MAYOR’S GREETING I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the first edition of Douglasville Impact. This is yet another way that we, your City government, ensure that we are communicating with our residents and friends as much, and in as many ways as possible. I also want to thank Chapel Hill News and Views for their ongoing partnership. Having a publication like theirs is vital in promoting local people, events, and businesses. This newsletter is meant to inform readers about upcoming events and programming that will be happening throughout the City of Douglasville. For this issue, our focus is “Summer Days in the City” where we will provide information about what families can do in our great City during the summer months. I know, for my family at least, it is important to keep kids and families engaged in activities when school is out. Otherwise, it can make for a very long summer! I personally invite you to all the exciting City events that will be happening this summer. They are filled with food, fun, learning, family, and community. What more could you ask for? Rochelle Robinson Mayor

What to do with a

Little Extra Leisure Time

It’s always a great day to visit one of our many City parks. Many of the parks offer a playground for the young to enjoy! Fowler Field’s playground provides a space for siblings to enjoy during soccer games, as well as anytime the park is open. Douglasville City Parks have many miles to enjoy one step at a time! Enjoy a stroll around the lake at Hunter Park or follow the markers on the scenic walking-running route to move your feet over the designated path.

Digital Media Camp Looking for a fun, interesting, and unique opportunity for your child during the Summer? Well, look no further. The Douglasville Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Digital Media Camp at the Ike Owings Community Center, located in Hunter Park.

Food Truck M O N D A Y S

Main Street Douglasville is proud to host “Food Truck Mondays” for the third consecutive year. This event has grown exponentially! It started with just three food trucks and has grown to now providing residents a selection from 10 food trucks and food vendors at each event. This community favorite event began because several of the restaurants in Downtown Douglasville are closed on Mondays, so the City wanted to be purposeful and give people in the area more food options during lunch and dinner time on on that day. As the series grows year after year, a more diverse mixture of food trucks participate in the event. We try to ensure that there are a variety of food genres represented and that there is something for everyone to enjoy each Monday. Food Truck Mondays is a rain or shine event. We strive to have 10 food trucks every week, so come out and enjoy it with us!

The Digital Media Camp is designed to expose children to the world of mass media and communication. The participants of the program are afforded the opportunity learn Mass Media basics which include how to operate a camera, how to identify camera accessories and their use, and how to develop a story that will make a great advertising video. Participants also learn how to create commercials, edit videos, and create flyers, while gaining an understanding of the importance of reach, target audience, and demographics. Campers will visit local TV stations and take advantage of a behind the scenes look at the television broadcasting. Location: Hunter Park Dates: Session One - June 24th – June 28th Session Two – July 15th – July 19th Time: 9AM-12PM Cost: $50 per session Ages: 10 – 14 years old

FROM THE CITY MANAGER’S DESK In this first edition of the Douglasville Impact, we have highlighted many of the programs happening throughout our Parks system, so I think it is important to include an update on where the City is in the Parks Redesign Plan process. Back in November of 2018, the City Council voted unanimously to select Goodwyn, Mills, and Cawood, Inc. (GMC) to handle the entire scope of the redesign projects of Jessie Davis Park, Mill Village Park, and Willing Workers Park. GMC got right to work analyzing the land on which each of those parks sites. Conducting topographic surveys and environmental assessments of each park is a crucial aspect for GMC to understand the environment in which they will be working for each project. The next step was to conduct community input meetings to gain an understanding of what the community would like to see in each park. GMC held three such meetings throughout the community, with the final meeting held at the Hawthorne Center at Jessie Davis Park on March 5th. Now that they have received all the input needed, they are working hard to construct a plan that makes sense and incorporates the wants and needs expressed by our community. They will be presenting their final plans to the Mayor and Council at an upcoming council meeting. Once their plans have been approved, they will quickly get to work. You’ll be able to see their progress on the parks redesign throughout the summer months and probably into the early autumn as well. The City will ensure that we are keeping the Douglasville Community up-to-date on what is happening related to the parks redesign. Be sure to keep an eye out for newsflashes on our website and information on the City, and Douglasville Parks and Rec Facebook pages. Finally, I would like to close by thanking everyone who came and offered input on not only the parks redesign project, but on all the projects we have been working on the past 24 months. There have been many hours put into these projects by staff and the quality of your involvement has made these processes easier. Enjoy our new publication! Marcia Hampton City Manager

New Look Around Town

Have you noticed the colorful new look for The City of Douglasville around town?

City vehicles have been rebranded. New business cards have been ordered. Even the Church Street and Price Avenue intersection displays our new logo. New signs marking official City government buildings will soon be in place, and it is all part of the new branding effort for the City of Douglasville. The City’s new logo folds four colorful tiles together representing the diversity of our community. These tiles serve as a backdrop for the signature D, standing for Douglasville. The bold new logo gives way and embraces the progressive dreams and aspirations your City government has for the future of our great city and community. So take a look around town to discover our new image and know your City government is working to make an Impact that Matters. 6

Professionally designed by Keith Johnson in 2014, Hunter Park’s disc golf course has been described as “a technical course that serves as a great challenge among players.” The course winds through the Hunter Park campus offering an 18 hole course that measures 5010 feet in length and is a Par 55. The course is a mix of open and lightly wooded holes. Several holes are designed to be more challenging. Moderate elevation comes into play on many holes. The course is on the shorter side with several holes over 300 feet and also includes a long 485 foot par 4 tunnel shot. Make sure to stop by the Ike Owing Community Center to get your official scorecard

Coffee Shop Interviews are designed to give that personal inside story in a conversational style. So grab yourself a cup of coffee and imagine yourself sitting down with our guest and asking these questions. This edition’s interview is with Councilman Sam Davis about Wednesday Wind Down 2019.

How many years is this for Wednesday Wind Down? Councilman Davis: This year is the big year with 10 consecutive years of Wednesday Wind Down in the City of Douglasville! This year we have an 11 week series beginning June 5th. We are excited to be celebrating 10 years!

How did Wednesday Wind Down get started? Councilman Davis: This was one of my first initiatives coming on board as a Councilman. In 2009, former and late Councilman John Schildroth along with former Mayor Thompson both knew of my entertainment background and they encouraged me to help bring quality performances to Downtown. As we looked to fill a genre need in our community, Jazz became the focus. So from there a smooth Jazz series was started.

Tell us what to expect at each event? Councilman Davis: Excitement!!! It’s supposed to be a fun and family friendly evening outdoors with great music. There may be a little dancing, a little crowd singing along to some familiar tunes and a whole lot of relaxing and unwinding! Bring your lawn chairs and maybe a basket of finger foods. Join up with some friends and spend an evening enjoying new bands each week. This year we will be back on the newly renovated O’Neal Plaza Downtown, back where it all started.

The Wednesday Wind Down events are free and open to the public. They are provided as a service the City offers to the community. Each show opens with a local artist. All performers abide by the Code of Ethics and have a quality performing act to keep the crowd happy and entertained. The Wednesday Wind Down series runs each Wednesday June 5th – August 14th 2019! 7
