Izabelle Through The Grapevine The goddess of cocktails.

The Talk of Life Discover the Downtown TALKS.

Take the Lift up to Heaven The Nest. So much more than wellness.

Think about how much we have and yet how often we long for something different. Consider how much we love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our standard but long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but be able to enjoy nature. To be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpack and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather and discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are neither professional nor private but everything at the same time, all the time. We are flexible and diverse, exploring ’bon vivants’. To us luxury is never about the surface. To us it’s about connections and encounters, contrasts and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV to hear new stories, get new impressions – or suddenly find ourselves out of reach, not being online all the time. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. We are curious and hungry but are expected to be creative in standardised, air-conditioned, rooms while we long for encounters and conversations during a hike that might lead us to a completely different place than we expected. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that will work for both an expedition into the unknown part of the big city and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

Drink responsively

Izabelle Through the Grapevine Photographer: Izabella Englund

Keeping up with Izabelle is not easy. Although she gives you a calm impression, her story suggests that her life has been anything but that. At a young age, Izabelle threw herself into the world, travelling from corner to corner, feeding her curiosity and exploring what she couldn’t find in her city of residence, Stockholm. Her goal is to visit all the countries in the world, “except perhaps North Korea” she smilingly interposes while pouring me a glass of wine (but something tells me she wouldn’t say no to that experience either, if given the opportunity). As a veterinary student in her early days, she found little time to spend with friends, so her solution was to mix cocktails and business and pleasure to get away from the books once in a while. It was a good way to earn extra money while having fun and meeting new people, she says. Izabelle liked it so much that she decided to stick with it, and the rest is history. Now she’s standing behind Campfire’s bar, where she works tirelessly experimenting, creating and mixing magic brews as keen as a scientist on a mission. Izabelle, hi! Tell us, what’s the attraction of working in a bar? Well, while most of the time it’s hard work and long days, it’s still all worth it because we have such a good time. You get to know so many different personalities, every day in fact, and that’s the secret answer to the mysterious appeal of this job. What’s it like working at Campfire? It feels like having guests in your own living room. You’ve got all the elements: the open fire, the friendly camping spirit together with the relaxed and ‘homey’ ambiance. And my colleagues are absolute diamonds. Tell us more about Campfire? Our mission is to make sure the cocktails surprise and refresh you in one way or another. We have a very varied drinks list to satisfy the palate of our many guests, e.g. organic, natural wine, vegan beer and gluten-free alternatives. We update the drinks list with fun and surprising cocktails four times a year to keep it interesting for the guest, and also according to the season with pine fresh ingredients. We combine simple flavours and make our own homemade syrups and infusions. The marshmallow is a signature ingredient in both the restaurant and in the bar. My favourite is a homemade syrup of marshmallows and banana, which is absolutely delicious. I can really recommend ordering up some marshmallows to grill over the open fire, to go with your cocktail. What do the cool kids order these days? Old Fashioned is still the most common drink to order. More and more guests also ask for the bartender’s choice. I think it’s because guests are getting more interested in the world of mixology making them more curious to try new stuff. It’s also the perfect request from a bartender’s perspective as it gives us a chance to shine and be creative. Speaking for myself, I often order the Negroni, it’s a classic, safe card. Why is Campfire’s bar worth a visit? The quality of the cocktails and the masterminds behind them. Whether you are interested in a classic or a complicated cocktail, or simply want to enjoy a hot chocolate by the fire, we have our minds set on you leaving Campfire feeling better than you did walking in. Meet Izabelle and the rest of the bar team at Campfire’s bar. And for an extra dimension of fun, don’t miss Downtown DJ every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

The Talk of Life Photographer: Izabella Englund

Niklas Delmar is present. When you pass him in the corridors, he smiles and in the most sincere way, he asks you how you are doing, leaving you with a feeling that he really ‘sees you’. He seems the embodiment of balance and compassion. Niklas was recently appointed curator and moderator of Downtown Camper’s new initiative Downtown TALKS, the speaker scene that sheds light on inspiring topics related to what it means to be a human in our time. Promoting a mindful, simple and curious approach to life. But the road to illumination is (from what we’ve heard), long and lined with challenges, and Niklas is no exception. Many years ago, he was pushing his limits as a hard-working, multi-tasking careerist. He was as many of us, burning his candle at both ends. When he lost a close family member prematurely, he experienced what he describes as ‘a wake-up call’ and subsequently, he decided to make some changes to his lifestyle. Driven by the belief that every human being has their own super power, Niklas has devoted his time to questions surrounding leadership, sustainability, and organisational development. As one of the leading figures behind ABLE Lounge, a community focusing on holistic wellbeing, and as an active member of several organisations, his objective is now to help people reach their full potential. He brings with him his inexhaustible curiosity for life and passion for people in his new role with Downtown TALKS. Hey there Niklas. What keeps you going? I have a natural curiosity for continuous personal development. I’m inspired by the unknown, I live without principles, and make sure that I´m constantly challenged regarding my beliefs. The inspiration as such comes from interacting with people and being challenged by my kids, my wife, and friends on a daily basis. What do people struggle with today, in your experience? The people I meet struggle with different levels of anxiety, insecurity and to some degree, we are all just trying to fit in. Many of my clients find it challenging to find a sustainable balance between their professional and domestic lives, their relationships with others, whilst trying to stay healthy at the same time.

So, what is sustainability to you? That’s a challenging question. For me, it starts from within. My objective is to be sustainable in all dimensions: body, mind, and soul. Once I have achieved that, I can focus on the rest – to create a sustainable society and planet. My trick to change is taking it bit by bit, creating lasting habits that you can learn to live with. And once you find balance, motivation will follow. Tell us about Downtown TALKS. At the speaker scene Downtown TALKS, we invite experts from different fields of study and backgrounds, for a 20-minute talk followed by a 20-minute discussion. The talks are live streamed and then uploaded to Downtown Camper’s Facebook page. The idea is to create a platform for sharing knowledge, challenging preconceptions and maintaining a dialogue on sustainability, life, and motivation. We believe in sharing new research, new thoughts, and new ideas so we all can benefit, get stronger in our ability to co-create and increase the level of understanding for ideas we normally aren’t introduced to. I believe anyone can benefit from taking part in Downtown TALKS, in both a private and professional capacity. Who can attend Downtown TALKS? Anyone who is looking for inspiration and motivation on the topic of life. The event will be public and open for registration on Downtown Camper’s Facebook page, but our capacity is limited so don’t wait too long to register. Can you share your best life advice with us? I have to steal Steve Jobs’ quote from his Stanford graduation speech: “stay hungry and stay foolish”. Taking control of your life will definitely help you to avoid falling into the trap of living someone else’s life. Thank you, we’ll take that to heart. What is your super power, by the way? I work continuously to spread and share the joy of living. Read more about Downtown TALKS on Downtown Camper’s Facebook page. If you want to see more of Niklas, visit his workshop Leadership & Engagement, held every Wednesday at Downtown Camper.

Below five selected hotspots as marked on the map. You can find all the Downtown Hotspots on our website, on your in-room entertainment system, on Google Maps and the guides are also available as podcasts on iTunes.

1. Roy and Son Hornsbruksgatan 24, Södermalm “The crew at Roy and Son by Hornstull breathes quality. They’re vitality and flexibility – old vs. new, they know it all. The guys are quite busy so make your appointment in advance. What is extra special and nice with this barbershop is that it’s a part of Tjoget which is a well-known wine and cocktail bar. This means that you will get a drink in your hand whilst getting your hair done, which is very ‘un-Swedish’ and quite awesome!” – Tobias ‘Big T’ Olsen, Stockholm-based barber

2. Rålis Skatepark Rålambshovsparken, Kungsholmen “This one is located under a bridge so you can skate here even when it rains. This skatepark is what got me back to skateboarding. I walked past and people were skateboarding or playing cricket – there is so much energy and so many different sports.” – Jörgen Brennicke, photographer and skater

2 3. Second Sunrise Katarina Bangata 69, Södermalm “This is one of my personal favourite denim stores. They have a great selection of jeans from Japan and USA, all raw denim. Some days they also have indigo dying courses you can attend. In the back of the store, they have old sewing machines where they tailor make jeans using old fabrics. One section in the store is dedicated to vintage denim. They always have 60´s and older stuff up for sale. I started to collect vintage denim together with Douglas, who is one of the owners of Second Sunrise. Don’t miss this store!”

4. Sophies Canelé Sankt Eriksgatan 81, Vasastan

Photographer: Pierre Mangez

“Seven years ago, Sophie Maillard quit her profession as a soldier in the French navy and moved to Sweden. Her friends thought she should start a café with canelé as a specialty. In the beginning, the café was located in a suburb outside of Stockholm and delivered these small pastries from Bordeaux with a caramelised, crispy surface and sticky inside. Baked in small copper forms at a very high temperature. Since 2015 she has run a popular café in Vasastan with a French / Swedish love for baking. Every Thursday between 10 am and 1 pm they host a ‘language café’ where everyone is welcome to speak French - regardless of their language level.”

– Robert Kwok, award-winning fika and food blogger

5. Hotel Scandic Malmen Götgatan 49-51, Södermalm “We cannot ignore the fact that Scandic Malmen is a great place to see artists and musicians with high credibility. The big lobby bar attracts hipsters like Robyn, Andreas Kleerup and actor Stellan Skarsgård who live nearby.” – Hans Shimoda, celebrity journalist

How to Survive the Winter in Stockholm Text: Pontus Holmgren

The cold season in Stockholm can be magical, with crisp air and majestic buildings that stretch towards the clear blue sky. But our cold and dark winter also has its challenges. Here are seven tips for a better winter experience in Stockholm. See you in the snow. 1. Dress warm, from top to toe Occasionally the Stockholm winter can be mild, but eventually, the capital will be struck by that inevitable freeze with snow, icy winds and slippery streets. What to do? Dress for the occasion! Do as the Stockholmers do, tuck yourself into a big, fluffy jacket. Think layers on layers. Put on some long johns, in Sweden known as ‘långkalsonger’. Undergarments made of wool is another must. We apparently leak a lot of body heat from our heads so the beanie is important. Many Stockholmers are spotted wearing knitted beanies. Some girls prefer the kind that points straight up. The cool guys choose the ‘sotarmössa,’ a kind of minimal beanie that the city’s hipsters have taken to heart. Warm shoes are perhaps the most essential, preferable boots with a thick rubber sole. In a pair of these, you can battle both snow and ‘slask’ (that is to say the half-melted slush that you’re left with when the snow starts to melt away). 2. Winter wonder walks and ice skating romance There are days when Stockholm shows its most enchanting self. When the ice lies thick on Riddarfjärden, the house roofs are all covered in snow and the ice crystals glisten in the treetops. This is the time to head outside. But make sure you plan in some pit stops on your walk. A café, a restaurant and perhaps some museums: cosy spots with good food, warm beverages, and inspiring culture. Take Strandvägen from Nybroplan towards Djurgårdsbron. Crossing the bridge, on your right-hand side, you’ll find the Nordic Museum. This castle-like building was built between 1889 and 1907 and looks like something out of a fairy tale. The architect was Artur Hazelius (1833–1901), also the man behind Skansen. Are you a hopeless romantic? Then visit the ice skating rink in Kungsträdgården, only a couple of blocks away from Downtown Camper. The city’s best ‘winter-in-Central-Park-experience’. The rink is open every day and ice skates can be rented at a small cost.

3. Experience winter Stockholm from the bike You do know that you can lend bikes from the lobby, right? Don’t let the winter stop you. Stockholm has no less than 2110 km of walkways and bike lanes and the city works hard to keep them clean and secure all year around. They have to. More and more Stockholmers use their bike to go to work, winter or no winter. And when you head out, avoid dressing too warm on your upper body. You’ll find you heat up quite quickly cycling up and down hilly Stockholm. And make sure you’re visible in the dark. Turn on your head and tail lights as soon as the sun starts to set. Don’t forget the reflectors! In Stockholm, the reflector is currently experiencing an upswing as a fashion accessory. A Swedish insurance company recently let some Swedish fashion designers, e.g. the ‘infant terrible’ Ann-Sofie Back and the denim guru Örjan Andersson design cool reflecting creations. When you get off your bike, keep the reflectors on. 4. The magic of hot chocolate Being outside in the cold takes energy. If you drink something warm, you’ll regain your strength. And your body temperature. And let’s be honest, what’s better than hot chocolate? This is a beverage with which most Swedes have a special relationship. We associate it with childhood adventures. Those cherished moments when thermoses magically appeared out of your parents’ backpack with this steaming hot beverage. Studies also show that hot chocolate is good for you. It’s said to increase the microcirculation in the skin, which helps us keep warm. The chocolate itself triggers the brain to release endorphins which calm us. So when you get back to the hotel from your next excursion in winter Stockholm, stay calm and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate by the fire. 5. Find the best (and heated) shortcuts Experienced Stockholmers go from A to B without freezing more than necessary. A knowledge that you, for survival purposes, have to acquire after having spent a few freezing winters in the city. You’ll soon learn the shortcuts that minimise time spent outside in the cold, and downtown it’s quite easy to navigate through malls and department stores. Are you going from the central station to Stureplan on a cold day? Hurry over Sergels Torg into the built-in

shopping centre underneath Hamngatan. Then enter the Nordiska Kompaniet department store and make your way to street level. Continue through the PK Huset mall until you reach Norrlandsgatan. Then you’re on your own, you’ll have to walk the last three, four blocks to Stureplan outside. The subway stations also offer heated shortcuts. Find your way crossing the platforms of the underworld, while getting some culture too: the artwork-adorned walls in the subway are well worth a visit on their own. But if you’ve read tip no 1, you can skip straight to no 6. 6. Take good care of your skin and lips The winter in Stockholm offers no mercy to skin and lips. The contrast between the rough outside cold and the heated indoors will have an effect on your skin. In other words, make sure to rehydrate. Fatty creams prevent dehydration and keep your skin in check. The lips are extra sensitive. They don’t contain as many layers of skin cells as the regular skin and lose moisture up to three times quicker. Hence, the lips need some extra loving care. There are conflicting opinions as to what product to use, but make sure it contains a moisturiser and is based on natural oils and waxes. Soft lips make it easier to talk, make funny faces and last but not least, to kiss. 7. Learn the importance of ‘mys’ The Danes have their ‘hygge’ and us Swedes we have our ‘mys’. The word roughly translates to the English ‘cosiness’ or ‘snuggle’. The winter is the time of year when Stockholmers appreciate mys the most, especially the weeks leading up to Christmas. Here are some great mys tips: light some candles and put on a pot of coffee or hot chocolate. Or even better: glögg. This warm drink goes best with some saffron buns and gingerbread on the side, which together is the very essence of ‘julmys’. Why not cosy up on the sofa and let yourself be swept away by some Stockholm fiction classics: Jens Lapidus’ hardcore Stockholm Noir trilogy, Bo Widerberg’s film ‘Mannen på Taket’ or the new release ‘Stockholm’, starring Ethan Hawke and Noomi Rapace. The film is about the legendary Norrmalmstorg robbery in 1973, a dramatic event that produced the famous expression ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. Kicking back with a thriller is also known as ‘mysrys’.

Normally operating from their Åsögatan location in Södermalm, they have now temporarily moved in at Downtown Camper, to assemble our rental bikes on site in the hotel lobby. The range of bikes that is on offer in the hotel is typical for what a Stockholmer would choose: built on lightweight aluminum frames, some with gears and some without, but always with a clean and uncompromised look and feel.
