Merimbula whale watching This month there are thousands of Humpback Whales migrating south along the eastern coast of Australia. Merimbula is a wonderful place to view whales from! It is only a very short (8 minute) cruise out into the Merimbula Bay and from this point whales can be found! Our crew are the most experienced crew on the South Coast. We have been whale watching in Sydney over the winter and have observed thousands of humpbacks on their northern migration. All of these whales are now heading south, bringing their young calves with them! Our boat is a 75 passenger powered catamaran with both indoor cabin and outdoor viewing designed for whale watching. This gives you space to move about and a stable platform from which to enjoy the whales. She will travel to and from the whales quickly maximising your time with the whales.

Merimbula Marina operates multiple cruises each day from 15 August to 20 November. We are a family owned and operated business and believe in responsible and respectful whale watching practices. We have a deep love of the ocean and all its amazing creatures and enjoy sharing this with our passengers. In 2016 and 2017 we had 100% whale sightings on all cruises throughout the season! We are looking forward to another fantastic whale watching season in 2018! We offer a money back guarantee that whales will be sighted on your cruise – see website for full details.

2.5hr Express Whale Watch Cruise: $69 Adult. $65 Senior/Student Concession. $50 Child 1-15years. Family Ticket (2 adults and 2 children under 15 years) $199. Departing daily.

Check out our daily photos and whale reports on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ Merimbulamarina. Like our page and download photos taken from your cruise for free!

From The Editor Welcome to the September/October edition of the Far South Coast iMag. Well, I thought it was dry last time I wrote this in mid-June...it's a whole lot drier now, and it looks like it's only going to get worse. There's even more wildlife feeding on roadsides, even during the day, so please take extra care when driving, particularly at night. Things might not be quite as green as usual, but it's not just spring that's arrived, the whales are here too. You'll find several whale watching tour operators in the iMag, but if you're not keen on getting out on the water, you should be able to spot whales from a beach or headland.

Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

& surrounds

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

12

Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley, and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

22

products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

StunningTathra Things to See & Do Get up close to birds at On The Perch's walk-through aviaries Try mountain biking on the trails around Tathra Check out all the cafes and restaurants in town Enjoy a walk or bike ride from Tathra to the Bega River at Mogareeka

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during an East Coast Low that hit the region in 2016, but with repairs completed, the Wharf has resumed its role as a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

26

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views. Extensive renovations at The Tathra Hotel have now been completed, and luckily, the Hotel escaped the March bushfire unharmed. The Hotel features a micro-brewery, bistro, live music - and no poker machines.

Successful Breeding Program At On The Perch Bird Park Not only is the award winning On the Perch Bird Park a unique wildlife experience open to the public near Tathra, the licensed zoo also has a successful breeding program which, for many species, starts in Spring. With 100 different species at the bird park, the emphasis is conservation and education. Visitors can enjoy a range of different habitat aviaries including four walk-in aviaries that are perfect for budding photographers or those that just like to sit amongst the birds. Combine your visit with our Meet the Keeper talks at 11am and 1pm to learn even more. Immerse

Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira River Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

28

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.

Develop your practice at Bikram Yoga Sapphire Coast Cobargo is home to an excellent hot yoga studio, Bikram Yoga Sapphire Coast. You can’t miss it - it’s the little yellow building with the bright red door in Cobargo's main street. Owned and operated by one of Australia’s top Bikram yoga practitioners, Amrei Marden, the studio caters for beginners who have never set foot inside a yoga studio before, for people wanting to rehabilitate injuries and for those who want to improve their general health. The Cobargo Bikram yoga community is diverse and welcoming, with people of all ages and levels of fitness attending regularly. You work at your own pace under the expert guidance of Amrei. Don’t be scared by the “hot” in hot yoga. Amrei maintains the studio at a comfortable temperature and most people find that they acclimatise quickly after just a couple of lessons. Many people say the heat helps them manage chronic pain. Testimonials include people who say the practice has helped them reduce arthritis pain, manage high blood pressure, increase balance, flexibility and strength, reduce varicose veins, manage back pain, manage depression and improve overall health and fitness. Amrei also offers weekend yoga retreats -

CharmingTilba Things to See & Do Go for a hike up Gulaga Mountain Try fishing at Mystery Bay Explore the fascinating shops Visit the historic ABC Cheese Factory Drop in and explore Gulaga Gallery

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has maintained its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned’stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Passionfish - A Traveller's Tale Dear iMag readers, We could rave on about the beauty and serenity that embraces the Central Tilba landscape, it's location, the history, the quirky village...but we think this visitor's TripAdvisor review will give you some insight. Kylie and Jason, owners of Passionfish, Central Tilba. "My husband and I were taking a two week tour for our honeymoon when we dropped into Tilba. As we wandered through the town we came across Passionfish and I was immediately drawn in by the most amazing smell! We had been told by friends in Sydney that we had to visit the store and I can see why! They hand make all of their candles using soy wax which is fantastic. I was in love with a particular fragrance of soy candle but liked a different colour to match my dĂŠcor and

it was absolutely no problem. I could order any fragrance in any colour! Beautiful and unique ideas for your home will keep you drooling as you wander around the shop, I did not want to leave! They also had some really pretty jewellery which my husband surprised me with! The owners are just so lovely and we had a really memorable experience in this pretty little town. We would definitely recommend anyone passing through to stop and take a look at Passionfish, I absolutely guarantee you will love this beautiful town and you will definitely take home something from this amazing little store. Best of all if you fall in love with a product, chances are you can order it and have it sent to you, but nothing beats the experience of seeing this store in person if you get the chance :)." Granite Town - Moruya's Funky Little Festival This NSW South Coast town might just be home to the best kept secret of the Australian music festival circuit. Now in its fifth year, Granite Town is a community run, not for profit festival, and an evolution of the long running Moruya Jazz Festival. ‘Moruya’s Funky Little Festival’ just announced this year’s line-up and it doesn’t get much funkier than this. The Bamboos, Caiti Baker, Gang of Brothers, The Strides, Thunder Fox, The Swamp Stompers, Signature Series and The Big Ilch join a selection of local talent for one huge day on Saturday October 6th. The Granite Town stage has seen some of Australia’s most exciting acts perform, from The Waifs, Tash Sultana, Kim Churchill to Jeff Lang, Ash Grunwald, Katie Noonan and many more. ‘We have only been able to put on such great shows because the festival is organised by a team who just really love their music’ a festival representative said of the volunteer Granite Town Committee. ‘The community really gets behind us too,

it’s amazing how generous people are with their time to make it all happen.’ The result is a festival that is a celebration of music’s ability to bring people together. Moruya is ideally located for a weekend getaway on the unspoilt NSW South Coast, with the festival site at Moruya Racecourse just behind the beach and surrounded by bushland. There’s no need to rough it though, with a state of the art PA system, gourmet food trucks, craft beer at the bar and even the Granite Town Record Fair! Granite Town wants everyone to have a good time, young and old, with children under 12 admitted free and a range of children’s activities on offer. The community of Moruya is inviting you to get down to Granite Town, because like James Brown said, ‘We’re gonna have a funky good time.’ For tickets and all the info head to: www.granitetown.com.au www.facebook.com/granitetownmoruya/ www.instagram.com/granitetownfestival/ Email: granitetownfestival@gmail.com

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Construction of a replacement bridge is planned to commence in 2019. Now a thriving regional centre and major
