Think about how much we have and yet how often we long for something different. Consider how much we love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our standard but long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but be able to enjoy nature. To be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpack and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather and discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private but everything at the same time, all the time. We are flexible and diverse, exploring ’bon vivants’. To us luxury is never about the surface. To us it’s about connections and encounters, contrasts and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV to hear new stories, get new impressions – or suddenly find ourselves out of reach, not being online all the time. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. We are curious and hungry but are expected to be creative in standardised, air-conditioned, rooms while we long for encounters and conversations during a hike that might lead us to a completely different place than we expected. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that will work for both an expedition into the unknown part of the big city and for the party tonight. Campfire is gaining recognition as the heart and social hub of Downtown Camper, serving up an eclectic abundance of comfort food from all corners of the world. We stepped into the restaurant to meet with Food & Beverage Manager Claes Benediktsson and creative Head Chef Caroline Åkerstam. Meticulous planning, a lot of passion, seamless cooperation and a good sense of humour is key in making sure operations run smooth from early hours to late at night. Although diverse, Campfire is a close-knit team. Or in Caroline’s own words; ”This is my family”. Hi there, tell us about Campfire! Claes: At Campfire we want every guest to feel relaxed and welcome. The fire is essential in here. Not only as an element in the cooking process, but also in bringing that warm and cosy atmosphere you get when you are out camping; gathering around the campfire, sharing stories, and making memories with friends. In the kitchen, we use that charcoal-grilled taste from the flames to create unpretentious dishes with a lot of flavours, resulting in meals you can share with your friends and family, talk about, taste from each other’s plates, and simply enjoy together. Where do you get the inspiration for the menu? Caroline: In the kitchen, our inspiration comes from trips around the world, childhood memories - past and new experiences. Using the grill is not only a healthy way to prepare food, it also brings out the best flavours in the ingredients. As an example, we receive loads of compliments for our smoked butter. And we try not to tamper too much with the ingredients, but focus on enhancing their natural taste instead. It’s a busy hotel. How do you guys do it? Caroline: In a big restaurant like this, the kitchen rarely sleeps. Planning, cleaning and routine are crucial here. If we have a poor collaboration between the kitchen, service and runners, everything is very likely to fall apart. We have several meetings between the departments every day, so that we can coordinate our efforts and plan ahead. Where does the food come from? Caroline: We try to work as seasonally as we can, and work WITH the environment. Depending on the season, vegetables come from Sweden, but also as far down as Morocco. The fish is MSC labelled from Norway; the company Leröy has been around since the late 1800’s.
We do our best to stay up-to-date and review our assortment depending on overfishing reports or reduced demand. We have a great relationship with our suppliers. Johan i Hallen, as an example, is an older establishment from the early 1900’s that delivers our meat. They have their production down in Gothenburg with smaller productions throughout the country. We have produced two different types of sausages for the menu in cooperation with them. Both I and Claes worked with this supplier in previous positions and they always provide high quality. Campfire has guests from all over the world. How do you meet everyone’s needs? Claes: As we are a very diverse and international team, we’ve got influences from all over the world, on both the menu and in the bar. And as we go, we learn what works with our guests and what we need to adjust. Caroline: I agree, and given how our menu is designed and presented, I think that there is something for everyone to enjoy. People have become more aware of what they eat, and we have many guests that are flexitarians, semi-vegetarians and vegans, which is great. Our answer is to make a lot of the dishes completely lactose-free, and keep gluten-free options and nutritious vegan meals on the menu to make sure we have something for everyone. What is the ’crowd pleaser’ on the menu? Caroline: Definitely the Black Fire Edt Burger – it’s been very popular and that’s why we’ve kept it on the menu from start. It’s simple, fills you up, people know it and really, isn’t the burger everyone’s ”guilty pleasure”? Our Mexican Fiesta is also popular – as with the burger, you can eat it with your hands. It’s been great chatting with you. Just one more question: what motivates you? Claes: There is nothing better than coming off a really tough and hectic service with your team and to get the confirmation that the guests are happy when they leave. Caroline: My colleagues. I never feel it’s hard to go to work, it’s always fun and I feel happy when I’m here. The team at Campfire is my family. This is the place where locals and visitors from all over the world meet and socialise with each other. Where they take a break from the everyday hustle. This is where we gather around the fire to share experiences, stories and to enjoy good food while meeting new and old friends. The meal is the focal point and in the kitchen we create exciting dishes close to our hearts. We call our cuisine “comfort food from every corner of the world�. Food inspired by childhood memories, travelling and the shifting seasons that put a smile on your face and spreads joy, love and comfort. At Campfire we use the elemental force of fire and extract the flavours of the flames. Here the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversations, laughter and music.

”Why are there no fun hotels in Stockholm?” Erik Nissen Johansen knows which questions to ask and this quality has taken him far in life. His long and productive career kicked off in 1988, when he founded the art collective that was later to be known as the award-winning hospitality design studio, Stylt Trampoli. But it wasn’t until four years ago, that he really saw his chance to create a hotel that stood out from the rest; a truly fun hotel with a laid-back and spontaneous vibe, where luxury is defined by generosity, sociability, inspiration and new experiences: Downtown Camper was taking shape. Hello Erik! How did it all start? I was contacted by Scandic in November four years ago, with a brief that explained how hotel guests are mixing business and pleasure. I thought about it for a while, and one of my first thoughts were: why are there no fun city hotels? What was your vision and inspiration? Basically the vision was to create a concept and design to attract all people who feel more comfortable in their leisure clothes than their work suits, and everyone that prefers a fun hotel over a boring one. We wanted to create something new for modern, urban explorers. Located right in the beating heart of the city, yet inspired by nature, Downtown Camper satisfies both our longing for the great outdoors and our love for the pulse of city life. The hotel is designed to be the starting point for curious travellers who want to discover the real Stockholm. What does the project mean to you personally? First of all, Downtown Camper goes very well together with my own personality, it’s something I can relate to and stand for 100%. I’m very happy and proud of the global media attention the Downtown Camper project got; we’ve been nominated in no less than three categories in the prestigious AHEAD Awards, and that speaks for itself. And being named the “The World’s Best Hangout” by National Geographic (my favorite magazine) was more than we ever expected. Thank you Erik. So, what’s your favourite space in the hotel? Game Room. Our vision was to bring back the fun to Stockholm, and during my most recent visit to Downtown Camper, I peeked into Game Room. People were enjoying the space just as we had hoped they would. I saw the fun, and it was good.
What’s On at Downtown Camper? Hi, there! As Lifestyle Concierges here at Downtown Camper, our role is to make strangers friends, integrating guests with locals and locals with guests. 1. St John’s Church, Haunted Spot Kammakargatan 12, Norrmalm “An odd place, and harbouring one of the largest cemeteries in central Stockholm, St John’s church / Johannes Kyrka has seen it all. From devil worshiping and necromancy during the late 18th century, to the ghastly story of a little girl who unknowingly brought home a piece of an old shroud and got a visit from beyond the grave that frightened her to death. Located in a rather small space, they still manage to fit in a book store with a personal selection, a cafe, and an impressive event calendar. They host authors and talks several times a week, and in just a few years’ time they have become one of the most important literal platforms in Stockholm. The skatepark is what got me back to skateboarding. “Right behind Musikhögskolan by Stadion you’ll find Fosch Artisan Pâtisserie, which opened their doors in June 2016. The Pâtisserie is owned by Malin Eklund and Damien Foschiatti and their specialties are French inspired pastries with Swedish flavours. I warmly recommend a chocolate mousse that they’ve named 3-C and consists of crème brûlée with vanilla and crispy caramel made out of cocoa shell. The toughest challenge you’ll face while visiting this café is to make the right choice since there is so much to choose from.” – Robert Kwok, fika blogger

Fotografiska, Selfie Spot Stadsgårdshamnen 22, Södermalm “Well, it might be a bit ironic for me to recommend you to go and take pictures at a place called Fotografiska as the word ”foto” obviously means ”photo” in Swedish. But the art here is amazing and incredibly beautiful and if you love looking at good pictures you should go here. Posters, art work and sculptures - you can find everything here. Fotografiska is also located perfectly by the water which gives you an amazing view, and the large windows in the café offers good natural light for your pictures.”

The Stockholm Survival Guide AUTUMN EDITION
Stockholm, like any other city, has its peculiarities. As a visitor it’s sometimes easy to feel a little out of place. How do you walk? How do you talk? How do you find your way? Here are seven tips that will help you get into the game quicker. So relax, soon you’ll blend in like a local. “Hej!” Stockholmers are social creatures that love to hang out with friends, but when meeting new people they can be a bit reserved at first. The opposite to people from Gothenburg who happily greet everyone, but for the people of Stockholm a silent nod is sometimes about all you get. They’ll play it cool. After all, they are from the big city and not the countryside. If you are to greet a local say “Hej” (Hello) or try one of the slang versions “Tjena” or “Tja” (similar to “Hey” or “Yo”). That will surely break the ice and you’ll get a “Hej” and a smile in return. Do as the pigeons of Farsta (a borough south of town) do: take the subway. Over 60 different species of birds can be found in central Stockholm. One of the more commonly occurring species is the wood pigeon that, like the Stockholmer, is a social and faithful bird that often mates for life. And like every big city, you’ll also spot city pigeons here. In Stockholm, some of the more developed specimens have taken their urban bird life to a whole new level. They have started riding the subway! The so called Farsta Pigeons can be seen getting on the train at the station of Hökarängen and getting off at Farsta Centrum, two of the stations on the green subway line that are above ground. The birds have learned that the subway will automatically take them to new places where they can find food. So, if you are in a hurry to get from A to B, do like the Farsta Pigeons and take the subway. Don’t hesitate – just keep walking! Stockholmers consider themselves early adopters. They quickly absorb the latest and greatest trends and pay no attention to the fact that they live in a cold distant corner of northern Europe. Instead
they act like they live in Manhattan but they never seem to be able to master all the codes of metropolitan living. Like how you pass a person on the sidewalk without bumping into them. In the big cities like New York and London you rarely see any collisions between two pedestrians, but in Stockholm they get caught in an awkward rocking back and forth situation surprisingly often, where as one person moves to the right, the other moves to the left and so on until one person is able to break the spell and continue walking. So, if you find yourself on a collision course with someone while strolling in the city, don’t hesitate, just keep on walking. Orientate yourself. 365 steps up. When you arrive in Stockholm it can be hard to find your way. The city is surrounded by water and the neighbourhoods are spread out over different islands. To get a good overview, head to one of the city’s vantage points. On the heights of Södermalm there are several great places to admire the cityscape from, like Mariaberget, Katarinavägen or, right across town, from the 155 meters tall Kaknästornet, the tallest building in Stockholm. The most central vantage point can be found in the tower of Stockholm’s city hall, designed by the tenacious architect Ragnar Östberg and inaugurated in 1923. The tower is 106 meters tall and the stairs to the top consists of 365 steps. From the top you can enjoy a 360 degree view of Stockholm. Admission is 50 SEK. Up and down on a bike. Every day around 100 000 of the city’s inhabitants get on their bikes to get to and from work, and in rush traffic they move fast. Fastest of them all are the bike couriers and “mamils” (middle-aged men in lycra), and in places like Götgatsbacken by Slussen you have to pay extra attention. Exploring the city by bike has its advantages, though. You get to experience the street life, architecture, enjoy amazing views and all the lush and green open areas with all your senses. You can also move around quickly and even reach destinations outside the city in no time. But be prepared for all
the hills. Compared to other bike-friendly cities Stockholm is extremely hilly with steep cliffs and bridges and sometimes you really need to make an effort to reach your destination. But that doesn’t stop locals from riding their bikes. So if you really want to blend in, do as the locals do and take the bike. You can also borrow a bike at the hotel’s front desk. But don’t forget the helmet. Cards Only. In a couple of years when the hipster scene in Stockholm has evolved even further, cash will probably be cool again. The beard-cladded men that today can be seen brewing IPAs will probably start forging their very own silver coins by then. But in autumn 2018 your credit card is still king as more and more places only accept cards. The coolest and simplest method of payment is called Swish, a Swedish payment app. Unfortunately you need a bank account in Sweden to use it. Sorry. The weather, Slussen and Zlatan. What topics of conversation are suitable to have with locals? The weather is always a safe bet. Life in the city follows the shifting seasons and there is always a phrase that will fit the current forecast. “How wonderful to see the sun!” and “We have longed for this rain” or “Been a long time since we saw this much snow”. If you are in the neighbourhood Södermalm ask “How is Bajen doing?”. That’s the nickname for the local football team Hammarby. In the same area you’ll be very likely to find a hipster who loves to talk about locally brewed beer, sneakers and beard grooming. But if you really want to get the conversation going with a local, ask them about Slussen, the hub that connects Södermalm and the Old City. It has been under construction for the last couple of years, and everyone, and we mean absolutely everyone, has an opinion about the project. Ironically, no one seems to know when it will be finished. If all else fails you can always say something about Zlatan.

This is a series of articles or travel diaries created by our guests. In the first episode, Lucie Herrmann, a Berlin-based travel writer and lifestyle blogger, shares her story about her experience at Downtown Camper during the summer of 2018.
I’ve travelled a lot during the past few years. I went to many cities, countries and all kinds of hotels. But out of all the places, I really fell in love with Stockholm. This is my fourth visit to the city within the last nine months. And I must say Downtown Camper is a hotel I return to. This is where I find both the motivation to work and the peace to relax. I decided to bring a group of my closest friends to Stockholm, to show them the city that I love, hang out, and to have a good time together away from Berlin. This is how it all went down. Day 1 We arrived late in the day, and the thermometer showed 32 degrees: the hottest summer ever in the city, as in many parts of Europe. In the lobby, we were welcomed with some ice cream and after check-in, we moved into our Camper Co-Living suite. This is a new way to travel with friends or family, and I have never come across anything even similar. Three double rooms were connected to the main suite, which felt more like a nice apartment than a hotel room, to be honest. There was plenty of space for all of us; we could socialise in the “living room” and then go back to our own bed rooms if we wanted to work or be alone for a while. It was brilliant. As we were all pretty tired after the flight, we had quick drink down in the bar and then went off to bed, falling asleep with the TV still on. Day 2 Imagine sitting in a lounge with a view over Stockholm, having a slow breakfast whilst watching birds feed their chicks on top of the opposite building. The breakfast at The Nest is a beautiful tray of selected, colourful and healthy food in a relaxing environment (and it was included in our room rate). A great start to the day. After working a few hours, we decided to join the Walk with Us, which is an experience offered by the hotel. The staff of Downtown Camper takes you on a sociable and leisurely walk through the city and show you all their favourite spots. A good way to see the city through the eyes of the locals, and to meet some new friends.
Hatha yoga - every Monday and Friday in the gym.
After a long day in the city, exploring some quirky shops in Södermalm and strolling down the narrow streets of the old town, we had a quick siesta and then got ourselves ready for dinner. Campfire, the hotel’s restaurant, serves grilled “comfort food” with an international twist. I tried the Veggie Burger and shared a few smaller plates with the band. All were delicious. As we were paying our bill, the waitress told us about the “next big thing” at Downtown Camper: On Saturdays, the pool area on the rooftop turns into a laid-back pool party – the Night Swimmers. We were sold, and off we went to join the fun. Think umbrella cocktails, cool music and an epic view of the sunset. It was really something. After a few hours floating around in the pool, “swim dancing” and sipping on cold drinks, we headed back to our room and slept like babies. I mean, for sure. Day 3 The next morning (and a bit hung over, I must admit) my “partner in crime” and I snuck out of bed to order up some room service breakfast for all of us. It didn’t take long before the rest of the sleepy crew woke up by the smell of fresh coffee, and we all enjoyed a nice breakfast in bed. I had a quick look on the weather forecast: 30 degrees. Perfect for today’s plan: We went down to the Lifestyle Concierge’s desk and they hooked us up with some SUPs. This “stand up paddling” thing is something new to me, but we had some very nice hours on the water. On our way back to the hotel, we took a small detour to have dinner at Tjoget, a really cool restaurant / bar in the area of Hornstull in the south, stayed there for a cocktail and then took a taxi back “home”. Day 4 As you might have figured already, I am an early riser. I was the only one in our group who woke up early to join the Hatha yoga in The Nest. A small class of just seven people, and if you’re a hotel guest, you can join. Sorry friends – if you snooze, you lose. Following yoga, I had a quick workout in the gym and really enjoyed the calm atmosphere up there. Once my sleepy travel companions finally were awake, we packed our stuff together and went downstairs to enjoy the big breakfast buffet. A short digestive walk to say goodbye to the city – and then off to the airport. Bellies still full, and very happy with our weekend. I will definitely be back soon, and to be honest, I think my crush on Stockholm has rubbed off on my friends. See you soon. Love Lucie
