With A Licence To Grill Explore food, friends and fire at Campfire.

PUSH Urban Skate House Discover Stockholm’s new skateboarding hub.

Nature VS City - Dos & Don’ts Robin Trygg helps you adapt to your new environment.

Think about how much we have and yet how often we long for something different. Consider how much we love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our standard but long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but be able to enjoy nature. To be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpack and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather and discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private but everything at the same time, all the time. We are diverse, curious and exploring ’bon vivants’. To us luxury is never about the surface. It’s about connections and encounters, contrasts and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV to hear new stories, get new impressions – or suddenly find ourselves out of reach, not being online all the time. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that works for both an expedition into the unknown part of the big city and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

With a Licence to Grill Exploring the great indoors, what better place to start than with Campfire, Downtown Camper’s restaurant? A place where locals and travellers come together to share experiences, stories and good food. This well-visited hotspot is gaining recognition as a local social hub to be reckoned with, serving up an eclectic abundance of comfort food from every corner of the world, cooked - and enjoyed - by the spitting flames of the charcoal grill. From early morning to late at night, Campfire is the place to be.

At the peak of urbanisation times, a global trend is gaining momentum. The inspiration for Downtown Camper derived from a ”longing back to the basics” – a trend based on simplicity, togetherness and going back to nature. Imagining a time and place where everything was simple and authentic. Think about it; how do you alter your social conduct when you are walking the streets of the city, compared to hiking a trail in the mountains? Do you say hello to the person you meet on the escalator? Do you spark up a conversation with the person next to you at the bus stop? These notions have been fundamental in the creation of Campfire.

here you get when you are out camping; gathering around the fire, sharing stories, making memories with friends. In the kitchen, we use that charcoal-grilled taste to create unpretentious food with loads of flavour”, explains Claes.

Downtown Camper was recently approved by the Nordic Swan Ecolabel - one of the world’s toughest eco certificates - and working with the environment was always imperative at Campfire: The chefs frequently review their assortment according to current reports on overfishing or reduced demand. Hence, all the fish is MSC labelled and suppliers are selected carefully depending on their sustainability policies. Where possible, “Our vision is to create an open, cosy the kitchen team chooses to work with and warm meeting place for both Stock- local suppliers, and Johan i Hallen – a reholmers and hotel guests, bringing back puted establishment that delivers meat an including, spontaneous and honest to Downtown Camper - is an example social code. PUSH Alexander Lindgren photographed in Gallerian

Urban Skate House

Our new neighbour has made a lasting impression on us. In November last year, a 1600 m² skate centre opened up in Gallerian, just across the square from the hotel. Along with a prime skate bowl and street skating spaces, they offer training, exciting popup shops and music gigs available to the public. We are of course talking about PUSH Urban Skate House - a vibrant meeting place where people of all ages and from all over the world can connect over their shared passion. We met with the founder, Alexander Lindgren, to learn more about their vision to create a safe environment to local kids, whilst helping young people and refugees in other parts of the world. Now this is what we call a friendly neighbour. Hi Alex, tell us, when did the skate culture conquer Sweden? It all started in the 1970s. Towards the end of the summer of 1977, the number of skateboarders in the Stockholm area amounted to 3,000, and the following year the number was 20,000. The interest in the sport saw a growth of exponential proportion - despite the fact that it was banned in most municipalities around Stockholm in the beginning. Downtown Stockholm, just around this area, was the epicentre of the new culture which very soon absorbed an entire generation. Even those who were not so interested in skateboarding from the beginning felt the attraction, because it was on everyone’s lips. What is it about skateboarding that attracts you? I was 11 years old when I came in contact with a skateboard for the first time. The year was 1976, and the experience etched itself into my memory. My friend’s dad had been on a tour in the United States and brought home a board. I still remember it in intricate detail: The smell and the rounding of the wood, and the sound from the wheels as I rolled down the street. It was such an incredible feeling of freedom, almost like I was floating forward. And this area was where it all happened? Exactly, Gallerian was the place where we all gathered. In the evening paper Expressen on March 27, 1978, you could read: ”The environment around Gallerian - the new shopping centre in the middle of Stockholm is made for skateboarding. The kids come here after school; young people from the city and the suburbs.” It was really the epicenter of skateboarding at that time. I think it’s safe to presume that everyone who was born in the 60s and who lived in Stockholm, had a connection to Gallerian. If you look at the picture from the same article in Expressen from 1978, you will see me standing in the middle of the group of kids. At that time, there was no official skating hub in Gallerian. Now,

more than 40 years later, I am so happy that this place finally exists. PUSH was launched in November last year and so far, it’s Sweden’s only skate park located inside a shopping centre. What has been the guiding thought behind the concept? PUSH has been created by the network behind the Swedish innovation company Performance Sk8, and aims to strengthen the self-esteem of children and young people by offering a safe, social hangout where we can meet and share our common interest. I would have loved to have a place like this to go to when I was young. A shared social commitment is the key to this business, and together with our partners, we fill PUSH with fun and innovative activities that make a difference for young people both on-site and around the world. Synergies are incredibly important to us, and as the skate park is located inside a shopping centre, we brought in some likeminded clothing brands that appeal to our target group. Here, shopping is mixed with exciting new experiences. We have had the opportunity to work with fantastic partners. For example: We have chosen to donate a larger part of our profit to Sweden for UNHCR. This partnership means that we can support refugees and people on the run, while also helping young people locally by including them in our skate community and offering a safe environment in the process. Looking forward to the Skateboarding Sessions with Downtown Camper this autumn? Of course! PUSH and Downtown Camper naturally explore and push boundaries and think outside of the box. There is no other partner we would have preferred than Downtown Camper. We share a vision of creating a strong community through new experiences, curiosity and activities. The dynamics that have emerged through our collaboration have proven to benefit both Downtown Camper and our community in a great way. We share the view that the visitors’ needs should always be at core in what we do. As long as we stay true to that dedication, we can give our guests an unrivaled experience. Downtown Camper offers one-hour Skateboarding Sessions at PUSH every Friday at 16.00. Check out all Downtown Camper’s activities - most of which are completely free of charge - in the schedule on the opposite page, and get in touch with our reception if you have any questions.

Nature VS City DOS & DON’TS

When it comes to the great outdoors vs the city, it goes without saying that entirely different codes of conduct apply. Robin Trygg – one of our favourite adventurers / expeditioner and a Stockholm resident – has made a few observations. Here are some helpful dos and don’ts to keep in mind when adapting to your new environment. So you can feel Trygg. Hi or not to hi? Maybe the most important thing to remember: Always say hi to the people you meet on the path/ trail. Should you slip by without a word, people will think you’re a psycho. Funny enough, the exact opposite applies to the city: Sometimes even saying hi to a neighbour is wrong. Awful but true, but I figure there must be a good reason. Here’s my theory; survival of the fittest! If you are living the busy life, always on a deadline, running from A to B, you would probably be at risk being hit by a bus if you don’t watch your step. And there are simply too many people. So play it safe, be cool and keep on walking. What to wear In Sweden, we have a saying: ”Det finns inget dåligt väder bara dåliga kläder”, which roughly translates to ”there’s no bad weather, only bad clothes”. You get our point – keep it practical and useful when packing for the outdoors. Feet are important; make sure you have good footwear and stay dry. Less is not more here, bring colours - you want to be easily spotted in case hunters lurking in the bushes. In the city, everyone’s favourite colour seems to be black. This colour became a big hit a few years back and unfortunately seemed to have stuck with most people. A black t-shirt camouflages you well in town; you’ll blend in with the crowd. So go with black, and you are safe. Topics of conversation Focus on the moment. Talk about the weather, how long you’ve walked, how much berries or

mushrooms you found and rare birds. In the city, we live in the future. If you pass the first awkward phase of getting to know someone here (we’re talking the time with cynicism, scrutinising and finally, awkward conversation getting to know each other), topics of discussion may or may not move to more rewarding topics. You may also find yourself talking about stuff like career, real estate prices, whether you live in a rental or condominium, or why not the new hip bar down on the corner. What to eat While out trekking, remember to travel light. Freeze-dried food might not be the most fun, but it will keep you alive. Spice it up with some spruce shoots or maybe treat yourself to a nettle soup. My tip; use what you have, and get creative (but stay away from pretty, red mushrooms). Staying in the city? Well, maybe your cuisine will not be much different from spruce shoots and nettles. The trend right now is the local produce which you will see if you visit some of the many Michelin-starred restaurants in Stockholm. The most significant difference will be that hole in your wallet.

of backpack or the weather. The longer the hike, the better, and time is no object. Getting to where you need to go in the city can sometimes be a challenge, especially as city people always seem to be short of time. If you can go where ever you need within 30 minutes, consider yourself a winner. Grab an electric scooter, roll down the street on a skateboard or take the tube. Here’s another thing; city people seem to train their entire lives to find the best shortcuts; especially if it’s raining. That new laptop case too heavy to carry? Uber is the way to go. Fitting in People travel from all around to walk the best trails in our vast country. Being genuine is of high value here, so be yourself. It’s as simple as that. And what’s more charming than a regional accent? In the city, what can I say, it’s more about fitting in, and you can’t fit in if you don’t talk like everyone else. So get rid of your accent or don’t - but at your own risk.

Top destinations Most outdoorsy people will track down the most challenging and deserted tracks and enjoy the fresh air in solitude - the longer and trickier the terrain, the better. In the city, you might find yourself looking for the exact opposite: The most popular watering holes, you know, the kind of place you need to visit to prove you are up to date. Stunning views are never wrong though – works for both city people and nature lovers. And let’s be honest, no matter where we go we all like to be able to brag a little to our friends and get that new, cool selfie.

How to stay Trust me, and I know what I’m talking about here – in the wilderness, you choose your basecamp according to the philosophy of ’the rougher, the better,’ and with no roof/tent, you get your million-star hotel in the sky. If you can’t sleep without it being pitch black, Sweden’s outdoors is not for you. The sun comes up around 3 am and goes down as late as 10.30 pm in the summer. Maybe the city is for you then: The basecamp highest on your list, then you’ve come to the right hotel. The trendiest and most centrally located, where you can sleep under a sky of artificial spotlights or block out any trace of light with black-out curtains.

Means of transportation Your legs play a key role in your being able to explore the wilderness. If you got legs, you can walk, run, climb, swim or even crawl through the most challenging stints. No matter your 15 kgs

A Place Called The Nest

The Nest is no ordinary retreat. It has been designed to boost you at a stand-alone level, with a very modern approach to wellbeing - no hushing, no pointing fingers, no fuss. This is a place where you can be yourself and kick back on your own terms while admiring the city from above. Aching limbs after a day of exploring the city? Take the lift to the top and discover The Nest: An urban retreat and a must-see for all guests. Leave behind the distractions of digital screens and busy traffic, embrace the vibe and discover a whole new take on wellness. Step into the sauna, shaped like a bird’s nest. Lather up in the experience showers, then head outside to the pool for a cold drink and some serious chill. Soon you will be ready for another day. Back to basics The ”spa world” can feel a bit intimidating to many of us: “Do this, do that, and keep your voice down”. Basically, very far from how most of us want to retreat, right? The Nest offers a fresh approach to wellness. The guiding thought behind the concept is to encourage a sustainable lifestyle - one that you can keep up with. Today, we live in a digital world where we deal with loads of unnatural stress factors that affect our health and the way we socialise with others. People start to become aware of the importance of taking better care of themselves; to minimise screen time and focus on the meaningful relationships in life. The Nest offers an including, laid-back and utterly stand-alone experience - a new generation of wellness. Do it yourself There are no traditional spa treatments in The Nest. Instead, the offering has been shaped to encompass sustainability, education and long-term wellbeing. Hence, the focus on DIY treatments,

where the idea is to equip you with the know-how to best take care of yourself and your skin - a knowledge that can be applied and used long after you leave the hotel. It only gets better with time Another important thing to remember is that the tempo in The Nest will increase throughout the day. Visit early if you are looking for some peace and quiet. The music plays softer, and there are fewer people in the retreat. As the evening approaches, the music shifts to an ambient pool club vibe as the adjacent cocktail lounge opens. It’s the perfect time and place for an aperitif in the company of good friends. House Rules Welcome to The Nest - a place for new experiences and inspiration. Togetherness, wellbeing and fun is our focus here and hence, we encourage a mobile-free environment. You are not allowed to talk on your phone, but if you want to take a picture as a memory to keep from your visit, you are more than welcome. Discover flavours from around the world on our drinks menu, meet new and old friends, and enjoy great music to magical views from the top of Downtown Camper. Children are amazing, but up here, they are not our primary focus - we have other spaces in the hotel where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to socialise and regain energy.

How to book As a hotel guest, you always have priority in The Nest. The admission fee is 345 sek*, and don’t forget to pre-book your visit. Towels, bathrobes and slippers are provided - just don’t forget your swimsuit. Tel. +46 (0) 8 517 263 09 Or simply dial ”2109” from your in-room telephone. Young adults from 16 and up are welcome to visit The Nest.

”A long, graceful pool flanks one edge of the 9th-floor rooftop bar at this new lifestyle hotel in the Swedish capital. It’s heated, and often the sight of steam rising up from it is dreamy on its own.” Forbes
