DC Paper - Autumn 2017

Page 1

Think about how much we have and yet how often we long for something different. Consider how much we love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our standard but long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but be able to enjoy nature. To be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpack and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather and discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are neither professional nor private but everything at the same time, all the time. We are flexible and diverse, exploring bon vivants. To us luxury is never about the surface. To us it’s about connections and encounters, contrasts and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV to hear new stories, get new impressions – or suddenly find ourselves out of reach, not being online all the time. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. We are curious and hungry but are expected to be creative in standardised, air conditioned, rooms while we long for encounters and conversations during a hike that might lead us to a completely different place than we expected. So, put on your backpack and put on a pair of shoes that will work for both an expedition into the unknown part of the big city and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the expedition begins – right here in the heart of the city.

WELCOME Have you checked in? Then let me take this opportunity to both thank you and congratulate you. You are among friends here and hopefully you have already had the chance to meet some of us working at the hotel. I would also like to welcome all readers to this very first issue of our quarterly paper. To have the privilege to be here, from the start, at Downtown Camper is exciting. This hotel is a unique endeavour that functions both as a safe harbour and a bridge to all the exciting things Stockholm has to offer. A place where you can relax after a day of work or, if you prefer, use as a starting point to discover the concrete, greenery and waters of the city. Nothing should stand in between you and your next adventure so that’s why you’ll find bikes, kayaks, longboards and skateboards available in the lobby. Because that’s the way we want life to be – an adventure. That’s also why we have created an atmosphere made for informal and spontaneous meetings. You won’t find any conventional conference tables in this place, but more likely swings and games of all different kinds. If you have any questions or comments please don’t hesitate to talk to us. We want you to enjoy your stay and if I’m not here I have probably left for the woods. Each fall I take a couple of days off and

head for new adventures. To put on my boots, turn off the phone and meet my friends to spend some quality time in nature are among the best things I know and a great way to wind down. At the hotel we strive to create similar opportunities for you to slow down and relax; in December we will open The Nest, our roof terrace – a genuine refuge in the midst of the concrete jungle open for the guests of the hotel. In this issue of the paper you’ll meet some of our inspiring co-workers; our creative and passionate chef Claes, our social and engaging Lifestyle Concierge Kristian and Jörgen Brennicke, the photographer behind all the artwork in our guest rooms. I hope you will enjoy staying with us. Happy reading and see you soon! Jacob Dahlberg General Manager

Man on Fire Photographer: Hanna Reuterwall

Claes grew up in Stockholm, surrounded by pots and pans. From a family of born and bred chefs, he has had over 30 years of experience from the industry, working for top restaurants like Nosh&Chow, Grill and Brasserie Le Rouge. As the mastermind behind Campfire’s menu, he gets his inspiration from the open fire and the honest and quiet country life, hoping to bring people together over a charcoal-cooked meal with simple, genuine ingredients and a lot of heart. Hi there, Claes! When and why did you decide to become a chef? Food has always been a very central part in my life. My grandfather was a well-known chef here in Stockholm, and my father worked at Operakällaren for 40 years, so there’s been a lot of cooking at home ever since I was little. Back then, I was often running around behind the scenes in some restaurant’s kitchen, watching in admiration and fascination as the chefs worked. I thought they were very cool, but also a bit scary! I think I fell in love with that life at an early stage the scents, heat and atmosphere in a kitchen. It’s a place where everyone can be their honest self. What defines good food to you? Genuine and good ingredients, grown and bred in the right way. And the food has to be cooked with love and dedication. So, tell us, what’s the best thing about working in a kitchen? Belonging to a team. Every day is a challenge that we have to get through together. It’s awesome being able to start up a new restaurant with such a unique offering as Campfire. I’m very excited to be here from the very start and help put together a strong team. Tell us more about Campfire! At Campfire we want every guest to feel relaxed and welcome. The fire is essential in here. Not only as an element in the cooking process, but also in bringing that warm and cosy atmosphere you get when you are out camping; gathering around the campfire, sharing stories, and making memories with friends. In the kitchen, we use that charcoal-grilled taste from the flames to create unpretentious dishes with a lot of flavours, resulting in meals you can share with your friends and family, talk about, taste from each other’s plates, and simply enjoy together. Where do you find your inspiration? As I am chatting to the farmers, watching cows and chickens munch away in their fields, seeing how the carrots grow. Stuff like that. I can be eating greasy fast food from a food truck somewhere, enjoying a flawless meal in a Michelin star restaurant, walking around a food market on a Sunday with my wife and kids, or having friends over for a nice barbeque. It’s experiencing new flavours with the people you care for. Do you have a personal favourite on the menu? That’s a very hard question! As I have created them, they are all my favourites, but if I have to go for one, I would pick the Brussel sprouts. It’s so simple, yet so good. I would also recommend the grilled marshmallows as a dessert. So, finally, what’s the most important thing in your kitchen? Passionate chefs. And of course, the fire!

Run like Hell Friendly, open, curious and always on the run. Kristian Hell, originally from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, really personifies the “people’s person”. He seems to always be looking for new experiences and encounters.

Why are you doing what you’re doing? I’m stubborn and passionate about my decisions. It’s the evolution of my being. Why is it that in 2017 the hardest thing to do is often what you enjoy doing the most?

Kristian spent most of his youth playing basketball and doing long distance running. After school he studied fashion, opened a concept store, and started his own denim brand - all before the age of 23. Eight years ago, he crossed land and sea to find himself in Stockholm. Kristian has since had a busy career as the front of house at the hipster hangout, Trädgården, and with his own brand, Ssideline City. As the new Lifestyle Concierge at Downtown Camper, Mr Hell has once again set foot in new territory. He is now officially our “Mr Know it All” when it comes to Stockholm, his fun and relaxed running group has become an activity that attracts locals and travellers alike, and he is the go-to person if you are looking for ideas for something to do during your stay.

Tell us about your role here at DTC? I think being head hunted for a cutting-edge signature hotel is the ultimate compliment to my previous work. I was inspired when Scandic said it would be cool to integrate what I do with the day-to-day life at Downtown Camper. I was also surprised that a business of this size was willing to actually listen. My title is Lifestyle Concierge, which I think translates to ‘be you’. My role is to make strangers friends, integrating guests with locals and locals with guests. As an example, we are collaborating with some really cool Stockholmers and local business partners, e.g. the app Lokalii that offers unique and fun events on a peer-to-peer basis, to make sure we can deliver a memorable experience for all our guests.

Hello Kristian! What makes you “tick”? It’s simple - good people doing good things. You meet new people every day. What’s that like? People come from all walks of life and if you can find something in common with them there’s a good chance of learning something new. We are living in a world where it seems as though everyone has their guard up a little too high. The best part about being surrounded by people is that it provides the opportunity to become a better version of your ‘self’. What do you love about Stockholm? When my time came to leave Australia and explore the world, I had a one-way ticket to Heathrow Airport - and no plan. Stockholm turned out to be the third city I visited. After ten days of Scandinavian clean (the air, the streets, the fashion and design), I chose to “accidently” miss my return trip to the UK and soak up some more of the vibe here. I came here with nothing more than a backpack and a pair of sneakers but I have stayed put for eight years, so my answer to your question is; it’s the capital city of a country that wants to be better.

What makes a great vacation in your opinion? Letting unexpected things lead to finding inspiration. It might be meeting new people that you find something in common with, accidently stumbling upon a place that you really like, or soaking up a new exciting culture. All we are trying to do in our life is to find our way home. And “home” is not always at home. If you could leave people with one piece of advice, what would it be? Have you ever watched a family of ants make it work? “Politik Of Mutual Help” is tattooed on my right arm. Come and meet Kristian in person at the hotel! With our vast range activities on offer and network of local people and partners, he’ll help you plan your day and find something new and exciting to discover. To find out more about our many activities and events, go to our website scandichotels.com/downtowncamper.

The Downtown Hotspots No one wants to be a lost tourist, right? We all want to find the best hidden gems when visiting a new place. In our mission to offer our guests the very best of Stockholm, we teamed up with some cool, in-the-know Stockholmers to create a digital insider’s city guide, that we hope will contribute to a fun and different visit to our capital. Now, with a little help from the locals, you can discover

Stockholm from a unique perspective, and really get the most out of your visit. Our locals take you behind the scenes, share their personal hotspots and tell you, in their own words, why each place is worth a visit. You can find all the Downtown Hotspots on Google Maps and the guides are also available as podcasts on our website and on iTunes.

Emma Sundh, who lives in Midsommarkransen, south of Stockholm, is a freelancing journalist, a blogger and a writer. Emma writes about vintage on Emmasvintage.se and has published two fashion books; Vintage Party and Vintage Hairstyles.

Petter Inedahl is a writer and a “ghost connoisseur”, who grew up in Stockholm. He’s had an interest in the occult since he was a child, but it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that he decided to really dig into the spooky side of Stockholm.

Daniel Paris is a blogger, host and lecturer from Stockholm. He graduated in social studies, and continuously participates in the morning shows TV4 Nyhetsmorgon and the radio show Vakna med NRJ.

”There are a lot of vintage places in Stockholm but I’d like to mention one in particular, Beyond Retro on Brännkyrkagatan 82 on Södermalm. Ohlala, I can spend hours here. Which I do. Very often. You’ll find two Beyond Retro stores in Stockholm. There is one in the centre (worth a look), but my favourite is located at Zinkensdamm in Södermalm (best and cosiest neighbourhood if you ask me). Browse vintage from the 40’s, find a perfectly hand sewn coat from the 50’s or get your hand on a unique and trendy 90’s piece. Here you’ll find everything from past decades. And the best thing? The store is huge!”

”Spökslottet on Drottninggatan 116 in Vasastan is the most classic of all Stockholm´s haunted houses. So much so that it is actually officially named Spökslottet (“the haunted mansion”). Built in the early 18th century by a wealthy German merchant it has enjoyed a ghostly reputation for well over 200 years. Sightings of a grey lady have been numerous, as have inexplicable cold spots and a general feeling of unease, and while conducting an exorcism some time during the 19th century a priest is said to have been thrown out of a window and broken his legs on the pavement below.”

Discover the full list of Petter’s haunted spots on our website, including Riddarholmskyrkan, Hornska Palatset, Blasieholmen and Johannes Kyrka.

“I have always been very interested in documenting things, ever since I was little. When everybody was saving their money to buy candy or a bicycle, I’d save money for a camera, and then I would walk around taking pictures of my friends, or nature, babies, dogs. I was always taking a picture of something. Located on the 23rd floor in a skyscraper in the heart of Södermalm, you will find ”Och Himmelen Därtill”. This rooftop bar/ restaurant really gives a new meaning to the word ”rooftop bar”. A place where every moment is a potential photoshoot. ” Discover the full list of Daniel’s selfie spots on our website, including Kungsträdgården, Fotografiska, STHLM Brunch Club, and Fjärilshuset.

How to Survive in Stockholm’s Urban Jungle Stockholm, like any other city, has its peculiarities. As a visitor it’s sometimes easy to feel a little out of place. How do you walk? How do you talk? How do you find your way? Here are seven tips that will help you get into the game quicker. So relax, soon you’ll blend in like a local. “Hej!” Stockholmers are social creatures that love to hang out with friends, but when meeting new people they can be a bit reserved at first. The opposite to people from Gothenburg who happily greet everyone, but for the people of Stockholm a silent nod is sometimes about all you get. They’ll play it cool. After all, they are from the big city and not the countryside. If you are to greet a local say “Hej” (Hello) or try one of the slang versions “Tjena” or “Tja” (similar to “Hey” or “Yo”). That will surely break the ice and you’ll get a “Hej” and a smile in return. Do as the pigeons of Farsta (a borough south of town) do: take the subway. Over 60 different species of birds can be found in central Stockholm. One of the more commonly occurring species is the wood pigeon that, like the Stockholmer, is a social and faithful bird that often mates for life. And like every big city, you’ll also spot city pigeons here. In Stockholm, some of the more developed specimens have taken their urban bird life to a whole new level. They have started riding the subway! The so called Farsta Pigeons can be seen getting on the train at the station of Hökarängen and getting off at Farsta Centrum, two of the stations on the green subway line that are above ground. The birds have learned that the subway will automatically take them to new places where they can find food. So, if you are in a hurry to get from A to B, do like the Farsta Pigeons and take the subway. Don’t hesitate – just keep walking! Stockholmers consider themselves early adopters. They quickly absorb the latest and greatest trends and pay no attention to the fact that they live in a cold distant corner of northern Europe. Instead

they act like they live in Manhattan but they never seem to be able to master all the codes of metropolitan living. Like how you pass a person on the sidewalk without bumping into them. In the big cities like New York and London you rarely see any collisions between two pedestrians, but in Stockholm they get caught in an awkward rocking back and forth situation surprisingly often, where as one person moves to the right, the other moves to the left and so on until one person is able to break the spell and continue walking. So, if you find yourself on a collision course with someone while strolling in the city, don’t hesitate, just keep on walking. Orientate yourself. 365 steps up. When you arrive in Stockholm it can be hard to find your way. The city is surrounded by water and the neighbourhoods are spread out over different islands. To get a good overview, head to one of the city’s vantage points. On the heights of Södermalm there are several great places to admire the cityscape from, like Mariaberget, Katarinavägen or, right across town, from the 155 meters tall Kaknästornet, the tallest building in Stockholm. The most central vantage point can be found in the tower of Stockholm’s city hall, designed by the tenacious architect Ragnar Östberg and inaugurated in 1923. The tower is 106 meters tall and the stairs to the top consists of 365 steps. From the top you can enjoy a 360 degree view of Stockholm. Admission is 50 SEK. Up and down on a bike. Every day around 100 000 of the city’s inhabitants get on their bikes to get to and from work, and in rush traffic they move fast. Fastest of them all are the bike couriers and “mamils” (middle age men in lycra), and in places like Götgatsbacken by Slussen you have to pay extra attention. Exploring the city by bike has its advantages, though. You get to experience the street life, architecture, enjoy amazing views and all the lush and green open areas with all your senses. You can also move around quickly and even reach destinations outside the city in no time. But be prepared for all the

hills. Compared to other bike-friendly cities Stockholm is extremely hilly with steep cliffs and bridges and sometimes you really need to make an effort to reach your destination. But that doesn’t stop locals from riding their bikes. So if you really want to blend in, do as the locals do and take the bike. And if you’re short of one, you can borrow a bike at the hotel’s front desk. But don’t forget the helmet. Cards Only. In a couple of years when the hipster scene in Stockholm has evolved even further, cash will probably be cool again. The beard-cladded men that today can be seen brewing IPAs will probably start forging their very own silver coins by then. But in fall 2017 your credit card is still king as more and more places only accept payment with cards. But the coolest and simplest method of payment is called Swish, a Swedish payment app. Unfortunately you need a Swedish bank account to use it. Sorry. The weather, Slussen and Zlatan. What topics of conversation are suitable to have with locals? The weather is always a safe bet. Life in the city follows the shifting seasons and there is always a phrase that will fit the current forecast. “How wonderful to see the sun!” and “We have longed for this rain” or “Been a long time since we saw this much snow”. If you are in the neighbourhood Södermalm ask “How is Bajen doing?”. That’s the nickname for the local football team Hammarby. In the same area you’ll be very likely to find a hipster who loves to talk about locally brewed beer, sneakers and beard grooming. But if you really want to get the conversation going with a local, ask them about Slussen, the hub that connects Södermalm and the Old City. It has been under construction for the last couple of years, and everyone, and we mean absolutely everyone, has an opinion about the project. Ironically, no one seems to know when it will be finished. If all else fails you can always say something about Zlatan.

Jörgen Brennicke

Jörgen Brennicke photographed by Martin Wichard

The Storyteller

Stockholm-raised photographer and videographer Jörgen Brennicke describes himself as a seeker. Brennicke was born in 1967, and we must say it seems like this multi-talented daredevil has kept himself pretty busy chasing adventures in his life; were it on a skateboard, pursuing a black belt in karate, as the lead singer in a garage band, a dedicated runner, or on one of his many travels around the world. His most recent adventure has taken a Downtown Camper direction, resulting in a series of 30 still images that decorate the walls in the hotel’s guest rooms. For Jörgen, the quest for the story is imperative. His passion for photography started in the southern suburbs of Stockholm, as Jörgen kicked off his skateboarding career in the half-pipe, snapping pictures of his skating friends. His inspiration springs from people - friends and family - who often take center stage in his narratives. It was in the 90’s that this skateboarding karate kid’s professional photo career took off, followed by film school in ‘96 and thus, he began combining still photography with film. Today Jörgen works both as a photographer and Director of Photography. The search for the next story is his perpetual motivation. Hi Jörgen! Describe your creative process. For me it’s always about finding the story. E.g. why are they wearing this watch, drinking this drink or running in these clothes? I always have to believe in the images I’m creating. That’s where I start; I then think about moments that I would like to catch. It’s crucial for me to know what I’m aiming for and why, to be able to communicate that to everybody involved in the project. As we are starting the project, I improvise wildly around the story and the mood boards that I’ve made as a foundation. I love all parts of the process, but to get started - to take that first exposure that’s always a mad adrenaline rush for me. Why photography? That’s a good question. My mother was an eccentric artist, painter, potter and entertainer and always 100% supportive of whatever I chose to do. I think that was a big part of it. When I, as a kid, started taking pictures of my skateboarding friends, using the darkroom equipment of my best friend’s dad, my passion for photography really kicked off. I started working in a camera store to learn more, it enabled me to take more pictures and try different cameras. A friend of mine had just started working as a photographer’s assistant, and we spent all of our spare time experimenting in the studio where he worked. I started assisting too in the early 90’s and worked for two fantastic photographers for four years. In ‘94 I started my own business and a couple of years later I went off to

film school. I’ve been working with both still and motion picture ever since and I love every part of it. What was it like working on this project? Usually I work in a team. I hook up with an art director, a stylist or a make-up artist and we start to discuss what we want to achieve. In this case, I was the only one in charge of the creative. I don’t mind that at all but the pressure to get it done and make it right is slightly more intense. The goal for the Downtown Camper project was to present 30 images and combine them in different constellations for the hotel rooms. As usual I started by creating mood boards and thought about the scenes that could build this story and the people that could be part of it. The puzzle part was next; ‘what images am I lacking?’, ‘do I believe in the story?’ etc. When I could tick those boxes, I started putting together different combinations for the rooms, making sure that a story was told in each room, and connected to the overall story that I wanted to tell about the hotel. What was it that inspired you to take on this project? It’s not every day that you get a project like this. ’Please take 30 photos for the decoration of the rooms of our new cool hotel - we would like the images to be Jörgen Brennicke style’. Active people with Stockholm as a backdrop was the idea. I wanted to inspire people to get out there and explore. What great things can you do where you live? It’s usually more accessible than you think; to go surfing, hang out with friends, look at the view, take a deep breath and just indulge in life. When the spectator feels an urge to step in to the photo, to be a part of that specific moment, I feel like I’ve succeeded. You must have a personal favourite? I’m extra happy with the images that I shot on Långholmen with Mikael Trane, the son of a skateboarding friend of mine, whom I’ve been wanting to work with for a long time. Mikael is a skilled gymnast and to be out there and ask him ’could you make a flip from there into the water?’ and have him say ’sure, no problem’ was awesome. Also, to take a picture of my daughter Tindra and her two cool friends on the top of one of my favourite Stockholm spots, our local ski slope Hammarbybacken, in the summer sunset was also a blast. So Jörgen, where next? I just want to keep exploring. Right now I’m really into running again. Lately, I’ve spent a lot of my time training for a half marathon in the mountains. Can’t wait. It’s going to be a struggle, but I’m up for it. I’m also doing some travelling with my family, first to Mallorca and then we’re off to St Martin. I can’t wait to try their skate park, do some running, cooking, and of course, take some great pictures!

Normally operating from their Åsögatan location in Södermalm, they have now temporarily moved in at Downtown Camper, to assemble our rental bikes on site in the hotel lobby. ATR will answer all things bicycle, so pop by their workshop at the hotel for a chance to meet them in person!
