DC Paper - Spring 2024

SPRING 2024

Think about how much we have, yet we long for something different. We love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our living standards, still we long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but every now and then, nature calls us back. We want to be spontaneous; to be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpacks - and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather, discover new paths in the forrest, new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private - we are both, all of the time. We are the generation of diverse, curious and exploring ’bon vivants’.

To us, luxury is never about the surface. It’s about encounters, contrasts, experiences and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV, to hear new stories, get new impressions, or for just one moment find ourselves out of reach, offline, offgrid. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that works for both an expedition into the unknown and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

Trust your Instincts, Follow your Gut

Discover the flavours of comfort food from all over the world in Campfire Grill & Bar, the green, good and tasty from Downtown Camper Café, and magic brews and cocktails along with astonishing views in The Nest.

From dawn to dusk - there’s a new taste experience to be had at Downtown Camper.

Campfire Grill & Bar

Downtown Camper’s main restaurant is where we gather around the open fire to share experiences, stories and to enjoy good food while meeting new and old friends. It’s the hotel’s heart and social hub, serving up an eclectic abundance of comfort food from all corners of the world.

The meal as a ”social ritual” is the real focal point here, and in the kitchen we create exciting dishes close to our hearts. Inspired by childhood memories, travelling, and the shifting seasons, we call our food concept ”comfort food” as it puts a smile on your face and spreads joy, love and comfort.

At Campfire, we use the elemental force of fire and extract the flavours of the flames. Here, the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversations, laughter and music.

Campfire is an open, cosy and warm meeting place for both Stockholmers and hotel guests, bringing back an including, spontaneous and honest social code. Our grilled concept is a big flirt with the food truck trend, a conviction that good food is all about enhancing simple and natural flavours. Meals you can share with your friends and family, talk about, taste from each other’s plates, and simply enjoy together.

Did you know we offset the emissions from all the meat we buy, through tree planting? This way, we do not only support small-scale farmers in Bolivia by enabling them to live off the trees, but the project also improves biodiversity in the Amazon region with super climate benefits as a result.

In collaboration with ZeroMission and Plan Vivo.

The Nest Cocktail Lounge

When it’s ”cocktail o’clock” - take a hike up to visit Downtown Camper’s pride and joy, the rooftop bar that sits on top of the building. A friendly, laid-back ambience, great music, and well-made, bespoke cocktails await you here.

The Nest offers astonishing views of the city and tasty drinks created with much care and attention to detail. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, the creative bar team uses seasonal ingredients in their own homemade syrups and infusions to differentiate the taste experience and offer guests something truly unique. As pioneers of the low-ABV trend in mixology, The Nest also offers an impressing list of low-alcohol / non-alcoholic drinks

Camper Café

Food, friends and coffee. Here’s a new social hotspot to add to your list; Downtown Camper Café, located on the backside of the hotel. As usual at Downtown Camper, sustainability, well-being and togetherness are important focal points and the offering has been carefully selected accordingly.

Filled to the brim with goodies, the menu is filled with nutritious, healthy and beautiful food that encourages an all-together sustainable lifestyle. Even the furniture and utensils have been hand picked and are made of recycled or rescued materials. Just the way we like it.

Located on one of Stockholm’s busiest walking streets, Drottninggatan, the café is a perfect pitstop on your city expedition, offering everything from all-day breakfast and tasty lunch food to coffee, beer, tasty wines and cooling soft drinks.

Downtown Camper Café is a given hangout for the local coworking community and travellers that come from near and far.

Get there by taking the lifts to floor -2, or do the walk around the corner outside.

and mocktails for the guest who wishes to go easy on the liquor. Whether you’re an Old Fashioned, a Shirley Temple or something less decided, there’s something here to tease your taste buds. Food options range from classic bar snacks and charcuteries to camper-style pizzas.

With its personal style, earthy tones and mile-wide views, The Nest is a hidden gem in the heart of the city, a hide-away for the knackered explorer, and a second livingroom for many locals. To go here, hop in the lift and press ”9”. It will take you straight up to cocktail heaven.

OUR TOP PICKS

Every day there’s something new to explore here at Downtown Camper - check out all activities on the opposite page. Here are three of our personal favourites.

Forest Bathing

Saturdays 09.00-12.30

We’re going deep into the Swedish forest. On a search for eternal life... Oh well, maybe not. But we’re hoping to benefit from its healing properties. And we promise you’ll appreciate the colourful season in all its glory.

Our expedition takes a turn down south, into an awesome nature reserve called Nackareservatet. Rich and diverse nature and buzzing wildlife await us here, as we hike down to the freshwater spring. A quick stop before pushing on to our final destination, the lake.

Here we’ll do a mindfulness session to clear our minds, and there’s also time for a quick swim in the lake (if you dare).

For all levels. Kids welcome in parent’s company. This activity takes about 3.5 hours (public transport round trip incl.) Dress accordingly and bring an extra jumper / sweater. We meet up by the lifestyle desk in the lobby.

The best things in life are free, but please register in advance so we know you’re coming. Sign up at the reception desk, or email: lifestyleconcierge@scandichotels.com

High Rope Course

Fridays 12.45-15.45

We live by our core values Nature, Togetherness, Explore and Urban. All we do ties back to those words, sometimes more and sometimes less. In this case, more.

Let’s take you to new heights by inviting you to our friends at @aventyrsbananstockholm. This high rope course is located just outside of the city, in the middle of the forest. The perfect spot for a pre-weekend challenge.

The course is between five and eleven meters high and built in three different loops. If that isn’t

Creatives getting coffee

Tuesdays 18.30-20.00

We are more free than ever to become whatever we want, but often find ourselves stuck in the hamster wheel. Do you have a creative dream that you would like to explore? Or are you a curious soul constantly in search of new things to try? Take this opportunity to meet other creative dreamers to open that inspirational door of yours. Who knows, you might sit on the next best-selling idea.

OR, JUST GO PLOGGING

enough to quench your thirst for adventure, you finish the course by ziplining back down.

Meet-up in the lobby. Bring your public transport ticket, we’ll take care of the rest. Come with a friend, your travel mate or join by yourself and make new friends. Age limit: 13.

This activity takes about 3 hours (public transport round trip incl.)

Let the fun begin! Sign up at the reception desk, or email: lifestyleconcierge@scandichotels.com.

Creatives getting coffee is a group of creative souls that meet on a weekly basis to explore, learn, and talk all things creativity.

Different themes and topics each week. Visit our Facebook event page @Downtowncamper to see the weekly schedule. Sound like something for you? Meet-up in the lobby.

Start your day like a hero - this is a proper boost of confidence. Grab a Plogga bag from the lifestyle desk in the lobby, and go for a treasure hunt. Try to pick as much rubbish from the streets as you can fit into your bag. When your bag is full, bring it back to the hotel and hand it in: You can now claim an awesome reward: A DC tote bag filled with beautiful body care products from our own line Downtown Mist. Happy hunting, and nature says thanks. This is a collaboration with @Plogga.

When in Stockholm - A Survival Guide

Stockholm, like any other city, has its peculiarities. The Swedish capital is famous for its stunning architecture, its archipelago, shifting weather, as well as a host of modern and historical attractions. What’s less known are the quirky cultural nuances, which make Sweden so wonderfully unique. Here are seven tips that will help you get into the game quicker. Relax, soon you’ll blend in like a proper local.

Sorry, what?

It won’t be long before the hilarious named road signs and funny phrases catch your attention. For all non-Swedes, the sight of ’infart’ (a parking lot entrance), ’utfart’ (exit), ’fartkontroll’ (speed control), and ’slutstation’ (end station), Willy’s (supermarket) is enough to send us into a fit of giggles. And the funny words don’t stop there! There are many words, which confused, could lead to some very embarrassing situations. If a Swede asks you “sex hos mig” (sex/six at my place), you might want to check their intentions. However, the chances are they just want you to come over at 6 o’clock, as sex means two things, the number 6 and yes, sex. They probably seem preoccupied with ladies underwear, continually referring to things as ‘bra’, but this simply means ‘good’. Saying they need to ‘kiss’ (pee) when they actually just need a wee. It’s all very confusing but adds a comical element to learning Swedish.

Naked ambition

Swedes are way more comfortable with nudity than just about anywhere else in the world (well, them and the other sauna-loving nations). In any other country, if you stripped off naked and entered the sauna, you’d be met with shrieks of surprise and blushing red faces. It’s not uncommon in Sweden, however, to strip off and go skinny dip -

ping in the open water with your friends and family. However, be forewarned, there are designated spots; you can’t just strip off anywhere. It’s also not uncommon to see men and women, completely naked, having a good old chit chat in the changing rooms at gyms and swimming houses, seemingly unfazed by their nakedness. But don’t fear, Downtown Camper has a strictly ‘bathing suit only’ policy, so you’re safe from embarrassment here.

Allemansrätten

The freedom to roam, or ”everyman’s right”, is the general public’s right to access certain public or privately-owned land for recreation and exercise. The Swedes exercise this general human right to its maximum; enjoying the freedom to roam in the Swedish mountains, coastlines and archipelago. There are some important dos and don’ts to bear in mind before venturing out into the wilderness. You can camp, walk, cycle, fish, swim on any land except private gardens, near a dwelling or land under cultivation. You must take care of nature and wildlife and show consideration to landowners and others enjoying the countryside. In short, don’t disturb, litter or destroy.

Just keep walking

Stockholmers consider themselves early adopters. They quickly absorb the latest, greatest trends and pay no attention to the fact that they live in a cold distant corner of Europe. Instead they act like they live in Manhattan. But they never seem to be able to master all the codes of metropolitan living: Like passing a person on the street without bumping into them. In the big cities like New York and London, you rarely see any collisions between two pedestrians, but in Stockholm they can get caught in an awkward rocking back and forth situation, where as one person moves to the right, the other

moves to the left and so on until one person is able to break the spell and continue walking. Our advice here? Be safe and just keep walking.

Learn the importance of ‘mys’

The Danes have their ‘hygge’ and us Swedes we have our ‘mys’. The word roughly translates to the English ‘cosiness’ or ‘snuggle’. Why not cosy up in bed and let yourself be swept away by some Stockholm fiction classics: Jens Lapidus’ hardcore Stockholm Noir trilogy, Bo Widerberg’s film ‘Mannen på Taket’ or ‘Stockholm’, starring Ethan Hawke and Noomi Rapace. The film is about the legendary Norrmalmstorg robbery in 1973, a dramatic event that produced the famous expression ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. Kicking back with a thriller is also known as ‘mysrys’.

Sorry, no cash

In a couple of years when the hipster scene in Stockholm has evolved even further, cash will probably be cool again. The beard-cladded men that today can be seen brewing IPAs will probably start forging their very own silver coins by then. But until then, your credit card is still king. The easiest method of payment is called Swish, a Swedish payment app. However, you’re gonna need a bank account in Sweden to use it.

Go for a swim - all year round

No we’re not kidding, apparently the Swedes have rediscovered water. In the dark, boring months during the pandemic, someone thought it would be a great idea to start a new mega trend: Let’s go ice swimming they said. It’ll be fun they said. Oh well, maybe not for everyone but if you’re feeling gutsy, by all means, go for it. Rumour has it that swimming in cold waters can improve your health and extend your life. Not bad, huh.

A Place Called The Nest

The Nest is no ordinary retreat. It has been designed to boost you with a very modern approach to wellbeing - no hushing, no pointing fingers, no fuss. This is a place where you can be yourself and kick back on your own terms while admiring the city from above.

Aching limbs after a day of exploring the city? Take the lift to the top and discover The Nest: An urban retreat and a must-see for all guests.

Leave behind the distractions of digital screens and busy traffic, embrace the vibe and discover a whole new take on wellness. Step into the sauna, shaped like a bird’s nest. Lather up in the experience showers, then head outside to the pool for a cold drink and some serious chill. Soon you will be ready for another day.

Back to basics

The ”spa world” can feel a bit intimidating to many of us: “Do this, do that, and keep your voice down”. Basically, very far from how most of us want to retreat, right? The Nest offers a fresh approach to wellness. The guiding thought behind the concept is to encourage a sustainable lifestyle - one that you can keep up with.

Today, we live in a digital world where we deal with loads of unnatural stress factors that affect our health and the way we socialise with others. People start to become aware of the importance of taking better care of themselves; to minimise screen time and focus on the meaningful relationships in life. The Nest offers an including, laid-back and utterly stand-alone experience - a new generation of wellness.

Do it yourself

There are no traditional spa treatments in The Nest. Instead, the offering has been shaped to encompass sustainability, education and long-term wellbeing. Hence, the focus on DIY treatments, where the idea is to equip you

with the know-how to best take care of yourself and your skin - a knowledge that can be applied and used long after you leave the hotel.

It only gets better with time Another important thing to remember is that the tempo in The Nest will increase throughout the day. Visit early if you are looking for some peace and quiet. The music plays softer, and there are fewer people in the retreat. As the evening approaches, the music shifts to an ambient pool club vibe as the adjacent cocktail lounge opens. It’s the perfect time and place for an aperitif in the company of good friends.

House Rules

Welcome to The Nest - a place for new experiences and inspiration. Togetherness, wellbeing and fun is our focus here and hence, we encourage a mobile-free environment. You are not allowed to talk on your phone, but if you want to take a picture as a memory to keep from your visit, you are more than welcome. Discover flavours from around the world on our drinks menu, meet new and old friends, and enjoy great music to magical views from the top of Downtown Camper. Children are amazing, but up here, they are not our primary focus - we have other spaces in the hotel where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to socialise and regain energy.

How to book

As a hotel guest, you always have priority in The Nest. Don’t forget to pre-book your visit by contacting the front desk or booking online at boka.se/thenestwellness. Towels, bathrobes and slippers are provided.

Young adults from 16 and up are welcome to visit The Nest.

Welcome to the Great Indoors

Downtown Camper is the ultimate basecamp to absorb Stockholm. A hotel for locals, travellers, and urban explorers. Experience Stockholm like never before – we will connect you with our community of local friends and partners. This is where the adventure begins.

Campfire Grill & Bar

In Campfire, we gather around the fire to share experiences, stories and enjoy good food while meeting new and old friends. We create exciting dishes close to our hearts, and call our cuisine “comfort food from every corner of the world”. Here, we use the elemental force of fire and extract the flavours of the flames, and the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversation, laughter, and music.

The Nest

On the rooftop of Downtown Camper, far above the vibrant pulse of the city and with an astonishing view over Stockholm, is The Nest. Enjoy the peace in the sauna and the refreshing water in the rooftop pool in the wellness area. All guests aged 16 and older are welcome to visit. Discover

the cocktail lounge; kick back in an armchair in the company of friends, and sip away on a signature cocktail to the beat of the music.

Downtown Camper Café

Behind the hotel, in one of Stockholm’s most happening walking streets, Drottninggatan, you will find our café. As usual at Downtown Camper, we are all about sustainability, wellbeing, and togetherness, and the offering has been carefully selected accordingly. Discover an array of gorgeous food on the menu. Pop by for some people watching over a rich cup of coffee, a freshlysqueezed juice, or something more filling.

Camper Co-Living

We travel in new constellations; with extended family, friends and colleagues. We like our privacy but love shared areas where we can socialise, work and eat together. With Camper Co-Living, we have adapted our rooms to fit the way you travel: We connect bedrooms to each side of the social areas in the main suite so that 6 - 12 people can live together the way they prefer. Excellent service, magnificent views and a friendly atmosphere are of

course always included in the deal.

Creative Spaces

New spaces feed new ideas. That was the guiding thought when we developed our Creative Spaces where you can meet, brainstorm, team build, and workshop in environments that make it easier for the mind to think freely and creatively. Perhaps through a film screening in the movie theatre, Nightwood, or a get-together in Cocoon, a cosy space perfect for the small meeting or a private dinner. The playful Game Room will help you find new solutions to old challenges. For the larger group, Roots offers 1300 sqm of multi-flexible events space for all kinds of fun.

DC Podcast Studio

This is where we share ideas, thoughts, opinions, and experiences, with each other and the world. Equipped with the latest recording gear, it’s 100% easy-to-use and hassle-free. The studio itself is sound-proofed but located in the vibrant environment by Campfire’s bar - which makes it perfect for recordings in front of a live audience.
