April Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - we hope you enjoy your time in this fantastic region. As always, there's plenty of choices if you're looking for things to do. Who said nothing much happens in the country?! This month we're featuring the arts, as there are heaps of events happening throughout the month. On Good Friday, the Four Winds Festival is launched with a free performance on Dickinson Oval featuring 'Windsong', a collaborative piece created by locals. The Festival, which features extraordinary performers from Australia and overseas, continues over the weekend. The wonderful Tilba Easter Festival, where the famous Bate St is closed and the whole village comes out to play, is on Saturday April 3rd. It's a truly unique experience, and everyone's invited to join in. Also on over the Easter weekend is the Sapphire Watercolourists' exhibition

Contents at the Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club (page 10), an Easter Family Fair at Magic Mountain (page 19) and a NPWS Discovery Program (page 13). Later in the month, the Moruya District Hospital Auxiliary has a Family Fun Day on Saturday April 10th (page 39), there's a big fundraiser for car crash victim Tegan Lloyd of Bemboka on Saturday 17th (page 22) and Co-Opera are performing La Boheme at Wolumla on Thursday April 22. George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another

century. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shorebased whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay.- the Seahorse Inn here has been beautifully restored.

Greening the Silver City: seeds of bush regeneration Greening the Silver City: seeds of bush regeneration is a travelling exhibition from Sydney's Powerhouse Museum and is at the Eden Killer Whale Museum from February 6th - April 26th. The exhibition explores the collaboration between community and industry in creating one of the first bush regeneration sites in Australia. When thinking of Broken Hill the mind conjures up images of a mining town on the edge of the outback. Not many people know of its significance in environmental history as the site of one of Australia’s earliest green actions.

In 1936, the Barrier Field Naturalists Club led by Albert Morris, enlisted the help of a mining company, and through the process of native revegetation defeated the drifts of sand that were swallowing the outskirts of the famous mining town. Albert's wife Margaret Morris continued his work after Albert's death in 1939, and this bush revegetation helped make Broken Hill a livable city. The Broken Hill revegetation site was the first example of successful bush regeneration in its broadest sense within Australia. It improved the

standard of living of residents as well as conserving plant and animal biodiversity. The regeneration reserves are now National-Trust listed. Morris also photographed the flowers and landscape of the surrounding area. These black and white slides were hand coloured by his wife Margaret and are featured in the touring exhibition. Greening the Silver City: seeds of bush regeneration is a regional touring exhibition developed by the Powerhouse Museum in collaboration with Broken Hill City Council and community and supported by Movable Heritage NSW.

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late nineteenth century. However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. This thriving village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops, and pubs. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is

Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. There is an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth. There are also walking tracks and viewing platforms. Pambula Lake is just south where there’s a boat ramp and oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters.

Watercolour exhibition at the Pambula Merimbula Golf Club The Sapphire Coast is home to 12 very talented watercolour artists, known collectively as the Sapphire Watercolourists, and they've been hard at work at the easel. Their paintings will be shown at a major exhibition at the Pambula Merimbula Golf Club from Friday 2nd to Tuesday 6th April. The watercolour medium is at its best when glorious transparent washes are used to portray brilliant effects of light and shade. Co-Opera brings Puccini's La Boheme to the Coast Co-Opera has been touring annually throughout regional Australia since 1993. This year the company will again be at Wolumla Hall with their production of Puccini’s opera, La Boheme. Like so many works in the established musical repertoire, La Boheme was only moderately successful. Since then this romantic and tragic opera has become one of the most widely performed of all time. The Bohemians are an idealistic, penniless bunch intent on enjoying the festive season, which is the context for this story. Tribulations, celebrations and the troubled triangle

of Musetta, Marcello and Alcindoro provide a counterpoint to the genuine and profound love between Rodolfo and Mimi. Love’s greatest enemy, misunderstanding, threatens to sabotage their union and the outcome, as everyone knows, is fatal. Puccini’s brilliant score amplifies the drama and, as long as we believe in these characters, this story inevitably touches our most fundamental human emotions – so bring lots of tissues. Experienced choreographer/director, Nick Carroll, formerly a dancer with Ballet Rambert in London, always aims to entertain – he choreographed the production of Kiss Me, Kate which

Co-Opera performed here a few years ago. With its blend of humour, romance and tragedy, La Boheme, provides fertile material for a complete theatrical experience. To celebrate the National Trust Heritage Festival, the Old School Museum in Merimbula is hosting an exhibition titled The Back Door to NSW. This year the theme of the Festival is 'The Making of Our Nation'. Ships taking shelter in Twofold Bay opened the back door to the colony of NSW. Early settlement boundaries were set at the Moruya River but sealing, whaling, wattlebark, wool, dairying, bacon, cornflour, fishing, oysters, goldmining, shipping and timber industries from the far south contributed to the wealth of the colony and the making of our nation. A comprehensive display of this history will be at the Old School Museum 9 24 April. Originally built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers, squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. It provides a secure site for displays of local history such as stories of: • Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and

lost it by investing in the Pambula goldfields; • the Wharf and the Illawarra Steamship Company that provided transport for people and goods up and down the coast before roads were built; • Syms Covington, who travelled with Charles Darwin in the Beagle and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant; • gold and pyrophyllite mining around Pambula; • the wrecking of the William Dawes and the SS Merimbula; • mutiny and murder on an American whaling ship, and more. The Museum is situated in Main Street (opposite the RSL), Merimbula and is open from 1.30pm – 4.00pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (closed Christmas Day). Magic Mountain's Easter Family Fair Feel like doing something a bit different this Easter? Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting some $50m of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a

must for anyone new to the region; the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. The Heritage Centre is also home to

the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region.

Former Cronulla Sharks/South Sydney Rabbitohs star David Peachey plans to attend, bringing signed NRL jerseys to be auctioned. Over the past two months the Bemboka community has bonded together to support one of their own, Tegan Lloyd, who was seriously injured in a car accident near Eden. Tegan’s injuries are extremely severe and lifelong, requiring indefinite hospitalisation and rehabilitation. The Bemboka community have launched 'Tegan's Fund, and in conjunction with the Bemboka Lions Club Inc., have organised a family fun day and fundraiser at Colombo Park, Bemboka on Saturday 17th April 2010

Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. The Wharf also has tourist information on Tathra and surrounding areas. Every January, the Tathra Wharf to Waves Beach Swim is held to raise funds for various community groups. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters,

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. If you’re keen to play some golf or tennis, try the Tathra Beach Country Club. Tathra also has plenty of great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants. Tathra is a great base from which you can explore the Mimosa Rocks National Park, which follows the coast up towards Bermagui. Beaches include Nelsons, Moon Bay, and Bithry Inlet, with camping available at Gillards and Middle Beach.

After receiving almost $1m in funding from the Federal Government, it is hoped that the club rooms of the Bermagui Surf Lifesaving Club at Horseshoe Bay will be completed by mid-2010. Four Winds - "One of the best Festivals in Australia" Different times and different cultures will be brought together in three days of exquisite music at the Four Winds Festival in Bermagui from April 2nd 4th. The Festival was shortlisted by Limelight Magazine as one of the six best Festivals in Australia in 2008. The romance of renaissance Italy and music reverberating around the ancient squares of Tuscany will be brought alive in the Australian bush by Italian maestro Paolo Pandolfo, the “Yo Yo Ma of the viola da gamba”. Sultry flamenco from Arte Kanela will play as dusk settles on Friday and bring a contemporary latino element picked up by the Flinders quarter on Sunday when they join with Karin Schaupp on guitar in a new collaboration of fandango with friends. Karin will join with harpist Marshall McGuire in a first time collaboration on strings playing de Falla, Granados and an Albeniz tango. The exhilarating open air site for the Festival, close to the sea, will give people an opportunity to stretch out on the grass and dream to Melbourne group e21 singing songs of earth, sky and sea, including mediaeval Gregorian chant and songs of place from Australian Indigenous songlines. Gospel and soul will be brought to mind when the women of the Black

Arm Band sing in 13 Indigenous languages on Sunday afternoon – anyone who enjoys Sweet Honey in

A world premier on Saturday afternoon from the Andrea Keller Quartet, commissioned by the Keir Foundation, will be a highlight of a weekend and will blur collaboration and improvisation in jazz and contemporary classical music. The Montreal Goldfield is a Heritage Site 7km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. It is a relatively intact remnant of the gold rush days of the early 1880s, and is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea. A section of the original goldfield has been preserved, but for safety reasons, you can only enter the Goldfield as part of a tour. This however provides a wonderful opportunity to hear the full Montreal story; a story of mystery, history and fascinating anecdotes. Compacted paths and boardwalks allow visitors to wander through the

beautiful forest and tree ferns. During the goldrush period, the miners, in their frenzy for profit, laid the area bare; hard to imagine now given the lushness of the area. The track itself is approximately 200m long and most is wheel chair accessible, and there are plenty of strategically located benches along the track. Tours of the Goldfield are held daily at 2pm and take around 1 ¼ hours, with toilet facilities available. The Big Hole/Marble Arch

4km return Approx. 1.5 hours Big Hole 13km return Approx. 5.5 hours Marble Arch Deua National Park The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

Follow the track through granite outcrops and forest rich with arboreal mammals to a viewing platform overlooking Tuross Falls and the spectacular gorge.

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs.. Take a stroll around the town and experience the delightful ambience of yesteryear. Take your pick from an array of art and craft, rare gems and jewelry, pottery, woodwork & leatherwork, or hunt among the collectables, curios and old wares on offer. Monthly Garden Advice Food For Thought Whether you are reading this as a tourist or as someone who lives within the area covered by this publication, consideration should be given to planting edible plants in the garden. One should consider the enormous range of plants that are sold in nurseries from common vegetables, berries and fruits through to unusual Australian native fruits that are now available commercially. Even the smallest garden can afford to have a few edible food plants. Fruit trees can be planted as ornamentals as well as supplying the gardener with a delicious yield. Many fruit trees are deciduous, providing shade in summer, sun in winter and flowers in spring. Other fruits like berries can be planted in a sunny spot instead of small shrubs, and many of the fruiting vines can be grown against fences, trellises or walls. There are many new dwarf fruit trees that are very suited to pots, if space in the garden cannot be provided. To successfully grow vegetables, herbs or other edible plants the three

essentials are good soil, sun and drainage. This applies whether you are setting up a vegetable garden, incorporating edible plants into a flower garden, or finding that certain place for a fruit tree. Use a premium potting mix if gardening in pots Fruit and vegetables that have to struggle against the elements are usually tough and not as sweet and tasty as ones that have optimum growing conditions. Don’t be afraid to fertilise regularly and shelter plants from winds. This can increase the yield by up to 50 per cent. Prepare your vegetable garden now with some added lime and composted manures to ensure a successful planting of onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, broad beans, parsnips etc. Check the seed stand at your local nursery for interesting new varieties that can be container grown should you have run out of space. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Enjoy the community spirit at the Tilba Easter Festival The Tilba Easter Festival on Saturday, April 3rd, is jam-packed with entertainment & activities to suit all the family. Enjoy Town criers, hilarious street games, live music on 5 stages, roaming performers, and circus workshops. There’s an art competition and exhibition, craft demonstrations, children’s activities, market stalls and delicious food. The Festival takes place in the magical setting of Central Tilba’s main street with its colourful 100-yearold buildings. The entire village and surrounding lush volcanic farmland rolling down to the ocean, have been protected by the National Trust and is just a short drive south from Narooma. Children will be entertained by the Great Zamboni the magician, and the Pat the Possum show. Rides, street games and the reptile awareness show take place throughout the day. The traditional bushies boot throw and

egg toss games are open to all comers. To reconnect with our rural heritage, exhibitions will include sheep shearing, whip cracking and rumours of a new game for the day: the udder toss! The Festival prides itself on promoting and supporting local talent. This year, a Youth Talent Quest will be held, along with a special stage to showcase the diversity of dance performers in our area. This will provide opportunities for our young up and coming performers to get on stage and gain valuable performance experience. Pets of all shapes and sizes are welcome to attend the Pet Parade, to be held for the first time. Best Dressed and most unusual pets of all shapes and sizes will strut their stuff along the main street. Easter Saturday is the one day each year when Bate Street is closed to traffic and open to a huge array of

culture and festivities. A modest donation ($5 adults, $2 kids 2-16) covers a full day’s entertainment. What a time to wet a line along the South Coast of NSW. April is prime time for most fish species with something available for every angler! Estuaries: Have been fishing extremely well for flathead, bream, whiting, flounder and tailor. All estuaries along the coast are firing with the better ones being Merimbula, Bega River, Tuross and Bateman’s Bay. Using both soft plastics and fresh bait like striped tuna, prawns and bass yabbies should see a fish or two in the bag. Concentrate your efforts in the lower sections of the estuaries towards the entrances for best results. Offshore: Where do you start? Marlins have been going great guns with some boaties having 5-6 shots per day. Trolling skirted lures and switchbaiting have been the best methods to target them. Kingfish have been on the chew at Montague Island with most inshore reefs holding good concentrations of snapper, morwong and flathead. If one reef is a little quiet move around and find the fish, don’t let them find you, you may be waiting awhile! Rocks: Salmon have been prolific right along the coast with most headlands producing the goods. We have had pockets of colder water close in this season and the salmon respond well to these conditions. Smaller chromed lures and whole pilchards rigged on ganged hooks should do the trick. Expect the odd smaller kingfish and bonito when targeting the salmon also. Blackfish and drummer will be available in the wash zones. Best baits are cabbage, cunjevoi, abgut and bread pieces especially for drummer. Beaches: With the increased rainfall we had last month the beaches have benefited significantly. The fresh pushing out of the local estuaries onto the beaches has seen salmon, tailor, mulloway, bream, whiting and mullet all have a chew at times. Fishing the top of the tide and first 2 hours of the run-out tide is best, with pilchards, bluebait, squid, beach worms and pipi being the most productive baits. Most beaches have been fishing well but the better ones have been Gillard’s, North Tura, Tilba, Narooma main, Brou, Blackfellow’s and Congo. Tight lines till next month. Stuart Hindson

While there, take a walk in the Murramarang National Park.
