DC Paper - Summer 2023

SUMMER 2023

Think about how much we have, yet we long for something different. We love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our living standards, still we long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but every now and then, nature calls us back. We want to be spontaneous; to be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpacks - and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather, discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private - we are both, all of the time. We are the generation of diverse, curious, and exploring ’bon vivants’.

To us, luxury is never about the surface. It’s about encounters, contrasts, experiences, and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV, to hear new stories, get new impressions, or for just one moment find ourselves out of reach, offline, offgrid. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that works for both an expedition into the unknown and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

Seduced by Summer

The warm weather’s got us all hooked. The lively (but way too short) season is here and it’s hard not to be swept away by its euphoric vibe. Seems like every summer, the locals do their best to jam a whole year of social life into a mere two, three months as Stockholm springs to life. Hungry for adventure, we make the most of the long, sunny days and the luke warm waters, and crowds of people come together at the sunny patios. Just look outside, there’s no doubt - the summer craze is here, and at Downtown Camper, we’re going with the flow. Here to tell us more about what the summer has to offer is Daniel Zettervall, Acting Food & Beverage Manager.

Hi Daniel, the summer looks promising, doesn’t it? In what way have you and your colleagues prepared for the new season?

I love this time of year, there’s activity everywhere you look. At Downtown Camper, summer arrives with fun activities on the calendar and loads of exciting new treats on the menu. Campfire, our main restaurant, is a relaxed and laid-back place to be, especially during summer: Inside, outside, who can tell, as we open the windows to the outdoor seating area to let the summer breeze in.

Food-wise, what does summer bring this year?

We are gearing up to meet the crazed summer vibe, with grilled seasonal favourites and snack-friendly street food. My colleagues in the kitchen have done a superb job in creating an exciting menu with several easy-to-grab dishes that you can easily eat with your hands, if you want

to. You can drop in for something light, maybe a Salmon Tostada or a Salade Niçoise, or sit down for a full three-course dinner. Go for a timeless favourite like the Steak Minute, or why not try our own plant-based No-Meat Burger. As always, there’s a wide selection of local beer and biodynamic wines to go with your meal.

Sounds delicious. As for the cocktails, what’s cooking in the rooftop lounge?

This season, the cocktail menu in The Nest draws inspiration from the green, lush valleys of Colombia. Using in-season berries and fruits, we create a fusion in our own, local way. Our syrups and infusions are home made and influenced by tastes from both worlds. If you’re hungry, there’s always something good to nibble on, like charcuteries, flatbread pizzas, and more. Oh, and another great thing about summer up here is that the rooftop terrace is open for drinking guests from 20.00, so you can now enjoy a cocktail outside in the sun.

What do people drink this time of year?

Our big sellers are fresh, fizzy, and spritzy cocktails with bubbles and exotic fruits, proper vacay-style. In The Nest, we’re adding some extra love to our low-ABV cocktails, so that’s a tip if you want to go easy on the booze.

You know your way around the cocktail game. What’s trending there at the moment?

The big thing right now is embracing the simple and clean taste. The liquor itself takes center stage and the idea is to use only one, or maybe two

other ingredients in your cocktail.

Sustainability is another focus area that is driving innovation on the bar scene. It’s inspiring and fun to see the surge of ideas and solutions for how we can use, preserve, and repurpose ingredients.

How does your team work with sustainability?

Sustainable thinking is in our DNA as we are a part of the Scandic family. At Downtown Camper, we have been working actively with this since day one, starting with the climate compensation for all the meat we buy. Our sustainability work is an ongoing thing for us, and it’s a process that will never really end. You constantly have to adapt, create, and find new ways – at many levels - to minimize your footprint. For many years, we have been working on the repurposing of ingredients, in order to make them relevant for a longer period of time. For example, the fruit that has passed its ”peachy fresh” period, can be dried and used as garniture. Although we have a ”zero waste” ambition, some food will eventually be discarded - but with our waste management program, it can be turned into biofuel.

Thanks for the chat, Daniel. Anything else you look especially forward to this summer?

I’m really looking forward to working. The summer is an awesome time - the vibe is great in the city and at the hotel. This season can be busy at times, but the guests are in a good mood, and that gives you a lot of energy. It’ll be fun.

There’s also...

Downtown Camper Café is a social hotspot to add to your list. As usual at Downtown Camper, sustainability, wellbeing, and togetherness are important focal points and the offering has been carefully selected accordingly. Filled to the brim with goodies, the menu is largely plant-based and vegetarian, with nutritious, healthy, and beautiful food that encourages an all-together sustainable lifestyle. Even the furniture and utensils have been hand picked and are made of recycled or rescued materials. Just the way we like it.

Located on one of Stockholm’s most happening walking streets, Drottninggatan, the café is a perfect pitstop on your city expedition, offering everything from all-day breakfast and tasty lunch grub to coffee, awesome ice cream, locally produced beer, biodynamic wines, and organic soft drinks.

Downtown Camper Café is a given hangout for the local coworking community and travellers that come from near and far. Get there by taking the lifts to floor -2, or do the walk around the corner outside.

Psst. Daniel in full swing. Visit The Nest for a taste of Colombia this summer. Snack-friendly fingerfood and punchy cocktails in the rooftop cocktail lounge. Campfire takes it outside - with comfort food from all corners of the world and street food treats from the charcoal grill.

OUR TOP PICKS

Summer is here so let’s make the most of it. Every day there’s something new to explore here at Downtown Camper - check out all activities on the opposite page. Here are three of our personal favourites. Yes, there’s a clear water theme here and yes, it’s because we won’t have anything less than a perfect summer.

Kayaking

Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 09.30

Swim n’ Run

Mondays at 09.00, Thursdays at 16.00

Explore the city from a different angle. Let’s go for a scenic tour around the stunning island of Långholmen. Sounds like something that floats your boat? Come join.

Stockholm was built on islands, so we figured what better way to explore the city than from the surface of the water? This activity was such a huge success last year, so naturally we decided to do a rerun this summer. Långholmen offers a lot to explore - the old prison, the lovely wooden boats, the view, beaches, picnic

spots. It’s a gem and one of our favourite spots, so rest assured - this experience will stay with you.

For all levels. Kids welcome in parent’s company. 3 hour event (bike trip incl.) 150 sek per person, no refunds. Dress accordingly, and bring an extra jumper / sweater. Rain ponchos for sale in the lobby gift shop.

Sign up before 17.00 on the day before at: lifestyleconcierge@scandichotels.com

Spending summer in the city requires the right approach. Keep your head cool - let’s go for a Swim n’ Run!

We’ve decided not to run in circles anymore and now we’re taking aim at one of Stockholm’s many beaches, the one in Rålambshovsparken. Join the DC crew on a fun city run and cool off in the blue waters by Kungsholmen. The Swim n’ Run activity takes you on one of the most scenic routes of the city and with our dedicated runners, you’re in good company.

In summer, our capital springs to life with lush greenery scattered in between the ocra-coloured buildings and quaint bridges. Although Downtown Camper is located in one of the most urban areas of the city, nature is never far away.

Thursdays at 09.30

Our newest activity takes place on, well, the water of course. On Thursdays we take you out on an adventure that will leave you hooked and longing for more.

This activity takes us around Långholmen on stand-up paddlingboards. Our starting point is 15 mins away by bike. Never paddled before? Relax, anyone can join (but it helps if you have a decent balance). Kids welcome in parent’s company. 3 h event (bike trip incl.). 150 sek per person, no refunds. Dress accordingly, bring a change of clothes + a jumper / sweater. Bikes for a loan.

Sign up before 18.00 on the day before at: lifestyleconcierge@scandichotels.com

Paddleboarding OR, JUST GO PLOGGING

We have selected our favourite running route for this activity, and the destination is one of Stockholm’s most popular beaches, in Rålambshovsparken. Just plunge in and cool off!

The pace will be adapted to fit the group, so whether you’re looking for a quiet jog or a high-pace sprint, that’s what we’ll do. The run is about 5 km and the activity takes about one hour, warm-up and stretching included. The DC runner crew will bring extra water to drink during the run.

You don’t have to sign up in advance to attend this event - come down to the lobby when it’s time, and remember to dress accordingly. Let’s go Swim n’ Run this summer, you won’t regret it.

Start your day like a hero - this is a proper boost of confidence. Grab a Plogga bag from the lifestyle desk in the lobby, and go for a treasure hunt. Try to pick as much rubbish from the streets as you can fit into your bag. When your bag is full, bring it back to the hotel and hand it in: You can now claim an awesome reward: A DC tote bag filled with beautiful body care products from our own line Downtown Mist. Happy hunting, and nature says thanks. This is a collaboration with @Plogga.

The Stockholm Survival Guide

There’s no doubt, Stockholm is one of the better cities to spend summer in. Built on 14 islands, the city offers a hard-to-beat blend between urban and natural exploring. Cool off by the beach after mingling with the hip crowd at Nytorget, dine at a Michelin star restaurant after discovering the wilderness on Djurgården. It’s all here waiting for you, so here are our best tips and tricks for you to conquer the city.

Stay warm / cool off

Sweden is fickle. It can be 35 degrees and blistering sun – or 5 degrees and raining cats and dogs. To manage expectations, Swedes have a saying: ”Det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder”, which roughly translates to ”there’s no bad weather, only bad clothes”. So if you want to be on the safe side, pack your entire wardrobe before travelling here. Alternatively, if you’re less fussy, just bring a warm jumper or rain jacket, even if the weather is nice when you head out. Should it (against all odds) be a hot day, we mean the kind of hot day where you want to throw yourself into the nearest puddle, it’s not hard to find a place to cool off. The beaches come in various shapes and sizes, from cliffs and rocks to white, sandy beaches perfect for the family. But keep it classy (despite what you might have heard about Swedes), it’s best to wear a swimsuit, and don’t forget the sunscreen.

Watering holes

Like on all expeditions, it’s essential to stay hydrated. So fill up your thermos with tap water (we have some of the best water in the world) before heading out. Plan a few pitstops along your way - Stockholm has plenty of nice bars with terraces along the water or floating pontoons where you can have a snack and a drink whilst enjoying the beautiful locals, ahem, scenery. And be patient. If it’s a sunny day, you might have to wait in line. Swedes seem to double in numbers when the sun comes out, and they all have the same thing in mind - a “uteservering” (outdoor seating). So much for originality, huh.

Shelter

Uh-oh, here comes the rain. As you might have gathered, we’re not guaranteed good weather all summer long. So like a scout, be prepared – there’s nothing worse than flat hair and dripping clothes when you’re doing the city. Luckily, there are great places to visit even for those inevitable “cats and dogs” days: Shopping malls, cafés, art galleries – or if you’re really ambushed by the rain – the nearest tree. Stockholm offers plenty of shelter. Or why not take the opportunity to discover Stockholm’s underground? The tube here is famous for its art that stretches from the suburbs to the Central Station. It’s known as the longest art exhibition in the world.

Get around

Public transport will take you anywhere you want to go - buses, trains, trams, underground or even boats. Just look for your nearest SL sign. If public transport doesn’t float your boat, then why not grab a bike from the hotel and head out along the many cycle paths that cover the city. Every day around 100 000 Stockholmers get on their bikes to go from A to B, and in rush traffic, they move fast. Fastest of them all is the bike couriers and “mamils” (middle-aged men in lycra), and in places like Götgatsbacken, you’ll need to watch your back; they take no prisoners. No bike-riding skills? Grab an electric scooter, roll down the street on a skateboard or take the tube.

Escape the city

Yes, Stockholm offers numerous green areas –inside and outside “tullarna”. If you feel adventurous, head outside the city and explore one of the many national parks/nature reserves, for example Tyresta, Hellasgården or Bogesundslandet. Nature is never far and it’s easy to get around if you have read through the previous part in this guide. You can go anywhere really, the freedom to roam, or ”Allemansrätten”, is the public’s right to access certain public and privately-owned land for recreation - but remember not to disturb, litter or destroy.

Ice cream for the people!

It wouldn’t be summer without copius amounts of ice cream and the great thing is that Stockholm has plenty. In the hotel, in the kiosk on the corner, or the more hip-hop ice cream gelaterias. Our favourites are: Stockholms Glasshus, Fryst, Gelateria Amore, and StikkiNikki to name a few. Ice cream is never far away when you’re in Stockholm. We also have an abundance of great flavours, from the classic chocolate and strawberry to the more acquired tastes like, yikes, garlic and asparagus. Too many choices giving you brain freeze - you can’t go wrong with vanilla.

What’s SUP

Fancy a unique view of the city while getting a great bit of exercise. SUP board paddling is growing in popularity in Stockholm and there are plenty of places to try it. Paddle along the waters of Kungsholmen or the quieter stretches of Långholmen, or try out the more hip region of Tanto in Södermalm or further afield on Sicklasjön. If you’re super supple, you can even impress the locals with a few yoga moves on your board, but watch out for the boats and the inevitable gust of wind knocking you off the back of the board though - and be sure you style it out.

Time for sleep

You’ve had your fun, now it’s time to sleep. If you want to go camping in the summer, as many Swedes do, prepare for a chilly night followed by a sweaty morning under the scorching morning sun. By all means, do not be discouraged - all we’re saying is that camping in Sweden is not for everyone. If you’re reading this article, you have probably already excluded the camping bit from your trip, and so you can relax: Downtown Camper is the only basecamp you need. In Sweden, when the sun is up for most of the day and night, you really can’t put a price on black-out curtains, let us tell you. And it just so happens that you have picked a hotel with perfect ones.

Seven Summits of Stockholm WITH

Looking for an adventure beyond anything you’ve ever experienced? We teamed up with expeditioner Renata Chlumska and podcaster Husky to offer a unique and fun gamification adventure for everyone. We selected seven peaks in Stockholm to represent The Seven Summits: When you reach the top of each height, you can unlock and listen to Renata’s stories from her expeditions - all on the app Storyspot.

On December 15, 2014, Renata became the first Swedish woman to climb the highest mountain in every continent; a feat known as “The Seven Summits”. A legendary challenge that you now can do - with Renata as your virtual guide.

- I recently celebrated 25 years as a professional adventurer. Despite the fact that I have carried out extreme expeditions on the other side of the world and are now aiming for space, I know that the adventure is always near: We don’t actually have to travel far, or leave the city, to experience them. Taking some of the world’s highest mountains to Stockholm and inspiring more people to reach new heights feels both cool and relevant. People want to get out more than ever, be active, discover their local area or new places - and this project is the perfect adventure to do yourself, or with the family, says Renata.

Listening to the stories on Storyspot, you will learn what it was really like standing on top of the world’s highest mountains. For example, when you have climbed Hammarbybacken (representing Mount Everest in this challenge), you will get access to Renata’s story about the last fighting steps up the world’s highest mountain - and the feeling of having managed to reach the roof of the world.

- The Seven Summits is a climbing adventure that few have the opportunity to complete for real, but now you get to take part in the highlights and at the same time embark on an urban journey of discovery. For a successful expedition, the basecamp is an important place and plays a central role. This is where you plan and prepare for the adventure, and this is where you return to relax and recharge. I cannot imagine a better basecamp than Downtown Camper.

Renata’s stories are available in Swedish and in English on the app Storyspot. Seven Summits of Stockholm is an adventure where you choose when, what, with whom, and how you go about it. But no matter how you choose to do the challenge, Renata will keep you company when you stand at the top and look out over the city.

- The summits aren’t going anywhere. You could do them all in one day, but there is no need to stress. If you take on one peak on each visit, it is a lovely walk through the city. Hammarbybacken, which represents Mount Everest, requires a little more time; count with a couple of hours to go there and back from the basecamp. But keep in mind, it’s supposed to represent the world’s highest mountain!

The seven heights that Renata and Magnus Ormestad, the founder of the Swedish outdoor podcast Husky, have chosen are:

Hammarbybacken Mount Everest (Asia), 8848 m

Tantolunden Aconcagua (S. America), 6965 m

Hagakullen Denali (N. America), 6190 m

Skinnarviksberget Kilimanjaro (Africa), 5895 m

Vanadislunden Elbrus (Europe) 5692 m

Vita Berget Mount Vinson (Antarctica) 4892 m

Långholmen Carstensz Pyramid (Oceania), 4884 m

- I dare say that anyone curious about adventure could do this. What you need is your mobile phone, the app, and a pair of reasonably comfortable shoes. You can do it alone or with the whole family and of course the children can come too. If this were a real expedition, let’s say to Everest for example, you need to think about a lot of course. But what’s so good about Seven Summits of Stockholm is that here, you do not need any special climbing equipment, no acclimatisation, and there’s no risk for avalanches and glacier cracks. Of course you have to watch out for the traffic, but otherwise you just have to make sure that your mobile phone is properly charged.

1. Download the app Storyspot.

2. Click on “Filters”, search for “Seven Summits” in the field.

3. Start your expedition. When you reach each top, you can unlock the spot in the app and listen to Renata’s story.

4. Ready for a challenge? Climb all 7 peaks, and collect a prize at Downtown Camper - just take a photo from each top and bring back to your basecamp.

The Rooftop Place to Be

The Nest is open every day from 10am to 8pm this summer.

The Nest is no ordinary retreat. It has been designed to boost you at a stand-alone level, with a very modern approach to wellbeing - no hushing, no pointing fingers, no fuss. This is a place where you can be yourself and kick back on your own terms while admiring the city from above.

Aching limbs after a day of exploring the city? Take the lift to the top and discover The Nest: An urban retreat and a must-see for all guests.

Leave behind the distractions of digital screens and busy traffic, embrace the vibe and discover a whole new take on wellness. Step into the sauna, shaped like a bird’s nest. Lather up in the experience showers, then head outside to the pool for a cold drink and some serious chill. Soon you will be ready for another day.

Wellness on your terms

The ”spa world” can feel a bit intimidating to many of us: “Do this, do that, and keep your voice down”. Basically, very far from how most of us want to retreat, right? The Nest offers a fresh approach to wellness. The guiding thought behind the concept is to encourage a sustainable lifestyle, one that you can actually keep up with.

Today, we live in a digital world where we deal with loads of unnatural stress factors that affect our health and the way we socialise with others. People start to become aware of the importance of taking better care of themselves; to minimise screen time and focus on the meaningful relationships in life. The Nest offers an inclusive, laid-back, and utterly stand-alone experience - a new generation of wellness.

Do it yourself

There are no traditional spa treatments in The Nest. Instead, the offering has been shaped to encompass sustainability, education, and longterm wellbeing. Hence the focus on DIY treatments, where the idea is to equip you with the know-how to best take care of yourself and your skina knowledge that can be applied and used long after you leave the hotel. Give your skin a boost with an activating skin mask, or why not stick a calming one on your partner’s face?

The DIY concept is a fun and relaxed way to take care of your skin, and a great way to reconnect as a couple.

Skin care from Moonsun Organics

The products come from body care brand Moonsun Organics - as natural as it gets. Moonsun offers award-winning holistic and sustainable skin care, and the series consist of only 10 products. All products are adaptogenic, which means that they adapt to all skin types: Hence, the series can be used by all members of the family, with less packaging, lower Co2 emissions, and a minimal impact on the climate, as a result.

It only gets better with time

Keep in mind that the tempo in The Nest will increase throughout the day. Visit early if you are looking for some peace and quiet. The music plays softer, and there are fewer people in the retreat. As the evening approaches, the music shifts to an ambient pool club vibe as the adjacent cocktail lounge opens: It’s the perfect place to enjoy cocktails and snacks in the company of good friends.

House Rules

Welcome to The Nest - a place for new experiences and inspiration. Togetherness, wellbeing, and fun is our focus here and hence, we encourage a mobile-free environment. You are not allowed to talk on your phone, but if you want to take a picture as a memory to keep from your visit, you are more than welcome. Discover flavours from around the world on our drinks menu, meet new and old friends, and enjoy great music to magical views from the top of Downtown Camper. Children are amazing, but up here, they are not our primary focus - we have other spaces in the hotel where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to socialise and regain energy. Young adults from 16 and up are welcome to visit The Nest.

How to book

As a hotel guest, you always have priority in The Nest. You also have a discount on the admission fee, but don’t forget to pre-book your visit. Towels, bathrobes, and slippers for a loan - just bring your swimsuit. Min. 16 years.
