There's a tonne of events happening over summer; our What's On feature on pages 28 - 30 has all the information you need to decide where to go and what to do. The Tathra Wharf to Waves weekend is a fantastic community event that features ocean swims and a mountain bike race based around the renovated Tathra Wharf. With funds raised going to local community groups, it's a great event to support. Read more on page 40.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in
& surrounds
the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

The Rag Tag Fleet - a fascinating insight into maritime war The Rag Tag Fleet was a phrase penned by Ladislaw Reday, one of a group of Americans who came to Australia in 1942 as part of the Mission X team. With the Japanese defeating US forces in the Philippines, the next strategy was to drive Japanese forces out of New Guinea, and without an available fleet at hand, the Rag Tag Fleet was born. The Mission X team scoured Australia’s eastern seaboard and New Zealand inspecting and procuring an unlikely fleet of attack vessels for the US Army. Known as the US Small Ships Section, they included wooden trawlers, scows, sailing

history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum craft and even a paddle-wheeler. While a fleet was beginning to be assembled, there was the realisation that crew were needed. Those fit enough were already engaged in the war, so it was left to the young, the old and those classed by the defence force as
medically unfit to take the helm. Charged with taking ammunition, supplies and troops through mostly unchartered waterways, these civilians faced enemy fire just the same as regular defence forces. However it is only within the last decade that their contribution to the American and Australian war effort has been officially recognised. Eden Killer Whale Museum’s latest exhibition The Rag Tag Fleet commemorates the 75th anniversary of the formation of this unusual fleet of ships, and remembers the men from the South Coast of NSW who served on them. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Bike riders love Panboola – it’s a perfect venue for families to enjoy a safe and easy ride together. Cycle around the Old Pambula Racecourse or pass through as a pleasant short cut if you are riding out to lunch at Oaklands or the Longstocking Brewery. Many tracks are also suitable for prams and scooters.
The wetlands are a well known for the extensive bird life with over 160 species recorded. You might even get to see the elusive Southern Emu Wren amongst the shrubs if you travel quietly out toward the river via the Corridor Circuit. Water dragons, echidnas and kangaroos also call Panboola home. The Panboola Centre at Watson’s Waterhole (behind the Idlewilde Motel) provides an alternate entry point with sealed car park, picnic tables and stunning vistas. Also to be found here is our original beautiful eaglesculpture. Panboola sits on community owned land and is managed by a team of volunteers. Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Discover the coast with Merimbula Air Services There’s nothing quite like flying in an aircraft to gain a real feel for a region - you literally get a bird's eye view. THE RAG TAG FLEET 5 June - 4th February 2018, Eden Killer Whale Museum, Eden Celebrating the 75th anniversary of what must be one of the most unusual fleets to take to the water during World War 2, The Rag Tag Fleet is a fascinating exhibition exploring a little-known part of naval history. The US Navy, suffering defeats in the Phillipines, decided to focus on driving the Japanese out of New Guinea. The only problem was, they didn't have any ships or sailors available. The Mission X team was charged with scouring Australia's eastern seaboard and New Zealand for suitable attack vessels. Known offiicially as the US Small Ships Section, but nick-named the Rag Tag Fleet by Mission X team

TATHRA WHARF TO WAVES 20th - 21st January, Tathra Ocean swim fans, runners and lovers of mountain bike tracks won’t be disappointed when visiting Tathra for the annual Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. Saturday's the day for the 2km Fun Run on the beach, or test yourself on a 30km mountain bike ride. Sunday is Ocean Swim day, with races for different age groups and distances. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the

case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre is a wonderful reproduction of the original butter factory that was situated on the site in the early 20th century and has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's. It provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. For those interested in the history of Bega, the Museum in the heart of the town houses a collection of photos, family histories, farm implements and machinery. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. There's a fantastic walking track that goes all the way from the sporting fields near the Bridge over to the Bega River. The track then follows the Old Racecourse.
Explore Brogo Dam with Brogo Wilderness Canoes Summer is a great time to explore the inland waterways of the Far South Coast - the days are fine, the water is warm and with any luck the nativ bass will be biting. One of the best locations to go canoeing is the Brogo Dam, with its extensive catchment running back into the magnificent Brogo Wilderness area. The waterways are pristine, and the peaceful backwaters are a haven for local native bird life and fauna - sea eagles, swooping azure kingfishers, water dragons, goannas and shy echidnas have all been observed on and around the Dam. To really experience the beauty of the Brogo Dam, you need to get out on the water.

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Start this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during an East Coast Low that hit the region in 2016, but with repairs completed, the Wharf has resumed its role as a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.
There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views. Extensive renovations at The Tathra Hotel have now been completed with the Hotel reopening in mid- November. Tathra Wharf To Waves - Ocean Swims and Bike Rides Ocean swim fans and lovers of mountain bike tracks won’t be disappointed by visiting Tathra on the third weekend of January 2018 for the annual Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. The series of ocean swims on Sunday January 21st is in its 17th year, and is considered the highlight of what promises to be an actionpacked weekend on the Far South Coast of NSW. On Saturday, January 20th, there’s a 2km fun run on Tathra Beach from the Country Club to the Surf Club, while mountain bike enthusiasts will also be in action that day, with a 30km ‘Bega to the Beach’ ride from Bega across Dr George Mountain to the coast. Experienced triathletes and anyone who wants to give it a shot can sign up for all three activities, but traditionally, it's the swim that's the attraction, with organisers expecting well over 500 entrants this year. Sunday is the big day for all the family, with visitors and locals invited to enter one of a series of 600m swims according to their age
bracket (eight classes for age 10 and up) or the 1200m Rettke Builders 'Splash for Cash' open race (from age 12 and up) which offers a $500 cash prize for the first male and first female onto the beach and an artwork by a local artist. Lots of prizes for places in the 600m series swims and major random draw prizes over the weekend including holiday packages in Tathra and up in the Snowy Mountains, a Raw Surfboard and a fantastic Mountain Bike. All the swims start from the historic Tathra Wharf, a remnant of the days when steamers carried goods and passengers along the coast. In use from 1862 - 1952, it was restored by the National Trust and local residents. A wide range of people have taken part in the event over the last 17 years, so entrants could find themselves lining up with seasoned ocean swimmers, AFL footballers and Commonwealth Games medallists, with competitors coming from around Australia on a regular basis. Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira River Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park
Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

Cobargo Folk Festival attracts international performers With many festivals and events struggling to attract sufficient numbers of paying customers, the award-winning Cobargo Folk Festival, happily, has the opposite problem: how to fit everyone into the Showground venue comfortably. That’s why they are advising people who want to attend next year to book in advance – at early bird prices. Festival organisers, the Yuin Folk Club, continues to work closely with the Cobargo Showground Trust and the Show Society to upgrade facilities at the site to meet yet another increase in attendees. A large section of the site has now been levelled, using the fill from road construction work at Dignams Creek, allowing space for many more campers. “As more people upgrade from tents to caravans and motor homes, space at the site has been at a premium,” said Festival Executive Director, Zena Armstrong. “So we are delighted that we now have quite a bit of extra camping space.” “The Yuin Folk Club will continue to work with the Show Society to make sure the site has all the amenities that we require for a successful festival,” she said. Now in its 23rd year, the 2018 Festival – now being held in the first weekend in March - will feature a number of legends from Australia and around the world as well as up-and-coming acts making their names in the folk and roots music scene. Andy Irvine, one of the most influential

performers in Irish and world music, will join other legends Australian/Scot Eric Bogle, US Bluegrass star Peter Rowan and Warumpi Band singer Neil Murray at the Festival. “We are thrilled that both Eric and Andy are appearing at the 2018 Festival. Eric’s contribution to Australian folk music is extraordinary. And we are delighted that Andy – a frequent visitor to Australia – has been able to make time in his busy schedule to play at Cobargo next year,” said Festival Artistic Director, Dave Crowden. “Andy’s influence on folk and world music over five decades is incalculable. His travels around the Balkans in the late 1960s brought the fascinating rhythms and harmonies of that music into the Celtic folk revival,” he said. “Now that the Festival will be held a week later than usual, we are more closely aligned to the other major festivals around the country and that makes us a more attractive option for touring performers,” he said. Annette's paintings can sometimes appear photorealistic, but on closer inspection the impressionists and mid20th century modernists clearly influence her work. Lorna Zhulan paints with both brushes and palette knife, producing two different styles of paintings. The brushwork paintings tend to be more realistic and smoothly finished while the palette knife works can tend towards the more abstract with a rougher more textured finish. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The ABC Cheese Factory is located in the heart of historical Central Tilba and is the manufacturing base of Tilba Real Dairy. The ABC Cheese Factory was established in 1891 and was the first Cheese Co-op in NSW. Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, nestled between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet, with Gulaga Mountain (Mt.
