The Nest 2.0
More than just wellness.
Think about how much we have and yet how often we long for something different. Consider how much we love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our standard but long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but be able to enjoy nature. To be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpack and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather and discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private but everything at the same time, all the time. We are flexible and diverse, exploring ’bon vivants’. To us luxury is never about the surface. To us it’s about connections and encounters, contrasts and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV to hear new stories, get new impressions – or suddenly find ourselves out of reach, not being online all the time. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. We are curious and hungry but are expected to be creative in standardised, air-conditioned, rooms while we long for encounters and conversations during a hike that might lead us to a completely different place than we expected. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that will work for both an expedition into the unknown part of the big city and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

Downtown Stories with Zyrken Photographers: Sofia Lindblom, Hanna Reuterwall Text: Marcus ”Zyrken” Gustafsson
The Itinerary #2. This is a series of articles or travel diaries created by our guests. In the second episode, Marcus “Zyrken” Gustafsson, a LA-based parkour artist, shares his story about his experience in Stockholm and at Downtown Camper during the autumn of 2018.
Here we go again, Stockholm. For the past few years, I have been travelling the world as a parkour athlete. If you didn’t know, parkour is a type of street acrobatics, derived from military obstacle course training, where you use the city landscape to your advantage. My passion for parkour takes me to many places, competing and meeting new people. I stay at Downtown Camper when I’m in Stockholm. During my first visit, I was allowed up on the roof to perform some flips, and right there and then, I realised this was not just any hotel. My most recent visit was in October, and this time around I’ll share my experience with you guys. Monday After a long and tedious flight from LA, I finally arrived at Downtown Camper. I really like the theme of nature mixed with that urban feel, and the opportunity to borrow a bike or a skateboard is a great thing, especially for me who is quite active. Once I was checked in, I thought I’d freshen up with “a little nap”. Oh well. Woke up a few hours later, already extremely late for my meeting for a photo shoot that was to take place the day after. When I finally got there, they were all waiting for me and I managed to get by with the classic excuse “jetlag”. Late afternoon, I got back from the meeting and had some time to think about locations for tomorrow’s shoot; definitely the narrow alleys of Old Town and maybe the cliffs by the northern part of Södermalm. If you haven’t visited these places, you should. Jetlagged as I was, I couldn’t keep my eyes up for long, though. Tuesday Woke up super early (no really, like 4AM). As soon as the hotel gym opened, I went up for a quick workout, and after my shower it was time for breakfast. Downtown Camper has one of the grandest breakfasts I have experienced during my last 10 years of travelling.
A few hours later, I met up with the film crew and we walked the spots we’d picked the day before. The City Hall was the first of the locations, a really cool and monumental building just a few minutes walking distance from the hotel, followed by Old Town and Sergels Torg. The filming went smooth and as we finished, I had to get back to get ready for the evening. I was pretty excited to meet up with some longtime friends at Campfire, Downtown Camper’s restaurant. After a few beers in the bar we shortly sat down at our dinner table, and ordered up some brussels sprouts as a starter. The Striploin Steak seemed to have my name written on it, so I chose that as a main, while my friends Filip and Max both ordered the Veggie Burger. Our waiter was a true hero, guiding us through the menu, and helping us choose the best wine to go with our meal. Dinner was great; a lot of grilled food, the smoked butter was a favourite and it all went very well with our wine. Five stars out of five. As usual, my friends and I laughed and joked about the old days. Wednesday Slept so deep last night – I think I finally conquered the jetlag! Stayed in bed late as my next shoot wasn’t until the afternoon. All the more reason to enjoy the comfort of “the great indoors”. As we were finishing up work later on, I realised I was quite late for my flight, so I had to pack in a hurry to catch my plane for my hometown, Helsingborg. Checking out of Downtown Camper and leaving Stockholm for this time. But I’ll be back. Before moving to LA, I actually lived in Stockholm for two years. It’s an awesome city and there’s always something going on here. Would not be surprised if I live here again one day. As for Downtown Camper: See you next month for my birthday! // Marcus
MENU
This is the place where locals and visitors from all over the world meet and socialise with each other. Where they take a break from the everyday hustle. This is where we gather around the fire to share experiences, stories and to enjoy good food while meeting new and old friends. The meal is the focal point and in the kitchen we create exciting dishes close to our hearts. We call our cuisine “comfort food from every corner of the world. Food inspired by childhood memories, travelling and the shifting seasons that put a smile on your face and spreads joy, love and comfort. At Campfire we use the elemental force of fire and extract the flavours of the flames. Here the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversations, laughter and music.

The Magic of Moa Not many people can say that they grant people’s wishes for a living. But whatever you need before, during and after your visit, she’s your girl. And if she manages to put a smile on your face, you have made her day. Meet Downtown Camper’s Guest Relations Expert aka wish granter, Moa. Hello Moa! How did you get into guest relations? From my very first day at Downtown Camper, right back when we opened in September last year, I have been working in the reception here. As I am really passionate about people and having real face-to-face conversations, I slowly grew into my current role. What I love about my job is the social part: Meeting new people, taking the time to listen to our guests and understanding their needs. What kinds of requests do you manage? I would say that most guests turn to me to find out about the hotel and what’s on offer. When you step into Downtown Camper, there are loads of stuff you can explore and take part in. If you want it explained, you can either turn to me or to the Lifestyle Concierge. And if a guest for different reasons is not entirely happy with their stay, my priority is to see how I can help to change the situation for the better. These findings also help us as a hotel to improve and individualise our offering going forward. What is your recommendation for guests staying with us? Downtown Camper is a playground for adults! Even if you’re a born and bred Stockholmer, you will never run out of things to do here. First and foremost, I recommend everyone to check out the activities schedule with all the free events we have on. My personal favourite is probably the film club on Fridays. It’s super cosy, there’s always a great movie showing, and then of course free popcorn for everyone. I’d also recommend The Nest Cocktail Lounge. During daytime, there’s another level of peace and space here, and in the evenings it’s the perfect spot to get together for a drink. The view from up here really takes your breath away.
”Downtown Camper is a playground for adults! Even if you’re a born and bred Stockholmer, you will never run out of things to do here.”
How does one get in touch with you? In the afternoon, I usually sit by the round table in the lobby. If you want to reach me on a specific time, the reception can help you get in touch. I love to meet new people, so don’t be a stranger. Anything else before we go? Basically, my job is to ensure our guests are seen and heard. If you have something on your mind, come talk to me and I’ll make sure you get the help and assistance you need. There are no impossible requests, on the contrary, I will always do my best to make sure you have a magical stay.
What’s on at
Downtown Camper? Hi, there! As Lifestyle Concierges here at Downtown Camper, our role is to make strangers friends, integrating guests with locals, and locals with guests. We are working with some really cool Stockholmers and local business partners, e.g. ATR, Melker Kayaks, Yster and Urskog, so that you can borrow bicycles, SUPs, kayaks, skate- and longboards free of charge. And with Ssideline City, a local community of runners, you can explore the best routes around our beautiful city and meet some new, local friends. Check out our weekly activities in the list below, and come talk to us in the lobby - we’d love to help you find your next adventure. Stay curious and see you soon. - Kristian, Malin and The Lifestyle Team

Below five selected hotspots as marked on the map. You can find all these hotspots and more on our website, on your in-room entertainment system, on Google Maps and the guides are also available as podcasts on iTunes.
1. Vaxholm, Archipelago Spot Norrort, Stockholm “Vaxholm surely lives up to its name as ’The Capital of Stockholm’s Archipelago’. The trip is merely one hour (boat or bus) from Stockholm, and once you’re here, you can have a fika and try the famous local fish; herring. I’d also recommend to take part of the history of Vaxholm at the old citadel. And of course, my favourite: Rent a kayak down at Eriksö and paddle to the islands of Storskär and Lillskär; a 3km-long tour in beautiful surroundings. I love Vaxholm because it’s close to the big city but still has that “petite archipelago village” feeling and offers something for everyone. Walk up to the top of the hill in the village and you’ll have an amazing view of the islands.” – Linnea Stensils, professional kayaker
2. Grease & Peace, Barber Spot Norra Agnegatan 36, Kungsholmen “If you’re looking for the cooler, modern, yet old school look and want to have a real American experience, this barbershop is a good choice. The barbers cut hair in a modern American way.”
2
– Barber Big T, Stockholm-based barber
3. Hellasgården, Outdoor Spot Ältavägen 101, Nacka
2
“If you wish to go out with a mountainbike in tricky terrain, discover a historical lake or try the sauna; Hellasgården is perfect for you. Hellasgården is situated in Älta close to the southern parts of Stockholm where you easily can go by bus. The surroundings offer many possibilities for the outdoors geek: A large outside gym, a beautiful lake where you can ice skate in the winter, MTB tracks, running tracks, a restaurant, kiosk and a sauna - all in the beautiful nature reserve of Nackareservatet.” – Erika Rosenbaum, sustainable lifestyle coach

4. Vintagefabriken, Vintage Spot Svandammsvägen 8, Midsommarkransen “Outside the city, in the hip area of Midsommarkransen, you’ll find a bunch of cute vintage shops. I live in the area, so I have my favourite shops just around the block. A dear favourite is Vintagefabriken, which is a flowery little shop run by two of my friends; Linda and Lollo. They are mainly focused on children’s clothes from the beginning of the last century. But here are also new garments; all carefully selected, handpicked and of high quality, with a vintage touch.” – Emma Sundh, vintage blogger and writer
5. Södra Teatern, Veggie Spot Mosebacke Torg 1, Södermalm
1
“Södra Teatern serves vegetarian and vegan dishes with vegetables in season. The best way is to share 4-5 different dishes with a friend. The food is fresh and fun, with a focus on Swedish cuisine but with a twist. Plus, they have a great wine selection to match the food and an amazing view over Stockholm. Start your evening with a fantastic dinner, then continue to Södra Teatern’s different night clubs and party all night long.” – Mattias Kristiansson, editor at Vegomagasinet
The Stockholm Survival Guide WINTER EDITION
Text: Pontus Holmgren
The cold season in Stockholm can be magical, with crisp air and majestic buildings that stretch towards the clear blue sky. But our cold and dark winter also has its challenges. Here are seven tips for a better winter experience in Stockholm. See you in the snow. Dress warm, from top to toe Occasionally the Stockholm winter can be mild, but eventually, the capital will be struck by that inevitable freeze with snow, icy winds and slippery streets. What to do? Dress for the occasion! Do as the Stockholmers do, tuck yourself into a big, fluffy jacket. Think layers on layers. Put on some long johns, in Sweden known as ‘långkalsonger’. Undergarments made of wool is another must. We apparently leak a lot of body heat from our heads so the beanie is important. Many Stockholmers are spotted wearing knitted beanies. Some girls prefer the kind that points straight up. The cool guys choose the ‘sotarmössa,’ a kind of minimal beanie that the city’s hipsters have taken to heart. Warm shoes are perhaps the most essential, preferable boots with a thick rubber sole. In a pair of these, you can battle both snow and ‘slask’ (that is to say the half-melted slush that you’re left with when the snow starts to melt away).
Winter wonder walks and ice skating romance There are days when Stockholm shows its most enchanting self. When the ice lies thick on Riddarfjärden, the house roofs are all covered in snow and the ice crystals glisten in the treetops. This is the time to head outside. But make sure you plan in some pit stops on your walk. A café, a restaurant and perhaps some museums: cosy spots with good food, warm beverages, and inspiring culture. Take Strandvägen from Nybroplan towards Djurgårdsbron. Crossing the bridge, on your right-hand side, you’ll find the Nordic Museum. This castle-like building was built between 1889 and 1907 and looks like something out of a fairy tale. The architect was Artur Hazelius (1833–1901), also the man behind Skansen. Are you a hopeless romantic? Then visit the ice skating rink in Kungsträdgården, only a couple of blocks away from Downtown Camper. The city’s best ‘winter-in-Central-Park-experience’. The rink is open every day and ice skates can be rented at a small cost.
Experience winter Stockholm from the bike You do know that you can lend bikes from the lobby, right? Don’t let the winter stop you. Stockholm has no less than 2110 km of walkways and bike lanes and the city works hard to keep them clean and secure all year around. They have to. More and more Stockholmers use their bike to go to work, winter or no winter. And when you head out, avoid dressing too warm on your upper body. You’ll find you heat up quite quickly cycling up and down hilly Stockholm. And make sure you’re visible in the dark. Turn on your head and tail lights as soon as the sun starts to set. Don’t forget the reflectors! In Stockholm, the reflector is currently experiencing an upswing as a fashion accessory. A Swedish insurance company recently let some Swedish fashion designers, e.g. the ‘enfant terrible’ Ann-Sofie Back and the denim guru Örjan Andersson design cool reflecting creations. When you get off your bike, keep the reflectors on.
The magic of hot chocolate Being outside in the cold takes energy. If you drink something warm, you’ll regain your strength. And your body temperature. And let’s be honest, what’s better than hot chocolate? This is a beverage with which most Swedes have a special relationship. We associate it with childhood adventures. Those cherished moments when thermoses magically appeared out of your parents’ backpack with this steaming hot beverage. Studies also show that hot chocolate is good for you. It’s said to increase the microcirculation in the skin, which helps us keep warm. The chocolate itself triggers the brain to release endorphins which calm us. So when you get back to the hotel from your next excursion in winter Stockholm, stay calm and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate by the fire.
Find the best (and heated) shortcuts Experienced Stockholmers go from A to B without freezing more than necessary. A knowledge that you, for survival purposes, have to acquire after having spent a few freezing winters in the city. You’ll soon learn the shortcuts that minimise time spent outside in the cold, and downtown it’s quite easy to navigate through malls and department stores. Are you
going from the central station to Stureplan on a cold day? Hurry over Sergels Torg into the built-in shopping centre underneath Hamngatan. Then enter the Nordiska Kompaniet department store and make your way to street level. Continue through the PK Huset mall until you reach Norrlandsgatan. Then you’re on your own, you’ll have to walk the last three, four blocks to Stureplan outside. The subway stations also offer heated shortcuts. Find your way crossing the platforms of the underworld, while getting some culture too: the artwork-adorned walls in the subway are well worth a visit on their own. But if you’ve read tip no 1, you can skip straight to no 6.
Take good care of your skin and lips The winter in Stockholm offers no mercy to skin and lips. The contrast between the rough outside cold and the heated indoors will have an effect on your skin. In other words, make sure to rehydrate. Fatty creams prevent dehydration and keep your skin in check. The lips are extra sensitive. They don’t contain as many layers of skin cells as the regular skin and lose moisture up to three times quicker. Hence, the lips need some extra loving care. There are conflicting opinions as to what product to use, but make sure it contains a moisturiser and is based on natural oils and waxes. Soft lips make it easier to talk, make funny faces and last but not least, to kiss.
Learn the importance of ‘mys’ The Danes have their ‘hygge’ and us Swedes we have our ‘mys’. The word roughly translates to the English ‘cosiness’ or ‘snuggle’. The winter is the time of year when Stockholmers appreciate mys the most, especially the weeks leading up to Christmas. Here are some great mys tips: light some candles and put on a pot of coffee or hot chocolate. Or even better: glögg. This warm drink goes best with some saffron buns and gingerbread on the side, which together is the very essence of ‘julmys’. Why not cosy up on the sofa and let yourself be swept away by some Stockholm fiction classics: Jens Lapidus’ hardcore Stockholm Noir trilogy, Bo Widerberg’s film ‘Mannen på Taket’ or ‘Stockholm’, starring Ethan Hawke and Noomi Rapace. The film is about the legendary Norrmalmstorg robbery in 1973, a dramatic event that produced the famous expression ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. Kicking back with a thriller is also known as ‘mysrys’.
