From The Editor Welcome to the July/August edition of the Far South Coast iMag. It's been a pretty dry winter so far, following on from a pretty dry autumn, and things aren't quite as green as usual. With minimal feed left on the coast, hay is being trucked in from South Australia and Victoria to feed hungry livestock. Do take extra care on the roads, as the increased number of trucks, wildlife feeding on roadsides and the odd spot of ice means you really need to concentrate, especially at night. There are lots of things to do during the colder months on the coast. Many towns have their own museums, with wonderful displays featuring pieces from years gone by. The Eden Killer Whale Museum currently has two wonderful exhibitions that focus on times past - Sesqui and A potpourri of local life. Head over to page 10 for more information.
Our Collectables Trail is perfect for those who love antiques and all things old - with businesses from Eden to Mogo, we've got it covered. You'll find the Collectables Trail on page 2. The Far South Coast is well known for its vibrant artistic culture, and you'll find the works of renowned artists and as well as beautiful craft pieces at the many galleries located around the region. Check out our Art Trail listing on pages 38 - 39 for exhibition details of the area's best galleries.
The iMag will help you plan all your holiday fun - keep it handy or download it onto your phone or tablet from our Facebook page - Far South Coast iMag.

Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953
George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in
& surrounds
the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Sesqui: an event to remember at Eden Killer Whale Museum Over nine days in March 1993, the town of Eden was transformed into a bustling place of festivity and community celebrations to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the town’s proclamation. Driven by the Eden Killer Whale Museum’s volunteer management committee, it remains as one of Eden’s largest community events of all time. Businesses and community organisations banded together to offer a full program of events to commemorate Eden’s Sesquicentenary. They ranged from old time dances and stockman rides, art and craft exhibitions to special bowls, golf and bingo events. Tall ships, bus tours and walks across Eden contributed to the wide array of activities enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
Above: The tall ship Bounty makes an impressive sight in Snug Cove with Mt Imlay watching over in the background. Locals and visitors took up the rare opportunity of cruising Twofold Bay aboard both the magnificent Bounty and the Lady Nelson during Eden’s 1993 Sesqui celebrations. Courtesy Rosalind Butt.
10
Former residents travelled from across the country especially to share their memories and celebrate the hopes for the future. It is now 175 years since Eden was proclaimed a town, and 25 years since Eden’s biggest community celebrations unfolded. This exhibition from Eden Killer Whale Museum invites you to be a part of the celebrations that once were. Alongside Sesqui is another new exhibition, A potpourri of local life, which brings together fabulous historical photographs combined with objects from various time periods. It is a wonderful platform to reminisce on how people dressed, shopped, played and worked, and share with young ones how life used to be. Eden Killer Whale Museum is a multi-award winning destination that showcases an impressive wide range of cultural histories associated with this small coastal town of the Sapphire Coast. Sesqui: 6 February 2018 – 10 March 2019 A potpourri of local life: February – 23 September 2018

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake
The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.
12
Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the
region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley, and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

StunningTathra Things to See & Do Get up close to birds at On The Perch's walk-through aviaries Try mountain biking on the trails around Tathra Check out all the cafes and restaurants in town Enjoy a walk or bike ride from Tathra to the Bega River at Mogareeka
With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during an East Coast Low that hit the region in 2016, but with repairs completed, the Wharf has resumed its role as a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views. Extensive renovations at The Tathra Hotel have now been completed, and luckily, the Hotel escaped the March bushfire unharmed. The Hotel features a micro-brewery, bistro, live music - and no poker machines.
On The Perch - immerse yourself in nature The Award Winning On the Perch Bird Park is one of the Sapphire Coast's ‘must do’ attractions. With about 90 species of birds on display, the focus is conservation and education. Visitors can enjoy a total of eight exhibits which includes four walk-in aviaries that are perfect for budding photographers or those that just like to sit amongst the birds. Combine your visit with our Meet the Keeper talks at 11am and 1pm to learn even more! The Metallic Starling is very rare in Australian zoos but you can see a small colony at On the Perch Bird Park. Image by Zachery McKenzie.
Immerse yourself in nature! Enjoy a coffee in ‘Brood Café’, the café with a difference and The Bower Gift Shop offers a range of gifts and local art. We are open Thursday - Sunday over winter from 10am - 3pm, but please check our website or facebook page for updated information. Trading hours may vary due to adverse weather conditions. The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Camping is available along the way or stay in comfort in the Green Cape Lightkeepers Cottages. Park use fees apply. 28

The Tathra region is bouncing back strongly from the recent bushfires. Whilst the fires were devastating to so many in the community, fortunately the tourism infrastructure remained largely untouched. The best way to support our community is to visit; for a day, for a night (or a week!), for a meal, for a surf‌ The pristine beaches and national parks, the historic wharf and refurbished hotel, surrounding estuaries, famous family fishing spots, and of course the community, look forward to seeing you. #TATHRASTRONG VISITTATHRA.COM.AU www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.
30
The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.
Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.
Twig & Feather – Ignite your Senses Design, imagine and create the comforts of home. If you are looking for a shopping experience that is a little bit different, Twig & Feather in Cobargo is the place to go. Stepping through the doors of Twig & Feather, your senses are instantly tantalised by the sweet fragrances wafting through the store. Monique, the owner, makes all of the natural wax candles and fragrance diffusers on the premises, and with tempting fragrances such as Thyme and Olive Leaf, Black Raspberry and Vanilla and Australian Bush, there is sure to be
your next favourite scent amongst them. Monique has also pulled together a unique collection of homewares, kitchenware, gardenware, stationery and gifts – all styled to give you ideas on how you can create your own look at home. And if you are not sure, feel free to ask for advice. Feel inspired at Twig & Feather whether you're looking for that perfect gift, or inspiration for your modern farmhouse, retro, coastal or contemporary interior - there is something to suit any home or space. www.twigandfeather.com.au

Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Original Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops
The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the 1850s gold rush theme park Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won numerous awards at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards including the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.
There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Construction of a replacement bridge is planned to commence in 2019. Now a thriving regional centre and major
tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great National Parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
