Winter Nesting

Escape the cold - set camp in The Nest.

Meet Kristian, Downtown Camper’s Lifestyle Concierge.

The World in a Cocktail Glass

Explore all things stirred and shaken with the man behind the bar.

Think about how much we have and yet how often we long for something different. Consider how much we love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our standard but long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but be able to enjoy nature. To be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpack and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather and discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private but everything at the same time, all the time. We are diverse and curious, exploring ’bon vivants’. To us, luxury is never about the surface. It’s about connections and encounters, contrasts and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV to hear new stories, get new impressions – or suddenly find ourselves out of reach, not being online all the time. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that works for both an expedition into the unknown part of the city and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

Drink responsively

The World in a Cocktail Glass Oh, hotel bars. There’s no knowing just who you might run into; a rock climber from Norway? A lawyer from Singapore? A world-famous yogi from India? One thing’s for sure; places like these open up new worlds to you, where spontaneous meetings can lead to inspiring conversations and new connections. It’s almost like a modern version of the old times’ sailors bars - where stories, information and experiences are continually being exchanged. After many years working the local scene, Downtown Camper’s Bar Manager Daniel now finds his influence to be of a global kind. And it’s reflected in his cocktail creations. In The Nest, a new continent is highlighted every season, and passing through the ”catalyst” of Daniel and his team, the cocktails obtain a truly unique, local expression. Welcome to a world of new taste experiences at Downtown Camper. Hi Daniel, tell us about the bar scene at Downtown Camper. We have two bars at the hotel; The Nest Cocktail Lounge located on the hotel’s top floor, and Campfire Bar on the entrance floor. The Nest is our experimental cocktail bar, where guests come for unique and bespoke cocktails and to experience something new. This season, the cocktail menu draws inspiration from the south and central America; however we always interpret it in our own, local way. We only use our homemade syrups and infusions, influenced by tastes from all around the globe. Campfire has a cool and laid-back pub vibe and is a popular spot for after work. In addition to a wide selection of beer, you will also find quite an impressive wine list - sourced and curated by our Sommelier, Niclas. So if you are into wine, this is the place to be. How does a hotel bar differ from a “regular” bar? Our guests come from all over the world, and that requires us to be adaptable and flexible. There’s no risk of becoming bored working in a hotel bar; we always have to be on our feet to meet and exceed the expectations and desires of all our guests. One of the many things that connect us - no matter where we come from - is the need to come together, hang out with friends and family, and take a break from the everyday commotion. What are the most prominent trends when it comes to mixology? I’m happy to see that sustainability has been a significant factor for quite some time now. At Downtown Camper, it’s something we work with proactively throughout the hotel. In the bars, we have reduced our use of plastics to an absolute minimum, and we use as much seasonal fruits and berries as we possibly can. If the fruit is about to expire, we press out the last juice and preserve it. We then dry the rest of the fruit and use as garniture instead of throwing it in the bin. If there’s anything left that we have to throw away, we have a system that allows us to turn the waste into biofuel. What do people order at this time of year? Stiff and full-flavoured drinks are perfect for the dark ”indoors” season. And a warm drink always does the job. Our signature cocktail, Sveavägen, is back in a new, hot and smokey version: Well-balanced with tasty chocolate and marshmallows of course – it will definitely warm you up. Perfect for sharing in front of the open fire after a day out in the snow. Although I have noticed that people get more and more interested in wine and mixology, many guests still need a little help deciding what to order. An experienced bartender is a good listener and can easily create something based on the guest’s likes and dislikes. Thank you, only one last question! What does a fun night out in Stockholm look like? As always when you visit a new city, it’s essential to have a plan. Nobody wants to be stranded on the street googling places to go last minute, just to find an interesting spot on the opposite side of the city. It’s such a mood killer, and taxis are expensive. You can start easy with some nice drinks in the company of friends at the hotel. Talk to our bartenders; they have loads of great suggestions for clubs in the city. In Stockholm, people go out to party around Midnight. Continue to Häktet or Slakthuset in Södermalm and spark up a conversation with some locals (if you haven’t already). After that, if you are not ready for bed and want to pull an ”all-nighter”, you can continue to Spy Bar - a legendary nightclub located by Stureplan, and open until 5 am.

MENU This is where we gather around the fire to share experiences, stories and to enjoy good food while meeting new and old friends. The meal is the focal point, and in the kitchen we create exciting dishes close to our hearts. We call our cuisine “comfort food from every corner of the world. Food inspired by childhood memories, travelling and the shifting seasons that put a smile on your face and spreads joy, love and comfort. At Campfire, we use the elemental force of fire and extract the flavours of the flames. Here the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversations, laughter and music.

COCKTAIL / MOCKTAIL Sveavägen Hottie

MAINS 155

Talisker 10, green Chartreuse, hot chocolate, cream n’ milk, chocolate bitters, marshmallows Sveavägen is a 2500 meters (8202 ft) long street in central Stockholm. It starts at Sergels Torg and stretches all the way to the Haga Park in the north. It is known for being one of the busiest roads in Sweden, and also where former Prime Minister Olof Palme was assassinated on 28 February 1986.

Mälarhöjden Fizz

Seedlip, lemon, saffron syrup, egg, tonic water (alcohol-free) Mälarhöjden is a residential area south-west of Stockholm, dominated by lake-side villas. In the 1700s, you might have been able to catch a ride to the local inn “Klubben” with singer/songwriter Bellman in his boat. But today, you can easily get there by metro.

Friends will be Friends Have you met Mr Hell yet? Kristian Hell, born Hope, might be half Aussie / half Swede, but he’s 100% fair dinkum happy camper. Downtown Camper’s Lifestyle Concierge has a rare ability to turn strangers into friends. Since the very beginning, he has helped establish the hotel as a home for both local and international guests. Most of the time you can meet this charmer in the lobby of the hotel. For personalised hints and tips - pop by for a chat. Hi mate, two years have passed since Downtown Camper opened. Rear view mirror, what’s your best memory? Good question, I think it would have to be the feeling of watching my colleagues complete the Nordic Islands Adventure Race. Four of our colleagues started the race by repelling down the 30 m high front façade of Downtown Camper – before running, rafting, kayaking, biking and swimming their way the 637 km long course from Stockholm to Turku in Finland. Caroline, Emma, Malin and Natalie will always be an inspiration to me. How does an Australian end up in Stockholm? Many moons ago, I was studying fashion design in Melbourne, Victoria, and also on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. During this period, I was living with two Swedish girls who became like sisters to me. We stayed in touch, and when the time came for me to explore this world, Stockholm was high on my to-see list. Once I arrived, I fell for the city’s efficiency, honesty and cleanliness – and I have been here ever since. What’s your mission as Lifestyle Concierge? My mission is to give our visitors and guests a personalised experience, and ultimately to see them again as friends in the future. The new activities calendar is out in this paper, any specific recommendations? What I’m most excited about is the re-introduction of an activity that contributes to Downtown Camper being an educational hub. Specifically targeting “bleisure” guests (bleisure = merge of business and leisure, Ed.), our new partner, House Of Sparks, will host workshops on the themes Social Sustainability, Power of Perspective, Creative Thinking and Gig Economy. I highly recommend that you book in advance for these sessions, as they are bound to be as popular as they will be rewarding. I know I will be there. And if one has only one day to explore Stockholm...? For the first-timer, it’s important not to overdo it. Pick and choose from any of the following: • A morning walk/bike ride around Skeppsholmen and on to Djurgården before breakfast. • Walk select streets of Östermalm, Gamla Stan and Södermalm. • Stop for a “fika” at Vete-Katten or Pom & Flora. • Visit the Vasa Museum, Nationalmuseum or Fotografiska. • Lunch at Babylon, Indio Kitchen or Downtown Camper Café. • Try the Sound Experience at the hotel for some relaxation. • If you still have the energy, and happen to be here on a Tuesday or Saturday – go for a run with Ssideline City Run Club. • Dinner at Sturehof for classic Swedish cuisine. Campfire or The Flying Elk for local food with a twist. • One last digestive drink at Riche or in The Nest. Thank you, and finally; what is your superpower? (Laughing) If I have a superpower it has to be my ability to connect with people. I have never stopped knocking on doors, and this, in combination with my time at Trädgården (summer nightclub in the area of Södermalm, Ed.) and now here, has resulted in a strong network of friends. And subsequently, having a large network opens new doors - which I guess makes my work at Downtown Camper a lot easier. Photo by Jens Andersson

Below five selected hotspots as marked on the map. You can find all these hotspots and more on our website, on your in-room entertainment system, on Google Maps and the guides are also available as podcasts on iTunes.

1. Hedengrens Bookstore, Book Spot Stureplan 4, Östermalm “At the heart of Östermalm, you’ll find this institution. Established in 1918, it has the look and feel of an old, classic bookstore. The staff are experts, and the selection is large and varied. You can easily end up spending hours here browsing and finding titles you never knew you needed. They offer fiction and non-fiction, magazines, and host a lot of events. If you’re looking for titles in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish and Norwegian, this is the place.” – Johanna Lindbäck, book blogger & writer

2. Grease & Peace, Barber Spot Norra Agnegatan 36, Kungsholmen

1

2

“If you’re looking for the cooler, modern, yet old school look and want to have a real American experience, this barbershop is a good choice. The barbers cut hair in a modern American way.” – Barber Big T, Stockholm-based barber

2

3. Kymlinge Metro Station, Abandoned Spot Sundbyberg “The never-opened subway station in Kymlinge is the subject of an endless amount of urban legends. In reality, the idea was to build an enormous centre for tens of thousands of government bureaucrats here. During the mid-1970s the offices were built in downtown Stockholm instead. The stripped-off subway station is the only remnant of the plans.” – Jan Jörnmark, writer of book ”Abandoned Places”

4. Judits Second Hand, Vintage Spot Hornsgatan 75, Södermalm

4 3

“Where do all the fashion editors and stylists go to hand in their old clothes and bags? The answer is Judits Second Hand - this town’s best ’fine vintage’. If you are looking for a designer bag or a vintage find from a Swedish brand, this is the place to go. Loads of custom made pieces from the past decades. When I was going to a ball in the City Hall, this was where I went to find the dress of my dreams – a long pleated dress from the ’50s in pigeon blue. I will never get rid of it.” – Emma Sundh, vintage blogger & writer

5. Hellasgården, Outdoor Spot Ältavägen 101, Nacka

5

“If you wish to go out with a mountain bike in tricky terrain, discover a historical lake or try the sauna; Hellasgården is perfect for you. Hellasgården is situated in Älta close to the southern parts of Stockholm where you easily can go by bus. The surroundings offer many possibilities for the outdoors geek: A large outside gym, a beautiful lake where you can ice skate in the winter, MTB tracks, running tracks, a restaurant, kiosk and a sauna - all in the beautiful nature reserve of Nackareservatet.” – Erika Rosenbaum, health coach

The Stockholm Survival Guide WINTER EDITION

The cold season in Stockholm can be magical, with crisp air and majestic buildings that stretch towards the clear blue sky. But our cold and dark winter also has its challenges. Here are seven tips for a better winter experience in Stockholm. See you in the snow. Text: Pontus Holmgren Dress warm, from top to toe Occasionally the Stockholm winter can be mild, but eventually, the capital will be struck by that inevitable freeze with snow, icy winds and slippery streets. What to do? Dress for the occasion! Do as the Stockholmers do, tuck yourself into a big, fluffy jacket. Think layers on layers. Put on some long johns, in Sweden known as ‘långkalsonger’. Undergarments made of wool is another must. We apparently leak a lot of body heat from our heads, so the beanie is essential. Many Stockholmers are spotted wearing knitted beanies. Some girls prefer the kind that points straight up. The cool guys choose the ‘sotarmössa,’ a sort of minimal beanie that the city’s hipsters have taken to heart. Warm shoes are perhaps the most essential, preferable boots with a thick rubber sole. In a pair of these, you can battle both snow and ‘slask’ (that is to say the half-melted slush that you’re left with when the snow starts to melt away).

Winter wonder walks and ice skating romance There are days when Stockholm shows its most enchanting self. When the ice lies thick on Riddarfjärden, the house roofs are all covered in snow, and the ice crystals glisten in the treetops. This is the time to head outside. Make sure you plan in some pit stops on your walk. A café, a restaurant and perhaps a museum: cosy spots with good food, warm beverages, and an inspiring culture. Take Strandvägen from Nybroplan towards Djurgårdsbron. Crossing the bridge, on your right-hand side, you’ll find the Nordic Museum. This castle-like building was built between 1889 and 1907 and looks like something out of a fairy tale. The architect was Artur Hazelius (1833–1901), also the man behind Skansen. Are you a hopeless romantic? Then visit the ice skating rink in Kungsträdgården, only a couple of blocks away from Downtown Camper. The city’s best ‘winter-in-Central-Park-experience’. The rink is open every day, and they have ice skates for rent at a small cost.

Experience winter Stockholm from the bike You do know that you can rent bikes from the lobby, right? Don’t let the winter stop you. Stockholm has no less than 2110 km of walkways and bike lanes, and the city works hard to keep them clean and secure all year round. They have to. More and more Stockholmers use their bike to go to work, winter or no winter. And when you head out, avoid dressing too warm on your upper body. You’ll find you heat up quite quickly cycling up and down hilly Stockholm. And make sure you’re visible in the dark. Turn on your head and tail lights as soon as the sun starts to set. Don’t forget the reflectors! In Stockholm, the reflector is currently experiencing an upsurge as a fashion accessory. A Swedish insurance company recently let some Swedish fashion designers, e.g. the ‘enfant terrible’ Ann-Sofie Back and the denim guru Örjan Andersson design cool reflecting creations. When you get off your bike, keep the reflectors on.

The magic of hot chocolate Being outside in the cold takes energy. If you drink something warm, you’ll regain your strength. And your body temperature. And let’s be honest, what’s better than hot chocolate? This is a beverage with which most Swedes have a special relationship. We associate it with childhood adventures. Those cherished moments when thermoses magically appeared out of your parents’ backpack with this steaming hot beverage. Studies also show that hot chocolate is good for you. It’s said to increase the microcirculation in the skin, which helps us keep warm. The chocolate itself triggers the brain to release endorphins which calm us. So when you get back to the hotel from your next excursion in winter Stockholm, stay calm and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate by the fire.

Find the best (and heated) shortcuts Experienced Stockholmers go from A to B without freezing more than necessary. A knowledge that you, for survival purposes, have to acquire after having spent a few freezing winters in the city. You’ll soon learn the shortcuts that minimise time spent outside in the cold, and downtown it’s quite easy to navigate through malls and department stores. Are you going from the central station to Stureplan on a

cold day? Hurry over Sergels Torg into the built-in shopping centre underneath Hamngatan. Then enter the Nordiska Kompaniet department store and make your way to street level. Continue through the PK Huset mall until you reach Norrlandsgatan. Then you’re on your own. You’ll have to walk the last three, four blocks to Stureplan outside. The subway stations also offer heated shortcuts. Find your way crossing the platforms of the underworld, while getting some culture too: the artwork-adorned walls in the subway are well worth a visit on their own. But if you’ve read tip no 1, you can skip straight to no 6.

Take good care of your skin and lips The winter in Stockholm offers no mercy to skin and lips. The contrast between the rough outside cold and the heated indoors will affect your skin. In other words, make sure to rehydrate. Fatty creams prevent dehydration and keep your skin in check. The lips are extra sensitive. They don’t contain as many layers of skin cells as the regular skin and lose moisture up to three times quicker. Hence, the lips need some extra loving care. There are conflicting opinions as to what product to use, but make sure it contains a moisturiser and is based on natural oils and waxes. Soft lips make it easier to talk, make funny faces and last but not least, to kiss.

Learn the importance of ‘mys’ The Danes have their ‘hygge’ and us Swedes we have our ‘mys’. The word roughly translates to the English ‘cosiness’ or ‘snuggle’. The winter is the time of year when Stockholmers appreciate mys the most, especially the weeks leading up to Christmas. Here are some great mys tips: light some candles and put on a pot of coffee or hot chocolate. Or even better: glögg. This warm drink goes best with some saffron buns and gingerbread on the side, which together is the very essence of ‘julmys’. Why not cosy up on the sofa and let yourself be swept away by some Stockholm fiction classics: Jens Lapidus’ hardcore Stockholm Noir trilogy, Bo Widerberg’s film ‘Mannen på Taket’ or ‘Stockholm’, starring Ethan Hawke and Noomi Rapace. The film is about the legendary Norrmalmstorg robbery in 1973, a dramatic event that produced the famous expression ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. Kicking back with a thriller is also known as ‘mysrys’.

”A long, graceful pool flanks one edge of the 9th-floor rooftop bar at this new lifestyle hotel in the Swedish capital. It’s heated, and often the sight of steam rising up from it is dreamy on its own.” Forbes

Winter Nesting The Nest is no ordinary spa. It has been designed to promote your well-being on a 360-degree level. Have a truly Scandinavian experience: Sweat out stress toxins in the sauna, shaped like a giant bird’s nest, and head outside to the heated rooftop pool, overlooking the royal castle, the city hall and the harbour. The Nest is a place to relax, reboot and hang out with friends after a busy, fast-paced day of adventures in the city. On the rooftop of Downtown Camper, you will find The Nest - our urban rooftop retreat. Leave behind the distractions of digital screens and busy traffic, and embrace the vibe while admiring magnificent views of the city. - We want to offer something entirely new: A holistic and modern approach where relaxation, educational practices and well-being all go together. Creativity is essential. Many spas can, at times, feel a bit intimidating. At The Nest, we want to create unpretentious and laid-back wellness in an urban environment. It needs to be accessible and fun, says Malin Lemchen, Wellness Manager at The Nest. Sustainability The guiding thought behind the concept is to encourage an over-all sustainable lifestyle. Today, we live in a digital world where we deal with different, seemingly unnatural stress factors that affect our health and the way we socialise with others. More and more people become aware of the importance of taking better care of themselves, and the holis-

tic wellness discipline recognises that the body, soul and mind are equally important. Massage Why not start your day at The Nest with a classic Swedish massage to get in the right mood? The Nest offers massage focusing on different parts of the body, performed by authorised massage therapists. DIY Treatments The ”do-it-yourself” treatments are sold in the reception at The Nest Wellness. As part of the sustainable concept, they are both educational and fun and allow you to get professional guidance and tips that you can apply to your everyday routine: A few simple steps of lathering, scrubbing, massaging and moisturising let you reconnect your mind and body. Meraki Facial Ritual Don’t miss this fun and social ritual, where our spa therapist guides you in how to take care of your skin. In an educating and rejuvenating session, you are guided step by step in an easy-to-follow ritual that is sure to freshen and brighten up your skin. After the session, you will have the know-how to perform the ritual on yourself at home. The products are provided from Meraki, using only natural ingredients, and you will get a small gift to take home when the session is over. Snacks & Drinks If you get a bit peckish, help yourself to the snacks

and drinks offered inside the wellness area. If you prefer something more invigorating, the wellness staff will take your order: The adjacent cocktail lounge offers beer, wine and bubbles during the day, and delicious cocktails in the evening. House Rules The Nest is our urban retreat and our guests’ refuge from the fast-paced city life; hence, we encourage a mobile-free environment. You are not allowed to make phone calls here, but if you want to take a picture as a memory, you are more than welcome. We love children, but up here, they are not our main focus – we have other facilities where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to hang out, relax and regain energy. Young adults from 16 and up are welcome to visit The Nest. Last but not least: Remember to have fun and to stay curious. Admission Fee Hotel guests - 395 sek External guests - 595 sek We kindly ask you to pre-book your first visit. As a hotel guest, you are then welcome to use the wellness area throughout your stay, upon availability. Towels, bathrobes and slippers are provided in The Nest.
