Adventure Eden in
Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953
George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in
& surrounds
the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Sesqui: an event to remember at Eden Killer Whale Museum Over nine days in March 1993, the town of Eden was transformed into a bustling place of festivity and community celebrations to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the town’s proclamation. Driven by the Eden Killer Whale Museum’s volunteer management committee, it remains as one of Eden’s largest community events of all time. Businesses and community organisations banded together to offer a full program of events to commemorate Eden’s Sesquicentenary. They ranged from old time dances and stockman rides, art and craft exhibitions to special bowls, golf and bingo events. Tall ships, bus tours and walks across Eden contributed to the wide array of activities enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
Above: The tall ship Bounty makes an impressive sight in Snug Cove with Mt Imlay watching over in the background. Locals and visitors took up the rare opportunity of cruising Twofold Bay aboard both the magnificent Bounty and the Lady Nelson during Eden’s 1993 Sesqui celebrations. Courtesy Rosalind Butt.

Former residents travelled from across the country especially to share their memories and celebrate the hopes for the future. It is now 175 years since Eden was proclaimed a town, and 25 years since Eden’s biggest community celebrations unfolded. This exhibition from Eden Killer Whale Museum invites you to be a part of the celebrations that once were. Alongside Sesqui is another new exhibition, A potpourri of local life, which brings together fabulous historical photographs combined with objects from various time periods. It is a wonderful platform to reminisce on how people dressed, shopped, played and worked, and share with young ones how life used to be. Eden Killer Whale Museum is a multi-award winning destination that showcases an impressive wide range of cultural histories associated with this small coastal town of the Sapphire Coast. Sesqui: 6 February 2018 – 10 March 2019 A potpourri of local life: February – 23 September 2018

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake
The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.
12
www.monthlyimag.com.au
Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the
region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the
24

case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre is a wonderful reproduction of the original butter factory that was situated on the site in the early 20th century and has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's. It provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. For those interested in the history of Bega, the Museum in the heart of the town houses a collection of photos, family histories, farm implements and machinery. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. There's a fantastic walking track that goes all the way from the sporting fields near the Bridge over to the Bega River. The track then follows the Old Racecourse.
Explore Brogo Dam with Brogo Wilderness Canoes Summer is a great time to explore the inland waterways of the Far South Coast - the days are fine, the water is warm and with any luck the nativ bass will be biting. One of the best locations to go canoeing is the Brogo Dam, with its extensive catchment running back into the magnificent Brogo Wilderness area. The waterways are pristine, and the peaceful backwaters are a haven for local native bird life and fauna - sea eagles, swooping azure kingfishers, water dragons, goannas and shy echidnas have all been observed on and around the Dam. To really experience the beauty of the Brogo Dam, you need to get out on the water.
Dave and Sue at Brogo Wilderness Canoes hire fully equipped canoes for a half day or full day, allowing plenty of time to check out the Dam. Their canoes are safe, stable “Canadians”, and all safety gear, maps and instructions are provided. For tranquillity and beauty it’s hard to beat - you can explore forest gullies, swim, bring a picnic lunch and stop wherever you desire. A 2 - 3 person canoe with all safety gear costs just $25 per adult and $13 per child for a half day. For bookings contact Dave or Sue on (02) 6492 7328. www.brogocanoes.com.au

16 March – 28 April: Moving Histories Future Projections Moving Histories // Future Projections brings together some of Australia’s leading female contemporary artists working across screen based media. The artists in Moving Histories // Future Projections approach their subject matter in a variety of ways – they turn the camera on themselves, re-stage historical events or re-imagine alternative futures through speculative accounts of the past. Yet through repetition, montage and mimicry, they all explore a space where time folds in on itself and back again and each looks back while also moving forward. See page 54 for BVRG opening times.

StunningTathra Things to See & Do Get up close to birds at On The Perch's walk-through aviaries Try mountain biking on the trails around Tathra Check out all the cafes and restaurants in town Enjoy a walk or bike ride from Tathra to the Bega River at Mogareeka
With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during an East Coast Low that hit the region in 2016, but with repairs completed, the Wharf has resumed its role as a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.
28
www.monthlyimag.com.au
There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views. Extensive renovations at The Tathra Hotel have now been completed with the Hotel reopening in mid- November. The Hotel features a micro-brewery, a bistro that's open for lunch and dinner, live music - and no poker machines.
Walk the scenic Kangarutha Track this autumn If you’re keen to do some bush-walking, try the 9km Kangarutha Track, along the spectacular northern shores of Bournda National Park. You can begin at the northern end of the track at Kianinny Bay near Tathra, or at the Wallagoot Lake Boat Club at the southern end (Park use fees apply if parking at Turingal Head). The track takes in the rugged coastline, with many small sandy or pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs, but not many options for swimming. If the full 9km, 5 hour walk is a bit much, you can walk a section of the track, for example, a 1.7km walk from Kianinny Bay to Boulder Bay, or a 1.8km walk from Wallagoot Lake Boat Club to Turingal Head, or walk half way to White Rock Quarry. Another option is Turingal Head to Games Bay, where the track passes through a secluded old dairy farm area. This 5km return walk is rated as medium, and takes approximately 2 hours.

Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira River Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park
Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.
30
www.monthlyimag.com.au
The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.
Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.
Take your time in Bangles Gallery For 43 years the Bangles philosophy has been based on quality, variety, affordable prices and great customer service. The current owner, Derwood, has been involved with Bangles Gallery for 33 years, which is quite an achievement. Located in a magnificent two-storey timber building in the centre of Cobargo, pottery is at the heart of Bangles Gallery. With a wood fire keeping the shop cosy and warm, Bangles is perfect to wander through on a chilly day....or in any kind of weather. A talented pool of craftspeople supply Bangles with a selection of traditional and modern Australian-made pottery, with a small amount sourced from overseas.
There's an extensive range of cookware that is both beautiful and functional, vases, pots, and elegant decorative pieces. Bangles is not just about pottery though. A more diverse range of products has been introduced, including glassware, ironware, leadlight lamps and beautifully crafted cutlery sets. Reflecting the Bangles philosophy, these pieces all represent great value for money without sacrificing quality. Browse through the well-stocked shop to find the perfect gift or something special for yourself. Bangles Gallery, Princes Highway, Cobargo. Phone 6493 6421

Sculptors Line up for Sculpture Bermagui With every year Sculpture Bermagui gets more and more exciting. This year's event, running from March 9th - 18th, is the 12th annual exhibition event in Bermagui. In 2018 the line-up of exhibitors has increased to over 110 sculptures, with entries from as far afield as Thailand and works being especially created for the Bermagui exhibition. Multi-disciplinary artist, Giles Ryder, who practices in Thailand and Cambodia will be exhibiting “Golden Space Doughnut”, a sculpture created from Perspex, mixed media and enamel. Highlighting the artist’s creative view of the world, it will be one of the many highlights of this year’s Sculpture Bermagui. Created especially for Sculpture Bermagui, John Blay, Amanda Stuart and Jane Ulman’s work “Les St Hill and the Tin Canoe”, comes to Bermagui after being shown at Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney to great acclaim. A giant fish sculpture by Tobias Bennett, “Reel Big Fish“, will be among the wonderful sculptures at Dickinson Point and over 60 smaller sculptures will be on display in the
Bermagui Community Centre. Businesses in the region are showing great support for what is an important part of the regional calendar, with Bermagui Country Club becoming one of a new group of supporters and sponsors. A programme packed full of interesting and entertaining events including torchlight tours, artist talks and music throughout the ten days of the exhibition will culminate in the closing ceremony with works featuring fire becoming more numerous and popular, lighting up the headland. Join in the Easter Gold Rush at Montreal Goldfield A guided tour through the Montreal Goldfield near Bermagui is a unique experience for all ages and should not be missed. The goldfield is an intact example of alluvial diggings in the 1880s and the only goldfield in Australia that goes into the sea. Today, trained guides tell you the story of the Montreal goldfield and the Great Unsolved Bermagui Mystery as you wander along pathways and boardwalks through the beautiful natural bush that now covers the diggings. All shafts are fenced off or covered so you can look down them in safety. It is so peaceful now; a far cry from the chaotic days of the gold rush era. This Easter, take a tour of the Goldfield and join in the Easter Gold Rush. Learn how to pan for gold; weigh your “gold” on gold scales and trade your “gold” for an Easter Treat (included as part of Easter Saturday and
Sunday's 2pm tour cost). Entry is by guided tour only. Tours leave at 2pm daily from the Heritage Centre, Wallaga Lake Rd. 7 km north of Bermagui, and take just over an hour. Entry is $7.50 adults, $5 children or $25 for a family with 2 adults and 2 or more children. Anne also stocks bamboo clothing and undergarments, gym and yoga gear which are antibacterial and amazingly soft to wear. Why not give a gift voucher for a handmade hat, a elephant grass market basket or a sturdy canvas men’s outdoor “Harrison Ford” hat. We have the summer covered too, stocking an array of sun hats that are all UV and very affordable. Drop by and say hi!!! Check out Hatsavvy on Facebook & Instagram.

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has maintained its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned’stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Reva at Tilba has divine jewellery from Australia and around the world, and Gulaga Gallery has hemp and bamboo clothing.

Gulaga Gallery and Bookstore is named after beautiful Gulaga Mountain which towers up behind Tilba. It was built at the end of the 19th Century from local eucalyptus timbers, and since 1991, this varied and enchanting shop has been owned by Shanti and Sol Ramana-Clarke. Sol has developed a unique style of jewellery using sterling silver and gold-filled wire to mount a huge variety of semi-precious stones. He might suggest you “pick a stone that jumps out at you” and watch him mount it into a pendant, ring ...or whatever... Sol also produced the widely acclaimed documentary film “The Hemp Solution - For A Sustainable Future”, so naturally you’ll find a full range of environmentally friendly hemp clothes, hemp seed oil and cosmetics. Shanti’s passion for colour and style is reflected in the varied range of women's clothing in luxuriously soft bamboo and other natural fibres. Shanti and Sol’s love of universal spirituality is expressed in their range of interesting and insightful books & DVD’s, cards, and inspirational

Yet through repetition, montage and mimicry, they all explore a space where time folds in on itself and back again and each looks back while also moving forward. Collectively and individually they act as historians, archivists and archaeologists - excavating historical materials, digging through archives and channelling the past to make new connections across time and space. Breathtaking Batemans Bay Things to See & Do Explore the Clyde River by boat, houseboat or kayak Taste some fresh oysters at the Oyster Shed Enjoy the beaches nearby Visit the many National Parks in the region, from hinterland forests to coastal gems VISITOR INFORMATION Princes Hwy, Batemans Bay Ph: 1800 802 528 info@eurobodalla.com.au
Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans
Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great National Parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Clyde River Oysters at the Oyster Shed There’s something about being on or near the water that lends peace and tranquillity to the spirit, and Batemans Bay is blessed to have such easy access to the beautiful Clyde River, running right through the township. If you’re down around the water’s edge, make sure you drop in to see Jade and Enola at The Oyster Shed, the last shed on Wray St, located on the northwestern bank of the Clyde River. They sell fresh Sydney rock oysters grown “organically” from their own leases, in one of the cleanest rivers in New South Wales. The Oyster Shed’s oysters have an excellent flavour, and are a highly nutritious food, being rich in omega 3 oils, iron, zinc, iodine, vitamins
A, B complex and C. These days, you can be much more adventurous in the kitchen with oysters than just serving the old standards of oysters kilpatrick or mornay. Just ask Enola - she’s got lots of recipes for a more contemporary approach. The Oyster Shed is also a great spot for a picnic. All you need is the picnic rug, a bottle of wine and some freshly-opened oysters, then relax and enjoy the spectacular Clyde River views. And to keep the holiday vibe going, take some oysters home with you! www.oystershed.com.au
