Our Ability to Soar by Steve Calitri

H

ow does the everyday spirit of a Towman at work translate into the spirit of an Exposition? The answer to that question will help one appreciate the events of the towing industry’s “Main Event,” the American Towman Exposition. The answer gives a clue to what each and every Towman should understand about his work, his business and his or her character. In the pages of the Exposition attendee brochure (pages 21-44), you’ll come across imagery in Art Deco style that portrays the heroic aspect of the towing professional. Images of a Towman soaring toward the sun, a Towman standing in salute over a police siren and a lady bequeathing a medal (much like a castle queen performing this act in medieval times). One may understandably ask, “Is this fantasy?” But the average towing professional who reflects on these images knows that they reflect a fiery truth about his trade and his character. Let’s cut to the most important question about our industry that the theme of this year’s Exposition raises: With all the challenges facing the towing professional every day, is it by any stretch of the imagination fair to proclaim, “The Industry Soars”? My reply is simple: How else could this industry exist if indeed it is not always rising above all that makes it difficult? The average towing business struggles to be profitable. But we see in the industry’s efforts, as reflected in the seminars of the American Towman Academy, developments helping to make the towing operation more efficient at less cost. The seminars on GPS and smart phones are just two examples.

6 • July 2011 - TOWMAN.COM

The towing industry, operating under the slimmest of profit margins, is always on the lookout for new revenue sources. The Academy offers a whole track of seminars on such opportunities, from accident cleanup to damaged vehicle documentation. Indeed, 30 seminars touch on all the critical business segments—police, commercial and motor club—offering ways and means to greater success in each area. Don’t let that Towman soaring toward the sun fool you. He’s not doing it alone. Just like our astronauts don’t go to the moon alone. An entire team of professionals backed by the world’s biggest government launches them into space. So it is with our flying Towman. On the show floor of the American Towman Exposition you’ll find our entire industry—all the products and services that the tow boss needs to succeed and the teams of professionals behind them— inside the Baltimore Convention Center. Greater than all that, 10,000 towing professionals are there looking for ways to rise above the clouds. They create the indefatigable spirit that pervades the American Towman Exposition. There are many events leading up to the Saturday Grand Opening, which features the traditional Show of Flashing Lights, the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, and the legendary herd of tow business owners thundering upon the world’s greatest spectacle of tow trucks and booms rising toward the heavens. Over four days, the Exposition creates an exhilarating rhythm of human activity right up to the finale … the American Towman Triumph on Sunday, when all towmen walking into the Exposition are treated like conquering generals entering ancient Rome. Yes, the industry soars.

Okla. Bill Moves Tower Oversight Oklahoma legislation, signed into law in late May, will help rural wrecker services stay in business, according to state Rep. Dennis Johnson. House Bill 1743 transfers the regulation of nonconsensual (accident scene) wrecker tow fees from the Department of Public Safety to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. Because of political concerns, Johnson said the Legislature often failed to approve wrecker rates that actually covered the cost of service. “The Corporation Commission oversees the rate structures for virtually all others, so it only made sense to put the wreckers under the commission again,” said Johnson. “They are better equipped and have more experience to set rates in a fair and efficient manner. “We were losing wreckers in the rural areas because they were not able to stay in business with the rates that were being paid,” Johnson said. “This legislation will help save rural wreckers.” Source: www.tulsabeacon.com.

No Jail Time for Rampage A Grand Rapids, Mich., woman who snagged a baseball bat off the wall at a tow shop and smashed electronics, windows and other items in an angry fit over a $225 towing bill is likely to escape jail time. The woman pleaded no contest regarding the February assault after her 1999 Grand Am was towed from the scene of a 60-car pileup. The county prosecutor's office recommended she serve no jail time if she completes an anger management class and a probation term. Source: www.mlive.com.

Pink Truck for Breast Cancer Awareness At Bear Creek CSI Inc., in Houston, Texas, driver, Robert "Wreckerbob" Zinna, last year suggested to owner, George Perdue, that they finish one of the wreckers in a pink color scheme to raise awareness for breast cancer. As it turns out, timing is everything. Within days, Perdue approved the move, as he had just learned his daughter Christine was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, Zinna said. Today, though, Christine is a survivor and both she and the pink wrecker are doing what they can to raise awareness. For every tow with the pink truck, a portion of the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. You will also see the truck at various area fundraisers, like the recent Avon and Sugarland relay walks.

And when the pink wrecker arrives at an accident scene, "it makes people smile and helps break the ice," Zinna said. "It's breaking stereotypes, too. When a pink truck shows up, women are less apprehensive about the driver." The reflective graphics for this truck were done by Bonehead Graphics in Houston. More themed trucks are in the planning stages, including for military and law enforcement causes. Wreckerbob challenges you to see what visibility you can lend to local community causes as well.

USAC-MD Funds

TRAA Test Discounts The United States Auto ClubMotoring Division gave $10,000 to TRAA for its education endeavors, specifically to support the TRAA online certification testing project. “Testing online is a fairly new process for certification,” said Harriet Cooley, TRAA Executive Director. “We are going nationwide with the hope that we can reach many more drivers and get them up to speed with safety and professional towing procedures.” USAC is dedicating $8,000 to USAC-MD Level 1 drivers seeking to take the online testing; $40 for each application will be paid for the USAC-MD applicants and non USAC-MD applicants will receive a $20 discount.

Call the TRAA office at 800-7280136 or log onto www.towserver.net for more information. “We are extremely grateful to USAC-MD for this generous contribution,” said Alan Gregg, TRAA President. “We know that these monies will be a huge encouragement to USAC-MD tow truck operators looking to increase their safety education through certification.”

... USAC-MD kicks in support for certification testing ... Chicago Suburb Eases Seizure Law Tow policy revisions in Waukegan, Ill., mean police now can allow motorists to either drive their vehicle from the scene or find a licensed driver to take charge of the car where previously seizure was required. Under the amended measure, the only instance in which a vehicle must be seized and towed from the scene of a traffic stop is when the driver fails to possess both a valid license and insurance. “That is the only time it is a mandatory tow, regardless of who’s there with a license or not,” said a Waukegan police sergeant. The revision comes some eight years after a woman filed a successful federal lawsuit against the city, stating that her car, pulled over while her son was driving it on an expired license, was towed even after she arrived at the scene with her license and proof of insurance. Guilty Plea in Baltimore Scandal The Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office said a Baltimore police officer pleaded guilty in early June regarding the kickbacks scandal. More than a dozen officers have been charged in the case; he is the first to plead guilty. In a statement, prosecutors said the officer received approximately $1,000 in total from a repair shop owner. The officer faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine or twice the amount of gain or loss derived from the offense. The shop owner allegedly paid police to arrange for the repair shop, rather than a city-authorized company, to tow vehicles from accident scenes and make repairs. The repair shop is not an authorized tow company with the city; the shop owner instructed officers to tell accident victims that the shop would pay deductibles to have the car towed to the shop. NSD Raises Money for Survivor Fund

In 2010, Nation Safe Drivers donated a customized 1947 Dodge wrecker with a Chevy 454-cid V-8 to the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum to be used for a fundraiser for the Survivor Fund. At the Florida Tow Show in Orlando, Fla., the truck was used to raise an additional $4,500 for the Fund, and has now moved on to its new owners at ARC Towing Service. The truck has not been restored, but the new owners plan to do significant work to it and bring it back to the Florida Tow Show in 2012. “We are proud to support the Survivor Fund and the towing museum,” said John Moore, Director of Roadside Operations for NSD. “Our industry loses dozens of men and women in the line of service every year and in this small way we can help the efforts of the Survivor Fund to support the families left behind.”

Indianapolis Mulls New Towing Rules The Indianapolis CityCounty Council is weighing an ordinance that would impose a number of new rules on towing in the city, including: City-approved parking signs would be required. Distances of towing would be limited. Towing fees would be capped at $150 and storage fees at $30 a day. Cash and credit cards would have to be honored.

Motorists could reclaim their cars 24/7. Tow businesses who violate the rules would have their licenses suspended or revoked. The proposal is backed by the mayor and the council president. Source: www.indystar.com.

Business Solutions to Refueling Options

By Randall C. Resch

I

t doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that continued and escalating unrest in the Middle East and Japan’s disasters are causing extreme hikes in fuel pricing. If you’ve paid attention to current events, those events (and others) are causing prices to jump off the proverbial gas station sign. News anchors begrudgingly make it clear that the retail cost of gas and fuel will likely climb towards $6 per gallon before summer ’s end, regardless if things in the Middle East settle down. Tow truck companies, large and small, find they’re confronted with varying fuel-related issues including fuel theft, vehicle efficiency, driver delay at the pumps, and timely and accurate accounting of products purchased. With ever-increasing costs at the pumps today, business owners are trying to find creative ways to keep their fuel costs as low as possible. What are your company’s best options for refueling trucks while seeking a lower per-gallon cost? Savvy business owners can consider a few ways of refueling which are most advantageous to their company’s day-today operations: •On-site refueling of your trucks “in place” at your facility. •Maintain an on-site tank at your facility; you pump. •Drivers fill up at a commercial refueling center.

10 • July 2011 - TOWMAN.COM

In-Place Refueling There are several advantages to inplace refueling, where semi-tankers on a regular route come to you and take care of refueling each tow truck. Of course, one main downside is that the trucks have to be there at the prescribed time to receive fuel.

Increasing each truck’s fuel storage capacity

which many businesses reckon accounts for between 10 percent and 20 percent of fuel costs.”

Pros: •Fuel is delivered, no need for a fuel storage tank on the premises. Convenient to large fleets as fuel delivery comes to you. •Fuel delivery drivers are trained in fuel delivery and dispensing. •Company employees do not handle. •Accurate accounting. •Billing cycles arranged per contract. •Theft potential eliminated.

has the advantage Cons: of keeping your trucks in the field longer. “A reliable fuel management system can save you up to 20 percent on your fuel costs. When combined with on-site delivery, you make productivity gains of at least 20 minutes per day, per vehicle,” said Jack Lee, president/CEO of 4Refuel, a fuel logistics company. “When your vehicles are refueled in place, you also reduce the cost of labor, overhead, insurance, maintenance and fuel consumption. “Where product management and security is a company’s concern, the biggest hidden savings is avoiding theft. On-site refueling eliminates theft

•Tow trucks must be on-site for fueling by arriving tanker. •May require staged tow trucks to leave service area to return for fuel; takes trucks out of service. •Delivery tanker requires easy access to trucks.

Pumping Yourself Self-contained mini pump stations are designed to store upwards of 2,000 gallons to 10,000 gallons. Pre-engineered above- and below-ground tank systems are costly, yet may fit your company’s fueling needs. These “mini stations” are oftentimes more difficult to place depending on zoning and EPA regulations. Experts calculate that per-

Fuel dispensing companies may not have foolproof waterdetection methods, which could mean water in the fuel may not be discovered until it has gone through the vehicle fuel tank and into the engine. To find water in a fuel tank via engine failure is not wise. Dieselcraft Fluid Engineering has developed a line of sensors to

detect water at the tank bottom before if gets dispensed or for installation in water separators to alarm the user of water presence. The Model FWS-HH portable water detector is a hand-held unit; turn it on, dip it and if water is at the tank bottom the alarm sounds.

Pros: •Convenient to larger fleets. •Fuel availability is 24/7. •Drivers refuel and return to service; trucks are fueled for the oncoming shift. •Cost advantages may be seen in purchasing bulk loads. •On-site fuel storage unit may make property more attractive upon sale of the business for other fleet-oriented businesses.

Cons: •Requires dedicated location for fuel tank placement. •Requires easy delivery access by commercial tanker. •Up-front costs to initial setup and to purchase bulk loads. •Security of fuel if not carefully monitored. •Possibility of fuel spill by employee. •Tanks subject to fuel contamination. •Tank could run out if not properly monitored.

Commercial Fueling Network The most common type of fuel purchasing (beyond using the local gas station) is known as “discount wholesale fuel” or “Commercial Fueling Network.” These monster fueling stations cater to trucking companies and fleet businesses. Whether your company is a one-truck operation or you run a multi-vehicle fleet, these stations offer a number of benefits. Perhaps the best advantage of purchasing at a commercial fuel location relates to accounting. Depending on the type of bulk purchase account available, accounting can be set up for weekly, bi-weekly or monthly billing. Cardlock systems are setup in various ways. Most conveniently, drivers/employees are provided a product-only-type credit card where they swipe the card and/or enter their series of security-related passwords. No cash is needed by drivers. A fuel account can be set up where no other fuel products can be purchased. If you set up your fleet account account this way it ensures drivers/

employees can’t purchase fuel for their personal vehicles nor can they fill fuel cans unless the account is set up that way. Although cardlock refueling is best suited to most companies, the overall costs of fuel are about the same as paying at the pump, unless fuel use is purchased in huge quantities.

Pros: •Easy application and set-up. •Availability is generally 24/7. •Fuel accounts/receipts are managed by the station’s computer. •Drivers/employees get secure fuel cards with pin number. •Your company controls issuance of fuel cards. •Drivers/employees need not carry cash to make fuel transactions. •Transactions are accurately recorded. •Monthly reports calculate gallons per truck, total gallons, truck’s mileage, number of times cards are used, plus, they can calculate cost per

Moving Forward Whether you buy fuel through one of theses processes or simply by sending drivers to the local pumps as needed, have you considered outfitting your tow trucks with an additional onboard fuel tank? Increasing each truck’s fuel storage capacity has the advantage of keeping your trucks in the field longer. For the future, 4Refuel’s Jack Lee advocates that, “a huge part of the rise and fall in world oil prices is market forces. There’s oil in everything. And by that, I mean there’s very little in our lives that does not require oil to produce it, bring it to market, take it home or put it on the table.” Such sentiment doesn’t indicate we’ll see future relief in general fuel prices making commercial refueling a smart choice.

Want to keep up? Todd Althouse, Beacon Software, Friday 9 a.m.

Track 3: Fleet Strategy and Utilization Alternative Fuels Ever-increasing fuel costs are prompting many tow operators to transition their fleet to Natural Gas Vehicles, which deliver superior performance, quieter operation and 30 percent to 50 percent lower fuel costs. Other alternative fuels and trends are discussed as well as available trucks, economics and steps to successful transition. Stephen Yborra, NGV America, Friday 10 a.m.

Fleet Strategy & Utilization, Wreckers to Lowboys Are your tow trucks on the road or sitting in a lot? Do you know when you should buy a new unit and are you sure which type of unit you should add to your fleet: wrecker, carrier, service truck or lowboy? There are many variables. Three veteran fleet owners help you sort it all out. John Borowski, Bill Johnson, Jeremy Procon, Sunday 9 a.m.

Thinking Outside the Box Building your commercial base is as simple as looking right under your nose. Dual-Tech sponsors the American Wrecker Pageant.

The American Wrecker Pageant at AT Expo is the world’s largest wrecker pageant, a truck show unto itself with its very own hall inside the Baltimore Convention Center. More than 60 contestants show off the most incredible wreckers with the most amazing hand-painted graphics and most creative wraps to custom hood ornaments, deckcontrol levers and more. The American Wrecker Pageant has broken towing’s word of mouth barrier (competitive towers just don’t talk much amongst themselves) and wrecker owners have come from as far as the Pacific Ocean to compete with their “babies,” hoping to bring back one of the pageant’s legendary Silver Trophies. Nov. 17-20, 2011 Whether you enter a truck in the pageant or not, you’ll marvel at the creative presentations. You may

A vote that may win you one of the Exposition’s grand prizes! The 2011 American Wrecker Pageant is proudly sponsored by Dual-Tech, an independent manufacturer of carriers and wreckers.

Celebrate! The American Towman Triumph is about our achievements, our success, our indefatigable spirit. In ancient Rome, conquering generals and their armies were awarded with a “Triumph” as they marched victoriously into the great city. They were feted with cheering crowds, games and feasts. On Sunday, November 20, AT celebrates all that’s great about our industry, and the individual towing companies that continue to endure. Time to take stock of how you have succeeded where others have fallen by the wayside. Your hard work and intelligence, sacrifice and tenacity. Your dedication to those you serve. If these words ring true, then you are invited to join in American Towman’s Triumph.

Participate in the Triumph in the ways you wish. You may join the March of Towmen into the exhibit hall at 11 a.m. , and if you choose, with the Triumph’s Ceremonial Scarf (see Souvenirs page). You will be pampered by masseuses and masseurs on the show floor as you explore the hall and the 200 exhibitors and more than 700 booths. You may join in American Towman’s Chocolate Decadence on the show floor at 3 p.m. or be one of hundreds of prize winners among those attendees in the hall on Sunday afternoon. If the Triumph sounds a little bit hokey, you may want to sleep off that recovery you did last night, and start smelling the roses. Just keep your head up high as you enter the 23rd American Towman Exposition.

ate on a Sunday afternoon, Sabil & Sons of White River Junction, Vt., received a call from the Bridgewater Police Department requesting recovery service for a full-size passenger coach that had gone off the road and rolled onto its side. The bus was leaving a youth camp on a narrow road with no shoulder and the front tire went over the side just enough that even at the low speed it dragged the vehicle over. Weather did not appear to be a factor. With their heavy-duty workhorse, a T800 Kenworth with Vulcan V-50 unavailable, Sabil & Sons dispatched

their T800 with NRC 40-ton sliding rotator, R600 Mack with Challenger 6800 35-ton three-stage boom and a service truck. Upon arrival, we found the coach resting on its right side down a small incline, about 5 feet below the surface of the road. All passengers had exited through the roof hatches relatively injury free. As we evaluated the accident scene, we encountered utility lines running very close to the projected recovery exit. Another concern was that holding the coach upright and winching it forward wouldn’t work because of the sharp drop-off that would have the bus bottoming out during the movement forward. After securing the scene, the four workers on scene worked as a team and approached the recovery as a simple controlled upright, and controlled lift back onto the pavement. With the capacity and versatility of the NRC 40-ton sliding rotator, we decided to upright and lift the rear (engine end) of the coach and swing it to a safe location, while the Challenger, placed correctly, could easily handle the front of the coach. Working simultaneously, we uprighted and gingerly swung the suspended coach onto the roadway, setting it on the painted centerline of the road with no additional damage. From there, the bus was towed to our yard using our T800 Kenworth tandem with Jerr-Dan 25-ton twin-line body. From arrival on the scene to final cleanup the job took approximately two hours for the Sabil & Sons crew.

Selecting the Right

PTO By Mikel E. Janitz

S Get the Correct Mobile Power Product for Your Needs.

52 • July 2011 - TOWMAN.COM

electing the right power take-off unit is the first step in creating a robust application solution. A power take-off is a gearbox attached to the transmission that transfers power from the engine to a hydraulic pump or auxiliary component. There are a few particulars you need to know and apply to make the most of your PTO investment. First, what is the vehicle you are upfitting? What kinds of work will you need to perform and how often is the job conducted? Selecting the right power takeoff requires meeting the speed, torque and horsepower requirements of the application. Will the PTO fit the vehicle without frame or exhaust modifications? Will the PTO have to electrically interface with the chassis? There are a few pitfalls you need to avoid to ensure you get the most out of your mobile power investment. Your tow truck was a big investment. You weighed many factors in choosing the vehicle: i.e. gas

vs. diesel, automatic vs. manual transmission, chassis make and more. You need to select a PTO that works best for the vehicle. One basic consideration when selecting a PTO is whether the vehicle is gas or diesel. This can be a big deal —of high importance are the engine “signature” and its effect on the PTO’s noise and torsional fluctuations. Gas engines typically run smoother and can provide for a quieter operation. Diesels usually provide more low-speed torque capability.

Transmission Whether you choose an automatic or manual, it is important in PTO selection to determine the transmission make and model number as well as which PTO aperture is to be used. Most often, manual transmission PTOs use a “dog clutch” set up. This is where the drive gear freely rotates until a ring gear manually mates the transmission rotation to the PTO gear set. This is done by either depressing the vehicle clutch and manually pulling the PTO control knob to engage the gears or by electric shift where a solenoid switch engages the PTO gears. Automatic transmissions typically incorporate clutch shift (hot shift) PTOs. Dog shift can be used on an automatic; however, a hot shift is more advantageous to use to prevent wear or damage to the transmission when engaging the PTO. Hot shifts allow for PTO gear engagement while the transmission gear is rotating. This makes it possible to engage and disengage the PTO output shaft without bringing the vehicle to a complete stop, which is required with a manual transmission. Gears in clutch shift PTOs typically show less wear over time.

Discover t he most pro d uct ive tow ing dispatch system. Ever. See all your talls and trucks. Touch a vehicle icon, touch a truck icon and you're donet the job is dispatched, the driver productive. Discover Tracker Touch.

Does It Fit? While the physical size of the PTO is not the primary concern when making the selection, one does have to pay attention to fit. Mounting space is at a premium and it is important that the PTO and hydraulic pump (if so equipped) fit within the available envelope space. The final location of the auxiliary equipment can be a driving factor when selecting a PTO. Starting with a solid understanding of the vehicle, you can begin planning for the work it will perform. Is it a single function or are there multiple tasks to consider? Knowing the type of work is important, as this defines the duty cycle. PTO duty cycles are classified as intermittent or continuous. If the PTO is to run for more than 5 minutes in a 15minute period, it is continuous duty. Intermittent duty cycles are those that last for less than 5 minutes at a time. The torque and horsepower ratings of PTOs are reduced for continuousduty applications.

Torque Is Limiting Selecting a PTO is all about finding a way to get the required work done. Work in this example is force times distance. Speed is rotations per minute and power is the rate of doing work, horsepower. When selecting a PTO for a particular task, it is important to consider the application. What will the PTO be driving? How fast will it need to spin? What are the torque requirements? These questions are functions of speed, torque and power.

Road America has partnered with AT&T to launch a GPS technology solution for pinpointing breakdown locations to improve the speed, accuracy and efficiency of locating the customer’s disabled vehicle. The technology uses the same telecommunications device they are using to contact the Road America 24-hour Response Centers. With this enhancement, Road America is able to pinpoint the customer’s precise coordinates—even if the customer doesn’t know where they are. With the new Road America LocateMe technology, at least two minutes can be trimmed from the average call length—the time it takes to identify the customer, ascertain the location of their vehicle and confirm the dispatch service. For Road America and its client companies, it can mean reduced processing costs and increased customer satisfaction. After six months of testing, LocateMe is consistently achieving a 98 percent success rate in pinpointing locations. Visit www.road-america.com for info.

PTO continued from page 53 PTO speed is often stated in terms of a percentage of engine speed. PTO horsepower is directly proportional to the output shaft RPM. This means that the faster it turns, the more horsepower is produced. However, it is also important to realize a PTO’s torque rating is constant no matter how fast it is turning. Torque is the limiting factor. If loads are too large, the PTO can be damaged. The direction of rotation can also be an important consideration. PTOs rotate either the same as the engine crankshaft, CRNK rotation, or opposite the crankshaft, OPP. A good rule of thumb is that PTOs mounted on automatic transmissions provide a CRNK rotation, and those on manuals give an OPP rotation. If in doubt, use the manufacturer’s recommendations (check with rep or their website) to select the PTO. Correctly installing the PTO is key to durability and performance. When selecting a PTO it is important to know the vehicle and the chassis. It is not recommended to make modifications to vehicle components without first consulting the manufacturer. This could void warranty and create possible safety concerns. Speak to application engineers to resolve any questions and help you select the right PTO and accessories for the job.
