September Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - we hope you enjoy your visit in this fantastic region.

Spring has arrived, and with it come whales heading south on their annual migration to waters of the Antartic.

With their young close by, hundreds of humpbacks pass right by our door, as do southern right whales and occasionally blue whales and orcas.

The Far South Coast is one of the best places to go whale watching as time at sea is spent watching whales, not looking for them, unlike some destinations where it takes a couple of hours to reach whale feeding grounds.

In fact, sometimes whales come so close to shore they can be easily seen from headlands and beaches.

To celebrate the Far South Coast's importance to the whale population, the Eden Killer Whale Museum is showing the 'Blue Whales on the Brink' exhibition, running until 10th October .

In Bega there's the Sapphire Coast Orchid Society's spectacular Spring

Contents Orchid Show from 16th - 17th September at the Bega Scout Hall. If you like orchids, particularly native orchids, don't miss this show!

George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another

century.

You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shorebased whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

Historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay.- the Seahorse Inn here has been beautifully restored.

Fishing Report & Tide Chart - September Spring along the South Coast means longer days, warmer water and heaps more fish. What else could you ask for!

Beaches: Top month to fish the beaches with salmon, tailor, bream, and mullet the species to target.

The beaches have some very deep gutters on them at present with North Tura, Gillards, Cuttagee, Tilba and Blackfellows the pick. Using a paternoster rig with a popper and bait has been dynamite for salmon.

Gummy sharks and mulloway are also on the cards for those anglers who don’t mind fishing after dark on a moonlit night. Salmon fiilets and bunches of beach worms the best baits.

Rocks: Has been a little slow with the flatter conditions but this will pick up once we get some white water around the rock ledges. Blackfish and drummer are the bread and butter species most anglers will be targeting with most headlands producing fish.

Salmon and tailor will be patrolling the outer wash zones with whole pilchards and lures the best way to target them.

Expect the odd groper around this month to with whole red or black crabs drifted in the washes the gun way to target them.

Estuaries: Almost all estuaries should be fishing okay with the systems further south fishing better. Estuaries like Merimbula, Pambula and the Bega River will be in full swing. Flathead,

bream, tailor, blackfish and trevally will make up most anglers bags with mulloway a possibility also. Smaller soft plastics and fresh bait fished on the flooding tide should produce the goods.

Offshore: : Most local reefs along the coast will continue to fish well, especially for snapper. Some good fish to 6kg have been caught, with a few lucky anglers having sessions of 20 fish and more. That’s pretty good fishing and it should continue through September. Anglers using floating baits like pilchards and squid while anchored have had the best success.

Using a little burley here will greatly improve your chances as well. Fishos that are drifting and using paternoster rigs have also done well, though the size of the fish is smaller. Expect morwong, tiger flathead, trevally and john dory while targeting the snapper.

Reefs that are deeper are producing better catches with Potato Point, Tuross, and the 6 and 12 mile reefs of Bermagui being the pick.

For several years now, whale sightings have been steadily increasing off the coast.

In September 2009 ‘True Blue’ had some spectacular encounters, including seeing 40 whales lunge feeding and spy-hopping around the vessel, whales close enough to touch, and a massive pod of 500 Common Dolphins.

Species likely to be spotted include humpbacks with their young, False Killer Whales, Southern Rights, Minke, rare

Blue Whales, and Migaloo.

The Far South Coast is a fantastic whale watching destination as whales can often be found within a half-hour of Merimbula, feeding and playing close to shore before migrating south to the Antarctic.

Humpbacks are called the acrobats of the sea; when you’ve see them breach, lifting their huge weight clear out of the water, it’s easy to understand why.

They’re very inquisitive creatures, and have been known to swim close to the vessel to get a “whale’s eye view”. In fact, a passenger on one of

Where you might see them Blow Inshore waters particularly along southern coastline between May and October. Also seen on the south-eastern and south-western coastlines. Have been known to enter Sydney harbour.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.

European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.

Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late nineteenth century.

However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.

Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings.

Pambula has an eclectic mix of

businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs.

Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach with an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth.

Panboola - a great natural asset Visitors to Pambula may have noticed a change in the land at the bottom of the town over the last few years, as areas that were once farmland are being developed for the purposes of nature conservation, protecting and restoring habitat for birds and other indigenous flora and fauna and for community education.

The project known as Panboola (in recognition of the Aboriginal presence on the land for many thousands of years) offers many recreational options, including bird-watching, picnicking, cycling, walking or just sitting and enjoying the view. Picnic tables and seats have been installed in Tips Billabong and the Waterbird Sanctuary making outdoor lunches easy, and there’s plenty of space for a picnic blanket.

Panboola has also become a favourite spot with locals for walking their dogs, but please note that dogs must be kept on a leash, and are restricted to roads; they are not permitted to enter through any gates. The main entrances to Panboola are at Bullara St, next to Robert Smith's, and from the Princes Highway, opposite Oaklands.

Panboola is a wonderful place to experience nature, history and culture, and it doesn’t cost a cent.

Award-winning pianist plays at Wolumla this September The Sapphire Coast Music Society is delighted to present multi-award winner Lachlan Redd on Sunday 26th September at the Wolumla Hall.

Lachlan attracted national attention in the classical Australian musical scene when he replaced Bruno Leonardo Gelber, as an undergraduate, in two performances of Rachmaninoff's Concerto 3.

The Age reported, "There was drama at the Melbourne Symphony...Bruno Leonardo Gelber suddenly took ill and could not perform Rachmaninoff's demanding Piano Concerto 3 in the Concert Hall that night. Lachlan Redd, winner of the 1996 Keyboard

rehearsal with the orchestra...and was given a standing ovation for his

Magic Mountain re-opens for more summer fun Re-opening for the summer on Thursday 2nd September, Merimbula’s Magic Mountain is a great day out for the whole family, with a huge range of rides to entertain young and old. One of the most popular rides at Magic Mountain is the Diamond Python Roller Coaster, the only roller coaster on the South East Coast of Australia.

Orchid Club's Spring Show comes to Bega Anyone needing a little colour in their day should head to the Sapphire Coast Orchid Club's Spring Show, held at the Bega Scout Hall on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th September.

The hall will be filled with spectacular blooms and heady perfume, as

growers from all over the South Coast put their best on display. Spring is the time for Australian Native orchids, and visitors can expect to see a large variety of these colourful gems, including some spectacular specimens of Dendrobium speciosum, the Rock Lily. The ever popular Cymbidium orchids will again be well represented, complimented by a variety of other exotic blooms.

Potting demonstrations and tips on orchid culture will be given by some of the South Coast’s top orchid growers during the show.

Cobargo Secrets

Monthly Garden Advice C’mon - Spring Into It Spring is well on the way at last, and with the heavenly weather and lengthening warmer days, the incentive to get out and about in the garden preparing for our summer flower and vegetable gardens should be utmost in our plans.

As the days become warmer the sap in most plants commences to move and this usually means that the supple new growth can be very susceptible to insect attack, particularly by sap suckers including aphid and thrip.

Control these pests with pyrethrum

or with a systemic spray. There are a number of different products available through nurseries.

Spring also brings a number of other important tasks that need to be attended to as soon as possible.

Daphne and gardenia may be showing some yellowing of their leaves. This could be just some older leaves dying out or it is time to give these relatively heavy feeders an application of nutrient. Commence monthly applications of a liquid fertiliser suitable for acid loving plants.

There are several types available from nurseries and please only use the recommended rate suggested on the pack.

September and October is also a good time to apply a weed and feed to your lawn to give them a pick up after winter and to control any broad leaf weeds that might be trying to get a foothold in the lawn.

A visit to a nursery during early spring will encourage you to think perennials. There should be some very interesting new releases around this year and many of the tried and true are receiving attention again.

Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area.

The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Clyde River Oysters at the Oyster Shed There’s something about being on or near the water that lends peace and tranquillity to the spirit, and Batemans Bay is blessed to have such easy access to the beautiful Clyde River, running right through the township.

If you’re down around the water’s edge, make sure you drop in to see Enola at The Oyster Shed, the last shed on Wray St, located on the north-western bank of the Clyde River.

Enola sells fresh Sydney rock oysters grown “organically” from her own leases, in one of the cleanest rivers in New South Wales. The Oyster Shed’s oysters have an excellent flavour, and

are a highly nutritious food, being rich in omega 3 oils, iron, zinc, iodine, vitamins A, B complex, & C. These days, you can be much more adventurous in the kitchen with oysters than just serving the old standards of oysters kilpatrick or mornay. Just ask Enola - she’s got lots of recipes for a more contemporary approach.

The Oyster Shed is also a great spot for a picnic. All you need is the picnic rug, a bottle of wine and some freshlyopened oysters, then relax and enjoy the spectacular Clyde River views.
