The Adventure-seekers Four shieldmaidens on a mission.
Bike is the New Black
Everything you need to explore the city by bike.
Stockholm’s New Rooftop Hangout
The place to be, among the clouds.
Think about how much we have and yet how often we long for something different. Consider how much we love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our standard but long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but be able to enjoy nature. To be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpack and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather and discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private but everything at the same time, all the time. We are flexible and diverse, exploring ’bon vivants’. To us luxury is never about the surface. To us it’s about connections and encounters, contrasts and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV to hear new stories, get new impressions – or suddenly find ourselves out of reach, not being online all the time. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. We are curious and hungry but are expected to be creative in standardised, air-conditioned, rooms while we long for encounters and conversations during a hike that might lead us to a completely different place than we expected. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that will work for both an expedition into the unknown part of the big city and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.
The Nest outdoor terrace is open every day after 20.00, except on Wednesdays when the Night Swimmers take over the pool.
Stockholm’s New Rooftop Hangout Photographers: Robin Hayes, Hanna Reuterwall
If you are walking down an empty street on a sunny summer’s day in Stockholm, and you wonder where all the people have gone, here’s the answer; to a rooftop bar or a sun-drenched café terrace nearby. The Stockholmers know how to leverage on the good weather and spend a day at leisure in the sun, when the opportunity arises. If you suddenly get an inclination of a similar sort as explained above, press ”9” on the lift button. It will take you to The Nest Cocktail Lounge. From here, you do not only have a magnificent Stockholm at your feet, but the clouds and the birds are your new friends. And from the rooftop, you can keep an eye on what’s going on in the city. Check out the Old Town from above, sneak-a-peek on the King’s whereabouts in the royal castle, admire the cool ships docked at Skeppsholmen. All surrounded by Stockholm’s blue waters. The Nest’s amazing outdoor terrace is open every day from 20.00, except on Wednesdays. Fruity-fresh Drinks The drinks menu is a homage to our rooftop neighbours, the birds. Up here, we offer innovative and refreshing signature cocktails and mocktails of seasonally sourced ingredients, fruits and berries: the taste of summer nights in Stockholm. The recipes have been carefully put together by our Bar Manager, and are made in front of your eyes, pine fresh. Sit back, have a sip and enjoy the mile-wide views over Stockholm’s skyline and waters. The cocktail lounge is open for everyone looking to get away from the pulse of the city for a while. Breakfast & Lunch on the Top Fill your tummy with healthy, fresh food and set yourself up for another day of exploring in the city. The Nest’s menu offers light, healthy and tasty food that will not only meet your body’s nutritional needs but also tease your taste buds. Breakfast is served from 09.00-11.30, and lunch 12.00-14.00. Reservations only, so book through the Campfire restaurant or call ”2150” from your in-room telephone. You can also pop up to The Nest for a coffee, tea or a super-delicious smoothie - served all day, no reservation required. Mood-altering Music in July* Don’t miss the best beats from up above! Our music genius Miki Grujovic is sourcing the best DJs in the city this summer and offering a festive mood on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Join us from 20.00 till Midnight in The Nest Cocktail Lounge; the Downtown DJs play from The Nest all July.
Night Swimmers in The Nest* During Wednesdays this summer, the Night Swimmers take over The Nest! During these days, we have expanded the opening times and will keep the wellness area open until 22.00. Note that there’s a third slot time for this, exclusively for access between 20.00 to 22.00. And remember the sunscreen.
The Nest Wellness is open until 22.00 every Wednesday this summer. Book your spot, chill out in the pool and watch the sun go down over the city.

Bike is the New Black Photographers: Izabella Englund, Nigel Van Der Horst
Stockholm is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, with no less than 2110 km of walkways and bike lanes. The city works hard to keep them clear and secure all year around. They have to. More and more Stockholmers use their bike to go to work, no matter the season. The bike is the perfect way to get around and explore the many parts of the city, both green and urban; it’s cheap and easy, you get exercise, it’s eco-friendly and no need to circle the city for one hour if you want to sit down in a café – you just park anywhere, for free. Bicycle hotspot Since September last year, we have together with our partner, And The Revolution, been able to offer a Bike Workshop in the lobby, with gear one may need for adapting the bikes and refilling air in the tires. We are now upgrading the Bike Workshop to a Bike Kitchen, to offer a more accessible space for explorers that prefer the bike as a mean of transportation. The Bike Kitchen is open for everyone needing to use a stand to do some quick work on their bike, offering sets of tools for a loan, free of charge. Helpful tips You do know that you can borrow bikes from the lobby, right? But be an early riser on the sunny days, as they are popular. And don’t forget a helmet. When you head out, avoid dressing too warm on your upper body. You’ll find you heat up quite quickly cycling up and down hilly Stockholm. Put your jumper on the parcel holder instead. Bring a bottle of water and refuel with an ice cream in the lobby before rolling down the street. Experience the locals’ Stockholm – make use of our own Stockholm guide, the Downtown Hotspots, for helpful tips and recommendations for what to see and where to eat. The Downtown Hotspots can be found on our website, and are available as podcasts on iTunes and on Google Maps. Explore with new friends If you want to meet fellow cyclists, we suggest you join us on Sundays as the Bicycle Slow Ride heads out for some city exploring on two wheels. After the tour, we grab a beer at the bar, share some stories, and hang out together around the campfire. Stay curious!
Experience Stockholm like a true Stockholmer - from the bike. During the summer, you will be able to get helpful tips and tricks related to the bike, refill tires and – of course - have a cold drink and a snack before you head out!
What’s On
at Downtown Camper? Hi, there! As Lifestyle Concierges here at Downtown Camper, our role is to make strangers friends, integrating guests with locals and locals with guests. Ssideline City is a community of runners who will show you the best routes around our beautiful city and ABLE Lounge offers you everyday activities and workshops on holistic well-being. Check out our weekly activities in the list below, and come talk to us in the lobby - we’d love to help you find your next adventure. Stay curious and see you soon! Below five selected hotspots as marked on the map. You can find all the Downtown Hotspots on our website, on your in-room entertainment system, on Google Maps and the guides are also available as podcasts on iTunes.
1. Grinda, Archipelago Spot Stockholm Archipelago “I spent all of my summers as a kid close to this beautiful island, and I still travel here a lot. It’s the perfect day trip to the central archipelago where you can experience a lot, have something to eat and also spend the night if you want to. I love the walking trail around the island; it’s not too far so you can walk or run around the whole island and see animals like sheep and chicken, buy ice cream and go for a swim. Also, you can explore some small trails connected to the bigger trail. On the north side, there are some hidden pebble beaches and rocks where you can go for a swim away from most of the tourists. If you are lucky, there might be what we in Sweden call a ”räkfrossa” down at the Restaurant Framfickan in the harbour. It’s certainly something to try if you like seafood and want to try a Swedish tradition.” – Linnea Stensils, professional kayaker
2. Paul & Friends, Sneaker Spot Hamngatan 18-20, Norrmalm “Inside the NK department store lies the hidden sneaker and streetwear pearl Paul & Friends. It has undoubtedly Stockholm’s most well-curated range of high fashion sneakers, and the rights to sell some very rare and hyped sneakers often available in store. Here you can find Y-3 Adidas collaborations, Maison Margiela or why not the latest Comme de Garçon / Converse collab.”
2
– Robin Wiman, art director and sneakers enthusiast
3. King Scoopa, Ice Cream Spot Hornsgatan 156, Södermalm
5
3
“A fairly new addition to the ice cream scene here in Stockholm. This ice cream bar opened summer 2016 when two brothers got inspired by the Ben & Jerry’s documentary. They describe their ice cream as ’cool’ and the great thing is that you can get your ice cream in a doughnut. A very trendy spot that is worth trying if you’re in the neighbourhood.” – Elisabeth Avrotin, ice cream connoisseur
4. High Valley Skate World, Skate Spot Högdalen, Stockholm
1
“This is the biggest skate park in Stockholm, and it has a lot of different things to skate. It’s really, really fun. You can be a beginner, you can get your kicks there or you can be a radical vert skater and still enjoy it. It’s a great place, and it’s also a lovely place to hang out. There are always people hanging out here, camping and looking at the people skating – so it’s a really fun park.” – Jörgen Brennicke, skater and photographer
5. Boulebar, Best of Stockholm Spots Rådhuset, Kungsholmen “I love nothing more, come a weekend, than a good game of boule and brunch with my friends. Boule, originally from France, is making a trendy resurgence in Stockholm with a number of different locations popping up around the city. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long day and get together with some friends over a game.”

The Stockholm Survival Guide SUMMER EDITION
Written by: Rebecca Knutsson, Defining New Wayz
Oh, summer in Stockholm. This is when you notice a slow transition of colour creeping back into peoples wardrobes, the spring in everyone’s step, possibly the odd smile from a stranger and the introduction of “AW” (afterwork). Yes, the Swedish dark depression has lifted, welcome to Summer in Stockholm. New to Sweden? Here are some noteworthy tips to get you safely through these glorious sunny months.
1. Swedish Tradition #1 - Midsummer Swedes are sticklers for certain traditions. Midsummer, more prominent than Christmas, is celebrated this year on June 22nd. Most people head out of the city to their summer houses. God forbid, should you be left behind in town. If you’ve never experienced Midsummer, you’re in for a treat. First of all, and a bit confusing; Swedes don’t celebrate on Midsummer’s Day, they’re far too impatient for that, no they celebrate on Midsummer’s Eve. Secondly, you’re going to experience some of the weirdest dancing you have ever come across, think frogs crossed with pigs and the hokey cokey, while dancing around a fertility pole, with flowers around your head. If you’re lucky, Sweden’s Eurovision finalist is singing, more likely though is a villager with a voice like a strangled cat. If you make it through this, then thirdly, you’ll get to feast on ‘sill’ (pickled herring), washed down with a selection of ‘nubbe’. Nubbe could to a foreigner only be described as paint stripper flavoured with herbs. Enjoy! 2. Allemansrätten The freedom to roam, or ”everyman’s right”, is the general public’s right to access certain public or privately-owned land for recreation and exercise. The Swedes exercise this general human right to its maximum; enjoying the freedom to roam in the Swedish mountains, coastlines and archipelago. There are some important dos and don’ts to bear in mind before venturing out into the wilderness. You can camp, walk, cycle, fish, swim on any land except private gardens, near a dwelling or land under cultivation. You must take care of nature and wildlife and show consideration to landowners and others enjoying the countryside. In short, don’t disturb, litter or destroy.
3. Getting Around Stockholm has an excellent transport system consisting of trains, tubes, trams, buses and boats, which are nearly all covered by your SL card. Some of the boats are privately owned and charge a small fee to take you from A to B but it’s well worth it. If public transport doesn’t float your boat, then why not grab a bike from the hotel and head out along the many cycle paths that cover the city. If you’re feeling adventurous, then you could try your hand at kayaking. Be extra mindful on the roads during student examination season. Large trucks travel around the city, loaded with partying kids celebrating the end of high school. 4. Bathing Spots An abundance of water surrounds the many islands that make up this fabulous city. There is an excellent selection of sunbathing and swimming spots to choose from, and the fantastic news is they’re all on our doorstep. Tantolunden is a favourite spot for all those alternative Stockholmers; located in the southern part of town in Södermalm. Here you can enjoy the sauna if you wish, and it’s a perfect spot for bbqs and picnics. Another great place is Långholmsbadet located on Långholmen. Opposite, on the neighbouring island, you have Smedsuddsbadet, at Rålambshov Park Beach which is popular with families. For those of you slightly more adventurous, we can highly recommend Hellasgården. This natural beauty is just 20 minutes from Slussen and is home to a large freshwater lake and beautiful forests to hike, bike or walk around. 5. Swedish Tradition #2 - Crayfish Parties Another fun and crazy holiday tradition is the Crayfish Party, which can be held anytime from August to September. This tradition’s origins go back to the early 1900’s when fishing restrictions were put in place to reduce overfishing. Top tips for a Crayfish party: load up on cheese pie, potato salad and any other stomach-filling food. Those crayfish are not going to line your stomach sufficiently for all the (once again) nubbe you’re likely to be drinking, after each silly drinking song. If you’re lucky, your host will have printed off phonetical song sheets for you, if not, we suggest mumbling the same tune everyone else is singing,
looking enthusiastic, and whatever you do, don’t say ‘cheers’. In Sweden, we do the awkward stare off and then take our shot in half. Always half. One other important note to mention is that slurping is an absolute must. If you leave the legs of the crayfish without first slurping all the juice from them, you will get funny looks. Lastly, shower as soon as you get back, you will be smelling like a giant walking crayfish for days to come, along with everything you were wearing. 6. Swedish Summer Weather Sweden isn’t guaranteed good weather all summer long, believe it or not. But for those inevitable rainy days, there are great places to visit. Fotografiska, located in the heart of Stockholm on Södermalm, is an international meeting place where everything revolves around photography. The museum features four major exhibitions per year and approximately 15-20 minor ones. The restaurant is well worth a visit, offering panoramic views of Stockholm. The Vasa Museum offers a unique experience to see the only, almost fully intact, 17th century ship, ever to be salvaged. Embarrassingly for the King of Sweden who had commissioned Vasa, it sank within minutes of its maiden voyage in 1628. Lovingly restored over the years, just recently all the bolts were removed and replaced with new versions, lightening it by eight tons. 7. Party Like it’s 1989 Stockholm comes into its own when the sun comes out, and there’s no better place to party like it’s 1989 than at Trädgården. A unique, festival-like club located under the Skanstull bridge in Södermalm. This outdoor club is a psychedelic explosion of colour and crazy music. Arrive early to avoid the queues (or even better, get yourself on the guest list). Dance, watch live performances, try some table tennis or pétanque. If you get a bit peckish, there’s a selection of things to eat. Another chance to party is offered by Mr French, which has definitely placed its name firmly on the map, described as one of the hottest day parties in Stockholm. You’ll be dancing to saxophonists, bongo drummers and performances while sipping on cool drinks and laughing with old and new friends. Yes, you get our point; the summer is the season to party in Stockholm.

The Adventure-seekers Photographers: Ted Andersson, Nigel van der Horst
We’ve all heard about the Vikings - skilful, ferocious warrior men and women who crossed seas to conquer new territory. Now, 1000 years later, our girls Emma and Nina in reservations, lifestyle assistant Malin, and Caroline, our co-head chef, are about to embark on a similar journey of a lifetime. Competing against world-elite professional athletes, they will navigate a 580-km-long ‘trail of the Vikings’ in August. As the first-ever all-women team in the Nordic Islands Adventure Race, and without any prior experience, they may seem like the clear underdogs. But to their advantage is, much like their ancestors, an innate curiosity to explore, and uniting them is the challenge that lies before them. Hiking, running, kayaking, cycling and pack rafting, they will navigate across land and open waters on a venture that ensures little sleep and loads of surprises. The Downtown Camper ‘shieldmaidens’ seem little concerned about their impending adventure. And the expression “living the brand” just took on a whole new meaning. Hi girls, what brought on this epic idea? Emma: It was Kristian (Lifestyle Concierge at Downtown Camper) who came up to us one day and said: “Oh, by the way, we are sponsoring the Nordic Islands Adventure Race and might be able to set up our own team, if you’re interested”. We all said yes without hesitating. None of us has ever done anything like this before. With a map and a compass, we’ll plan and execute a journey from Stockholm to Turku in Finland, competing against professional teams from all over the world. We think we’ll finish the race in approximately six days, taking into account that we only sleep about three hours a night. Tell us about the team! Caroline: We all have different backgrounds, strengths and weaknesses. I’ve been into horses all my life, I love speed, and I’m always on the lookout for adventure. Having worked in a kitchen for 12 years, I also know to roll up my sleeves when the going gets tough. Malin has a background in the Defense and has been into Swimrun and Triathlon for many years. With her military experience, Malin is our natural team captain. Emma is a good runner and a real fighter. She grew up in the United States and brings to the team that positivity and can-do attitude. Our sunshine is Nina, more robust and resilient than she takes credit for. She makes sure the mood is on top, and knowing her; she will be the first one to offer to carry the one who falls!
What are your thoughts about the undertaking? Nina: Injuries are prevalent, and they can be bad, taking into account the problematic navigation, intense trekking, and extensive over-seas crossings. I’ve never set foot in a kayak or gone swimming in the open sea. But my biggest fear is that I could hurt myself beforehand and not be able to participate. I guess our biggest asset is that we are four girls with a positive attitude and that we all firmly believe that nothing is impossible. Malin: Yes, all of us love a challenge and are maybe too fearless for our own good. The navigation in this adventure race will be a big challenge for me personally. My work includes activity and meeting new people, so I am naturally curious and up for the task, but I worry about not getting enough sleep and having wet feet most of the time. Of course, it will be tough physically, but as Nina said, the mental part is more difficult. You never know what’s going to happen around the next corner. So, how do you prepare? Malin: We have lots of help from our coach Marika Wagner and from Staffan Björklund, who is organising the race. Josh Beech, from England’s national team in orienteering, is training us once a week. We have a practice planned with Kalle Zachari, something I think will be a lot of fun and a real push for us, and our sponsors have been fantastic supplying us with their expertise. So all together, we have a great network around us. We are also participating in smaller competitions before the race to find out how we work together as a team when it matters. We are all competitive persons, but we know we don’t stand a chance next to the teams that compete professionally in this field. This challenge is on a personal level and as a team, in achieving something together. We will try not to focus on the time so much, and to have fun during the race - hopefully that’s an advantage. The Vikings never conquered Finland, but will you? Nina: Haha, we’ll do our best. This race is about conquering our fears and achieving something together as a team. We all love adventure, and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, a memory for life. Follow Malin, Emma, Nina and Caroline on their adventure as we live-broadcast from Nightwood during the Nordic Islands Adventure Race, 12-18 August. A special thank you to Puma, Naturkompaniet, Cykloteket and Melker Kayaks for your support.
