The ’X’ in Campfire

Our Restaurant Manager shares her insight.

A View from the Top

Escape the city noise and explore your inner self.

1000 Friends & Counting

Ulf Skarin combines networking with lunch at Campfire.

Think about how much we have and yet how often we long for something different. Consider how much we love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our standard but long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but be able to enjoy nature. To be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpack and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather and discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private but everything at the same time, all the time. We are diverse and curious, exploring ’bon vivants’. To us, luxury is never about the surface. It’s about connections and encounters, contrasts and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV to hear new stories, get new impressions – or suddenly find ourselves out of reach, not being online all the time. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that works for both an expedition into the unknown part of the city and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

Campfire has grown into a destination and a meeting place for locals and travellers alike: Urban explorers and sticklers for grilled food gather in the restaurant to eat, chat and hang out. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but there’s something in the air, something familiar, natural, warm. We met up with the Restaurant Manager, Caroline Peltonen, to have a quick chat about the food and the people, to identify this mysterious “X Factor”. Hi Caroline, would you tell us a little about yourself? Of course. I’ve been in the hospitality industry for more than 20 years, and naturally that wouldn’t be possible without a keen interest in food, beverage and most of all - people. My official title at Downtown Camper is Restaurant Manager, however, I sometimes think of myself as a ”Mood Manager”. Really, tell us more! Well, my job at Campfire is to keep everyone happy. A big part of that is to get my restaurant team to shine, providing the right tools and working conditions for them to be able to deliver the best possible service to our guests. It’s a true skill to be able to make people feel comfortable, and that’s an important key in providing good service to make the guests feel genuinely cared for and welcome.

’ in Campfire What’s it like at Campfire? The atmosphere is laid back and casual, and our guests are a mix of locals from Stockholm and visitors from all over the world, which gives the place an incredible vibe. And the food? The food concept is “comfort food from all corners of the world”, and our kitchen team got their inspiration from everything from childhood memories and travels to new food favourites. You’ll definitely find something on the menu that you can relate to. The food is mostly grilled which is a very healthy way of preparing it, and we serve on sharing plates so that everyone around the table can have a taste. Then there’s a big focus on sustainability here. We try to work with the environment instead of against it: Seasonal food and ingredients from trusted suppliers, and we climate compensate for all the meat we buy. We also work proactively to reduce food waste and all the food waste is subsequently turned into biofuel. That’s awesome. So finally, what’s the thing with Campfire? This place is full of life. When I walked in for the first time, I was seduced; there’s always something happening here and the vibe is exciting yet inclusive: I feel like this is a place where you can be yourself. The X factor, in my opinion, is similar to the feeling you get out in nature - you feel relaxed as if you’re a part of everything, and it all just makes sense.

MENU This is where we gather around the fire to share experiences, stories and to enjoy good food while meeting new and old friends. The meal is the focal point and in the kitchen we create exciting dishes close to our hearts. We call our cuisine “comfort food from every corner of the world. Food inspired by childhood memories, travelling and the shifting seasons that put a smile on your face and spreads joy, love and comfort. At Campfire we use the elemental force of fire and extract the flavours of the flames. Here the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversations, laughter and music.

Seedlip, cucumber, basil, lime, ginger beer (alcohol-free) Mälarhöjden is a residential area south-west of Stockholm, dominated by lake-side villas. In the 1700s, you might have been able to catch a ride to the local inn “Klubben” with singer / songwriter Bellman in his boat. But today, you can easily get there by metro.

1000 Friends & Counting You might have seen him around. The man arriving on a longboard, Ulf Skarin, is possibly one of Downtown Camper’s most loyal lunch guests. The former Editor in Chief of Veckans Affärer and one of Sweden’s most experienced business journalists, has been running the concept of ”Ulf’s Lunch” for almost four years: Every day he meets a new, idea-driven person of the business world for lunch, and these meetings give him a unique insight into different industries. The people, the companies, the ideas and the trends. Soon reaching 1000 lunches, Ulf could very well be Sweden’s best networker. Hi there Ulf, tell us about your lunches! The idea came to me when I took over at Veckans Affärer about seven years ago. I wanted to find a simple and unforced way to meet readers, get feedback and new ideas. As soon as the framework for this new concept was planned out, I started having my lunch every day with a new person. I soon realized how incredibly valuable and inspiring these meetings were. So Ulf’s Lunch then became a regular thing. For the past few years now I have been hosting my lunch from Downtown Camper and I think it’s a perfectly inspiring co-working environment and an exciting meeting point for all kinds of people. Can you describe your typical lunch date? I try to meet a wide spectrum of people, to try to broaden and diversify my own circle and perspective. Meeting different personalities who can offer another point of view and insight into fields that are for me unexplored, is one of the most vital parts of this project. But most of them are entrepreneurs with a specific interest or passion. A clear trend in recent years is a strong connection between business and personal values. Today, in addition to making money, entrepreneurship has become an effective tool for creating a change in our society. Cool. So, what do you wish to achieve? I want to highlight brilliant and innovative ideas. There are so many committed and smart people out there who deserve more attention, but it’s also about connecting people. As an example, two of my lunch dates found a collaboration through my concept, and today they run a successful startup together. And I never tire of listening to different people’s personal driving forces. It always makes for exciting conversations based on passion and commitment. And what about your own personal driving force? Ulf’s Lunch is a great source of inspiration for me. Through all these meetings, I acquire loads of new knowledge into areas I previously knew nothing about: Input and ideas that I can then utilize in my journalistic work. Diving into another person’s field of interest and seeing things from their perspective is completely addictive - I simply can’t stop. Try for yourself, and you’ll see.

Sure will, thanks! Any final tips? My advice is to stay constantly curious. Others may use their lunch break to try to stay in shape and visit the gym. The lunches are my way of keeping my mind in shape. By having lunch with a person you’ve never met before, you train your ”super powers” in a fast-changing world: You learn how to listen, share ideas, take on other people’s perspectives, and you build new personal relationships. I recommend everyone to have lunch regularly with perfect strangers. There are so many exciting new people to meet and ideas to share, and that’s how we can build a better community.

Hi and welcome to my hometown, Stockholm. I’m Sotarn, a photographer and DJ, and I shot most of the pictures in this paper. I also want to share with you some of my favourite places around the city, as marked on the map on the previous page. It’s a selection of cool hangouts and must-sees while visiting Stockholm. Enjoy and don’t hesitate to say hi if you see me around.

Fotografiska 1 Stadsgårdshamnen 22, Södermalm “Probably one of the best museums of photography in the world, ”Fotografiska” located by the water in Stadsgårdshamnen is well worth a visit. Except for world-class photo exhibitions they also have occasional live music, clubs and a first-class restaurant in the building.”

2

Ivar Los Park Bastugatan 26, Södermalm

“This little park, with a beautiful view over the water of Riddarfjärden and downtown Stockholm, is perfect for a romantic picnic. Stay until sunset.”

Under Bron 3 Hammarby Slussväg 2, Södermalm “Under Bron, hidden under the Skanstull bridge, is one of Sweden’s best (according to me) night clubs. Come early for some people watching and cultural events, stay late for great music and an epic dance floor.”

4

Humana Second Hand Timmermansgatan 23, Södermalm

“Might not look like much on the outside, but inside you will find the best selected vintage clothing. Really nice and helpful staff as well.”

5

Downtown Camper’s Café & Community Drottninggatan 28, City Centre

“I am really curious about trying Downtown Camper’s new vegetarian café on Drottninggatan this autumn. It might just be the place to be seen this season.”

Discover the Downtown Hotspots, Downtown Camper’s very own Stockholm guide. The locals take you behind the scenes, share their personal hotspots and tell you, in their own words, why each place is worth a visit. You can find all the Downtown Hotspots on our website, on your in-room entertainment system and on Google Maps. The guides are also available as podcasts on iTunes.

The Stockholm Survival Guide AUTUMN EDITION

Stockholm, like any other city, has its peculiarities. As a visitor it’s sometimes easy to feel a little out of place. How do you walk? How do you talk? How do you find your way? Here are seven tips that will help you get into the game quicker. So relax, soon you’ll blend in like a local. “Hej!” Stockholmers are social creatures that love to hang out with friends, but when meeting new people they can be a bit reserved at first. The opposite to people from Gothenburg who happily greet everyone, but for the people of Stockholm a silent nod is sometimes about all you get. They’ll play it cool. After all, they are from the big city and not the countryside. If you are to greet a local say “Hej” (Hello) or try one of the slang versions “Tjena” or “Tja” (similar to “Hey” or “Yo”). That will surely break the ice and you’ll get a “Hej” and a smile in return. Do as the pigeons of Farsta (a borough south of town) do: take the subway. Over 60 different species of birds can be found in central Stockholm. One of the more commonly occurring species is the wood pigeon that, like the Stockholmer, is a social and faithful bird that often mates for life. And like every big city, you’ll also spot city pigeons here. In Stockholm, some of the more developed specimens have taken their urban bird life to a whole new level. They have started riding the subway! The so called Farsta Pigeons can be seen getting on the train at the station of Hökarängen and getting off at Farsta Centrum, two of the stations on the green subway line that are above ground. The birds have learned that the subway will automatically take them to new places where they can find food. So, if you are in a hurry to get from A to B, do like the Farsta Pigeons and take the subway. Don’t hesitate – just keep walking! Stockholmers consider themselves early adopters. They quickly absorb the latest and greatest trends and pay no attention to the fact that they live in a cold distant corner of northern Europe. Instead

they act like they live in Manhattan but they never seem to be able to master all the codes of metropolitan living. Like how you pass a person on the sidewalk without bumping into them. In the big cities like New York and London you rarely see any collisions between two pedestrians, but in Stockholm they get caught in an awkward rocking back and forth situation surprisingly often, where as one person moves to the right, the other moves to the left and so on until one person is able to break the spell and continue walking. So, if you find yourself on a collision course with someone while strolling in the city, don’t hesitate, just keep on walking. Orientate yourself. 365 steps up. When you arrive in Stockholm it can be hard to find your way. The city is surrounded by water and the neighbourhoods are spread out over different islands. To get a good overview, head to one of the city’s vantage points. On the heights of Södermalm there are several great places to admire the cityscape from, like Mariaberget, Fjällgatan and Katarinavägen. The most central vantage point can be found in the tower of Stockholm’s city hall, designed by the tenacious architect Ragnar Östberg and inaugurated in 1923. The tower is 106 meters tall and the stairs to the top consists of 365 steps. From the top you can enjoy a 360 degree view of Stockholm. Admission is 50 SEK per person. Up and down on a bike. Every day around 100 000 of the city’s inhabitants get on their bikes to get to and from work, and in rush traffic they move fast. Fastest of them all are the bike couriers and “mamils” (middle-aged men in lycra), and in places like Götgatsbacken by Slussen you have to pay extra attention. Exploring the city by bike has its advantages, though. You get to experience the street life, architecture, enjoy amazing views and all the lush and green open areas with all your senses. You can also move around quickly and even reach destinations outside the city in no time. But be prepared for all the hills. Compared to other bike-friendly cities

Stockholm is extremely hilly with steep cliffs and bridges and sometimes you really need to make an effort to reach your destination. But that doesn’t stop locals from riding their bikes. So if you really want to blend in, do as the locals do and take the bike. You can also rent a bike at the hotel’s front desk. But don’t forget the helmet. Cards Only. In a couple of years when the hipster scene in Stockholm has evolved even further, cash will probably be cool again. The beard-cladded men that today can be seen brewing IPAs will probably start forging their very own silver coins by then. But in autumn 2019 your credit card is still king as more and more places only accept cards. The coolest and simplest method of payment is called Swish, a Swedish payment app. Unfortunately you need a bank account in Sweden to use it. Sorry. The weather, Slussen and Zlatan. What topics of conversation are suitable to have with locals? The weather is always a safe bet. Life in the city follows the shifting seasons and there is always a phrase that will fit the current forecast. “How wonderful to see the sun!” and “We have longed for this rain” or “Been a long time since we saw this much snow”. If you are in the neighbourhood Södermalm ask “How is Bajen doing?”. That’s the nickname for the local football team Hammarby. In the same area you’ll be very likely to find a hipster who loves to talk about locally brewed beer, sneakers and beard grooming. But if you really want to get the conversation going with a local, ask them about Slussen, the hub that connects Södermalm and the Old City. It has been under construction for the last couple of years, and everyone, and we mean absolutely everyone, has an opinion about the project. Ironically, no one seems to know when it will be finished. If all else fails you can always say something about Zlatan.

The Nest is no ordinary spa. It has been designed to promote your well-being on a 360-degree level. Have a truly Scandinavian experience: Sweat out your stress toxins in the sauna, shaped like a giant bird’s nest, and head outside to the rooftop pool, overlooking the royal castle, the city hall and the harbour. The Nest Wellness is a place to relax, reboot and hang out with friends after a busy, fast-paced day of adventures in the city. On the rooftop of Downtown Camper, you will find The Nest Wellness. Up here, the air is clear and the city noise dissolves. Leave behind the distractions of digital screens and busy traffic, and feel the vibe while admiring the magnificent view of the city. - We want to offer something entirely new. A holistic and modern approach where exercise, relaxation, educational practices and well-being all go together. Creativity is essential: Many spas can feel a bit intimidating and formal, but we want to create unpretentious and laid-back wellness in an urban environment. It needs to be both accessible and fun, says Malin Lemchen, Wellness Manager at The Nest. Sustainability The guiding thought behind the concept in The Nest is to encourage a more sustainable lifestyle. Today, we live in a digital world where we deal with different, seemingly unnatural stress factors that affect our health and the way we socialise with others. Your inside and outside are connected,

and the holistic wellness discipline recognises that the body and soul are equally important. Massage Why not start your day at The Nest with a classic Swedish massage to get in the right mood? The Nest offers massage focusing on different parts of the body, performed by authorised massage therapists. DIY Treatments The ”do-it-yourself” treatments are sold in the reception at The Nest Wellness. As part of the sustainable concept, they are both educational and fun and allow you to get professional guidance and tips that you can apply to your everyday routine: A few simple steps of lathering, scrubbing, massaging and moisturising let you reconnect your mind and body. Meraki Facial Ritual Don’t miss this, fun and social ritual, where our spa therapist guides you in how to take care of your skin. In this educating and rejuvenating session, you are guided step by step in an easy-to-follow ritual that is sure to freshen and brighten up your skin. After the session, you will have the know-how to perform the ritual on yourself. The products are provided from Meraki, and you will get a small gift to take home. Snacks & Drinks If you get a bit peckish, help yourself to the dried and fresh fruit, pickles, olives and tea, offered

inside the wellness area. If you prefer something stronger and more invigorating, the wellness staff will take your order: The adjacent lounge offers beer, wine and bubbles during the day, and delicious cocktails in the evening. House Rules The Nest is our urban retreat and our guests’ refuge from the fast-paced city life, hence we encourage a mobile-free environment. You are not allowed to make phone calls here, but if you want to take a picture as a memory, you are more than welcome. We love children but up here they are not our main focus – we have other facilities where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to hang out, relax and regain energy. Young adults from 16 and up are welcome to visit The Nest. Last but not least: Remember to have fun and to stay curious.

Admission fee Hotel guests - 395 sek External guests - 595 sek We ask all our guests to pre-book their first visit. As a hotel guest, you are then welcome to use the wellness area throughout your stay, upon availability. Towels, bathrobes and slippers are provided. The bathrobe and slippers are yours to take home.
