March Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - we hope you enjoy your time in this fantastic region. As always in this busy region, there's plenty of choices if you're looking for things to do. Who said nothing much happens in the country?! This month we're featuring Bermagui, where heaps of major events are happening over the next six weeks. First up is the truly amazing 'Sculpture on the Edge', running from March 5th - 14th. This year there's sculptures large and small, a Symposium, tours and a Festival Club. All these events are focussed on sculpture that's thoughtprovoking, moving and sometimes controversial - don't miss it! Saturday 13th March will be anything but unlucky for those in Bermagui with the 13th Annual Bermagui Seaside Fair. This fantastic community celebration has everything from street parades, art exhibitions, live concerts and fireworks, and will be fun for the whole family.
Contents Coming up at Easter is the Four Winds Festival, named by Limelight magazine as one of the top six festivals in Australia. In addition to featuring international musicians, Four Winds also highlights the talented bunch of diverse performers who live in the region. Also at Easter is the wonderful Tilba Easter Festival where the famous Bate St is closed and the whole village comes out to play - and everyone's invited to join in. Keep your Imag handy as you travel around the region or check out our website at www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Do drive carefully, especially at night there's lots of wildlife around. Enjoy!

George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling
Station, the longest operating shorebased whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. To celebrate the significance of whales to the town, Eden holds its Whale Festival in November each year. The historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay, in the heyday of the whaling industry. The Seahorse Inn, also built in 1843, has been beautifully

Greening the Silver City: seeds of bush regeneration Greening the Silver City: seeds of bush regeneration is a travelling exhibition from Sydney's Powerhouse Museum and is at the Eden Killer Whale Museum from February 6th - April 26th. The exhibition explores the collaboration between community and industry in creating one of the first bush regeneration sites in Australia. When thinking of Broken Hill the mind conjures up images of a mining town on the edge of the outback. Not many people know of its significance in environmental history as the site of one of Australia’s earliest green actions.
EDEN
In 1936, the Barrier Field Naturalists Club led by Albert Morris, enlisted the help of a mining company, and through the process of native revegetation defeated the drifts of sand that were swallowing the outskirts of the famous mining town. Albert's wife Margaret Morris continued his work after Albert's death in 1939, and this bush revegetation helped make Broken Hill a livable city. The Broken Hill revegetation site was the first example of successful bush regeneration in its broadest sense within Australia. It improved the

standard of living of residents as well as conserving plant and animal biodiversity. The regeneration reserves are now National-Trust listed. Morris also photographed the flowers and landscape of the surrounding area. These black and white slides were hand coloured by his wife Margaret and are featured in the touring exhibition. Greening the Silver City: seeds of bush regeneration is a regional touring exhibition developed by the Powerhouse Museum in collaboration with Broken Hill City Council and community and supported by Movable Heritage NSW.

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation.

There are a range of activities and attractions in Merimbula, including deep-sea fishing, whale-watching, snorkelling, surfing, cycling, scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Bega Valley with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are still visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early history.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music.

Sapphire Coast Music Society brings Melba's music to Wolumla The lives and careers of Dame Nellie Melba and flute virtuoso, John Lemmone ran parallel, meeting in Melbourne in 1884 and first performing together in London in 1894. As well as having their own solo careers, over the years these two great friends toured in Australia, Europe and elsewhere and created an international reputation for performances, which attracted crowds of dedicated followers and music lovers at each performance. Soprano Louise Page, flautist Virginia Taylor and pianist Phillipa Candy unite to bring the happy music of this era to
life in a concert presented by Sapphire Music Society on Sunday 28 March 2.30pm at Wolumla Hall, Wolumla. This concert will feature pieces with which Lemmone and Melba dazzled their audiences; the Mad Scene from Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Handel’s Sweet Bird and Lo! Here the Gentle Lark, for which Lemmone wrote the flute obbligato and which Melba considered very much her own. Ms Page’s compelling and exciting performances of these works are accompanied by the fast-flight brilliant technique of Virginia Taylor and the sensitive playing of Phillipa Candy.
In addition to some of the muchloved showy repertoire of this era, the audience will also be enticed into the seductively ethereal world of SaintSaens’s Une Flute Invisible and By the Waters of Minnetonka, travelling to a bygone but not forgotten era of excellence in Australian music history. Tickets cost $25 adult, $18 members and $21 concession and are available at Magpie Music, Bega, Booktique, Merimbula and at the door. For further details and membership information contact Pat Reilly on 6495 9708 or Olwen Morris on 6495 0232. Discover local history at Merimbula's Old School Museum One of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the wonderful Old School Museum. A wonderful facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to spend some time. Originally built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers, squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. It provides a secure site for displays of local history such as stories of: • Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and lost it by investing in the Pambula goldfields; • the Wharf and the Illawarra Steamship Company that provided transport for people and goods up and down the coast before roads were built; • Syms Covington, who travelled with Charles Darwin in the Beagle and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant; • gold and pyrophyllite mining around Pambula; • the wrecking of the William Dawes and the SS Merimbula; • mutiny and murder on an American whaling ship, and many more. The Museum is situated in Main Street (opposite the RSL), Merimbula and is open from 1.30pm – 4.00pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (closed Christmas Day). Entry is only $3 and children are welcome at noevery cost. For Websites to suit more business information, and phone 6495 4844. budget

Enjoy native animals at Potoroo Palace Located on the Princes Highway about ten minutes north of Merimbula is Potoroo Palace, a notfor-profit organisation passionate about Australia's native animals and caring for the Earth. Its aims are to improve the habitats and wellbeing of the native animals in its care, to promote public awareness of their plight in the wild and to educate the community about the importance of the conservation of unique Australian native animals and plants. At Potoroo Palace you can savour the rare opportunity to see a koala, wander amongst the kangaroos, touch a snake, stroll through the cooling mist of the walk-through aviary, go for a ride on the mini train or have lunch and a great coffee at the Blue Wren Café. Many of the animals at the sanctuary are native to Merimbula, including Long-nosed Potoroos, Macropods such as a Swamp Wallaby and Eastern Grey Kangaroos, along with Bare nosed Wombats. Short-beaked Echidnas are found in the Bega Valley, sometimes even entering backyards. Emus and even Dingoes can be found in the surrounding area.
Koalas and Long-nosed Potoroos are very rare here now, but were once abundant. Potoroo Palace’s newest attraction is Breakfast With The Birds, held on the second Saturday of each month at 7.30am (negotiable). Bookings are essential. A gourmet breakfast will be served in the barbeque area, while you watch the birds who visit as well as the ones who live there. You will be able to see what goes on behind the scenes before the sanctuary opens each day. You will see the keepers doing their rounds. You may even hear the amazing dingo chorus with four dingoes howling in harmony. Dinners are also held at the Blue Wren Café on the fourth Friday of each month to raise funds for the Sanctuary. Delicious food and beautiful music have been the key to the success of these evening functions. Each month there is a Curry Night, and local musicians provide fantastic music each evening. Potoroo Palace is at 2372 Princes Highway, Yellowpinch, just north of Merimbula. Phone 6494 9053, or visit the website: www.potoroopalace.com

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting some $50m of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a
must for anyone new to the region; the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. The Heritage Centre is also home to
the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region.

Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. The Wharf also has tourist information on Tathra and surrounding areas. Every January, the Tathra Wharf to Waves Beach Swim is held to raise funds for various community groups. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters,
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay, and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. If you’re keen to play some golf or tennis, try the Tathra Beach Country Club.

HEADLAND FISHING ADVENTURES Merimbula - NSW
March along the South Coast is picture perfect with warm days, warmer water temperatures and best of all, heaps of fish! Estuaries: What a time of year to fish all estuaries along the coast. Flathead and whiting are the two species that most anglers will target with soft plastics up to 100mm, live poddy mullet and fresh prawns ideal for flathead. For whiting live bass yabbies, squirt worms and beach worms are gun baits. Concentrate your efforts around shallow sand flats on a rising tide. All estuaries along the coast will produce the goods, with Wagonga Inlet, Merimbula and Wonboyn Lakes being the pick of them. Offshore: With the water temperature anywhere from 21-24 degrees the pelagic action will be in full swing. Marlin have been around in good numbers and this will continue through March. Trolling skirted lures and slow trolling live baits like striped tuna and slimy mackerel are the gun methods at present. There’s still been sporadic captures of yellowfin tuna to 40kg too, so live baiting and cubing down a burley trail could pay dividends. Inshore, snapper, morwong, flathead, and long finned perch will be available on most South Coast reefs. Expect a few kingfish around also with jigs and livebait the best way to tempt them. Montague Island just off Narooma has been fishing well for the kingies as have the reefs out the front of Moruya. Rocks: Salmon, rat kingfish and bonito are all on the cards with lures, whole pilchards and live baiting the best methods. Almost any deeper headland will hold fish with the better ledges being Tura Head, Tathra Head, Nelsons and the rocks at Mystery Bay just south of Narooma. Sporadic catches of blackfish, drummer and groper can be expected in the washes, with burley a key ingredient for consistent results. Short Point near Merimbula is a great starting point for the bread and butter species. Beaches: All species will be chewing on the beaches with bream, whiting, salmon and mulloway what most anglers will be targeting. Fresh bait is best for bream, and for whiting, live beach worms the number one pick. Pilchards, fresh squid and bluebait are great baits for salmon and mulloway. Some big gummy sharks have been caught too with anglers fishing low light periods getting best results. Look for a beach that has a deeper gutter close to shore and hang on. Beaches that are worth a look are North Tura, Gillard’s, Cuttagee, and Brou beach to the north of Narooma. Tight lines all and good luck. Stuart Hindson

Bermagui Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkelling, boating and canoeing. Book a fishing charter on one of the many local boats or throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River. Try out the 18-hole golf course, hit a ball around the tennis courts or play bowls. Test your riding skills at the Bermagui Mountain Bike Park. Go bush walking, take a guided walk or bird watch in the surrounding National Parks and State Forests. Take a guided tour of the Montreal Goldfield and learn about the discovery of gold in the 1880s. Drive south to taste local wines and enjoy a meal at the Mimosa Drystone Restaurant. There is a range of accommodation in Bermagui including B&Bs, motels,
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au tourist/caravan parks, self-contained holiday units and houses and camping. The historic Bermagui Beach Hotel offers fine food, beverages and accommodation in truly spectacular location overlooking Horseshoe Bay. Bermagui is undergoing something of a building boom, with the new $3.5m Fisherman's Co-op opening in December. This magnificent building, designed by architect Phillip Cox, features timber in its construction, including white stringybark poles that were harvested locally. After receiving almost $1m in funding from the Federal Government, it is hoped that the club rooms of the Bermagui Surf Lifesaving Club at Horseshoe Bay will be completed by mid-2010. Bermagui is a fantastic place to base yourself when on holiday. After you've finished exploring all the things to do around town, it's only a short drive
to Foxglove Gardens at Tilba Tilba, and the historic village Central Tilba. Cobargo, the village famous for its working craftspeople, is only a 15 minute drive away.

Countdown To 13th Annual Bermagui Seaside Fair Saturday 13th March is the date to note and Dickinson Oval in the centre of beautiful Bermagui is the venue. “Bermagui – Proud of Our Place” is the theme for the 2010 Bermagui Seaside Fair and the organisers hope to demonstrate the history of Bermagui from its roots at the Montreal Goldfield, the fishing, timber and farming industries, through to the importance of today’s tourism for the local economy. A street parade will commence at 10am and participants are invited to dress in any costume relating to the activities mentioned above that have made Bermagui what it is today, or whatever makes the participant feel proud of Bermagui. The popular Bermagui Country Club Arts & Crafts Exhibition, held in two large marquees on Dickinson Oval from 10am - 4pm, will include painting, pottery, leadlight, glasswork, woodwork, needlecraft and china. Another “must see” is the Photographic Exhibition at the Bermagui Community
Centre (opposite Mitre 10) from 1pm, Friday 12th - 3pm, Sunday 14th March. The inaugural “Art In Place” themed art exhibition, from Saturday 13th to Saturday 20th March, will show works related to the theme “Bermagui (Permageua): Canoe Without a Paddle”. Chosen for artistic purposes, this theme reflects one of the suggested translations of the name Bermagui. A multitude of events will run throughout the day – Blessing of the Fleet at 8am, Pet Pageant, Zumba Dance, Tai Chi, Karate, Koori dancing and didgeridoo playing. The great Zamboni will delight the kids, there’s FREE novelty events for young and old, helicopter joy flights, monster auction, Marshall & Tacheci sandcastle competition and Flaherty’s Carnival. Judges will nominate someone best dressed to suit the “Proud of Our Place” theme in the “Fashions of the Fair” competition. Dickinson Oval will be bursting at the rails with market stalls carrying goods guaranteed to attract even
the most discerning purchaser. Great food provided by the Seaside Fair Committee and served by valued volunteers will feed the masses. Live entertainment will feature on two stages and Garry Carson Jones and the Poddy Dodgers, just returned from the Tamworth Country Music Festival will play a feast of country and country rock music. Popular local entertainer Jacqui Howarth will coordinate the Youth Music Showcase from 4pm - 8pm, followed by fireworks on the headland at around 8.30pm. A special Over 50’s Concert at Bermagui Country Club from 1pm on Sunday will feature a bevy of local and out of town artists and delight the “recycled teenager”. So make the 13th of March your lucky day and come along to the thirteenth Bermagui Seaside Fair. You’ll be glad you did!! Engaging and controversial - Bermagui's Sculpture on the Edge Sculpture can be controversial, engaging, confronting, moving, political, whimsical, obscure and irreverent. Above all, at Bermagui's "Sculpture on the Edge" it is accessible to people who may not have experienced sculpture before. This year "Sculpture on the Edge" has grown to encompass both the Canberra long weekend and the Bermagui Seaside Fair, running from Friday March 5th to Sunday 14th. Bermagui's "Sculpture on the Edge" Committee is delighted to announce that Prof. Philip Cox, AO, Director Cox Richardson has offered an acquisitive prize of $5000 for this year's event. Prof Cox has been a supporter of "Sculpture on the Edge" since it's inception in 2007, and his beautiful Murrah property, "Thubbul" will be open to the public on Friday March 12th from 9am - 4pm when there

will be guided tours of the Cox art collection. The annual symposium will be held at "Nerimbah", just outside Bermagui on Sunday 7th March. This year's theme is "Sculpture Controversy!" and the symposium promises some entertaining speakers and lively discussion. During the exhibition large sculptures will be displayed on Endeavour Point Headland and Horseshoe Bay Beach, whilst small sculptures can be viewed at the Bermagui Community Hall. Local and regional artists will be well represented by sculptors Daniel Lafferty, Murray Ambler, Gabrielle Powell, Ulan Murray, Karen Charlebois and Alan Watt, as well as a contingent of students from ANU led by the indefatigable Frank Maconochie. New exhibitors include renowned wood turner Richard Raffan and Wynne Prize
finalist Elizabeth Roet from the Blue Mountains. There will be a Festival Club in the evenings over the course of the exhibition to encourage artists and audience to get together. Four Winds - "One of the best Festivals in Australia" Different times and different cultures will be brought together in three days of exquisite music at the Four Winds Festival in Bermagui from April 2nd 4th. The Festival was shortlisted by Limelight Magazine as one of the six best Festivals in Australia in 2008. The romance of renaissance Italy and music reverberating around the ancient squares of Tuscany will be brought alive in the Australian bush by Italian maestro Paolo Pandolfo, the “Yo Yo Ma of the viola da gamba”. Sultry flamenco from Arte Kanela will play as dusk settles on Friday and bring a contemporary latino element picked up by the Flinders quarter on Sunday when they join with Karin Schaupp on guitar in a new collaboration of fandango with friends. Karin will join with harpist Marshall McGuire in a first time collaboration on strings playing de Falla, Granados and an Albeniz tango. The exhilarating open air site for the Festival, close to the sea, will give people an opportunity to stretch out on the grass and dream to Melbourne group e21 singing songs of earth, sky and sea, including mediaeval Gregorian chant and songs of place from Australian Indigenous songlines. Gospel and soul will be brought to mind when the women of the Black
Arm Band sing in 13 Indigenous languages on Sunday afternoon – anyone who enjoys Sweet Honey in
the Rock will love these songs which breath life into that which was lost. This walk through the ages will be launched on Good Friday at 4pm with
Four Winds' gift to the community - a free performance of a specially commissioned piece at Dickinson Oval in Bermagui. "Windsong" is a celebration of local artistic endeavour, of elite musicianship, of a vibrant festival, and of the rich and diverse community in which we live - don't miss it. David Hewitt will bring humour and whimsy, not to mention all manner of percussion to a performance of the resonant village on Saturday and will continue with the four winds cinematic orchestra and a bewildering array of instruments, objects, sound effects and absurd dialogue, gravely played, and hilariously funny. A world premier on Saturday afternoon from the Andrea Keller Quartet, commissioned by the Keir Foundation, will be a highlight of a weekend and will blur collaboration and improvisation in jazz and contemporary classical music. The strands of ancient and modern musics and styles will be brought together with assurance and brilliance by Jessica Aszodi (soprano) and Marshall McGuire (harp) with songs ranging from Dowland to Andrew Ford. Tickets for the Four Winds Festival can be purchased online at: www.fourwinds.com.au

The Montreal Goldfield is a Heritage Site 7km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. It is a relatively intact remnant of the gold rush days of the early 1880s, and is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea. A section of the original goldfield has been preserved, but for safety reasons, you can only enter the Goldfield as part of a tour. This however provides a wonderful opportunity to hear the full Montreal story; a story of mystery, history and fascinating anecdotes. Compacted paths and boardwalks allow visitors to wander through the
beautiful forest and tree ferns. The track itself is approximately 200m long and most is wheel chair accessible, and there are plenty of strategically located benches along the track. Tours of the Goldfield are held daily at 2pm and take around 1 ¼ hours, with toilet facilities available. If you have a group of more than 12, contact the Bermagui Visitors Centre 6493 3054 and choose a time that suits you. Admission is $5pp. Visitors to the Bermagui Seaside Fair can learn more about the Goldfield at the Bermagui Historical Society's stall.

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.
The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs.. Take a stroll around the town and experience the delightful ambience of yesteryear. Take your pick from an array of art and craft, rare gems and jewelry, pottery, woodwork & leatherwork, or hunt among the collectables, curios and old wares on offer. MUCH ABOUT MULCHING Autumn is again with us and as the days start to cool, more time can be spent in the garden catching up on those things that we let slip during summer. Many plants probably suffered through this long very dry summer and the time is right do some necessary maintenance, particularly mulching. By using a mulch of some type, plants will have a better chance of surviving the colder drying conditions we can expect over the coming months. One cannot stress too much the importance of this very valuable activity that not only keeps the plant roots cool and moist in summer but also protects them from the cold frosts of winter. Mulch is also beneficial for weed suppression and will also slow down rain run-off, which in turn prevents erosion and also supports a large population of soil-inhabiting organisms that are both beneficial to the plant and soil. Mulch is therefore extremely useful in most garden situations. There are a number of mulches available, and the look you are trying to achieve in the garden will determine the type of mulch you would use. Straw type mulches like sugar cane and
lucerne mulch are usually weed-free and are great around roses, flower and vegetable seedlings and throughout your perennial gardens. These mulches last for several months and whilst not only protect the root zone from drying out also in their decomposition process adds valuable nutrients to the plant and improve the texture and structure of the soil. Wood chip mulches are more generally used on permanent gardens beds and it is important to regularly fertilise your plants as these types of mulches can actually deprive the plant of nutrients. It is advisable that prior to commencing any mulching that you fertilise and water the garden bed as water can sometimes take a bit of time to wet the mulch and get through to the root zone. An important factor in using mulch around your plants, particularly in the cooler regions is the insulation benefits that the mulch provides to the root zone against the cold frosts. Frosts are very drying and shallow plants will greatly benefit from having their shallow roots protected during winter and in the early parts of spring.

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. The festival is proud to be a volunteer non-profit community project, free of corporate sponsorship, and dedicated to a day of fun for everyone who attends. Amanda’s of Mogo
To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.
There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different. Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Jennifer Drynan Mogo Zoo, home to 39 rare PROPRIETOR and exotic species., including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’. “Mogo Cottage”

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income in the previous century. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia; the bridge celebrated its 50th birthday in 2006. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There’s something about being on or near the water that lends peace and tranquillity to the spirit, and Batemans Bay is blessed to have the beautiful Clyde River running right through town. If you’re down around the river, make sure you drop in to see Enola at The Oyster Shed; it's the last shed on Wray St. , located on the north side of the bridge on the Clyde's western bank. Enola sells fresh Sydney rock oysters grown “organically” from her own leases, in one of the cleanest rivers in New South Wales. The Oyster Shed’s oysters have an excellent flavour, and

Richard Clapton is indisputably one of the most influential figures in Australian rock history. Respected by peers and critics alike for his finely-honed abilities as a musician and songwriter, he has also kept up a steady flow of hits and a loyal live following over the past two decades. He stands among a very small group of songwriters who have created timeless classics; songs which explore and reflect upon the realities of contemporary Australia, remaining fresh and relevant years after they were written.
