DC Paper - Autumn 2023

Page 1

AUTUMN 2023

Think about how much we have, yet we long for something different. We love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our living standards, still we long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but every now and then, nature calls us back. We want to be spontaneous; to be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpacks - and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather, discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private - we are both, all of the time. We are the generation of diverse, curious, and exploring ’bon vivants’.

To us, luxury is never about the surface. It’s about encounters, contrasts, experiences, and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV, to hear new stories, get new impressions, or for just one moment find ourselves out of reach, offline, offgrid. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that works for both an expedition into the unknown and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

A swirling abundance of Flavours

Discover comfort food from all over the world in Campfire. Snack-friendly goodies and awesome cocktails in The Nest. The green and tasty from Downtown Camper Café. From dawn to dusk, there’s always a new taste to explore at Downtown Camper.

Campfire - a buzzing living room for locals and travellers Downtown Camper’s main restaurant, Campfire, is where we gather around the open fire to share experiences, stories, and to enjoy good food with new and old friends. It’s the hotel’s heart and social hub, serving up an eclectic abundance of comfort food from all corners of the world.

The meal as a social ritual is top of mind here, and in the kitchen we create exciting dishes that are close to our hearts. Inspired by childhood memories, places we’ve been, and the shifting seasons, we call our food concept ”comfort food” - the kind of food that puts a smile on your face and spreads joy, love, and comfort. Here, the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversations, laughter, and music.

Campfire is an open, cosy, and warm meeting place for both Stockholmers and hotel guests, with an aim to bring back an including and spontaneous social code. Here, we use the elemental force of fire and extract the smoky flavours from the charcoal. Our grilled concept is a big flirt with the food truck culture, a conviction that good food is all about enhancing simple and natural flavours: Meals you can share with your friends and family, talk about, taste from each other’s plates, and simply enjoy together.

The Nest - the rooftop place to be

The cocktail lounge that sits on top of the building offers astonishing views of the city and tasty drinks created with much care and attention to detail. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, the creative bar team uses seasonal ingredients in their own homemade syrups and infusions to differentiate the taste experience and offer guests something truly unique. As pioneers of the low-ABV trend in mixology, The Nest has an impressing list of low- to non-alcoholic drinks and mocktails for the guest who wishes to go easy on the liquor. Whether you’re an Old Fashioned, a Shirley Temple, or something less decided, there’s something here to tease your taste buds.

The food concept is still very “Downtown Camper”, although it takes a slightly different turn. Here, we have composed a modern and recognisable menu consisting of fresh food and savoury snacks that are easy to enjoy in the comfy armchairs of the cocktail lounge. The food is high in quality, flavours, and textures, and the menu offers something for everyone.

With its personal style, earthy tones, and mile-wide views, The Nest is a hideaway in the heart of the never-sleeping city. To visit The Nest, hop in the lift and press ”9”. It will take you straight up to cocktail heaven.

Downtown Camper Café - a perfect pitstop on your city expedition

Food, friends, and gorgeous coffee. Here’s a social hotspot to add to your list: Downtown Camper Café is located by the hotel’s meeting and events area, Roots, on the backside of the hotel and facing the popular shopping street Drottninggatan. As usual at Downtown Camper, sustainability, wellbeing, and togetherness are important focal points, and the offering has been carefully selected accordingly.

Filled to the brim with tasty treats, the menu is largely plant-based and vegetarian, with nutritious, healthy, and beautiful food that encourages an alltogether sustainable lifestyle. The furniture and utensils have been hand picked and are made of recycled or rescued materials.

Located on one of Stockholm’s most happening walking streets, the café is a perfect pitstop close to all the things you want to explore, with everything from all-day breakfast and tasty lunch food to coffee, locally produced beer, biodynamic wines, and organic soft drinks.

Downtown Camper Café is a given hangout for the local community and travellers that come from near and far. You can get here by taking the lift to floor -2 or, why not, do the walk around the corner outside.

Downtown Camper x ZeroMission

We decided to partner up with ZeroMission and ArBolivia to offset the emissions from all the meat we buy at the hotel.

The compensation is executed through tree planting within a community of small-scale farmers in Cochabamba, Bolivia. This extraordinary project is designed not only to capture carbon dioxid from the atmosphere by planting new trees – something that also improves the biodiversity in the important Amazon region - but also, to make the local farmers an active part in shaping their own community and future.

It’s an amazing project that we hope will inspire more people to take action against climate change.

OUR TOP PICKS

Every day there’s something new to explore here at Downtown Camper - check out all activities on the opposite page. Here are two of our personal favourites.

Forest Bathing

Sundays 09.00-12.45

Marshmallow Moment

Wednesdays & Fridays 18.00-19.00

We’re going deep into the Swedish forest. On a search for eternal life... Oh well, maybe not. But we’re hoping to benefit from its healing properties. And we promise you’ll appreciate the colourful season in all its glory.

Our expedition takes a turn down south, into an awesome nature reserve called Nackareservatet. Rich and diverse nature and buzzing wildlife await us here, as we hike down to the freshwater spring. A quick stop before pushing on to our final destination, the lake.

Here we’ll do a short mindfulness session to clear our minds, and there’s also time for a quick swim in the lake (if you dare).

For all levels. Kids welcome in parent’s company. This activity takes about 3.5 hours (public transport round trip incl.) Dress accordingly and bring an extra jumper / sweater. We meet up by the lifestyle desk in the lobby.

The best things in life are free, but please register in advance so we know you’re coming. Sign up at the reception desk, or email: lifestyleconcierge@scandichotels.com

Do handmade cocktails, fluffy treats, and the crackling of an open fire tickle your fancy?

You’re not alone, it’s one of our favourite things too. Join us as we gather around the campfire for an hour of marshmallow roasting. Who knows, maybe you’ll turn some strangers into friends.

Sometimes (or, okay, very often) we just can’t resist the cravings for hot, roasted marshmallows bursting with sugary sweetness. When these cravings set in, it’s very convenient to have an open fire at the heart of our restau-

OR, JUST GO PLOGGING

rant. You can now join us every Wednesday and Friday as we come together to worship this massively underrated treat.

Everyone is welcome (kids in parent’s company). From 18.00, you can collect your own marshmallow kit at the bar. This is also where you’ll find cocktails, drinks, or any other beverage of your liking. The marshmallows are free, but you pay for the drinks you order.

Let the fun begin. Sign up at the reception desk, or email: lifestyleconcierge@scandichotels.com

Start your day like a hero - this is a proper boost of confidence. Grab a Plogga bag from the lifestyle desk in the lobby, and go for a treasure hunt. Try to pick as much rubbish from the streets as you can fit into your bag. When your bag is full, bring it back to the hotel and hand it in: You can now claim an awesome reward: A DC tote bag filled with beautiful body care products from our own line Downtown Mist. Happy hunting, and nature says thanks. This is a collaboration with @Plogga.

It can be tricky to navigate the “new” reality knowing that we have to change our ways to keep global warming down to a minimum. But be lost no more! We spoke to Naturskyddsföreningen who are experts at this stuff, and turns out, there are several easy ways to adopt a sustainable lifestyle with quite a small effort. So here you go; a shortlist of the very best things you can do on an individual level to minimise your environmental footprint and become a proper modern person, fit for the 2020s. Let’s go!

Be nosy

As a consumer, you have the ultimate power to impact brands and retailers. Be curious and well-informed; ask questions to show that you care about their ethical and environmental policies. Also ask if there are available spare parts for the product you consider purchasing - if the retailer offers spare parts, they probably have a more circular and sustainable attitude. And if your newly-purchased item breaks, send it back immediately and have the vendor repair it for you. Simply put, shop with care for people and planet.

More bang for the buck

Buy stuff with a good second-hand value. The biggest environmental impact is at production level, so put your things to good use and make sure they get a long life. Think circular: A basic principle is to make sure the stuff you buy can be sold again once you get tired of them, and shop second hand if you can. Support your local community, make your favourites last longer, and use the services of skillful shoemakers and tailors.

Streamline your closet

Would you pay 500 sek for a sweater you will wear only once? You probably have stuff in your closet that you never really use, and you’re not alone. Reclaim control of your wardrobe – tag your clothes and make a note every time you use it. Could it be that it’s a better idea to buy something a bit more expensive / high quality that you will use often, instead of fast fashion that you will only use once or twice?

Less energy, more

fun

The rising energy prices made many of us consider our use of electricity. Thankfully, there are many ways to cut costs and this is an area where you can make a huge difference whilst saving loads of money! Energy production stands for almost a third of global emissions, so if you choose energy from

The Sustainability Guide

renewable sources you’re half way there. Did you know that the electricity price goes up and down depending on the time of the day? Take control, make it a sport to use as little as you can, and just imagine all the fun you will have for the money you save. You can follow your efforts and progress on the bills, or why not invest in a monitor to follow your energy use in real time?

Let’s calculate!

Some numbers for you: The consumer-based emissions are on average nine tons Co2 / person and year. Five of which are from consumption. If we are to stop at 1,5 degrees global warming (the target set in the Paris agreement), we have to arrive at one ton / person and year. You get our point, something has to be done, so why wait? Calculate your emissions in a climate calculator, and see where you as a person / household can make the biggest change. Is the secret to your sustainable lifestyle to take the train instead of the plane, eat more plant-based, or shop second hand?

Talk about it

Become a role model. Create a new environmental habit and see how you can change attitudes in your inner circle of people. Remember, word of mouth is the most effective and credible promotion. If you want to do more, talk to your local community and be a force to be reckoned with. Is your building renewing their electricity supply contract? Push for a green option!

Sharing is caring

Do as you do when you stay in a hotel, and share things with other people. Try one of the many peer-to-peer services available today. Pinning up some new shelves on the wall? Rent a screwdriver. Invited to a wedding, nothing to wear? Rent a designer dress. And honestly, why buy an expensive car if you can rent one across the street when you need it?

Every bite matters

If you can’t skip the beef altogether – choose a local, free-range or eco-labelled meat from animals that graze out in the open. Free-range cattle actually contribute to an open cultural landscape, by maintaining important biotopes for other species, and this has a positive impact on the biodiversity. If you can skip the meat, why not have a fresh veggie barbeque? There are thousands of yummy recipes and tips out there, and with a tasty BBQ sauce it’s every bit as delicious as steak - and so much more nutritious.

No ticket to ride

You don’t need a ticket to have an adventure. There are over 5000 natural reserves in Sweden, all of which are contributing to the protection of wildlife and nature. If you want to experience Sweden’s most precious natural environments, steer your steps in the direction of a National Park; we’ve got no less than 30 of them in this country! Why not start with Tyresta, just south of Stockholm? It’s the largest old-growth forest this side of Dalälven.

Not enough options? Do it yourself!

Sometimes what’s on offer in the stores is simply not good enough. Time to take matter into your own hands and - while you’re at it - learn something new. Like baking your favourite bread for example. In Sweden, there are loads of good, organic, and locally produced flour on the market, and baking is extremely hip at the moment: During the pandemic, there was a huge surge in people who started baking and selling online. And to be honest; what tops warm, freshly baked bread?

Check your investments

Do you know who is using your money? The financial industry makes it possible to directly or indirectly support industries that are far from sustainable. You could, through your savings, be supporting a huge environmental culprit without knowing about it. Demand transparency from your banker and make sure you invest in sustainable and ethical industries and companies. It’s as simple as this; if no one invests in the baddies, they will eventually cease to exist.

Dive into a new world

Get to know the world around you - read a book about bugs! There are loads of awesome options and here’s a shortlist for you: “Notes From A Summer Cottage” by Nina Burton, “Extraordinary Insects” by Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson, “The History Of Bees” by Maja Lunde, and “The Garden Jungle” by Dave Goulson. By learning more about all the little critters that share our planet, you will widen your own horizon and have a new perspective on just how much we depend on them for our own survival. These books offer moments of recognition, awe, and not to mention - fits of giggles!

Reaching New Heights

Full throttle with a contagious smile and a disarming personality. That’s how we’d like to describe our new Wellness Manager, Simone. At the modest age of 15, she signed her first job as a waiter in a local restaurant in her hometown, Eskilstuna. That experience fuelled a great dedication for guest service and hospitality. Skip 18 years forward and she finds herself on the top (quite literally) at Downtown Camper’s urban retreat. A resourceful, full-tilt visionary with a passion for people, she’s here to take The Nest to new heights.

Hi Simone! Tell us about your new role in The Nest, what’s your driving force?

In one way, I walked into this role as a clean slate, with no previous experience of working within health and wellness. As it turns out, that has been an advantage here. The Nest was never meant to be a spa in that sense, so not having preconceived notions about what wellness is has been positive - it allows me to do things differently and to step away from the norm. Here, we work differently with a more openminded view on wellbeing - it’s supposed to be a laid-back, fun, and including place. My strength lies is my operational experience, in building teams and developing new ways of working with guest service. I’ve tried to maintain a sort of helicopter perspective, to find new, bold ways of making the experience better for the guest. I want to be a part of shaping a unique experience, and that’s what drives me in the end.

What attracted you to The Nest?

It’s a feelgood environment, not only for the guests but also for the people who work here.

The Nest is a warm and casual hangout with its own unique take on health, wellness, and wellbeing. This is not the kind of place that forces things on you; no one hushes or rushes you, tells you what to do, or how to be. Here, we want to encourage a truly sustainable lifestyle - one that you can actually keep up with. I really love this way of approaching the concept of wellbeing, not locking it in, but rather exploring what makes a person feel better from the inside and out.

Other than you, who works here? Tell us about your colleagues.

We’re an eclectic team in a positive way. Very different from each other, we all have our quirks and passions. Sarah is the free-spirited artist. Alexandra is the adventurer. Ali is a service star and a filmmaker tobe. Selim, who’s worked here for the longest, is the calm mediator and the glue that holds us all together. Everyone contributes in their own way and let’s just say – there’s never a boring day at work.

What can you do up here, as a guest?

We have shaped our offer around three pillars - sustainability, education, and longterm wellbeing. There are no traditional spa treatments here, instead we offer DIY treatments; a casual and fun way to learn how to take care of yourself and your skin. Going into the new season, there are a few new ones you should try: a new grooming ritual, sheet masks for your face, and a deep exfoliating treatment for hands and feet. If you need a helping hand, there’s always the guided rituals where you’ll learn more about the products and how to use them.

What products do you use in The Nest?

We use body care from the local brand Moonsun Organics. Award-winning holistic and sustainable skin care, the series consist of only 10 products. All products are adaptogenic, which means that they adapt to all skin types and can be used by all members of the family, with less packaging, lower Co2 emissions, and a minimal impact on the climate, as a result.

Thanks for the chat, Simone. Before we go, describe the feeling in The Nest. Why is it worth a visit?

This is a place where you can be yourself and relax on your own terms. Come early if you are looking for some peace and quiet. The music plays softer, and there are fewer people in the retreat. As the evening approaches, the music shifts to an ambient pool club vibe as the adjacent cocktail lounge opens. It’s the perfect place to enjoy cocktails in the company of good friends.

House Rules

Welcome to The Nest - a place for new experiences and inspiration. Togetherness, wellbeing, and fun is our focus here and hence, we encourage a mobile-free environment. You are not allowed to talk on your phone, but if you want to take a picture as a memory to keep from your visit, you are more than welcome. Discover flavours from around the world on our drinks menu, meet new and old friends, and enjoy great music to magical views from the top of Downtown Camper. Children are amazing, but up here, they are not our primary focus - we have other spaces in the hotel where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to socialise and regain energy. Young adults from 16 and up are welcome to visit The Nest.

How to book

As a hotel guest, you always have priority in The Nest. You also have a discount on the admission fee, but don’t forget to pre-book your visit. Towels, bathrobes, and slippers for a loan - just bring your swimsuit.

Welcome to the Great Indoors

Downtown Camper is the ultimate basecamp to absorb Stockholm. A hotel for locals, travellers, and urban explorers. Experience Stockholm like never before – we will connect you with our community of local friends and partners. This is where the adventure begins.

Campfire Grill & Bar

In Campfire, we gather around the fire to share experiences, stories and enjoy good food while meeting new and old friends. We create exciting dishes close to our hearts, and call our cuisine “comfort food from every corner of the world”. Here, we use the elemental force of fire and extract the flavours of the flames, and the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversation, laughter, and music.

The Nest

On the rooftop of Downtown Camper, far above the vibrant pulse of the city and with an astonishing view over Stockholm, is The Nest. Enjoy the peace in the sauna and the refreshing water in the rooftop pool in the wellness area. All guests aged 16 and older are welcome to visit. Discover

the cocktail lounge; kick back in an armchair in the company of friends, and sip away on a signature cocktail to the beat of the music.

Downtown Camper Café

Behind the hotel, in one of Stockholm’s most happening walking streets, Drottninggatan, you will find our café. As usual at Downtown Camper, we are all about sustainability, wellbeing, and togetherness, and the offering has been carefully selected accordingly. Discover an array of gorgeous food on the vegetarian menu. Pop by for some people watching over a rich cup of coffee, a freshly-squeezed smoothie, or something more filling.

Camper Co-Living

We travel in new constellations; with extended family, friends and colleagues. We like our privacy but love shared areas where we can socialise, work and eat together. With Camper Co-Living, we have adapted our rooms to fit the way you travel: We connect bedrooms to each side of the social areas in the main suite so that 6 - 12 people can live together the way they prefer. Excellent service,

Creative Spaces

New spaces feed new ideas. That was the guiding thought when we developed our Creative Spaces where you can meet, brainstorm, team build, and workshop in environments that make it easier for the mind to think freely and creatively. Perhaps through a film screening in the movie theatre, Nightwood, or a get-together in Cocoon, a cosy space perfect for the small meeting or a private dinner. The playful Game Room will help you find new solutions to old challenges. For the larger group, Roots offers 1300 sqm of multi-flexible events space for all kinds of fun.

DC Podcast Studio

This is where we share ideas, thoughts, opinions, and experiences, with each other and the world. Equipped with the latest recording gear, it’s 100% easy-to-use and hassle-free. The studio itself is sound-proofed but located in the vibrant environment by Campfire’s bar - which makes it perfect for recordings in front of a live audience.
