DC Paper - Winter 2023/24

W INTE R 23/24

Think about how much we have, yet we long for something different. We love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our living standards, still we long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but every now and then, nature calls us back. We want to be spontaneous; to be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpacks - and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather, discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private - we are both, all of the time. We are the generation of diverse, curious, and exploring ’bon vivants’. To us, luxury is never about the surface. It’s about encounters, contrasts, experiences, and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV, to hear new stories, get new impressions, or for just one moment find ourselves out of reach, offline, offgrid. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that works for both an expedition into the unknown and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

The fire is at the core of Campfire bar and restaurant. Here you’ll find grilled butter, grilled marshmallows, charcoal grilled foods and also, cocktails with a touch of fire.

Pop by Campfire bar for a drink after work, a weekend all-nighter or for a bite to eat with a date. The cosy but buzzing atmosphere make the perfect winter hideaway spot.

Cocktail hour with Vale Some people are hard to keep up with. Vale is one of those people. Although he gives you a calm impression, his story suggests that his life has been anything but that. As a young civil engeneer graduate in Croatia, Vale longed for a change of scenery before ”real life” begun. Fast forward a decade and we find Vale in Campfire Bar at Downtown Camper, constantly experimenting, creating and mixing magic brews as keen as a scientist on a mission - leading the team behind the success story. Vale, hi! Tell us, what’s the attraction of working in a bar? Well, most of the time it’s hard work and long days, it’s still all worth it because we have such a good time. You get to know so many different personalities, every day in fact, and that’s the secret answer to the mysterious appeal of this job. What’s it like working at Campfire? It feels like having guests in your own living room. You’ve got all the elements: the open fire, the friendly camping spirit together with the relaxed and ’homey’ ambience. And my colleagues are the best. We have the best mix of experiences and backgrounds - a true family. Tell us more about Campfire Our mission is to make sure the cocktails surprise and refresh you in one way or another. We have a highly diverse drinks list to satisfy the palate of our many guests, e.g. organic, natural wine, vegan beer and gluten-free alternatives. We update the drinks list with fun and surprising cocktails four times a year to keep it interesting for the guests, and also according to the season. We combine simple flavours and make our own homemade syrups and infusions. Why is Campfire’s bar worth a visit? The quality of the cocktails and the masterminds behind them. Whether you are interested in a classic or experimental cocktail, or simply want to enjoy a hot chocolate by the fire, we have our minds set on you leaving Campfire feeling better than you did before you came in. What is your favourite cocktail on the menu? I can’t really choose, I truly love them all. But I can really recommend ordering up some marshmallows to the grill over the open fire, to go with your cocktail. Meet Vale and the rest of the bar team at Campfire bar, and don’t forget to pop by The Nest on the 9th floor for more innovative drinks and cocktails.

Campfire - a buzzing living room for locals and travellers Downtown Camper’s main restaurant, Campfire, is where we gather around the open fire to share experiences, stories, and to enjoy good food with new and old friends. It’s the hotel’s heart and social hub, serving up an eclectic abundance of comfort food from all corners of the world. The meal as a social ritual is top of mind here, and in the kitchen we create exciting dishes that are close to our hearts. Inspired by childhood memories, places we’ve been, and the shifting seasons, we call our food concept ”comfort food” - the kind of food that puts a smile on your face and spreads joy, love, and comfort. Here, the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversations, laughter, and music. Campfire is an open, cosy, and warm meeting place for both Stockholmers and hotel guests, with an aim to bring back an including and spontaneous social code. Here, we use the elemental force of fire and extract the smoky flavours from the charcoal. Our grilled concept is a big flirt with the food truck culture, a conviction that good food is all about enhancing simple and natural flavours: Meals you can share with your friends and family, talk about, taste from each other’s plates, and simply enjoy together.

Marshmallow Moment

Saturdays 11.00-14.30

Monday-Wednesday & Fridays 18.00-19.00

We’re going deep into the Swedish forest. On a search for eternal life... Oh well, maybe not. But we’re hoping to benefit from its healing properties. Our expedition takes a turn down south, into an awesome nature reserve called Nackareservatet. A quick stop before pushing on to our final destination, Hellasgården. Here we’ll do a short mindfulness session to clear our minds. When we feel ready, we change into our swimwear for a dip in the lake (if you dare), followed

by a hot sauna session to warm up. Amazing for both mind and body - viking style. For all levels. Kids welcome in parent’s company. This activity takes about 3.5 hours. Ticket for public transport is not included. Dress accordingly. We will provide you with towels and bathrobe. We meet up by the lifestyle desk in the lobby. The best things in life are free, but please register in advance so we know you’re coming. Sign up at the reception desk, or email: lifestyleconcierge@scandichotels.com

Do handmade cocktails, fluffy treats, and the crackling of an open fire tickle your fancy? You’re not alone, it’s one of our favourite things too. Join us as we gather around the campfire for an hour of marshmallow roasting. Who knows, maybe you’ll turn some strangers into friends.

Everyone is welcome (kids in parent’s company). From 18.00, you can collect your own marshmallow kit at the bar. Creatives getting coffee Tuesdays 18.30-20.00 We are more free than ever to become whatever we want, but often find ourselves stuck in the hamster wheel. Do you have a creative dream that you would like to explore? Or are you a curious soul constantly in search of new things to try? Take this opportunity to meet other creative dreamers to open that inspirational door of yours.

Creatives getting coffee is a group of creative souls that meet on a weekly basis to explore all things creativity. Different themes and topics each week. Visit our Facebook event page @Downtowncamper to see the weekly schedule. Sounds like something for you? Meet up in Camper Café on -2.

OR, JUST GO PLOGGING Start your day like a hero - this is a proper boost of confidence. Grab a Plogga bag from the lifestyle desk in the lobby, and go for a treasure hunt. Try to pick as much rubbish from the streets as you can fit into your bag. When your bag is full, bring it back to the hotel and hand it in: You can now claim an awesome reward: A DC tote bag filled with beautiful body care products from our own line Downtown Mist. Happy hunting, and nature says thanks. This is a collaboration with @Plogga.

The Sustainability Guide 12 LIFEHACKS FOR A LIVING PLANET

It can be tricky to navigate the “new” reality knowing that we have to change our ways to keep global warming down to a minimum. But be lost no more! We spoke to Naturskyddsföreningen who are experts at this stuff, and turns out, there are several easy ways to adopt a sustainable lifestyle with quite a small effort. So here you go; a shortlist of the very best things you can do on an individual level to minimise your environmental footprint and become a proper modern person, fit for the 2020s. Let’s go!

Be nosy As a consumer, you have the ultimate power to impact brands and retailers. Be curious and well-informed; ask questions to show that you care about their ethical and environmental policies. Also ask if there are available spare parts for the product you consider purchasing - if the retailer offers spare parts, they probably have a more circular and sustainable attitude. And if your newly-purchased item breaks, send it back immediately and have the vendor repair it for you. Simply put, shop with care for people and planet. More bang for the buck Buy stuff with a good second-hand value. The biggest environmental impact is at production level, so put your things to good use and make sure they get a long life. Think circular: A basic principle is to make sure the stuff you buy can be sold again once you get tired of them, and shop second hand if you can. Support your local community, make your favourites last longer, and use the services of skillful shoemakers and tailors. Streamline your closet Would you pay 500 sek for a sweater you will wear only once? You probably have stuff in your closet that you never really use, and you’re not alone. Reclaim control of your wardrobe – tag your clothes and make a note every time you use it. Could it be that it’s a better idea to buy something a bit more expensive / high quality that you will use often, instead of fast fashion that you will only use once or twice? Less energy, more fun The rising energy prices made many of us consider our use of electricity. Thankfully, there are many ways to cut costs and this is an area where you can make a huge difference whilst saving loads of money! Energy production stands for almost a third of global emissions, so if you choose energy from

renewable sources you’re half way there. Did you know that the electricity price goes up and down depending on the time of the day? Take control, make it a sport to use as little as you can, and just imagine all the fun you will have for the money you save. You can follow your efforts and progress on the bills, or why not invest in a monitor to follow your energy use in real time? Let’s calculate! Some numbers for you: The consumer-based emissions are on average nine tons Co2 / person and year. Five of which are from consumption. If we are to stop at 1,5 degrees global warming (the target set in the Paris agreement), we have to arrive at one ton / person and year. You get our point, something has to be done, so why wait? Calculate your emissions in a climate calculator, and see where you as a person / household can make the biggest change. Is the secret to your sustainable lifestyle to take the train instead of the plane, eat more plant-based, or shop second hand? Talk about it Become a role model. Create a new environmental habit and see how you can change attitudes in your inner circle of people. Remember, word of mouth is the most effective and credible promotion. If you want to do more, talk to your local community and be a force to be reckoned with. Is your building renewing their electricity supply contract? Push for a green option! Sharing is caring Do as you do when you stay in a hotel, and share things with other people. Try one of the many peer-to-peer services available today. Pinning up some new shelves on the wall? Rent a screwdriver. Invited to a wedding, nothing to wear? Rent a designer dress. And honestly, why buy an expensive car if you can rent one across the street when you need it? Every bite matters If you can’t skip the beef altogether – choose a local, free-range or eco-labelled meat from animals that graze out in the open. Free-range cattle actually contribute to an open cultural landscape, by maintaining important biotopes for other species, and this has a positive impact on the biodiversity. If you can skip the meat, why not have a fresh veggie barbeque? There are thousands of yummy recipes and tips out there, and with a tasty BBQ sauce it’s every bit as delicious as steak - and so much more nutritious.

No ticket to ride You don’t need a ticket to have an adventure. There are over 5000 natural reserves in Sweden, all of which are contributing to the protection of wildlife and nature. If you want to experience Sweden’s most precious natural environments, steer your steps in the direction of a National Park; we’ve got no less than 30 of them in this country! Why not start with Tyresta, just south of Stockholm? It’s the largest old-growth forest this side of Dalälven. Not enough options? Do it yourself! Sometimes what’s on offer in the stores is simply not good enough. Time to take matters into your own hands and - while you’re at it - learn something new. Like baking your favourite bread for example. In Sweden, there are loads of good, organic, and locally produced flour on the market, and baking is extremely hip at the moment: During the pandemic, there was a huge surge in people who started baking and selling online. And to be honest; what tops warm, freshly baked bread? Check your investments Do you know who is using your money? The financial industry makes it possible to directly or indirectly support industries that are far from sustainable. You could, through your savings, be supporting a huge environmental culprit without knowing about it. Demand transparency from your banker and make sure you invest in sustainable and ethical industries and companies. It’s as simple as this; if no one invests in the baddies, they will eventually cease to exist. Dive into a new world Get to know the world around you - read a book about bugs! There are loads of awesome options and here’s a shortlist for you: “Notes From A Summer Cottage” by Nina Burton, “Extraordinary Insects” by Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson, “The History Of Bees” by Maja Lunde, and “The Garden Jungle” by Dave Goulson. By learning more about all the little critters that share our planet, you will widen your own horizon and have a new perspective on just how much we depend on them for our own survival. These books offer moments of recognition, awe, and not to mention - fits of giggles!

A warm thank you to Naturskyddsföreningen for helping us out with this awesome guide.

The Nest YOUR WINTER HIDEAWAY

The Nest is no ordinary retreat. It has been designed to boost you at a stand-alone level, with a very modern approach to wellbeing - no hushing, no pointing fingers, no fuss. This is a place where you can be yourself and kick back on your own terms while admiring the city from above. Aching limbs after a day of exploring the city? Take the lift to the top and discover The Nest: An urban retreat and a must-see for all guests. Leave behind the distractions of digital screens and busy traffic, embrace the vibe and discover a whole new take on wellness. Step into the sauna, shaped like a bird’s nest. Lather up in the experience showers, then head outside to the pool for a cold drink and some serious chill. Soon you will be ready for another day. Wellness on your terms The ”spa world” can feel a bit intimidating to many of us: “Do this, do that, and keep your voice down”. Basically, very far from how most of us want to retreat, right? The Nest offers a fresh approach to wellness. The guiding thought behind the concept is to encourage a sustainable lifestyle - one that you can keep up with. Today, we live in a digital world where we deal with loads of unnatural stress factors that affect our health and the way we socialise with others. People start to become aware of the importance of taking better care of themselves; to minimise screen time and focus on the meaningful relationships in life. The Nest offers an inclusive, laid-back and utterly stand-alone experience - a new generation of wellness. Do it yourself There are no traditional spa treatments in The Nest. Instead, the offering has been shaped to encompass sustainability, education and longterm wellbeing. Hence, the focus on DIY treatments, where

the idea is to equip you with the know-how to best take care of yourself and your skin a knowledge that can be applied and used long after you leave the hotel. Our products come from holistic bodycare brand Moonsun Organics - as natural as it gets.

We have a broad selection of hot drinks. Enjoy our DC Gluhwein, hot chocolate and our newest favourite, the tipsy tea.

It only gets better with time Another important thing to remember is that the tempo in The Nest will increase throughout the day. Visit early if you are looking for some peace and quiet. The music plays softer, and there are fewer people in the retreat. As the evening approaches, the music shifts to an ambient pool club vibe as the adjacent cocktail lounge opens. It’s the perfect time and place for an aperitif in the company of good friends. House Rules Welcome to The Nest - a place for new experiences and inspiration. Togetherness, wellbeing and fun is our focus here and hence, we encourage a mobile-free environment. You are not allowed to talk on your phone, but if you want to take a picture as a memory to keep from your visit, you are more than welcome. Discover flavours from around the world on our drinks menu, meet new and old friends, and enjoy great music to magical views from the top of Downtown Camper. Children are amazing, but up here, they are not our primary focus - we have other spaces in the hotel where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to socialise and regain energy. Young adults from 16 and up are welcome to visit The Nest. How to book As a hotel guest, you always have priority in The Nest. You also have a discount on the admission fee, but don’t forget to pre-book your visit. Towels, bathrobes and slippers are provided - just bring your swimsuit. Don’t have one? Buy one at The Nest. Min. 16 years. Book your visit on: boka.se/thenestwellness

Don’t miss the cold shower station. A given choice for those with viking ambitions.
