Must see & Do
Ben Boyd National Park - Kiah Inlet George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows. This history of collaboration between killer whales and humans was the subject of the documentary “Killers Of Eden”, screened on ABC TV in 2006. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. To celebrate the significance of whales to the town, Eden holds its Whale Festival in November each year.
The historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay, in the heyday of the whaling industry. The Seahorse Inn, also built in 1843, has been beautifully restored to its former glory, and the ruins of Boyd’s church can still be seen. Eden is a paradise for those who love to fish, with kilometres of beaches, river estuaries and rock platforms to explore, as well as charter boat operations for access for deep-sea fishing. Eden has beautiful beaches close to town; try Aslings Beach for a surf, or Corcora Beach for fun with the family.

An entertaining live commentary is given throughout and morning tea is included. Beer and wine are also available. Digger’s Best Friend: an A-Z of animals in war The Australian War Memorial’s latest travelling exhibition, Digger’s Best Friend offers an A to Z of animals in war, and will on be display at Eden Killer Whale Museum starting December. Digger’s Best Friend offers an A to Z of animals in war, from mascots and messengers to creepy-crawlies. Animals are put to many uses in war. Sometimes they have jobs to do: the horses, camels, mules, and donkeys used to transport soldiers and equipment, as well as carrier pigeons and tracker dogs

with their special talents. While animals are often used as mascots and pets, or as symbols on badges and flags, Digger’s Best Friend also looks at those unwelcome animals, such as insects, rats and wild creatures, that make life in the field even more difficult and dangerous. The exhibition has been developed with a young audience in mind, but visitors of all ages will enjoy its fascinating and moving stories. The role of the exhibition is to present

history as it happened. There were no doubt some tragic stories, as there were for our service men and women in conflict zones, but this exhibition seeks to give recognition to the contribution made by animals. Digger’s Best Friend is open to the public from 5 December – 31 January 2010.

Must see & Do
Pambula Beach - Pambula Lake - Wyndham The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation. Pambula’s historic past is still in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. This thriving village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops, and pubs. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring the floodplain and former race course. Just south of Pambula is Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp and several oyster farmers who have fresh Pambula Lake oysters for sale.

Coastlife Celebrating 15yrs of Adventure The 2009 - 10 summer season is a great milestone for Coastlife Adventures; it celebrates 15 years in the adventure business.
Managing Director Col Funston says that "We’ve come a long way from our first year of borrowing a few old surfboards and wetsuits from a friend in Melbourne”. Coastlife provides outdoor adventure programs for schools from the Riverina in Victoria to Canberra and Sydney. Last month many students from the inland
town of Bourke, surfed and kayaked for the very first time. In the summer holidays Coastlife operates its surf school and marine kayak tours along the pristine beaches and estuaries of Tathra, Merimbula and Pambula (see ad below). Staff are fully qualified for the activities they lead and all equipment is provided. To celebrate their 15th birthday, Coastlife is giving every person that joins a kayak tour in December and January an opportunity to win a new “frenzy’ sit on top kayak. Bookings for surf lessons and kayak tours can be made on 6494 1122.

Oysters, like wine & cheese, have a distinct flavour, depending on where they are grown. Pambula Lake oysters have a smooth, subtle flavour influenced by the water they are produced in. The clean, clear waters of the lake are a combination of fresh water moving down the Pambula and Yowaka rivers, and tidal exchange from the Pacific Ocean - perfect for the production of the finest Sydney Rock Oysters. Broadwater Oysters, on Pambula Lake, won a Gold Medal at the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards in August 2009 for their locally grown oysters, following up on Silver Medals won in 2008.
With new signage making it easier to find them, you can visit Broadwater Oysters located on the Pambula Lake foreshore. Between Pambula and Eden, turn off the Princes Highway onto Landing Road and head down to the foreshore. Talk to farmers about oyster production and watch oysters being freshly opened for local restaurants and the public to enjoy. Broadwater Oysters offer fresh awardwinning oysters to eat ‘natural’ by the lake, or to take home to enjoy at your leisure. Broadwater Oysters: Shed 1, Landing Rd Pambula Lake. Phone 6495 6704

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Bega Valley with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are still visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early history. With its beautiful location on the shores of Merimbula Lake, there are plenty of places to enjoy the view; looking across the bay from the restored Merimbula Wharf, enjoying the sunrise or sunset from the Boardwalk around the southern section of the Lake, or strolling around Fishpen watching the pelicans.

Looking for something fun to do with the kids these holidays if it's not a beach day? At Top Fun in Merimbula, you’ll find Ten Pin Bowling, the Zone 3 Laser game, an 18-hole Mini Golf course and plenty of video and skill-based games. In fact, you’ll probably need a whole day to experience it all. For those who enjoy Ten Pin Bowling but need a bit of extra help, there are special aids available (bumpers, ramps and special balls), so that everyone can join in and have fun. For an adrenalin pumping experience try the Zone 3 laser game, where you can test your skills and courage in the ultraviolet, smoke filled maze, whilst dodging your opponents. There are video and skills-based games too, and tickets can be won with many of the amusements which can then be used to redeem prizes at the Kiosk. The 18-hole Mini golf course has been designed to provide maximum fun to all ages, and there’s a long-standing record just waiting to be broken! Admission and parking are free, and snacks and coffee are available. Open 7 days a week, Top Fun is located at the top of the town at 99 Main St. Merimbula. Discover local history at Merimbula's Old School Museum One of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the wonderful Old School Museum. A wonderful facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to spend some time these holidays. Originally built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers, squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. It provides a secure site for displays of local history such as stories of: • Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and lost it by investing in the Pambula goldfields; • the Wharf and the Illawarra Steam ship Company that provided trans port for people and goods up and down the coast before roads were built; • Syms Covington, who travelled with Charles Darwin in the Beagle and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant; • gold and pyrophyllite mining around Pambula; • the wrecking of the William Dawes and the SS Merimbula; • mutiny and murder on an American
whaling ship, and many more. The Museum is situated in Main Street (opposite the RSL), Merimbula and is open from 1.30pm – 4.00pm on
Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (closed Christmas Day). Entry is only $3 and children are welcome at no cost. For more information, phone 6495 4844.

Bega
Must see & Do
Home of the world famous Bega Cheese Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley, but it is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must.
The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region. Bega is still a friendly country town, even though the demographics have changed over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle.

the Kiama JanuaryVisit along thespectacular South Coast sees some great Blowhole fishingLittle available. Whether you're fishing the rocks, beaches, estuaries or Kiama offshore, historic an array of species Follow the will be township on offer usingwalk a variety of different methods and techniques. Good luck! Take a trip the spectacular Beaches: Fishing thetolate afternoons on a rising Minnamurra Rainforest Centrewith tide can pay huge dividends during January, bream,Travel whiting, along tailor and possibly mulloway all on the Jamberoo the cards. Look for a beach that has a deeper gutroad to Saddleback Mountain ter at its northern end for best results. Here you will get plenty of cover from the traditional Nor’easters that this month brings. Fresh squid, pilchards, pipi and striped tuna are ideal but live beach worms are certainly the best bait. Better beaches to try are Tura, Gillard’s, Camel, Tilba, Brou and Blackfellows. Rocks: The pelagic action will be in full swing with salmon, tailor, kingfish and bonito all available. Anglers throwing chromed sliced lures up to 60grams, whole pilchards rigged on ganged hooks and live bait will have a great time. Almost any deeper headland should produce, but some of the better ledges are Tura Head, Tathra Wharf, Mystery Bay and the Golf Course rocks at Narooma. If you’re after a feed, most washes will hold bream, blackfish and drummer with cunjevoi, fresh prawns, bread and cabbage being the gun baits. Offshore: With the water hovering around the 22deg mark, marlin, tuna and albacore will be patrolling the current lines. Bait activity will determine where the fish are, but trolling lures and slow trolling live baits from the 40-fathom line to the shelf is a good starting point. In-shore, snapper, kingfish, morwong, flathead and long finned perch should keep the bottom-bouncing brigade happy. Almost all reefs will be holding fish with fresh squid, striped tuna fillets and pilchards being the best baits. A few places to try are Horseshoe, Turingal, 6 and 12 mile, Potato Point and the reefs off Moruya. Montague Island will have kingfish also with jigs and live baits the best methods of catching them. Estuaries: Most estuaries along the coast will continue to fish well despite the increased boat traffic that this time of year brings. Flathead, whiting, bream, tailor and mulloway will all be available with soft plastics, live baiting and fresh baits the best way to tempt one. Concentrate your efforts around tide changes with early mornings also a good time to fish. Using burley in conjunction with fresh baits should see some great action with Pambula, Bermagui, Narooma and Batemans Bay estuaries good places to try. Tight lines all to next month. Stuart Hindson

Bermagui
Must see & Do
Wallaga Lake - Cuttagee Beach Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkelling, boating and canoeing. Book a fishing charter on one of the many local boats or throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River. Try out the 18-hole golf course, hit a ball around the tennis courts or play bowls. Test your riding skills at the Bermagui Mountain Bike Park. Go bush walking, take a guided walk or bird watch in the surrounding National Parks and State Forests. Take a guided tour of the Montreal Goldfield and learn about the discovery of gold in the 1880s. Drive south to taste local wines and enjoy a meal at the Mimosa Drystone Restaurant. There is a range of accommodation in Bermagui including B&Bs, motels, tourist/caravan parks, self-contained holiday units and houses and camping. The historic Bermagui Beach Hotel offers fine food, beverages and
accommodation in truly spectacular location overlooking Horseshoe Bay. Bermagui is undergoing something of a building boom, with the new $3.5m Fisherman's Co-op opening in December. This magnificent building, designed by architect Phillip Cox, features timber in its construction, including white stringybark poles that were harvested locally. After receiving almost $1m in funding from the Federal Government, it is hoped that the club rooms of the Bermagui Surf Lifesaving Club at Horseshoe Bay will be completed by mid-2010. Bermagui is a fantastic place to base yourself when on holiday. After you've finished exploring all the things to do around town, it's only a short drive to Foxglove Gardens at Tilba Tilba, and the historic village Central Tilba. Cobargo, the village famous for its working craftspeople, is only a 15 minute drive away. The Bermagui Visitor Information Centre in Bunga Street is open 7 days from 10am - 4pm, ph 02 6493 3054.

Cobargo
Must see & Do
Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production. The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful
example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs.. Take a stroll around the town and experience the delightful ambience of yesteryear. Take your pick from an array of art and craft, rare gems and jewelry, pottery, woodwork & leatherwork, or hunt among the collectables, curios and old wares on offer. Recharge your batteries at Valley Edge Cafe with great coffee and a fresh, delectable menu. Take a few minutes to enjoy the beautiful photography that adorns the walls - there are some truly spectacular images. Quaama, just south of Cobargo, is where you’ll find Fruit Ballad Wines. It’s well worth the short trip to drop in and try some of Jane’s wonderful hand-made fruit wines.; you’re bound to find something new.
Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira Creek Enjoy the Outdoor Gallery, with painted lightpoles and topiary sculptures Head south and try delicious fruit wines at Fruit Ballad in Quaama. SUMMER SURVIVORS With the warmer weather on the way we should now turn our thoughts to drier gardens and plants that can tolerate the hot weather with less moisture. There has been a tremendous resurgence in recent times for plants that require less water to survive and many developers of “new” plants are directing their total efforts to providing gardeners with these types of plants. Quality nurseries endeavour to have as many of these in stock at any one time and would be full of great ideas to assist you with your dry tolerant garden. With this in mind it is timely to mention plants that will suit periods of dry conditions, and also require less maintenance to keep them going. There are many plants - whether introduced or native, shrub or perennial that will tolerate extended periods of dry conditions and there is absolutely no reason why you cannot have a lovely garden full of “pretty” things. Consider plants that have silver or grey foliage as they not only survive lengthy periods of dryness and care, but also add background strength to the garden throughout the year. Place them amongst other shrubs to give contrast
to other flowering shrubs. In winter when parts of the garden may be looking dreary, the silver foliaged plants lift the garden out of the doldrums and plants like French lavender (Lavendula dentata) are at their best. Shrubs including Cistus, Westringea, Buddleia, Rosemary and Teucrium can add height and bulk to a garden and many perennials including: Geranium, Osteospermum, Lavender, Salvia (many types), can add the pretty. Check with your local nursery as to the cold hardiness of the plant. Consider using a range of herbs that not only give you visual pleasure but also culinary use. There are a tremendous assortment of herbs that have grey or silver foliage including Thyme, Sage, Rosemary, Wormwood and Oregano. These can be included in the garden that is low maintenance and can survive with less water than many other groups of plants. Plants with grey, light reflecting leaf surfaces seem to make them shine through the day and also can be used to good effect at night. As the day draws to a close, you will no-

tice that grey foliaged plants add a luminous note to your garden. Plants like Arctotis and Gazania planted amongst other plants not only add colour but also suit the low maintenance garden, as they are ideal for weed suppression. Please remember that many garden plants can survive lengthy periods of dry conditions and it is not necessary to water them every day. I recommend the use of water storage granules at the time of planting. Remember also to mulch as much of your garden as possible as this reduces the need for excessive use of water and will give your plants a much better chance of getting through to the next rainfall. I wish you all well for 2010 and let the rains fall in abundance.

Tilba
Must see & Do
Tilba Tilba - Central Tilba The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, jewellery, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery, a pub and famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. The Tilba Festival is held every Easter.

Sol has developed a unique style of jewellery using sterling silver and gold-filled wire to mount a huge variety of semi-precious stones. He might suggest you “pick a stone that jumps out at you” and watch him mount it into a pendant, ring ...or whatever... Sol also produced the widely acclaimed documentary film “The Hemp Revolution”, so naturally you’ll find a full range of environmentally friendly hemp clothes, hemp seed oil and cosmetics. Shanti’s passion for colour and style is reflected in the varied and ever changing ranges of women’s clothing for all sizes. Find something exciting for all occasions! Mogo
Must see & Do
Old Mogo Town The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica
nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different. Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo, home to 39 rare and exotic species., inlcuding the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’.

for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Batemans Bay has a fantastic 27 hole championship golf course, and there are plenty of other courses to play within easy driving distance. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee, or head north across the bridge and experience Long, Pebbly and Depot Beach. While there, take a walk in the Murramarang National Park. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. Picknicking by the water is a must. Ri
Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income in the previous century. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia; the bridge celebrated its 50th birthday in 2006. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or even a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. There are a myriad of beaches to explore, views to enjoy and walks to take, no matter what the season. Batemans Bay is a great destination
