February Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - where else in the world would you want to be this summer? February marks the beginning of the festival season, with the16th Annual Cobargo Folk Festival the first cab off the rank. Running from Friday 25th February until Sunday 27th, Cobargo is a friendly festival with internationallyrenowned performers playing in intimate venues. Details of the Festival are on pages 29 and 30. As part of their 80th anniversary celebrations, the Eden Killer Whale Museum is presenting a new exhibition titled "Collectoscope" featuring rarely displayed items in its collection - details on page 6. Webers Circus are visiting Batemans Bay in February, and we've got five Family passes to give away. Competition details are on page 46, so make sure you get your entry in on time; the competition closes on February 7th.
Contents The Sapphire Coast Music Society continue their committment to bringing classical musicians of national and international standing to the Far South Coast in 2011. Their season commences with a performance by the Empyrean Trio at the Wolumla Hall on Sunday 27th February; definitely a concert not to be missed - see page 15 for details. There are 7 exhibition openings this month that we know of; more than enough to keep any opening night tragics happy. See page 28 for details. Don't forget the Bega Valley Shire Council has recently placed a ban on smoking at a range of outdoor public locations. We hope you have a truly memorable February wherever you are on the Far South Coast.

George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. It's also worth the drive to visit Davidson's Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, at Kiah Inlet on Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Historic Boydtown, south of Eden, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843; the Seahorse Inn here has been beautifully restored.

Eden Killer Whale Museum celebrates its 80th anniversary On 17 September 1930, whilst on his daily walk, Allie Greig discovered the body of the killer whale known as Tom. This single event was the impetus behind establishing a museum in Eden; a place to commemorate the intriguing story of the equal working relationship between the whalers and killer whales of Twofold Bay. Tom’s body was processed across the bay at Davidson Whaling Station on the shores of Kiah Inlet. Local

entrepreneur, John R. Logan drove the vision, and in February the following year formed a committee to begin the project of establishing a home for the skeleton of Tom. The building was eventually finished in 1938 with Tom being installed early in 1939. Unfortunately Logan died in 1937, never seeing his dream realised. The museum building is now an iconic centrepiece overlooking the sapphire waters of Twofold Bay and has recently been recognised as holding collections of local, national and international significance. This year Eden Killer Whale Museum has a full programme

of events planned to celebrate its 80th anniversary including the new exhibition, Collectoscope. Collectoscope showcases rarely displayed items and reflects on the development of local and national culture in the distant and recent past. Artefacts range across a broad cross section of collecting areas including Australiana, militaria and costume. This exhibition complements the permanent exhibitions that encompass the historical aspects of Eden’s timber, fishing and whaling industries and maritime heritage. Pambula
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late 19th century. However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.
Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. One of these buildings is the former home of Syms Covington, assistant to the great naturalist, Charles Darwin, on the second voyage of The Beagle in the 1830s. He became postmaster of Pambula in 1854, but remained in contact with the renowned scientist, sending a box of Twofold Bay barnacles to help in Darwin’s research. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs.
Pambula Beach has with an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth. There are also walking tracks and viewing platforms.
At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, tenpin bowling, experiencing family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June. Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

Sapphire Coast Music Society continues to delight audiences in 2011 The concert program for 2011 by the Sapphire Coast Music Society provides a smorgasbord of musical talent, showcasing some of Australia’s most talented performers. The concert series starts off with the Empyrean Trio in February followed by the popular opera The Marriage of Figaro performed by the renowned touring opera company, Co Opera, in March. The remaining concerts this year include a piano/cello duo (Amy Putt and Adam Szabo), the annual Sydney Conservatorium of Music Concert in June, a piano concert performed by the international pianist, Roman Rudnitsky. The calendar concludes with the final concert in October with the Tavantinsuyu Ensemble of violin, piano, clarinet and viola. The first concert on Sunday, 27th February at 2.30pm at Wolumla Hall performed by the Empyrean Trio promises to be an extraordinary musical experience. Formed in 2008, Trio Empyrean brings together three of Australia’s most experienced and respected ensemble musicians – David Pereira (cellist), Andrew Lorenz (violin) and pianist Wendy Lorenz. All three Canberra-based musicians have featured as soloists with Australia’s major orchestras and have released a range of recordings. David Pereira is recognised as one of Australia’s top cellists. His background includes seven years as Principal Cellist of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and three years as Principal Cellist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has performed both as a soloist and with ensembles at famous venues around the world. Andrew Lorenz has enjoyed a varied, successful career as solo violinist, chamber musician, orchestral leader, teacher and conductor. He has performed with many of Australia’s major orchestras and leading chamber groups, and has toured extensively
throughout Australia, Europe, North America and Asia. Wendy Lorenz has worked actively as both pianist and teacher, performing extensively throughout Australia and overseas. Her career has gone from strength to strength since she graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium as ‘Student of the Year’. Tickets for this concert will be available from mid February from Magpie Music (Bega), Booktique Bookshop (Merimbula), Eden Music Centre or at the door ($18 for Members, $25 for Non-Members and $21 for Concession holders). Contact Pat Reilly (6495 9708) for further information on becoming a member or taking out a series subscription.

Discover history at Merimbula's Old School Museum One of the main tourist attractions in Merimbula is the Old School Museum. The building was originally constructed for use as a school following the donation of the land by Sir William Manning. The school opened in 1873 and in 1875 enrolments totalled 39 children. By 1946 however, the building had been vacated, and stood unused for many years. In 1973 the Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society began operating the museum from this very suitable building. The structure is listed on the register of the National Trust of Australia. The Old School Museum now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers, squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. It provides a secure site for displays of local history such as stories of:
• Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and lost it by investing in the Pambula goldfields; • the Wharf and the Illawarra Steamship Company that provided transport for people and goods up and down the coast before roads were built; • Syms Covington, who travelled with Charles Darwin in the Beagle
and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant; • gold and pyrophyllite mining around Pambula; • the wrecking of the William Dawes and the SS Merimbula; The Museum is opposite the RSL in Main Street and is open from 1.30pm – 4.00pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Entry is only $3 and children are welcome at no cost. For more information, phone 6495 4844.

Lakeview Hotel listed in Good Pub Food Guide 2011 Congratulations to Merimbula's Lakeview Hotel, listed in the inaugural Sydney Morning Herald Good Pub Food Guide 2011. Needless to say, owner Dennis Souter was delighted to discover the pub had been given a score of 15.5 out of 20. The only pub between Eden and Wollongong to score a better rating is the Heads Hotel at Shoalhaven, some 300km away, and it only scored a half a point more than the Lakeview. This is the first time that the SMH has produced a guide focusing solely on pub food, and the research to determine who made the grade was extensive. From an initial list of some 1600 hotels spread across New South Wales, 532 were visited, with the final list cut down to 394 reviewed hotels. Months were spent by a team of 71 reviewers, anonymously visiting pubs in Sydney and around the state. Points were allocated in three categories; food, service, ambience and 'magic'. The Lakeview impressed with the range of $10 lunches and the chef's dishes of the day. So it's official - the Lakeview has the best pub food on the coast - book now!

Fishing Report & Tide Chart - February February along the South Coast sees some great fishing available. Whether you're fishing the rocks, beaches, estuaries or offshore, an array of species will be on offer using a variety of different methods. Good luck! Beaches: Fishing the late afternoons on a rising tide can pay huge dividends during February, with bream, whiting, tailor and possibly mulloway all on the cards. Look for a beach that has a deeper gutter to the northern end of it for best results. Fresh squid, pilchards, pipi and prawns are ideal, but using live beach worms for bait is certainly the best. Better beaches to try are Gillards, Tilba, Brou, and Cuttagee though most beaches along the coast will hold fish. Rocks: The pelagic action will be in full swing with salmon, tailor, kingfish and bonito all available. Anglers throwing chromed sliced lures up to 60grams, whole pilchards rigged on ganged hooks and live bait will have a great time. Almost any deeper headland should produce but some of the better ledges are Tura Head, Tathra Wharf, Mystery Bay and the Golf course rocks at Narooma. Expect a few bream, drummer and blackfish in the washes too, with burley a must for consistent results. Estuaries: Most estuaries along the coast will continue to fish well despite the increased boat traffic that this time of year brings. Flathead, whiting, bream, tailor and mulloway will all be available,
with soft plastics, live baiting and fresh baits the best way to tempt one. Concentrate your efforts around tide changes with early mornings also a gun time to fish the estuary. Using burley in conjunction with fresh baits should see some tasty fillets in the pan. The Clyde River, Wagonga Inlet, Bega River and Merimbula Lake would be the pick of the estuaries to fish. Offshore: With the water hovering around the 22-24deg mark, marlin, tuna and albacore will be patrolling the current lines. Depending on bait activity will determine where the fish are, but trolling lures and slow trolling live baits from the 40-fathom line to the shelf is a good starting point. Inshore, snapper, kingfish, morwong, flathead and long finned perch should keep the bottom bouncing brigade happy. Almost all reefs will be holding fish with fresh squid, striped tuna fillets and pilchards being the best baits. Tight lines till next month.
Stuart Hindson is the owner of Aussie Fish Estuary Adventures, and provides guided fishing charters from Wonboyn to Batemans Bay and all estuaries in between. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 5 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a

place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for anyone new to the region; housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery, which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. The Wharf also has tourist information on Tathra and surrounding areas. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has plenty of great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants. Tathra is a great base from which
you can explore the Mimosa Rocks National Park, which follows the coast up towards Bermagui. Beaches include Nelsons, Moon Bay, and Bithry Inlet, with camping available at Gillards and Middle Beach.

Bush walking in and around Tathra Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve From Tathra, head back toward Bega on the Snowy Mountains Highway, and turn right into Thompsons Drive. The car park on the right marks the start of the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve. This 60 hectare wildlife corridor provides habitat for a range of fauna species, including glossy blackcockatoos
(below left), listed as a threatened species. These rare birds feed on the black sheoaks (Allocasuarina litoralis) found in coastal forests, and build nests in the hollows of old or dead trees. The Main Ridge Track passes through coastal rainforest down to a secluded wetland, with a variety of waterbirds, frogs and water dragons. Continue through the Reserve until you reach Dilkerra Rd; follow this until you reach the famous Tathra beach. The walk takes about 45 minutes one way, and is graded as easy - medium.

Cobargo Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of
century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs.

Cobargo Folk Festival - "the best little Festival in the country" When a group of local performers organised the first Cobargo Folk Festival back in 1996, few of them expected it to still be going strong 16 years later. The Festival planned for 2011 is small enough to be personal and preserve the traditional elements of folk music in Australia. But at Cobargo, ‘folk’ is loosely interpreted to include a wide range of music, comedy, poetry, dance and elements of jazz, blues, roots, acapella, bluegrass and country. A total of eight venues will provide continuous entertainment over the weekend, with some starting on Friday afternoon. This year's line up of talent includes Dana Lyons (USA), The Fagans (Aus & UK), Martin Wyndham-Read (UK) Bruce Watson, Blue Ruins, Danny Mack and Coolgrass. Well-known local names playing at Cobargo include Damien Neil and
Damon Davies, Lucie Thorne and Jay McMahon, Daniel Champagne, Pete Wild and Kate Burke, Guitarama and the Kade Brown Trio. For a full listing of performers and the 2011 Folk Festival schedule, go to www.cobargofolkfestival.com There are workshops for guitar, fiddle, mandolin, accordion, banjo, songwriting and singing with everyone encouraged to join in the singing and poetry sessions or perform at the open mic venues. The ‘Crossing’ will again be a venue dedicated to performances and workshops for young people, providing an opportunity for all to learn sound and stagecraft, songwriting and to improve their musical skills. The Cobargo Folk Festival is run entirely by volunteers from the Yuin Folk Club Inc., and the local community. Early-bird tickets are available from
January 1st until February 23nd at Magpie Music, Bega, Planet TX, Moruya, or at Well Thumbed Books Cobargo. You can also book online from the Cobargo Folk Festival website at www.cobargofolkfestival.com, or by ringing the Festival Hotline on 02) 6493 6758 or 0427 919 010. Camping is available at the Cobargo Showgrounds for a small charge, there is wheelchair access (toilet and shower) available as well and free day parking. There are plenty of food stalls selling a range of delicious meals and snacks. Below: Kade Brown from the Kade Brown Trio performing at the 2010 Cobargo Folk Festival

Monthly Garden Advice Fresh Is Best Although the warm weather is still with us, thought should soon be given to the planting of the autumn / winter vegetable garden. It's also the time perfect time to add some other interesting food plants to your garden. Whether you are reading this as a visitor or as someone who lives within the area covered by this publication, consideration should be given to planting edible plants in the garden. One should consider the enormous range of plants that are sold in nurseries from common vegetables, berries and fruits
through to unusual Australian native fruits. Even the smallest garden can afford to have a few edible food plants. Fruit trees can be planted as ornamentals as well as supplying the gardener with a delicious yield. Many fruit trees are deciduous, providing shade in summer, sun in winter and flowers in spring. Other fruits, including berries, can be planted in a sunny spot instead of small shrubs, and many of the fruiting vines can be grown against fences, trellises or walls. Look out for Loganberry,
Silvanberry, Raspberry, Blueberry, Currants and Gooseberry just to name a few. To successfully grow vegetables, herbs or other edible plants the three essentials are good soil sun and drainage. This applies whether you are setting up a vegetable garden, incorporating edible plants into a flower garden or finding that certain place for a fruit tree. Use a premium potting mix if gardening in pots. Fruit and vegetables that have to struggle against the elements are usually tough and not as sweet and tasty as ones that have optimum growing conditions. Don’t be afraid to fertilise regularly and shelter plants from winds. This can increase the yield by up to 50 per cent. Prepare your vegetable garden now with some added lime and composted manures to ensure a successful planting of onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, broad beans, parsnips etc.

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. The village of Central Tilba was founded in 1895, when Sam Bate created a subdivision on his land and sold lots at auction. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent

Bodalla Secrets
In 2010 Bodalla celebrated the 150th anniversary of Thomas Mort's purchase of 13,000 acres of land at Bodalla and the beginning of the Bodalla Estate. Mort became a pioneer of the Australian dairying industry, and many of the dairy farms he established still operate today. The magnificent All Saints Church, constructed from granite quarried on Bodalla Estate, was dedicated by the Mort family to Thomas Mort’s memory, with the foundation stone laid two years after he died in 1880. All Saints is open each day for visitors, and it's worth a stop just to see the stained glass windows. Bodalla today is a bustling village with its historical roots still present; make sure you visit the businesses mentioned below as you explore this picturesque village.

Spend an hour, a day or more walking in the National Parks and reserves of the Region. The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. Ask at a NPWS office or local tourist information centre about others. Please note that for all these walks, strong footwear should be worn, carry food and water, and take clothing suitable for changing weather conditions.

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income in the previous century. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.

Kayaking & canoeing in the land of many waters Eurobodalla, land of many waters, is kayaking heaven with four major river systems, 20 lakes, 83 beaches and many islands along 130 kilometres of Batemans Marine Park coastline. Thinking about kayaking around the Eurobodalla this summer? Listed below are some great flatwater and sea kayaking routes, courtesy of Eurobodalla Coast Tourism's Kayaking & Canoeing brochure. Take a more detailed map if you’re paddling somewhere new and without a guide, or pick up the brochure from one of the Eurobodalla Tourist Information Centres. Here are some important safety tips to remember when you undertake any of the routes in this guide: Be Seen-Be Safe - Wear bright coloured

clothing. Keep out of mooring areas (where other boats hide your presence). Water safety - Be aware of water safety rules and procedures with information from boating, marine or water sports organisations. Skills - Take a lesson if you need to. Instruction is available in Eurobodalla for all levels of kayaking skills. Safety Vests - Always wear a life vest or life jacket. Helmets - Recommended for surf and white-water kayaking and when paddling near rough water and rocks. Paddle with someone - If possible and tell someone where you will be going and when you expect to return. Maps - Take a map with you if you are not familiar with the route. Be aware of local conditions - Including currents, tides, water levels, shoreline variations and special hazards. Check the weather - Plus know about likely changes, such as offshore winds that may occur. Wind - Will slow down paddling and the extra effort required will tire you more quickly than normal. Also think about offshore winds – don’t get blown away from shore. Waves - Can be larger than expected and can change in size depending on water depth. Tides - Can be strong and having to paddle against the tide can make you tire quickly. Tidal flow against the wind direction will make waves steeper and water more choppy – plan your paddle
