DC Paper - Spring 2023

2023
SPRING

Think about how much we have, yet we long for something different. We love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our living standards, still we long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but every now and then, nature calls us back. We want to be spontaneous; to be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpacks - and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather, discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private - we are both, all of the time. We are the generation of diverse, curious, and exploring ’bon vivants’.

To us, luxury is never about the surface. It’s about encounters, contrasts, experiences, and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV, to hear new stories, get new impressions, or for just one moment find ourselves out of reach, offline, offgrid. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that works for both an expedition into the unknown and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

Trust your Instincts & Follow your Gut

Discover the flavours of comfort food from all over the world in Campfire Grill & Bar. The green, good, and tasty from Downtown Camper Café. The fresh and snack-friendly goodies served to awesome cocktails and astonishing views in The Nest. Dawn to dusk - there’s always a new taste to explore at Downtown Camper.

Campfire Grill & Bar

Downtown Camper’s main restaurant is where we gather around the open fire to share experiences, stories, and to enjoy good food while meeting new and old friends. It’s the hotel’s heart and social hub, serving up an eclectic abundance of comfort food from all corners of the world.

The meal as a ”social ritual” is the real focal point here, and in the kitchen we create exciting dishes close to our hearts. Inspired by childhood memories, travelling, and the shifting seasons, we call our food concept ”comfort food” as it puts a smile on your face and spreads joy, love, and comfort.

At Campfire, we use the elemental force of fire and extract the flavours of the flames. Here, the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversations, laughter, and music.

Campfire is an open, cosy and warm meeting place for both Stockholmers and hotel guests, bringing back an including, spontaneous, and honest social code. Our grilled concept is a big flirt with the food truck trend, a conviction that good food is all about enhancing simple and natural flavours. Meals you can share with your friends and family, talk about, taste from each other’s plates, and simply enjoy together.

Did you know we offset the emissions from all the meat we buy, through tree planting? This way, we do not only support small-scale farmers in Bolivia by enabling them to live off the trees, but the project also improves biodiversity in the Amazon region with super climate benefits as a result.

In collaboration with ZeroMission and Plan Vivo.

The Nest Cocktail Lounge

When it’s ”cocktail o’clock”, take a hike up to visit Downtown Camper’s pride and joy - the rooftop bar that sits on top of the building. A friendly, laid-back ambience, great music, fresh food, and well-made, bespoke cocktails await you here.

The Nest offers astonishing views of the city and tasty drinks created with much care and attention to detail. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, the creative bar team uses seasonal ingredients in their own homemade syrups and infusions to differentiate the taste experience and offer guests something truly unique. As pioneers of the new low-ABV trend in mixology, The Nest also offers an impressing list of low-alcohol / non-alcoholic drinks and mocktails for the guest who wishes to go easy on the liquor. Whether

Downtown Camper Café Food, friends, and coffee. Here’s a social hotspot to add to your list; Downtown Camper Café, located on the backside of the hotel. As usual at Downtown Camper, sustainability, wellbeing, and togetherness are important focal points and the offering has been carefully selected accordingly.

Filled to the brim with goodies, the menu is largely plant-based and vegetarian, with nutritious, healthy, and beautiful food that encourages an all-together sustainable lifestyle. Even the furniture and utensils have been hand picked and are made of recycled or rescued materials. Just the way we like it.

Located on one of Stockholm’s most happening walking streets, Drottninggatan, the café is a perfect pitstop on your city expedition, offering everything from all-day breakfast and tasty lunch food to coffee, locally produced beer, biodynamic wines and organic soft drinks.

Downtown Camper Café is a given hangout for the local coworking community and travellers that come from near and far. Get there by taking the lifts to floor -2, or do the walk around the corner outside.

you’re an Old Fashioned, a Shirley Temple, or something less decided, there’s something here to tease your taste buds. The food concept is still very “Downtown Camper”, although it takes a slightly different turn. Here, we have composed a modern and recognisable menu consisting of fresh food and savoury snacks that fit very well in the lounge environment. It’s high in quality, flavours, and textures – food that appeals to both bar and wellness guests, and that is easy to enjoy in a casual environment.

With its personal style, earthy tones, and mile-wide views, The Nest is a hidden gem in the heart of the city, a hide-away for the knackered explorer, and a second livingroom for many locals. To go here, hop in the lift and press ”9”. It will take you straight up to cocktail heaven.

holm and finish with breakfast in Campfire. If your shoes are worn out, or if you just feel like trying on a new pair, you can borrow a pair from Runners’ Corner in the lobby.

We meet up in the lobby before the run - by then, you’ll need to be changed and ready to go. Belongings can be stored in our luggage room. Those who wish can enjoy a shower in our wellness area after the run. No sign-up required, just show up with a smile.

The Stockholm Survival Guide

Stockholm is famous for its stunning architecture, the cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan, its Baltic Sea archipelago, freezing temperatures, as well as a host of modern and historical attractions. What’s less known are the quirky cultural nuances, which make Sweden so wonderfully unique. Here are seven cultural insights for our newest residents and visitors.

Funny

words and phrases

There are many mesmerising sights to absorb when walking the streets of Stockholm, not least the handsome men and women - everyone is beautiful. But it won’t be long before the hilarious named road signs and funny phrases catch your attention. For all us non-Swedes the sight of ’infart’ (a parking lot entrance), ’utfart’ (exit), ’fartkontroll’ (speed control), and ’slutstation’ (end station), Willy’s (supermarket) is enough to send us into a fit of giggles. And the funny words don’t stop there! There are many words, which confused, could lead to some very embarrassing situations. If a Swede asks you “sex hos mig” (sex/ six at my place), you might want to check their intentions. However, the chances are they just want you to come over at 6 o’clock, as sex means two things, the number 6 and yes, sex. They probably seem preoccupied with ladies underwear, continually referring to things as ‘bra’, but this simply means ‘good’. Saying they need to ‘kiss’ (pee) when they actually just need a wee. It’s all very confusing but adds a comical element to learning Swedish.

Need-to-know house rules

If you’ve walked the streets of Stockholm during the winter months, you’ll know how dirty it gets once the rain and snow starts, especially when the gritters come out. So it’s not surprising then, that as a general rule, all Swedish homes expect you to remove your shoes. If like me, a British expat, you’re used to traipsing your way around houses in your outdoor shoes, then this is a rule to get acquainted with fast. This rule also extends to gyms, where they expect you to walk to the gym wearing your outdoor shoes and then change into your pair of indoor training shoes upon arriving. Yes, you’re going to need that extra muscle to carry your gym bag! You may have also noticed,

on arriving in your hotel room, the single duvet covers. The Swedish aren’t killers of romance, I promise. In the freezing minus temperatures that Sweden gets to, in Stockholm an average low of -4 degrees in the winter, do you want your partner stealing the bed cover? We didn’t think so. Single duvets are all about survival.

Naked ambition

Swedes are way more comfortable with nudity than just about anywhere else in the world (well, them and the other sauna-loving nations). In any other country, if you stripped off naked and entered the sauna, you’d be met with shrieks of surprise and blushing red faces. It’s not uncommon in Sweden, however, to strip off and go skinny dipping in the open water with your friends and family. However, be forewarned, there are designated spots; you can’t just strip off anywhere. It’s also not uncommon to see men and women, completely naked, having a good old chit chat in the changing rooms at gyms and swimming houses, seemingly unfazed by their nakedness. But don’t fear though, Downtown Camper has a strictly ‘bathing suit only’ policy, so you won’t be bathing in your birthday suit on your visit.

Get social, join a club

Sweden can be a hard place to settle as a newcomer, particularly in the long, dark, and cold winter months. As spring’s now approaching, it’s a perfect time to join a club and get meeting other expats and sociable Swedes. Get a taster of run club life with DC Running Club, who run every Wednesday morning from Downtown Camper. Alternatively, you could try Downtown Camper’s yoga, offered every Thursday-Saturday. Or why not join one of the many activities on Meetup? A community made out of sharing experiences and making new friends. With over 260 meetups located in Stockholm, there are a large variety of get-togethers to choose from; you can even start your own.

Swedish godis

Sweet tooth? In most countries pick n’ mix is intended mainly for children. Not in Sweden. No, the Swedes are mad for their candy with usually two or more aisles in the supermarket

entirely dedicated to every type of candy you could possibly dream of. However, this is usually limited to Saturday’s ‘Lördagsgodis’ (Saturday candy), when the majority of candy is purchased. Swedes consume approximately 15 kilograms of candy per person per year. That’s a whole lot of candy! Unlike other nations, at Easter, the Swedes do not celebrate with branded chocolate eggs but beautifully decorated paper shell eggs, crammed full of sweets. It’s surprising then that Swedes are some of the healthiest people on the planet.

Systembolaget

If you’ve ever been invited to an inexperienced expat’s housewarming party, you’re probably familiar with that last-minute panicked message. This is when the host realises they haven’t gone to the only store in Sweden you can purchase alcohol from, Systembolaget, and lo and behold now need you to bring your own drinks. Happens all the time! One friend of mine invited her friends for a ’prosecco and pancakes evening’, which was a great idea until she forgot to purchase the prosecco in time. Sweden is highly regulated when it comes to the sale of alcoholic drinks stronger than 3.5%. Systembolaget is government-owned and has the monopoly of sales in Sweden. The minimum purchase age at Systembolaget is 20, but 18 in licensed restaurants and bars. So take your ID and be sure to check the opening times.

Queue like a Swede

Like the British, Swedes are no strangers to queuing. However, Sweden has turned this into an Olympic sport. The Swedish are sticklers for rationality and order, and the queuing system is no exception; there are seemingly queues for everything. While most Swedes won’t confront you, you will feel the sting of their angry stares should you make the ultimate mistake of pushing in line. Or just simply forgetting to take one of the many numbered tickets you find in any number of shops. Our advice - always check upon entering a supermarket, electrical shop, doctor’s surgery, vets, Migrationsverket, or a post office, you get my point, if there’s a ticket machine.

The Nest

The Nest is no ordinary retreat. It has been designed to boost you at a stand-alone level, with a very modern approach to wellbeing - no hushing, no pointing fingers, no fuss. This is a place where you can be yourself and kick back on your own terms while admiring the city from above.

Aching limbs after a day of exploring the city? Take the lift to the top and discover The Nest: An urban retreat and a must-see for all guests.

Leave behind the distractions of digital screens and busy traffic, embrace the vibe and discover a whole new take on wellness. Step into the sauna, shaped like a bird’s nest. Lather up in the experience showers, then head outside to the pool for a cold drink and some serious chill. Soon you will be ready for another day.

Wellness on your terms

The ”spa world” can feel a bit intimidating to many of us: “Do this, do that, and keep your voice down”. Basically, very far from how most of us want to retreat, right? The Nest offers a fresh approach to wellness. The guiding thought behind the concept is to encourage a sustainable lifestyle, one that you can actually keep up with.

Today, we live in a digital world where we deal with loads of unnatural stress factors that affect our health and the way we socialise with others. People start to become aware of the importance of taking better care of themselves; to minimise screen time and focus on the meaningful relationships in life. The Nest offers an inclusive, laid-back, and utterly stand-alone experience - a new generation of wellness.

Do it yourself

There are no traditional spa treatments in The Nest. Instead, the offering has been shaped to encompass sustainability, education, and longterm wellbeing. Hence, the focus on DIY treatments, where the idea is to equip you with the know-how to best take care of yourself and your skina knowledge that can be applied and used long after you leave the hotel.

Skin care from Moonsun Organics

Our products come from body care brand Moonsun Organics - as natural as it gets. Moonsun offers award-winning holistic and sustainable skin care, and the series consist of only 10 products. All products are adaptogenic, which means that they adapt to all skin types: Hence, the series can be used by all members of the family, with less packaging, lower Co2 emissions, and a minimal impact on the climate, as a result.

It only gets better with time

Keep in mind that the tempo in The Nest will increase throughout the day. Visit early if you are looking for some peace and quiet. The music plays softer, and there are fewer people in the retreat. As the evening approaches, the music shifts to an ambient pool club vibe as the adjacent cocktail lounge opens: It’s the perfect place to enjoy cocktails and snacks in the company of good friends.

House Rules

Welcome to The Nest - a place for new experiences and inspiration. Togetherness, wellbeing, and fun is our focus here and hence, we encourage a mobile-free environment. You are not allowed to talk on your phone, but if you want to take a picture as a memory to keep from your visit, you are more than welcome. Discover flavours from around the world on our drinks menu, meet new and old friends, and enjoy great music to magical views from the top of Downtown Camper. Children are amazing, but up here, they are not our primary focus - we have other spaces in the hotel where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to socialise and regain energy. Young adults from 16 and up are welcome to visit The Nest.

How to book

As a hotel guest, you always have priority in The Nest. You also have a discount on the admission fee, but don’t forget to pre-book your visit. Towels, bathrobes, and slippers are provided - just bring your swimsuit. Min. 16 years.

OUR URBAN
RETREAT

OTTO NORIN Photo Exhibition

We are proud to present an exclusive photo exhibition with photographer / videographer Otto Norin in The Nest this spring. Eleven fascinating photos depicting breath-taking landscapes and the astonishing achievements of adventure seekers around the world. This is his first ever exhibition, and it happens at Downtown Camper. Visit from March to end of June, in the cocktail lounge on floor nine.

Born and raised in Vikarbyn, Dalarna, Otto grew up as an active kid who never could sit still – riding his skateboard, BMX, or snowboard, he full-throttled his way through life. It’s there, in the ski slopes of Dalarna, his career was decided for him, as he started capturing his snowboarding friends on camera. Educated at Hyper Island, he went on to work on several kinds of commercial projects, yet remaining true to his real passion - the outdoors.

Otto works as a photographer and videographer for some of the world’s most exciting and demanding adventure races. In order to keep up with the contestants and get the best pictures, he needs to secure the right backdrop. This means moving around the track searching for the perfect position - whether that’s 2 km away, or three thirds into the race. It calls for a certain physical form, as he usually gets around on his bike or by running. With him, he takes a handheld camera, a drone, and a mobile phone.

“These challenges can be everything from 24 hours to 7 days long, so I cover large areas. As an example, when I was shooting for Raid in France in the French Alps, I had to run for five hours to get to where I was going. But it’s part of the job: I have to be creative with what I have, and the backdrop is one of the things I can control. When I’m out at work, my motto is “hurry up, and wait” - I go to my position, pick an angle, set up the camera, and wait for the teams to arrive.”

Of course, he can never influence, disturb, or direct the people he is there to capture. The very essence of his work is catching the moment. Working under these conditions requires patience, time, and a large memory card. And it doesn’t hurt with a little luck:

”Suddenly it’s there, that one moment you are waiting for. Like when I was following athlete Johan Hasselmark on his bicycle in Norrland. All of a sudden, a reindeer shows up out of nowhere, and runs next to Johan’s bike. It’s just for a short minute or so, but I managed to get my camera out just as the reindeer stopped and turned to look at us. A second later it’s off into the forrest again.”

This is the first time Otto’s photography has been printed for an independent exhibition. Each picture has been chosen with great care - what started with a first selection of 120 pictures, has been boiled down to just 11. Prepare to be blown away by natural landscapes of astonishing beauty, truly inspirational achievements, and mind-boggling stories.

“With these photos, I hope to inspire people to seek out an adventure, whether it’s in the mountains or the archipelago, or somewhere else: There are so many beautiful and amazing places to explore, even in your close vicinity. If you learn to love nature, you will be rich – you will want to take care of it, and spend time in it. But this is also a story about incredible achievements – to finish a 4 day race on 5 hours of sleep only. That feeling of happiness, victory, determination is what I want to capture. That’s inspiring, and proves that anything is possible.”
