allowing less knowledgeable users to easily approach the content and inform themselves on a visual level if not any other.
