From The Editor Welcome to the January/February Far South Coast iMag. The warm weather has finally arrived, and it feels like summer is here at last. Well it does as I write this in early December! Whether you're a regular to the Far South Coast or you're experiencing the region for the first time, I'm sure you'll be inspired by such a wonderful place. Nature really is unspoilt here, and although the traffic is sometimes a little crazy, it's worth being here over summer, or any time of year for that matter.
Information supplied by others for this magazine is published in good faith. Whilst every endeavour has been made to ensure absolute accuracy of this information, the Publishers cannot be held responsible for any consequences resulting from omissions or inadvertent errors contained herein.
New Year's Eve has a couple of great family options - the Tathra Pig Races (yep, you read that right - pig races!) and the family friendly concert and fireworks at Merimbula’s Ford Park. To really get to appreciate the diversity of the region, National Parks & Wildlife Service have a great Discovery Program running in January. Snorkelling, kayaking, 4WD tours and searching for bush tucker are just some of the activities on offer. Read more on page 27. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre also has a great holiday program, with rock pool rambles, snorkelling, and watching fish feeding at the Centre next to the Wharf at Eden. Find the dates and times on pages 10 - 11. The Tathra Wharf To Waves Weekend, running for the 18th time in 2019, has been an enormous fundraiser for the Tathra community. Ocean swims, mountain bike rides and fun runs attract participants from around Australia, including AFL footballers, Commonwealth Games medallists, triathletes and the very friendly locals. Find out more on page 37. See our What's On pages (p53 -55) for all the details. Stay up to date by keeping your iMag handy, download it from our website at www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au and our Facebook page - Far South Coast iMag.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

& surrounds
the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Lifeline: Eden and the Sydney to Hobart yacht race One of the ultimate ocean racing experiences for sailors across the world is the annual Sydney - Hobart yacht race. Beginning in Sydney on Boxing Day (26th December), sailors face some of the toughest ocean and weather conditions as they travel down the south-eastern Australian coastline, across Bass Strait, then south along the east coast of Tasmania before heading up into the River Derwent, finishing at Hobart. Originally arranged as an informal cruise by a handful yachts down the east coast in 1945, a passing remark by a British naval officer, Captain John Illingworth, saw it evolve into a competition. Nine yachts entered the race, the first crossing the line after 6 days, 14 hours and 22 minutes. In 2017, a new race record was achieved by maxi yacht Comanche, finishing in 1 day, 9 hours and 15 minutes.
Since the Sydney-Hobart’s inception, Eden has played an important role for competitors. Before and after the race, Eden’s relatively safe harbour is a place to rest and replenish stores. During the race however, Eden is the last safe place for yachts to retire before crossing the Bass Strait, and the town’s facilities become much more important to injured sailors and damaged vessels.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797; a marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafés, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop

Broadwater Oysters - don't go home without them Like fine wine and cheese, oysters have a distinct flavour depending on where they are grown. Oysters from Pambula Lake have a smooth, subtle flavour influenced by the water they are produced in. The clean, clear waters of Pambula Lake are a combination of fresh water moving down the Pambula and Yowaka Rivers, and tidal exchange from the Pacific Ocean - perfect for the production of the finest Sydney Rock Oysters. Broadwater Oysters have been farming and processing the native Sydney Rock Oysters in Pambula Lake for over 20 years. You can visit Broadwater Oysters on the Pambula Lake foreshore – a working oyster farm supplying award winning oysters. Talk to farmers about how oysters are grown and watch oysters being freshly opened for local restaurants and the general public. Situated between Pambula and Eden, turn off
the Princes Highway onto Landing Road and head down to the lake foreshore. Broadwater Oysters offer fresh award winning oysters and a selection of other seafood to eat ‘natural’ by the lake or enjoy at home. Broadwater Oysters are happy to pack opened and unopened oysters to travel, so you take a little bit of the Sapphire Coast home with you. www.broadwateroysters.com.au

VISITOR INFORMATION Beach Street, Merimbula Ph: 02 6495 1129
Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the
region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Explore Brogo Dam with Brogo Wilderness Canoes
Summer is a great time to explore the inland waterways of the Far South Coast - the days are fine, the water is warm and with any luck the native bass will be biting. One of the best locations to go canoeing is the Brogo Dam, with its extensive catchment running back into the magnificent Brogo Wilderness area. The waterways are pristine, and the peaceful backwaters are a haven for local native bird life and fauna - sea eagles, swooping azure kingfishers, water dragons, goannas and shy echidnas have all been observed on and around the Dam. To really experience the beauty nner unless you can of the Brogo Dam, you need to
get out on the water. Dave and Sue at Brogo Wilderness Canoes hire fully equipped canoes for a half day or full day, allowing plenty of time to check out the Dam. Their canoes are safe, stable “Canadians”, and all safety gear, maps and instructions are provided. For tranquillity and beauty it’s hard to beat - you can explore forest gullies, swim, bring a picnic lunch and stop wherever you desire. A 2 - 3 person canoe with all safety gear costs just $25 per adult and $13 per child for a half day. For bookings contact Dave or Sue on (02) 6492 7328. www.brogocanoes.com.au

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley, and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

On Saturday, January 19th, there’s the Tathra Beachside 2km fun run on Tathra Beach, while mountain bike enthusiasts will also be in action with a 30km ‘Bega to the Beach’ ride from Bega across Dr George Mountain to the coast. Experienced triathletes or anyone who wants to give it a shot can sign up for all three activities, but in previous years it's the swim that's the attraction. Sunday is the big day for all the family, with visitors and locals invited to enter one of a series of 600m swims according to their age bracket (eight classes for age 10 and up) or the
1200m Harris Plumbing 'Splash for Cash' open race (from age 12 and up) which offers a $500 cash prize for the first male and first female onto the beach and an artwork by a local artist. Lots of prizes for places in the 600m series swims and major random draw prizes over the weekend including holiday packages in Tathra and up in the Snowy Mountains, a Raw Surfboard and a fantastic Mountain Bike. All the swims start from the historic Tathra Wharf, a remnant of the days when steamers carried goods and passengers along the coast. In use from 1862 - 1952, it was restored by the National Trust and local residents. Entrants may find themselves lining up with seasoned ocean swimmers, AFL footballers and Commonwealth Games medallists, with competitors coming from around Australia on a regular basis. Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Say hello to the friendly gnomes Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park
Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.
38
The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.
Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.
Develop your practice at Bikram Yoga Sapphire Coast More and more people are making the trip to Cobargo to attend hot yoga classes at Bikram Yoga Sapphire Coast, the little studio behind the red door. Studio owner Amrei Marden has more than 20 years experience in yoga practice and teaching, and people of all ages attend her classes to improve flexibility, balance, strength and overall fitness. “The beginner’s course is suitable for all ages and all bodies,” Amrei said. “Some are initially intimidated by the thought of the heat but it’s just like doing yoga on a warm summer’s day in Australia. People acclimatise quickly and then they start to enjoy the warmth.” A community of friendly regulars has built up around the studio, which has daily classes. Several students travel regularly from Narooma and Bega. “A number of students train several times a week, others less often – it’s an individual choice,” said Amrei.
“Students say that yoga helps them to manage blood pressure, arthritis, depression and anxiety. “It’s great to see that more men are finding this yoga helpful. Many have hard, physical jobs and use the yoga to recover from work injuries, ease pain and help relaxation. There’s value in it for everyone.” Amrei also runs weekend yoga retreats, which are popular with those who want to add yoga to their holiday plans. Cobargo Folk Festival welcomes old hands and newbies Every year we have a lot of first timers at the Cobargo Festival, which is on at the Cobargo Show Ground on the first week in March. Not only are they first timers in Cobargo, many of them have never been to a folk festival and, unless they’re with friends who’ve been before, they are often not sure what to expect, what to see and where to go. For those people, and others, here’s a quick guide. It was Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong who said: “all music is folk music. I’ve never seen a horse sing a song”. Modern folk festivals deliver a wide range of musical genres, as well as dance and spoken word. They take in traditional Australian bush music and poetry, Bluegrass and American Old Time Music, traditional Celtic music, virtuoso musicians, world class singer song writers, young electric folk bands, world music, from places like South America and the Balkans, comedy, musical theatre and a wide range of dance styles. Best thing to do when you arrive at the Festival and get your wristband is take half an hour to read through the program. As well as artist's biographies and a grid of when and where they’re on (there’s a great site map to help), there is a wealth of information about the festival organisation, special events, emergency procedures and rules and regulations that the festival has to abide by. You’ll see information on the food and other stalls on site, and where you can buy a beer or a glass of wine to have with your meals. Our festival is very relaxed and it’s perfectly okay to go and stand at the back of a venue to see
40
whether you like a performer or not. It’s also ok to just stay for a few songs or tunes and then – at a break in the music – leave to see something else. If you’re new to the festival, it’s perfectly acceptable to ask volunteers or other patrons “what’s good”. Of course that’s a subjective thing and people have different tastes but it’s a good way to meet new people. If you’re in the festival bar, don’t be surprised if there’s a spontaneous outbreak of music – we call it a “Session” and often you’ll see some of the Festival headliners joining in. Folk Festivals are places to learn. On Saturday and Sunday you’ll see listed a wide range of workshops where performers teach or talk about their skills and give tips and tricks for beginners and intermediate players. Also look out for themed concerts and special events. Each year we put all the best guitarists together for a concert and, separately, the best fiddle players – all from different musical genres. This year (2019) we’ve worked together with the Showground Trust and the Show Society to try to improve facilities at the site, including more camping space – which has been at a premium in recent years. To make the site more comfortable, we will be placing a limit on the number of camping tickets and also restricting the showground arena to tents and small campers and vans. Details of our 2019 performers and how to buy tickets are on our website www.cobargofolkfestival.com Get in early and enjoy the fun.

Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit, Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top ecotourism destination. You can take a tour of the island and learn about its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. It's also a great place to go bike riding, with tracks around town that are perfect for kids to practice their riding skills on. If you're a hard-core mountain bike enthusiast, there are mountain bike tracks and sealed roads aplenty to check out, including some great tracks through local state forests and national parks. If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafés, restaurants and shops to experience.

For instance, large numbers of seals stay at Montague Island over the summer months, making it a perfect place for snorkelling or diving. Australian Fur Seals are very friendly towards those exploring their underwater world, and love to play all around you as they demonstrate just what poetry in motion really means. It's also expected to be a great Kingfish season, with fish starting to bite early; good catches of reef fish have also been made this year. You can see them on an evening tour between
September and January. Narooma Charters run fishing trips both morning and afternoon, and you can expect to make some remarkable catches. Tours to Montague Island are a must for visitors and locals alike. The penguins are a great sight as they arrive on the island at dusk each evening; you'll see them on the evening Penguin tour. THE RAG TAG FLEET 5 June - 4th February 2018, Eden Killer Whale Museum, Eden Celebrating the 75th anniversary of what must be one of the most unusual fleets to take to the water during World War 2, The Rag Tag Fleet is a fascinating exhibition exploring a little-known part of naval history. The US Navy, suffering defeats in the Phillipines, decided to focus on driving the Japanese out of New Guinea. The only problem was, they didn't have any ships or sailors available. The Mission X team was charged with scouring Australia's eastern seaboard and New Zealand for suitable attack vessels. Known offiicially as the US Small Ships Section, but nick-named the Rag Tag Fleet by Mission X team
member Ladislaw Reday, vessels included wooden trawlers, scows, sailing craft and even a paddle-wheeler. The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. C
The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Original Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops
The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the 1850s gold rush theme park Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won numerous awards at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards including the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Construction of a replacement bridge is planned to commence in 2019. Celebrate summer with fresh oysters from the Oyster Shed There’s something about being on or near the water that lends peace and tranquillity to the spirit, and Batemans Bay is blessed to have such easy access to the beautiful Clyde River, running right through the township. If you’re down around the water’s edge, make sure you drop in to see Jade and Enola at The Oyster Shed, the last shed on Wray St, located on the northwestern bank of the Clyde River. They sell fresh Sydney rock oysters and pacific oysters grown organically from their own leases, in one of the cleanest rivers in New South Wales. The Oyster Shed’s oysters have an excellent flavour and are a highly nutritious food, being
rich in omega 3 oils, iron, zinc, iodine, vitamins A, B complex and C. These days, you can be much more adventurous in the kitchen with oysters than just serving the old standards of oysters kilpatrick or mornay. Just ask Enola - she’s got lots of recipes for a more contemporary approach. The Oyster Shed is also a great spot for a picnic. All you need is the picnic rug, a bottle of wine and some freshly-opened oysters, then relax and enjoy the spectacular Clyde River views. And to keep the holiday vibe going, take some oysters home with you! www.oystershed.com.au
