DOM RUGMAN — OUG303 BRIEF 1 — BAGD YEARBOOK

This years BAGD yearbook was an attempt to try something slightly different to previous publications designed by third year graphic design students. We wanted to devise a way of keying each student in a fair and equal way, opting to steer away from the more conventional ‘alphabetical’ contents page.

We created a grid that allowed each student to be plotted individually according to their strengths, practice interests and also their initials. The shape generation process went through many forms of grid and formulas, with the final one offering clear, differentiating shapes.

I played a heavy role in the grid and shape generation, testing various forms and finally plotting the entire year group out using the grid exampled top left. These shapes then went on to be used as a form of logo for each student, the contents page is simply a shape and a number, correlating to their page.

Another of my roles in the BAGD yearbook collaboration was the photography of everyones work. Although not the most creative shooting, my camera techniques are limited and as I undertook it as a one man job it became quite tedious after a few solid days.

The mother copy of the document was kept with Matt and he took on the role of designing the spreads and laying out content. Whilst we all had a say in the general layout and image choices, for the document to be kept on top of and in one place was definitely a good move.

The page numbers are a reflection of how the course moves as a unit, almost working on cogs. They are made to feel as though they are on one continuous cog spinning round as each page turns.

The middle section of the book is ‘work in progress’ opposed to finished project shoots. It offers readers a taste of what current students have been up to during the FMP period and other projects they are involved in.

Quite an abstract graphic section, its is printed in black and a spot pantone on a light grey stock. This choice of print process allows the work to speak for itself, heavy black vectors sat on vivid green backgrounds offering a very graphic feel to the book.

I mocked up how the website could function with correlation to the shape system created using the grids. I like the idea of anonymity at first, much like the contents page of the publication. The striking graphic shapes are enough to intrigue a user into finding out more about the page and its contents.

The homepage has a short description about the website and every persons’ generated symbol in black. Only when a mouse is rolled over each shape does it turn green and reveal who’s work it will link to and reads a small section of that designers position statement.

Once clicked on a name, you are taken to that persons page including a bio and a selection of project shots displayed using a sideways scroll bar also flaunting the vivid green Pantone equivalent.
