Always an interest to our readers, the recovery in this issue features Pine Tree Towing & Recovery of Ohio extracting a downed helicopter from the deep woods. Be sure to check out this spectacular recovery. A must-read for all tow business owners is Jesse Lubar’s piece on seasonal marketing. Jesse discusses sound promotional practices to bring in continual revenue and stay ahead of the competition. No one in this industry is a stranger to having a tow bill disputed. Knowledge is power and we at American Towman hope that sharing the insights of industry veterans will help you in business and in life. Stay safe out there!

It’s Showtime While all of American Towman’s shows are must-see occasions for towers from all over the country, the Exposition in Baltimore on November 15-18 is our biggest event. As such, it merits some advance planning to get the most out of it. I’ve been going to shows of all types over the decades, everything from the Miami Boat Show Steve Temple to the LA Auto Show, to the SEMA show in Las Vegas, Editor among many others, so I’ve learned a few tips to share. First off, type or write down a planning sheet, listing company names, phone numbers, and booth locations. Or, if you can download a show program, or get one on site, use a yellow highlighter to mark all the important exhibits, workshops, and seminars that you plan to visit. The workshops and seminars at the Exposition provide exceedingly valuable information, so check off the ones that are a high priority for your business, and take notes when you attend, too. Before you start walking the show floor, make sure to wear comfortable shoes and carry a water bottle to stay hydrated. And take a sit-down break every so often. When you get a business card or product literature, make notes on them to jog your memory later on. Also, carry a bag (usually available free at one of the exhibitor booths) so you can keep them all in one place, or put the business cards in your badge holder. Lastly, don’t forget to vote for your favorite tow truck in the Wrecker Pageant, and enjoy a free slice of pie, too!

“White Line Warriors” will be acknowledged for their bravery at the 34th American Towman Exposition. Many of them will be honored with the first-ever Valor Pin. “We’ve been honoring towmen for heroic acts for 34 years,” said Steve Calitri, the Exposition’s founder. “This is the first time we’ll be recognizing all towmen who brave the roadways to serve the American motorists and truck drivers.” Towmen will be feted with a recording of Mike Corbin singing Home of the Brave in the registration lobby inside the Baltimore Convention Center, and during his live performance on Festival Night. Advance registration may be completed online at atexposition.com.

DOT Amends Drug Testing Requirements The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recently issued a final ruling that authorizes employers to use oral fluid drug testing as an alternative testing methodology to traditional urine drug testing (49 CFR part 40). This additional methodology for drug testing will give employers a choice that will help combat employee cheating on urine drug tests and provide a less intrusive means of achieving the safety goals of the program. The TRAA, which filed a comment in support of the measure, maintains that an alternative method provides a lower cost and faster solution with equivalent efficacy that ultimately benefits employers and employees alike. TRAA Stands with

Coalition Against Bigger Trucks

In light of proposed federal legislation to increase the weight limits on trucks H.R.3372 , TRAA maintains its opposition to this proposed legislation. Current weight limits are 80,000 pounds, but a pilot project would allow states to increase that level to 91,000 pounds. It would also raise the weight limits of trucks carrying automobiles from 80,000 pounds to 88,000 pounds. TRAA has long opposed increases in truck weight, arguing that towing companies should be exempted because it would increase the amount of time tow operators would be roadside splitting combination vehicles and in harm’s way. TRAA has taken an increasingly larger role within the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks (CABT) to fight these provisions. The coalition argues that with the backlog of infrastructure repairs to our highways at $121 billion, increasing truck weights would add to the burden of highway repair and budget deficits. Last year, the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks released results of a survey that said 68% of professional truck drivers believed that heavier or longer trucks

A pilot program would increase weight limits on trucks, to which TRAA is opposed. would make it more difficult to recruit or retain drivers. About 85% of truckers in the survey said they believed heavier and longer trucks would negatively affect safety. A majority of truck drivers said that bigger trucks are more difficult to stop, more likely to roll over and and ultimately lead to more wear and tear on key truck components. TRAA is actively participating in CABT Hill meetings, has sent letters to Congress on this issue, and is playing a lead role in the CABT with over a dozen Members of Congress. All Roads Acquires West End Service and Capitol Truck Equipment

Awarded $1.28 Million

Tow companies in West Jordan, Utah got some relief after a jury decided to award them $1.28 million because their due process rights were violated when they were booted off a rotation list and left unable to use their tow lot. Lisa Butcher, owner of Mountain West Towing for over ten years, said she purchased the property with the intention of using it for her company, but for the past five years she’s been blocked from using it as a work location.”. Despite other tow companies having previously worked from that property, Lisa indicated that…”everything was fine for four years until 2017, when she said the city told her she was in violation of a city ordinance. “I’ve never been out of compliance,” she said. I’ve followed all the rules that they wanted. I’ve never had any complaints.” Suddenly she found her company removed from the city’s rotation, without any notification. “We had no idea we’d been taken off

Memphis to Offload Vehicles to Private Storage Lots The Memphis police impound lot, packed with nearly 3,000 vehicles, is reforming its policies and seeking to transfer vehicles, except those used for evidence in court cases, to private lots. They will also send stolen vehicles found on scene to private lots if they cannot contact the owner of the vehicle. Tow operator, William Anderson, expressed some relief over this new policy, as he said that he has waited hours to retrieve a vehicle from the impound lot. “Sometimes you can be out here three or four hours, just waiting in line,” Anderson said. Various drivers have said their cars have been stuck for days or even weeks at a time because tow truck drivers could not enter the lot. Since mid-July the Memphis Police Department has implemented a policy to reduce the number of vehicles, and data shows that the numbers of vehicles

West End Service and Capitol Truck Equipment have a tremendous reputation for quality work and customer relationships. As we integrate their capabilities into our robust portfolio, we intend to uphold and continue their tradition of excellent service.” In conjunction with the acquisition, All Roads Trucks will become a distributor for Miller Industries. Seasonal Marketing Avoid Slowdowns in Revenue by Using Innovative Methods By Jesse Lubar

L Jesse Lubar is CEO at OMG National and its OMG Tow Marketing division. In addition to managing the operations of the company and its staff of 140 team members, Jesse regularly speaks on advertising and marketing at American Towman’s tow shows.

ike many businesses, the towing industry is affected by the seasons. Summers mean more vehicles on busy highways, while winter weather brings icy roads, slippery conditions, and other such hazards. Seasons are unique to geographical regions, and in many cases, the towing business ebbs and flows due to this seasonality. If you’ve been around and operated your business for a while, you know that too much ebbin’, and not enough flowin’, makes it hard to run the business. This can ultimately affect your staffing requirements, where your trucks are positioned, and most important, it can interrupt vital cash flow. Analyzing these conditions though, can empower you by providing information needed to create a plan. This plan, which should be responsive to changing conditions, can help smooth out these choppy waters and assist you in maintaining a consistent flow of inbound calls.

Stranded motorists or accident victims naturally go to their phone for help, be sure your business is standing out in Google search.

GOOGLE IT

Your marketing and advertising strategy should be developed to keep you ahead of any impact that seasonality might create. Many towing companies use Google Ads to help boost call volume throughout the year. Once your ads are performing, they can be scaled up to capture more of the calls in your market. Then, your budget can be adjusted to accommodate the need for more or less calls, depending on how the seasons are forecasted to affect your business. For instance, if you are in a beach town or otherwise touristy area where there is more opportunity in the summer, you may want to increase your budget during that period and adjust the campaign radius to capitalize on it. Once you are up and running with a

successful campaign, it becomes easy to calculate an average CPC (cost-per-call) in your area. As an example, if your calls are averaging $10 each in marketing expenses, you can use that number to budget for those times when you know that things are naturally going to slow down. Or, for when you have additional capacity and want to open the spigot.

CASE STUDY

As an example, Jeremy Procon of Interstate Towing uses OMG Tow Marketing's Google Ads to generate calls at the lowest possible rate. For around $20 per call, they get several each day. The call types run the gamut from lockouts and fuel deliveries to truck and trailer accidents, and everything in between. Knowing the approximate cost per call enables Interstate to set pricing that works. During periods where they need more volume, or when there is more activity to capture, their budget can be increased to ensure that their ads are present across Google, ready to attract the additional work. When there are weeks when he needs more volume, or when there is going to be more activity to capture, he ramps up his budget to ensure that he is present across Google and ready to grab the calls. During peak times when the calls are flowing in, his company relies on its investment in their

foundational online strategy to keep the trucks running and the team busy. Their overall online presence and solid reputation help do the selling, and online procedures ensure that the work is managed efficiently. “We make sure that our website and directory pages are kept up to date, that we have fresh social media posts, and that our reviews are flowing,” Jeremy points out. “We implemented this strategy several years ago and it hasn’t let us down.” While adjusting ad budget and other campaign settings can be an effective way of adapting your strategy to keep the calls coming, there are some marketing elements which should remain in place year-round. Investing in a strong foundational marketing plan has proven time and time again to yield the highest dividends at the lowest cost. However, your business can only realize these benefits if you understand the landscape and remain consistent.

STRATEGIC THINKING

Some of these strategies include the following. Strong Branding-Brightly colored, prominent graphic designs on your

trucks not only make them stand out, but also differentiate your company from the competition. Visuals are very effective at helping you to become “the guy” they call when they need a tow. When motorists in your market need assistance, there should be no question about which company comes to mind first. The colorful trucks that they see often and consistently create familiarity, consumer awareness and brand

recognition, all solidifying that your business will be the obvious choice. Complete Your Online Footprint— Make the effort to claim and buildout a comprehensive online presence across directory sites such as Google, Bing and Yelp. Adding creative content to Social Media sites like Facebook and Instagram is a smart and effective tactic. While going through this exercise will help make the phone ring, these platforms

actually provide much more—an overall narrative which tells your story, provides consistency, and fosters recognition and consumer awareness. Your pages should not only say who you are and what you do, but also list your services and provide photos to personalize the business. This approach serves as a tool in online searches, and also as a resource which will encourage prospective customers to follow through and call you when they are in need.

Happy Customers Bring More Customers—Implement a system for collecting positive online reviews after each job. Make it easy for customers to leave those glad tidings by providing them with a direct link to your Google business profile. This has the potential to help winover a potential customer who is considering whether or not to call your company, and has also proven to be a strong Google ranking factor in your local market. With so many options available to

help towers generate more calls, it can be challenging to determine which one is the best. But, not knowing can be costly. Using a professional marketing firm is something that every tow operation should consider before investing in Google Ads or other types of advertising. Just as you know the difference between your J-hook and your winch line, they know your ad radius from your keyword universe. And more important, which KPI (Key Performance Indicators) are the most relevant to a tow-centric, calls-based ad strategy. To summarize, a pro will drive the right kind of calls to your operation, at the lowest possible cost.

AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH

In the June 2018 edition of American Towman, I wrote an article about something new that Google was testing in the towing industry. While it didn’t materialize in towing at the time, it did accelerate across the country in an array of industries. It was called, Local Services Ads by Google, and is also recognized as Google Guaranteed or Google Screened. These new ad types are just now, some five years later, finally launching in several automotive categories, including towing and roadside services. These ads are Google’s answer to Angie’s List (now Angi), in that they are designed to provide the most trusted, experienced, and highest rated providers at the top of the page. Qualifying for the program requires a bit of work, but as long as you have insurance, can pass a background check, and have a Google Business Profile with at least five reviews of three stars or more, you’re good to go. Currently, these ads are only available as a trial in California and Florida, with a nationwide rollout expected over the next few months. To better understand how they

estate agent, or an injury lawyer. If available in your region, the search results will show you how the ads are presented. For towing, the designation will be what they call Google Screened. Once you are approved for this new program, you can decide if you want to run the ads. Just like traditional Google Ads, they can be activated and deactivated at will, but there are several key differences which make them a most unique opportunity. One significant difference in particular should be mentioned: Advertiser Since a solid online foundation is essential to success, protection. Unlike other start there and then get educated on the options for other advertising. Google Ads programs, these calls are guaranteed by Google, differ from the traditional Google meaning that spam calls, or calls Pay-Per Click Ads, do a search for from anyone who cannot do business a business service in your area such as a plumber, electrician, a real with you, will cost you nothing. The

lead/call dispute feature provides protection to you as an advertiser and ensures that you are only charged for valid calls, made by customers in your established service area, for services which you have agreed to provide. This means you aren’t paying for errant clicks, competitor calls, or spam/junk calls. Over the next several months, Google Local Services Ads will be rolled out for towers in markets across the U.S. and will significantly impact the landscape for paid Google Ads. To summarize, be sure that your business is prepared for seasonal changes, have a go-to plan at the ready, and stay on top of new marketing technology, so you can keep your tow trucks rolling all year long.

ChoppeR Down! Pine Tree Towing Goes Into the Woods for a Recovery By Steve Temple

he call into the 911 emergency line this past Summer would have stunned even the most experienced call center operator: “I’ve just crashed my helicopter!” the pilot exclaimed. “Can you repeat that?” was the phone operator’s puzzled response.

The pilot explained that his chopper went down in the woods, and he was a little banged up, but otherwise okay. Resourceful first responders were able to find him deep in the woods of southeast Ohio, near Caldwell, by pinging his phone. After an initial assessment of his condition, they took him to the local hospital for a wellness checkup. What didn’t turn out so well though, was the initial attempt to retrieve the heavily damaged copter. The insurance company wanted to rely on an aircraft recovery crew from Tennessee. they showed up with a mini crane on tracks and a gooseneck trailer, but admitted right away that they wouldn’t be able to extract the copter from the woods. Cutting down some trees was discussed as well, but the landowner refused, as that would disturb the wildlife in his recreational hunting area. Also, the nearest freight helicopter available for lifting out the stricken chopper was based in faraway Wyoming, which would come at an exorbitant cost. So, what to do? “I know a guy that can get it out,” said Noble county sheriff,

Jason Mackie. He’s relied on Ron Meyers of Pine Tree Towing & Recovery for decades, dating back to his early years as a rookie in the police academy. The sheriff had to repeat his recommendation of

Handling Luxury Motor Coaches A Few Pointers for Tackling a Different Type of Tow By John L. Hawkins

T

owing a high-end coach requires a special level of expertise, as demonstrated by Miller representatives at a tow show in Florida earlier this year. Starting with the basics, the single 24 • October 2023 | Towman.com

most important aspect is to know your coach: make, model, length, and weight (not only the total, but also the front and rear axle weights). Make sure you weigh them separately. In addition, use a tape measure to find the length in inches from the edge of the front bumper to the center line of the steering axle. Do you know what type of suspension the coach has? If equipped with an I-beam suspension, as found on a truck chassis, this type can be towed with a standard frame or axle fork attachment. Alternatively, an A-frame suspension (either spring or airbag), which is found on almost all high-end coaches, requires a "tire lift" attachment only. Even so, some Prevost models can be towed with frame forks on the heavy-duty pull eye, which is located forward of the A-arm box (but this is as a last resort only).

OWNER INPUT

Determine where the generator is, and if it’s located at the front, the exhaust pipe and muffler may need to be removed for sufficient clearance. Also, find out how tall the coach is at the highest point. If a tow company is using a road tractor pulling a 48-foot sliding axle trailer that tilts to the ground to allow the coach to be winched up and on to the deck, this setup may be too tall to clear overpasses and other obstacles. In some instances, a permit might need to be arranged to move a tall vehicle, so find out beforehand if there will be overpasses that will be encountered on the tow, and/or if a permit will need to be arranged. The owner of the motor coach should be familiar with their service provider, and whether or not they purchased an extended service program (through AAA, Good Sam, or others). Even if the coach owner

has one, along with an insurance policy that covers towing, that doesn’t guarantee getting the right service. So, it’s better for the owner and tow company to be in direct contact (rather than through a call center) to make sure the tow operator has the skills and equipment to handle this special vehicle.

Work the non-traffic side - Stay Safe!

It’s essential for the tow operator to know the locations to tie into air connections, for using and releasing the air brakes, along with airing up the air-ride of the coach. Other aspects to be familiar with include the transmission make and model, and the driveline and/or half-shaft that disconnect the engine from the transmission. Important note: An automatic transmission cannot be operated without the engine running, as this is what supplies lubrication to the working components.

POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS

In addition, it’s important to bear in mind that drive lines on a motor coach are short and sometimes difficult to reach due to the coach’s low ground clearance. In some cases, a tow operator will have to pull the half-shafts out of their axle housings,

Proper cribbing requires running the board lengthwise instead of going across the tread.

which requires removing the chrome top hats. When one side of the coach is located up against a concrete barrier, the coach might need to be moved to provide sufficient clearance. This process should incur a surcharge, which must be clearly specified upfront, as well as itemized in the final invoice. The front axle weight is some 6,000 to 7,000 lbs greater than a single steer with a lift axle. So, there are four axles always on the ground for better braking. The front tires and geometry are designed to turn the vehicle better than a single steer, with the safety of four tires on the front and not two. Nothing comes close to the stability and safety of a tandem tandem tow truck.

Tow Boss

Financial Shields Protecting Your Tow Bill from Challenges By John Borowski

H

aving to defend your invoice for services rendered can be extremely frustrating. But they don’t need to be, and if handled correctly, they won’t be. Inevitably, invoices that are not clear and concise, or look sloppy, will likely meet with customer resistance. In today’s volatile tow-business world, especially with non-consensual towing, you can expect that there will be some challenges. Often this type of tow is disputed for any possible, dreamt-up reason, mostly to avoid having to pay it. The very best way to protect your billing is to make sure it’s detailed and accurate each and every time.

CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS

John Borowski has over 45 years experience as a tow business owner, wrecker manufacturer specialist, trainer and writer. He was awarded the first “Towman of the Year” by American Towman magazine and two Towman Medals for heroism. He was inducted in the Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame in 2001.

Firstly, your company should have an Employee Handbook that encompasses every policy and practice within your company. This must include a full description of the policies and practices that any employee can follow. It must also provide information for reference when the standard situation changes, and the employee is forced to switch gears. This will ensure that company protocol is not jeopardized. This practice will undoubtedly minimize employees having to make repetitive inquiries about various accounting procedures, as it establishes a standard company policy for billing and

customer satisfaction, and will also provide consistency in pricing and billing. Secondly, every company should also have a functional Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). An SOP clearly defines how you want your business to operate, and establishes all of the varying characteristics of your business. Pricing for all nonconsensual tows should be visibly posted, or at the very least, available for customers to review upon request. This basic information is a crucial step to ensuring and maintaining consistency with billing. In addition, invoices should be computerized, with the ability to be printed out as well. Any services beyond the basics should be clearly specified on the invoice. Once all of this fundamental information is functioning, you will be ready to defend your charges. Providing clear and precise invoices will go a long way in reducing payment disputes. The more professional the bill is (along with your customer reception area), the fewer the number of challenges you’ll encounter, which can equate to less time in the courthouse.

GOING BEFORE A JUDGE

If you are forced to defend yourself against a billing complaint in a court

If you do end up in legal proceedings over a disputed invoice, be prepared to substantiate that your company or employee has acted in accordance with company policies, and utilized consistency in billing.

of law, it is imperative that you are able to substantiate that your company or employee has acted in accordance with your SOP, and utilized consistency in billing. Physical appearances and a courteous demeanor really count as well, so if you are required to go to

court, dress and act appropriately, in keeping with the professionalism of your company. If the actual price is the argument, you can explain the amount of expenses that are necessary for you to be on scene when tow services are requested. Be prepared to present documentation of actual costs for everything needed on a tow or recovery to validate your courtroom testimony. It is important to remember that non-consensual tows were not ordered by the vehicle owner. So, this basic fact, compounded by the customer not having their transportation available and now facing a bill, tends to ignite short fuses. When you first speak with your customer, be sympathetic and understanding, and above all, remain calm in these potentially difficult situations. Put yourself in a customer’s shoes. Everybody has been there, had

It’s obvious what’s wrong with this invoice. Not only is it barely legible, it also doesn’t itemize the charges and thus is likely to be challenged.

ACME TOWING, ANYTOWN, USA

This professional-looking invoice is printed from a computer file, clearly itemizes all of the charges, and will be difficult to dispute.

a bad day and receiving a bill with an attitude. Yet, all you want is to be paid for the job you performed. Expressing empathy and providing a clear and concise bill can go a long way in reducing rejections. On the other hand, copping a lousy attitude will certainly escalate encounters to a whole different level, causing a customer to reach their boiling point, and eventually find their way into court.

ANOTHER SOLUTION

Finally, if you want to discount a tow for any reason, do not lower the price for just an individual item. If you are going to discount, offer a percentage off the bill. In other words, if you have a $1000 invoice, and you feel that the customer has a financial hardship and might end up challenging the bill out of desperation, offer a goodwill 10%

discount. Changing service prices have the tendency to backfire if a judge asks if you follow your rates, but by offering a percentage off the bill, you can honestly answer ‘yes’. Discounting can be a great way of getting more than you would for a scrapped vehicle. However, if your prices vary, word will get out. When tow companies willingly discount vehicles to insurance companies, you will earn a dodgy reputation in the industry and find that you will be negotiating all of your larger tow bills because they know you will lower your ticket price. It’s better to be known for getting the price you charge, so if you discount as indicated, you can say that this invoice does not qualify for any adjustments. Be known for your quality of service, not the cheapest negotiated prices.

Peterbilt Celebrates Model 389 Milestone

Peterbilt Motors Co. marked the production of the 100,000th Model 389 at its Denton, Texas, manufacturing plant on September 7. The Model 389 was introduced in 2006, and this 100,000 milestone truck is equipped with the limited-release Model 389X special edition package. Peterbilt presented the truck to Nacogdoches, Texas-based freight shipping service Massey Motor Freight. The Model 389 will end its nearly two-decade production run at the end of the year. The Model 589 was introduced earlier this year as

its replacement. Production of the Model 589 is set to begin in January at the same production facility. In related news, Peterbilt has added Hendrickson’s Primaax EX Suspension as an option. This severe-duty system is designed for construction, refuse, mixer, logging, and heavy-haul applications. It will be available as part of the chassis enhancements for Peterbilt’s 365, 367, 389, 567, 579 and 589 models. Primaax EX is available in capacities of 46,000 pounds and 52,000 pounds, has a 10-inch ride height, and is compatible with drum and air disc brakes. The system incorporates optimized suspension geometry, which helps minimize driveline vibrations, control suspension windup and corresponding frame rise, Hendrickson claims. Paccar Inc.’s unit Peterbilt already offered a variety of Hendrickson products including primary drive suspensions, auxiliary lift axles, steer axles, bumpers and

Cummins and Chevron Advance Strategic Collaboration

Cummins Inc. and Chevron U.S.A. Inc. announced a memorandum of understanding to leverage complementary positioning in hydrogen, natural gas, and other lower carbon fuel value chains. The announcement expands the two companies’ previous strategic collaboration on hydrogen and renewable natural gas, and is expected to encompass other liquid renewable fuels, such as renewable gasoline blends, biodiesel and renewable diesel. This collaboration is intended to encourage commercial and industrial adoption in North America. Cummins and Chevron each

have contributed to the research, development and global deployment of alternative fuels innovation, systems and technologies and will work together on enabling the commercial development at scale of alternative fuels production, transportation, and delivery systems for industrial and commercial markets.

Upcoming Ford Features

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an extendable cargo bed sidewall that could be used in future Ford pickups for increased tool and equipment storage. The company has been developing several ways to optimize the cargo-carrying capacity of pickups, filing patents for various features such as an extendable rail assembly, a cargo bed module receiving system, and a sidewall storage compartment. In addition, for those looking to enhance the 2023 Ford F-250 and F-350 four-wheel drive, single-rear-wheel models towing capability can do so with one of four new LoadLifter kits from Air Lift. Each is designed to work in tandem with the truck’s stock suspension to level the vehicle, eliminate “squat,” and help prevent other common issues such as poor headlight aim, body roll, bottoming out, and unresponsive steering while towing. TRUE VALOR Having honored our industry’s heroes since 1989 with the Towman Medal, American Towman is now recognizing the everyday mettle of all “white line warriors” at this year’s Exposition. Attendees who supported the idea of the Valor Pin will be able to be pinned in the registration lobby against the backdrop of a photo wall that depicts the roadside dangers towmen face. “All attendees should stand proud,” said Steve Calitri, who

created the Valor Pin with his graphics wizard, Ryan Oser. Calitri recounts a call he got from an Idaho towman commenting on the Pin. “I didn’t think of myself being out there doing my job as someone with valor. Then I thought on it when I saw this Valor Pin. And you’re right, we all deserve to wear it.” To commemorate the first year of recognizing all towmen for their valor, the registration lobby will be filled with the sound of Mike Corbin’s newest song, Home of the Brave.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME SINCE 1989 There are towmen who’ve never missed an American Towman Exposition, and the Inner Harbor is key reason why. Historic in the truest sense with old sailing vessels sand submarines, a coast guard ship from Pearl Harbor, For t McHenry (War of 1812) that inspired The Star Spangled Banner, and sites dating to the American Revolution. If you’re looking some night life, the Powerplant offers great food and enter tainment. Calitri’s Cuba takes place there at Luckie’s Tavern. Throw in the National Aquarium, Maryland Sci-

ence Center, and the B&O Railroad Museum (shor t cab ride away), and chow down to your hear t’s content at the many restaurants from Harborplace to Fells Point (a water taxi takes you there). Find out why more towmen have experienced the Inner Harbor than any other destination site in America. The American Towman Academy has changed towmen’s lives forever, making their businesses more profitable and the running of them more enjoyable. The car te blanche passpor t is a great deal, and includes breakfast each morning.

NETWORKING & LEGENDARY HOSPITALITY

GOLD NUGGETS OF CASUAL CONVERSATION How valuable are the words when the towman next to you says, “Ever since I gave my tow operators their own company business cards with their name on it, good things have come from it …” Or, “I kept bringing cookies to the women at City Hall, and that finally got me the audience with the Mayor that got me on the rotation

list.” Or, “I decided to upgrade our men’s skill set by springing for WreckMaster training for all of them. I’m getting some real sleep for the first time since I can remember.” Towmen networking at the various Exposition events find as many of these nuggets as they do in the Academy seminar rooms. For an industry that holds back talking

to one another on home turf, in Baltimore they can talk up a storm, and there is plenty worth listening to. Where else can you indulge in sinful activity that is not fattening, but Calitri’s Cuba, where the world’s finest hand-rolled cigars are served up. Experienced cigar aficionados know that holding the smoke and its flavor in the palate, and not inhaling, is the only way to enjoy the tobacco leaves. Towmen and tow-women of all stripes come together for the industry’s greatest networking event at Luckie’s Tavern at the Power Plant, 9–11 on Friday night. Pow-wow with the industry’s

Generals, enjoying sanctuary far from the battlefields of competitive towing.

TOWI NG BUSI N ESS

Tow Pro Tips on Presenting a Professional Image By Jimmy Santos

T Jimmy Santos: Safety Editor

ow company owners, operators and employees all have a responsibility to project a professional image. Admittedly, our industry sometimes gets a bad rap from the public. As just one example, a trainer at the local gym recently related an all-too typical experience: ’The last time I needed something towed, a big guy in dirty clothes and a sketchy truck showed up,” he stated. Fortunately everything went well, but that gritty image met his stereotypical perception of towers. Regrettably,

78 • October 2023 | Towman.com

perception can become someone’s reality, even when it isn’t true. Most men and women in the towing industry take their roles in this industry very seriously, and dress and act accordingly. Of course there will always be a handful of those who just don’t care, but no matter who or where you are in the towing industry, it’s vital to act like a pro at all times. Beginning at the moment the phone rings, continuing while the job is performed and even when following up after the invoice is paid.

WHAT’S A TOW PRO? is a way of thinking, behaving, and appearing that demonstrates a commitment to excellence in all aspects of one’s work. While there are many moving parts that encompass a professional company image, the obvious ones include employee appearance

Showing respect for a customer’s car, along with handling equipment details carefully, are hallmarks of professionalism.

and behavior, along with a clean and well-maintained tow truck. But how about phone etiquette, customer communications, safety, and training? All of these should come into play when establishing a company culture of professionalism.

80 • October 2023 | Towman.com

WORDS MATTER

Let’s start with the first point of contact with your company. How is your phone etiquette and customer communications? Friendly and positive interactions are essential to any relationship, and that is

what you strive to build with any customer—a professional working relationship. How you answer the phone can dictate the experience your customer will have. Customers rarely want to call a tow company, as it’s usually during one of their worst moments. It is the tow staff’s responsibility to redirect that negative experience and turn it into a positive one. If you alleviate some of that stress on the phone, when tow operators arrive, they will have a good opportunity to continue with an excellent customer experience. So if you were a customer calling for a tow, which would you rather hear? “Five Star Towing” or “Good Morning! Five Star Towing. How may I help you?” Word choices and a friendly tone really do matter! The first response emits a feeling of, “Whattya want?” The second one, however, expresses personal concern and immediately offers

Even though there are times when employees are rolling out of bed to take a call, they should

not look like it.

A neat and orderly tow facility instills pride and professionalism.

practical assistance. Even if you’re having a bad day, when the phone rings, a professional voice should kick in the moment you pick up. Don’t make your problems your potential customer’s problems.

82 • October 2023 | Towman.com

In addition, do you end your call with a “Thank you”? This simple courtesy goes a long way. Customers have many choices, so be grateful when they choose you. It’s important to say it.

Phone etiquette doesn’t have to stop there. If a customer is waiting in their vehicle, call them when the operator is on his way with a reasonable ETA. This practice reduces anxiety due to unknowns and goes a long way in preventing your operator from rolling up on an angry driver. Often the simplest practices make the biggest differences.

COMPANY AMBASSADORS

How would you describe the presentation of your employees as frontline representatives engaging with your customers daily? The first thing that comes to everyone’s mind about a professional appearance is the quality of the company uniforms. While professional attire is an obvious starting point, it is not the whole story. Wearing goodquality, safe boots and making sure any additional clothing (sweatshirt, hat, etc.) looks clean and respectful is important as well. Even though this industry demands that employees will often have to roll out of bed to take a call, they should not look like it. Another aspect is employee behavior. Managers will never be able to completely control employee behavior, but there’s a choice to accept it or not. As an example, one

employee went off on a customer, and began swearing, yelling, and throwing things. There was very little respect for the customer and the company—and himself, for that matter. Realizing at this moment that the operator was probably

never going to conduct himself properly, the tow manager chose not to accept this behavior and gave him his walking papers. Admittedly, while it can be really tough to find quality operators, the headaches that come with a troublesome employee are just not worth it.

ROLLING BILLBOARDS

Regarding your tow trucks, are they clean and properly maintained? Your wreckers, after all, are your rolling billboards, so what do they say about you? Will customers encounter a polished, organized, and well-running rig? Or will they see a dirty, disorganized and unsafe vehicle? Most people love Mater, the cartoon character from the movie Cars. Realistically speaking though,

86 • October 2023 | Towman.com

would you want your child riding in that tow truck? Taking pride in your equipment directly indicates to your customer that you will do the same for their personal vehicle.

TOP PRIORITY

Is safety and training your number one concern? While you could follow everything mentioned in this article, if your operator shows up and acts haphazardly or appears to be improperly trained, any professional qualities they might actually have are now lost. A safe towing procedure must be your first priority, above everything else. As with many other lines of work, safety is always foremost, and training is mandatory. This is the foundation of your success as a tow pro.

Towing Operators

Dealing With Divas Practical Ways to Handle Difficult Staff By Randall C. Resch

Operations Editor Randall C. Resch is a retired California police officer and veteran tow business owner, manager, consultant and trainer. He writes for TowIndustryWeek. com and American Towman, is a member of the International Towing & Recovery Hall of Fame and recipient of the Dave Jones Leadership Award. Email Randy at rreschran@gmail.com.

I

t seems that every company has at least one employee who acts like a diva or prima donna. In other words, someone with a “me first” attitude who finds it difficult to work under direction or as part of a team. Clearly, this unfavorable trait can negatively impact the effectiveness of a close-knit crew of tow operators. For example, consider the operator who stares down his dispatch manager and says, “I ain’t taking that call,” or, “I

88 • October 2023 | Towman.com

wasn’t hired to do that!” Although assigned a reasonable task, what gives him/her the right to challenge management or even the dispatcher ’s directions? If the operator continues to adamantly refuse them, what are your next steps? Before delving into the right approach to take with difficult staff, a tow company should first have an effective PPM (Policy and Procedures Manual), along with a signed agreement from every employee on their date of hire, regardless of position or timein-grade. If company guidelines don’t include specific expectations in the manual, how can management override an operator ’s resistant behavior? A non-existent or vague manual can give free rein to a self-serving employee and prove detrimental to the company. Because towing and recovery are far different from other industries, acceptable practices should speak specifically to a company’s personnel. So, let’s review some basic topics that should be included in the PPM.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

To achieve professional competency, commitment and effort is required on the part of every employee. For any company, a great financial expenditure in property and equipment is only one part of their commitment. In addition, a

company must be totally dedicated to its operational platform on a consistent basis and prepared to properly meet a variety of demands. Both management and personnel must have the right attitude for required performances day and night. It is the direct responsibility of the company to instill proper work standards in its employees by way of written rules, guidelines and training, if necessary. A well-written PPM should never be cookie-cutter in design, but rather, tailored to fit the company’s personality and situation. While PPMs can be loosely derived from internet templates, regulations should be specific to the business niches served. For instance, the PPM for a company that relies mostly on car carriers should include their wider range of recovery capabilities

beyond merely loading vehicles. A comprehensive PPM must cover topics typical to the industry, as well as your company’s regional human-resource laws. Note the following recommendations: • Visions and operating principles • Missions and goal statements • Services and products • Safety and risk management • Job descriptions, tasks, work expectations • Employee administration (pay, vacation, benefits,

annuity program(s), medical, etc.) • Guidelines for continuous improvement, growth, longterm successes • A foundation for developing long-term relationships, exemplary performance, and rewards • Disciplinary processes for improper behaviors, ethics, and non-compliance

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS Because

industry requires a different type of employee, there are various atypical requirements your PPM can include. These could consist of unauthorized visitors, ride-along passengers, sleeping on-the-clock, purchase of auction vehicles, financial assistance, employee losses and damages, dress codes, return of company issued keys and property, and so on. Here are some specific examples: Job Descriptions: Identify duties, obviously with different tasks for each position including pay rates, schedules, and further details describing the position and its responsibilities. A thoroughly written description is the company’s counter to employees claiming that it’s not their job. Equal Opportunity Statements (EOS): Typically located within the opening pages, EOS statements invite equal fairness to the workplace for all employees with regard to race, religion, color, sex, national origin, age, disability, or veteran’s status. position or status. Work Hours/Agreed Situations: Work situations demand a clear-cut narrative specific to hours worked and in relation to the company’s At-Will Policy. Narrative should define the following work situations: • Regular, Full-Time • Regular, Part-Time • Temporary Employee • Provisional Employee • Exempt Employee • Non-Exempt Employee • Salary Employee • Commission Employee At-Will Statement: One of a PPM’s most challenging aspects explains that employees are (generally) hired, “At-Will.” Employees should understand they can be dismissed at the company’s will, with or without cause; also allowing employees to equally terminate their own employment. If state law allows an At-Will relationship, this statement should be signed and witnessed by management with a copy placed in employee files. Safety Mandates: Employees shall adhere to city, state, OSHA, and federal laws specific to the position.

Issued Equipment: A company must predetermine if uniforms, jackets, rain gear, invoice boxes, lockout tools, flashlights, PPE, etc., are issued at no cost to the employee. However, if the company purchases or rents equipment/clothing, it must be made clear to the employee that those items will be collected upon leaving the company. PPMs should include an itemized list of what’s issued, the turn-in process, and if employees must pay for lost or damaged equipment/clothing. Industry Specific Training: A number of questions need to be addressed in this area. For instance, if positions require specific training, does the company deduct training costs from employee pay? Is training elective versus required by law? If OSHA requires a forklift operator ’s certificate, does the company charge the employee for operator training? Can an employee pay for specific training on their own and get reimbursed? As an alternative, the company might pay for initial training as long as the employee remains for a previously agreed upon length of time. If the employee terminates

To minimize issues with difficult staff members, a tow company should first have an effective PPM (Policy and Procedures Manual) on file, one that employees agreed to abide by at their initial hiring.

the relationship prior to that time, the company could consider deducting training costs from their final pay. But be sure that this type of deduction qualifies as a “contract” allowable by law. Damages or Lost Monies: When operators damage vehicles, or if monies are lost by office staff or operators, can losses be deducted from the employee’s pay? Dereliction of Duty: When there’s a need to dismiss a problematic employee for repeated violations, are they dismissed for single or multiple violations? In the PPM’s performance category, a “Dereliction of Duty” clause could include wording that relates to poor performance and documented disciplinary actions. This area best describes employees who can’t, or won’t, meet company expectations. Take-Home Vehicles: Do positions require takehome tow trucks or other company vehicles? Who’s responsible for the vehicle’s upkeep, fuel, insurance, and security? Are employees considered “on-call workers” subject to commission or hourly pay? Can take-home vehicles be used for personal errands? Accessibility to Management: Employees have a right to access management when there are

issues involving work, family, or their personal lives, especially if it affects their abilities, ethics, and productivity. The PPM should explain how to access management via the company’s Open Door Policy. Right to Change Statement: PPMs are “living documents,” meaning that as businesses grow and change, a “Right to Change Statement” defines the company’s

sole discretion to make changes to rules without employee permission. Customer Service Statement: Reiterate your company’s commitment to quality and unparalleled customer service. Invite and encourage employees to serve “beyond-the-norm” while suggesting an award or recognition program (if one exists). Suggestions & Comments: Invite

employees to make suggestions, comments, and air grievances without fear of reprisal. Provide a collection box for employees to submit thoughts, complaints, and ideas. Explain what happens to submissions and what follow-up steps will be taken.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Overall, your company’s PPM should not create an expressed or implied contract for continued employment, but rather provide an easy-to-read, understandable document describing the work environment and tasks required of the employee’s position. Every company’s longterm goal should be to build a solid team of tow industry professionals, along with fostering operator and staff retention. In that, employees are empowered to exercise sound judgement in

daily actions and make decisions based on common sense. Keep in mind that employees will be held to not only the company’s levels of performance, but also the industry’s Standard of Care and that of the law enforcement community. Office harmony, competency and long-term successes are attainable by hiring, training, and employing like-minded individuals. Rules

help to establish proper attitudes and performance levels that support company growth, profits and professionalism. And, owners should be flexible in modifying company rules that grow with your business. As an example, over the past 40 years, my PPM manual has expanded to 121 pages, six major headings, and 240 sub-sections with nine signature forms.

For best results, have your attorney review your manual to ensure accuracy and legality as dictated by your state of operation. Be creative and work diligently to fine-tune your guidelines to fit your businesses situation. You’ll quickly realize that the time, effort, and expense in helping to protect your hard-earned livelihood was well spent.

DEALING WITH DIVAS

Getting back to our initial comments about “me-first” employees, recognize that no employee should have any sense of entitlement or expectation that they will be treated better than others. Management that treats individuals inconsistently or with favoritism will create discontent within the workforce, and hamper their safety and effectiveness There are a few different tactics to try. These include focusing on the content of their ideas, not their delivery style. Or figure out their strengths and assign them to areas where they’ll flourish. Also, keep them accountable, and remind them of the need for solid teamwork. If none of this works, and your diva is still saying, “It’s not my job,” they just might be right. It’s not their job anymore, and it’s time they moved on. No employee can be exempt from what’s lawful and expected of all employees.

Tow Gal Defying Society Norms to Follow a Dream By Stephanie Marchese

Sugar and spice and everything nice, that’s what little girls are made of” are probably not the words you would use to describe a tow truck driver, but this nursery rhyme is a fitting description of Kelsey Mason, a young woman who grew up working alongside her dad Chuck, Jr. in the family tow truck business in Hamilton, New Jersey, located just outside of Trenton. Kelsey’s dad has been working the business for about 25 years now and today, Kelsey and he singlehandedly run the towing operations of this family business. When asked about her grandfather, Kelsey affectionately stated, “Pop’s in his 80’s but still comes into the office to do the paperwork.” Kelsey, a self-proclaimed “Daddy’s Girl,” has been physically involved in the family-owned and operated business since she was a little girl. At four-years old, Kelsey could expertly work a winch under her father’s watchful eye and assisted in her first recovery job at the tender age of nine. Although Kelsey may be the apple of his eye, for her safety and for the safety of everyone they come upon, Chuck makes sure his daughter is well trained and very CODE: TOWMAN SAVE 10% ON ALL prepared for any situation they RADIO ORDERS! may encounter. Kelsey recounts one scenario in 2022, where the company received a call around 3:00 a.m. from the state police and were asked to respond to an accident near Morrisville, NJ. Apparently, a driver slid into the guardrail while it was raining, PeakPTT.comem Ipsum and the car needed to be extracted. However, the state police called her back just moments later and told her it now involved a fatality and as such, an investigation was required so they she should hold-off on their arrival. The state police called her back around 5:00 am, informed her that the person was not actually deceased and in fact, according to the Trooper, “He popped up and jumped out of the car!” Kelsey related. She arrived on scene soon thereafter and mentally prepared herself for VEHICLE a gruesome site. STORAGE LOG “The front of the car was clean, but when I looked toward www.towlog.com the back door, there was a ton of blood,” she exclaimed. Kelsey was thoroughly surprised that someone could lose that much blood and survive, but she was even more shocked when later that day, the driver showed up at the yard right from the hospital, complete with “about 50 stitches in his head” to retrieve his belongings from his car! “As a tow truck operator, you see a lot of bad things when you arrive on scene,” she points out. and professionally as the scene will allow. Kelsey’s passion and dedication to the towing industry are praiseworthy, yet she admits that, “People don’t take me seriously!” As one example of many, she recounts the following conversation: “I had a state trooper one time say, ‘What are you doing here?’” to which she replied, “This is my truck and I’m doing my job.” Although operating a tow truck has traditionally been almost completely handled by men, Kelsey adamantly disagrees. “It’s not just a guy’s job, it can be a female’s job and I can show these guys that I can do it just as good as them.” Kelsey, who is determined to prove just how capable she is to be a tow truck driver/operator, is also a proponent for all other women who want to tackle this industry. In addition to her towing talents, Kelsey has been attending the American Towman Exposition in Baltimore with her dad, Chuck, since she was just a baby. When we met her at the AT Exposition last year in Baltimore, she was barely 18 years old, but had the knowledge and determination of someone who had been in the industry for decades. Thinking back, Kelsey vividly recalls helping her dad prepare their tow truck for shows by polishing and cleaning them late into the night. To date, the company has collected 16 awards, including two First place and 11 Second place trophies. A brave young woman with lots of moxie, Kelsey will likely takeover the family business one day and continue to make her dad and “Pop” proud of her.

The Survivor A Tornado Turns up a Trophy-Winning ’50 Chevy By Steve Temple Photos by Payton Jones

e’ve all heard that every cloud has a silver lining, but how about a vintage tow truck as well? That was the

happy result for Jerry Jones of Jerry’s Wrecker Service in Guthrie, OK after a tornado struck in the nearby town of Kingfisher. He had been eyeing a ’50 Chevy sticking out of a barn door there for many years and tried to buy the old wrecker several times, but with no success. However, once the twister destroyed the barn, its owner, Sandusky Chevrolet, needed money to replace the structure, and ran a “for sale” ad in a local paper to liquidate the aging truck. Jerry snapped it up in 1998 and began its restoration a couple years later. The Chevy was in fairly good shape, as it hadn’t been used much

except for lifting propane tanks, which is why it had some longer, custom poles added to the Holmes 460 E split-boom setup. Jerry decided to disassemble it and sandblast the frame, as well as repair the dents in the sheetmetal. It was a father/son project, as Jerry’s son Jason, handled the body work and painting. Since Jerry already had many years of experience as a mechanic prior to founding his tow company, he easily rebuilt the 92hp, 216ci engine, along with the clutch, fourspeed transmission and brakes. “It’s a solid little truck,” he noted, with only 40K miles on the

odometer. Fortunately, finding original repair parts was not all that difficult, and the original Holmes split-booms were included with the truck, so he put those back on. He also added a windshield visor from his father’s ’53 Chevy, plus a steering-wheel lock he had left over from one of his other tow trucks. The gauges and upholstery needed refurbishing as well. In all, the restoration took about a year to complete, and brought back a few towing memories for Jerry, such as the hand-crank winch typical of early Holmes wreckers, along with the “axle cradle.”

In addition to refurbishing the gauges and upholstery, Jerry’s finishing touch was a Holmes steering wheel lock from another old tow truck.

The stylish two-tone acrylic enamel was applied by Jerry’s son, Jason.

No hydraulics here, just “Armstrong” manual winches.

The hard-to-find Holmes brass plates are still on the truck.

experience, having founded his tow company way back in 1974, after seeing all the cars that tow operators brought to his repair shop. His first tow truck was a ’73 Chevy C30, with a custom wrecker body that he welded onto the bed. Later, he replaced that unit with a hand-crank Holmes 440, and then kept adding more trucks and trailers as his business grew. Today, his towing operation runs a half-dozen wreckers, all modern, and he uses the ’50 Chevy only for parades and shows. In fact, he recently took home the top trophy in the Vintage class at American Towman’s TowXpo event in Fort

Worth. Normally, this beautiful old rig would be a fitting article for our Classic Wrecker series, but given the superb quality of the restoration, it’s worthy of a special “My Baby” feature. One of the judges, Randall Resch, has high praise for Jerry’s wrecker: “One of the best I’ve seen in many years as a pageant judge in the Vintage class. From its flawless twotone paint, red emergency bubble, chrome work lights, right down to the new bolts and painted deck, Jerry’s ‘50 Chevy is a great example of early iron wreckers that many towers of that era worked.”

The 92hp, 216ci engine runs through low gearing on the rear end, so the top speed is only about 45 mph.

The children, ages five to 14, and two adults were rushed to the local hospital. The children received minor injuries while both drivers involved had moderate injuries. Nevada Cracking Down on Street Racing

A new law in Nevada, going into effect on October 1, enables police to tow cars that are street racing or involved in reckless driving. It has reportedly gotten out of control in Las Vegas and Reno, sparking legislation in the form of Assembly Bill 408. The goal is to mitigate activities such as doing “doughnut” maneuvers at intersections, parking lot takeovers and drag racing on public streets. The state has already deemed it a misdemeanor that is punishable by a fine and mandatory community ser-

EV Saltwater Submersion Sparks Fire

A Tesla that was towed after being submerged in saltwater during Hurricane Idalia in Pinellas County, Florida suddenly caught fire, which was difficult to extinguish, and the vehicle was eventually destroyed by the flames. During previous weather events where saltwater has compromised batteries, electric vehicles have erupted into flames that require an extensive response by firefighters. "We sprayed about 200 gallons per minute at the car, and it took us about 45 minutes to extinguish," the fire department said. "If you own a hybrid or electric vehicle that has come into contact with saltwater due to recent flooding within the last 24 hours, it is crucial to relocate the vehicle away from your garage without delay,” firefighters from the area warned. “Saltwater exposure can trigger combustion in lithium-ion batteries. If possible, transfer your vehicle to higher ground." Source: yahoo.com/news

Colorado Tow Company Targeted by Attorney General

Police tow cars involved in street racing and reckless driving.

Wyatt’s Towing of Denver, Colorado is under investigation by the state Attorney General’s office due to nearly one thousand complaints.

The investigation became public after state Senator Julie Gonzales, a chief architect of a new Colorado law cracking down on predatory towing, had her vehicle towed from a parking lot, which she claimed had confusing signage. The law requires signage be clearly marked, in addition to requiring Colorado tow companies to accept partial payments. Upon picking up her car at Wyatt’s, Gonzalez maintains that she was not informed of the partial payment policy. Attorney General, Phil Weiser, said that their investigation of Wyatt’s was not triggered by Gonzales’s complaint, but was already in the works. “We’ve been working on this investigation for some time,” he said. “Our commitment is to be as comprehensive, thorough, and fair as possible. Because of the senator’s public story, because now she’s actually a potential victim, we want it to be clear that this is something we are looking at.” Jason Dunn, the former U.S. Attor-

ney for Colorado representing Wyatt’s, said the company has been cooperating with the Attorney General’s investigation fully and has provided all the information that the AG’s investigators have asked for. News Flash "Last Ride” Procession for Pittsburgh Towman

Dozens of tow truck companies formed a procession on I-376 in Pittsburgh to honor Husam Shuibat, who was struck and killed. Shuibat, who worked for Advantage Towing, was sideswiped after loading up and securing a vehicle on his tow truck. Charges against a suspected drunk driver are pending after he fled the scene. Police were able to track down the 23-year-old driver, Hunter Crown, with the help of witnesses, who gave a detailed description of the car and plate number. Crown was later arrested for suspicion of DUI. Members of the tow truck community called this procession “the last ride,” with more than 50 companies involved in honoring Shuibat. The driver sent a picture of the rotator to the owner of Hawks, who then remembered seeing the video on TikTok. The owner of Hawks personally went out to identify the truck but discovered that it was no longer sitting in the lot, but at another parking facility down the road, way in the back, squished between two semi-tractor trailers. “He called the police and then called us,” said Daly. “I’m just so happy and thankful to get it back.” Surveillance cameras at the private parking lot may help turn up the suspects behind this criminal activity.

The woman’s brother was helping her with the move when Jones showed up and was shot dead. Police tracked the alleged shooter, Dwayne Davis, 27, using a GPS device on the Jeep.
