Fun for the Whole Family! This great highlight of South Coast events is promising to be as exciting as ever as the old village of Central Tilba prepares to expand its population from 100 to 10,000 for one great day of fun. April Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - where else in the world would you want to be? April is a busy month with school holidays and Easter, and there are heaps of festivals and events to keep you entertained. Youth Week is on in April, and Spiral Gallery is hosting an exhibition of work by local young people titled Live It Now. Details of the exhibition are on page 33. In the Eurobodalla, Aamplify Battle-ofthe-bands is the feature event of Youth Week. With 6 finalists vying for the top spot, a local DJ and fireworks, Aamplify is a must for anyone under 25 (and maybe even those a bit older!) There are more details about Aamplify on page 34. Music of a completely different type is being performed at the Wolumla Hall on Sunday April 3rd when the Sapphire Coast Music Society presents Co-Opera performing The Marriage of Figaro. This classic opera, written by Mozart, is performed by Co-Opera's

Contents best opera singers beautifully dressed in period costumes, performing amongst the audience to the delight of everyone, from seasoned fans to newcomers to opera. George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay.

The historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay in the heyday of the whaling industry. The Seahorse Inn, also built in 1843, has been beautifully restored to its former glory, and the ruins of Boyd’s church can still be seen. You can experience some of Eden's history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Eden Killer Whale Museum celebrates its 80th anniversary On 17 September 1930, while on his daily walk, Allie Greig discovered the body of the killer whale known as Tom. This single event was the impetus behind establishing a museum in Eden a place to commemorate the intriguing natural story of the equal working relationship between the whalers and killer whales of Twofold Bay. The museum was eventually completed in 1938 with Tom's skeleton being

installed early in 1939. This year the Eden Killer Whale Museum is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a full programme of events planned, including the new exhibition, Collectoscope. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late 19th century. However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.

Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. One of these buildings is the former home of Syms Covington, assistant to the great naturalist, Charles Darwin, on the second voyage of The Beagle in the 1830s. He became postmaster of Pambula in 1854, but remained in contact with the renowned scientist, sending a box of Twofold Bay barnacles to help in Darwin’s research. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs.

Pambula Beach has with an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth. There are also walking tracks and viewing platforms.

At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too.

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June. Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

Co-Opera brings 'The Marriage Of Figaro' to Wolumla The Sapphire Coast Music Society is presenting Co-Opera's sparkling production of Mozart’s classic comedy 'The Marriage of Figaro" at Wolumla Hall at 6pm on Sunday 3rd April. Directed by the renowned Tessa Bremner, 'The Marriage of Figaro' features an instrumental ensemble sharing theatrical and musical honours with Co-Opera’s finest singers all beautifully dressed in period wardrobe with a difference – faintly comic, yet utterly respectful to its performance tradition. The Marriage of Figaro was Mozart’s first big success in the Italian ‘Opera Buffa’ style. Composed in 1785-6 for

the Viennese court of Joseph II, its theme of questioning aristocratic privilege meant that considerable court diplomacy had to be exercised before

permission to perform the work was obtained. Indeed it was the spread of this sentiment three years later which

led to the French Revolution and the execution of Louis XVI! The work quickly spread in popularity overseas and has remained a firm favourite in the repertoire throughout the intervening 200 years. Co-Opera’s performance, under the musical direction of Brian Chatterton, gives newcomers an opportunity to experience the delights of the drama and the music at close quarters. Singers perform amongst the audience and the entire auditorium can become the stage for this presentation of

Fishing Report & Tide Chart - April What a time to wet a line along the South Coast of NSW! April is prime time for most fish species with something available for every angler. Beaches: With the increased rainfall we had last month the beaches have benefited significantly. The fresh water pushing out of the local estuaries onto the beaches has seen salmon, tailor, mulloway, bream, whiting and mullet all have a chew at times. Fishing the top of the tide and first 2 hours of the run-out tide is best, with pilchards, bluebait, squid, beach worms and pipi being the most productive baits. Most beaches have been fishing well, but the better ones have been Gillard’s, North Tura, Tilba, Narooma main, Brou, Blackfellow’s and Congo. Rocks: Salmon have been prolific right along the coast with most headlands producing the goods. We have had pockets of colder water close in this season, and the salmon respond well to these conditions. Smaller chromed lures and whole pilchards rigged on ganged hooks should do the trick. Expect the odd smaller kingfish and bonito when targeting the salmon also. Blackfish and drummer will be available in the wash zones. Best baits are cabbage, cunjevoi, abgut and bread pieces especially for drummer. Better ledges to try include Green Cape, Tura Head, Tathra Head, Mystery Bay and the Golf course rocks at Narooma.

Estuaries: Have been fishing extremely well for flathead, bream, whiting, mulloway and tailor. All estuaries along the coast are firing with the better ones being Merimbula, Bega River, Tuross and Bateman’s Bay. Using both soft plastics and fresh bait like striped tuna, prawns and bass yabbies should see a fish or two in the bag. Concentrate your efforts in the lower sections of the estuaries towards the entrances for best results. Offshore: Where do you start? Marlins have been going great guns with some boaties having 5-6 shots per day. Trolling skirted lures and switch-baiting have been the best methods to target them. The beakies have been widespread all the way from Batemans Bay to Eden. The shelf has been the place to fish with a few smaller black marlin coming from the 40-fathom line especially off Merimbula. Kingfish have been on the chew at Montague Island and Mowarry Point with most inshore reefs holding good concentrations of snapper, morwong and flathead. Tight lines til next month. Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has plenty of great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants. Tathra is a great base from which

you can explore the Mimosa Rocks National Park, which follows the coast up towards Bermagui. Beaches include Nelsons, Moon Bay, and Bithry Inlet, with camping available at Gillards and Middle Beach.

Monthly Garden Advice Seaside Survivors With very little effort seaside gardens can be made easy care, low maintenance sources of pleasure throughout the year, providing flowers to pick for the home as well as giving protection from the prevailing winds we experience throughout the year. Of special interest in developing seaside gardens are plants that have silver or grey foliage. The hairy covering of the leaves protects their surface from the salt in the air, as well as serving to reflect light and keep a humid layer close to the surface. This helps keep the plant cool by insulating the tissues from excessive

heat and reducing water loss to the atmosphere. Grey or silver-leafed plants also stand out in the moonlight to add another dimension to your garden, and when planted next to white flowering plants, the effect will be even more dramatic. Many grey and silver-leafed plants are native to the Mediterranean where they can be seen growing wild in huge swathes, clinging to rocky hillsides with very little summer rainfall. Consider planting in large groups of one species for a more definite statement. Many seaside gardens can become a bit

like the proverbial â&#x20AC;&#x153;dogs breakfastâ&#x20AC;? with small plantings of many different plants giving the effect of poor planning. Five or six varieties planted in large, bold clumps and repeated every so often will look much more effective. There are many exotic plants that fit the bill when it comes to grey or silver foliage. Consider plants like Echium, Convolvulus, Gazania, Teucrium, Lavender and many Australian plants like Westringea, Banksia and Leptospermum just to name a few. To add some vibrant colours to existing grey-foliaged plants, there are many other varieties that will tolerate salt laden winds and withstand the drier summers. These include Kniphofia (red hot pokers), Agapanthus, Verbena, Oleander, Cistus and a big range of succulents. Take a drive around your local area and investigate the possibilities. There are some exceptional gardens along this beautiful coastline. Your local nurseryman will be able to give you more ideas, so call in and say hello.

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. The village of Central Tilba was founded in 1895, when Sam Bate created a subdivision on his land and sold lots at auction. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent

Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leatherwork, woodwork, jewellery, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. Moruya The township of Moruya has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore. It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the statue of Captain James Cook in Sydney's Botanic Gardens. These days however, Moruya is known for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Moruya has a great array of specialty shops for those looking for something a little bit different. Fantastic cafes,

Moruya has a thriving arts community, with exhibitions frequently held at the Mechanics Institute. Every year there are a number of festivals held, including the River of Art, Eurobodalla Slow Food and Moruya Jazz Festivals. The Deua National Park, the largest in the South East region is a fantastic spot for bushwalking, with the area surrounding the headwaters of the Deua River protected by reserves and wilderness areas. Moruya Heads is about 10kms to the

east and boasts beautiful views north along the coast and west over the spectacular mountains of the Eastern Escarpment.

Free concert for Youth Week - Aamplify 2011 Battle-of-the-bands Aamplify is the Eurobodalla Shire Council’s premier Youth Week event, and the line-up for the 2011 Battleof-the-bands features a fantastic mix of local talent and touring bands, all showcasing the talents of young people. Skydive Oz puts on a display in Batemans Bay With over 23,000 jumps experience between them, three of the crew from Skydive Oz recently put on a show for local sports enthusiasts at the Hanging Rock Sporting Complex in Batemans Bay. It all started with a request to hold a stall at the inaugural Eurobodalla Sports Expo organised by the Eurobodalla Shire Council, but Skydive Oz came up with a better way to show skydiving to the crowd! Hundreds of locals stopped in their tracks to look skywards as Power FM announced the three parachutes soaring in the stunning blue sky over the Bay. "It couldn’t have been a more perfect day", said instructor Sally Baker, "...not a cloud in the sky and a light north easterly breeze made for smooth landings onto the AFL field". Sally gracefully landed first, followed by Chief Instructor Jules McConnel zooming in over the crowd to display the speed and accuracy at which you

can fly a parachute. “It’s great to see the kids' reactions as you swoop in over them...they just love it!” remarked Jules. But the real show came from the last landing, with a count-down from the crowd as Paul Smith landed trailing a 1500 square foot flag of Australia. Paul has years of experience as a display skydiver jumping into the MCG, Sydney’s Royal Easter Show and Stadium Australia. "It doesn’t matter what size crowd or how high profile the display, it still gets the blood pumping jumping", said Paul. "I prefer demos like these where you can mingle with the crowd after... especially so close to home – we live in a beautiful part of the world", he said with a big smile. Paul is the owner of Skydive Oz, based at Moruya Airport, that offers tandem skydiving and learn to skydive courses all year round. Skydive Oz also holds regular events, hosted by national champions, for experienced skydivers

to hone their skills, attracting people from interstate and overseas. "They keep coming back, not just for the skydiving but the view and the relaxed atmosphere of a drop zone on the coast", Paul proudly stated. Bay Theatre Players kick off with a laugh Eurobodalla’s multi-award winning community theatre company the Bay Theatre Players kicks off its 2011 season with the popular musical comedy “Dinkum Assorted” by Linda Aronson. “Packed” with WW11 music, drama and larrikin humour, this is a real favourite with Australian audiences.
