Meet Chris from Urskog Longboards.

The ’X’ in Campfire

Our Restaurant Manager shares her insight.

Urban Rooftop Retreat

Escape the city noise and explore your inner self.

Think about how much we have and yet how often we long for something different. Consider how much we love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our standard but long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but be able to enjoy nature. To be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpack and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather and discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private but everything at the same time, all the time. We are diverse and curious, exploring ’bon vivants’. To us, luxury is never about the surface. It’s about connections and encounters, contrasts and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV to hear new stories, get new impressions – or suddenly find ourselves out of reach, not being online all the time. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that works for both an expedition into the unknown part of the city and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

The ’

Campfire has grown into a destination and a meeting place for locals and travellers alike: Urban explorers and sticklers for grilled food gather in the restaurant to eat, chat and hang out. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but there’s something in the air, something familiar, natural, warm. We met up with the Restaurant Manager, Caroline Peltonen, to have a quick chat about the food and the people, to identify this mysterious “X Factor”. Hi Caroline, would you tell us a little about yourself? Of course. I’ve been in the hospitality industry for more than 20 years, and naturally that wouldn’t be possible without a keen interest in food, beverage and most of all - people. My official title at Downtown Camper is Restaurant Manager, however, I sometimes think of myself as a ”Mood Manager”. Really, tell us more! Well, my job at Campfire is to keep everyone happy. A big part of that is to get my restaurant team to shine, providing the right tools and working conditions for them to be able to deliver the best possible service to our guests. It’s a true skill to be able to make people feel comfortable, and that’s an important key in providing good service to make the guests feel genuinely cared for and welcome. What’s it like at Campfire? The atmosphere is laid back and casual, and our guests are a mix of locals from Stockholm and visitors from all over the world, which gives the place an incredible vibe.

’ in Campfire Photos by Sotarn

And the food? The food concept is “comfort food from all corners of the world”, and our kitchen team got their inspiration from everything from childhood memories and travels to new food favourites. You’ll definitely find something on the menu that you can relate to. The food is mostly grilled which is a very healthy way of preparing it, and we serve on sharing plates so that everyone around the table can have a taste. We try to work with the environment instead of against it: Seasonal food and ingredients, and we climate compensate for all the meat we buy. We also work proactively to reduce food waste and all the food waste is subsequently turned into biofuel. What’s going on at Campfire this summer? If you are visiting us this summer, you’re in for a treat. Prepare yourself for loads of grilled food, gorgeous summer drinks and great music. We will be offering our guests a “Grill & Mix” dinner, inspired by those lovely summer BBQs enjoyed with friends in someone’s backyard. There is an array of lovely salads, fresh potatoes, grilled meats, and desserts. In brief; our idea of the perfect summer night. Sounds delicious. So finally, what’s the thing with Campfire? This place is full of life. When I walked in for the first time, I was seduced; there’s always something happening here and the vibe is exciting yet inclusive: I feel like this is a place where you can be yourself. The X factor, in my opinion, is similar to the feeling you get out in nature - you feel relaxed as if you’re a part of everything, and it all just makes sense.

MENU This is where we gather around the fire to share experiences, stories and to enjoy good food while meeting new and old friends. The meal is the focal point and in the kitchen we create exciting dishes close to our hearts. We call our cuisine “comfort food from every corner of the world. Food inspired by childhood memories, travelling and the shifting seasons that put a smile on your face and spreads joy, love and comfort. At Campfire we use the elemental force of fire and extract the flavours of the flames. Here the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversations, laughter and music.

Return to Wood Photos by Sotarn

Christoffer Stivén, the founder of Urskog Longboards, took his dream of riding the waves to dry land. Crafting skate and longboards with respect for the environment and using only the natural beauty of Nordic wood, Urskog has brought sustainability and craftmanship into the hard-to-impress skating culture. In his hands, wood gets a comeback on the streets and its individuality shines through in every board, making each one truly unique. Hi there Chris, tell us about Urskog! Urskog is a Swedish riding concept returning to one of our oldest materials, wood. Quality is essential in every board and in everything we do, and we work to infuse sustainable thinking into the skateboard industry and in consumption in general. Today, our boards are sold worldwide, and it is within this category that the majority of our time is devoted, although today, we build everything from bicycle details to furniture and event installations. How did it all start? To make a long story short: I initially wanted to go surfing in Stockholm. It turned out to be quite difficult and time-consuming as the conditions of this location aren’t the best. So I eventually gave up on the idea and decided to take the surf to the streets instead. 15 years ago, I built my first longboard made out of wood. I worked hard on it and used it diligently, skating around the city. As I got to know some skaters, they asked if I could make boards for them as well, and that’s how I got my first orders. What motivates you? I love hard work. I want to feel that I am constantly moving. It is great fun to have the opportunity to work as broadly as I do today; developing the concept to include other fields, than solely boards. And to promote sustainable thinking and the incredible material that wood is, in other industries as well. What Urskog really is, is a concept; an idea that anything is possible, and that just about anything could be crafted out of wood. I am, however, far from satisfied and constantly working to develop our environmental thinking further. Unfortunately, it has proven difficult to replace the boards’ wheels with wood, but this is something we have worked on a lot and I am convinced that one day, the whole thing is going to be bio-degradable. What makes Urskog unique? We distinguish ourselves as we choose to emphasize wood and the beautiful structure that exists in this material, instead of working with graphics or the like, which many other manufacturers do. Sustainability and quality mean everything to us and we never compromise on that. Urskog’s boards are glued with white glue, lacquered with water-based varnish. The boards are made of Nordic birch, clad with organic veneers and pressed exclusively in Sweden, single press [pressed one at a time, Ed]. In my opinion, there are few brands that can compete with us on quality. The boards have so much manual labour put into them, that there is no room for releasing a badlycomposed board. What’s your connection to Downtown Camper? I was asked to do something interesting for the hotel’s lobby, so I designed a simplified production history of Urskog’s boards which hangs in the entrance today. In addition to this, DC bought some boards to let the hotel guests experience the city in a new way which according to me is an absolutely brilliant idea. We have also worked together on various wood-related products and sitespecific joinery works, which has been a lot of fun. Where can one find Urskog? Our workshop is located in Hägersten, south of Stockholm, but our boards are also available online. Most major Swedish board vendors sell a selection of our boards, including Downtown Camper’s webshop at shopdc.se. Thanks, Chris. Any favourite skate spots in Stockholm? I would really recommend everyone to grab a board and head down to Norr Mälarstrand to enjoy an ice cream in good company on any given sunny day.

Hi and welcome to my hometown, Stockholm. I’m Sotarn, a photographer and DJ, and I shot all of the pictures in this paper. I also want to share with you some of my favourite places around the city, as marked on the map on the previous page. It’s a selection of cool hangouts and must-sees while visiting Stockholm. Enjoy and don’t hesitate to say hi if you see me somewhere this summer.

Trädgården 3 Hammarby Slussväg 2, Södermalm “Trädgården, hidden under the Skanstull bridge, is Sweden’s largest (and best, according to me) night club. Open during summer from the beginning of May, this huge adult playground is a place where you want to be. Come early for some people watching and table tennis, stay late for an epic dance floor, both outside and inside.”

Fotografiska 1 Stadsgårdshamnen 22, Södermalm “Probably one of the best museums of photography in the world, ”Fotografiska” located by the water in Stadsgårdshamnen is well worth a visit. Except for world-class photo exhibitions they also have occasional live music, clubs and a first-class restaurant in the building.”

2

Ivar Los Park Bastugatan 26, Södermalm

“This little park, with a beautiful view over the water of Riddarfjärden and downtown Stockholm, is perfect for a romantic picnic. Stay until sunset.”

4

Humana Second Hand Timmermansgatan 23, Södermalm

“Might not look like much on the outside, but inside you will find the best selected vintage clothing. Really nice and helpful staff as well.”

5

Indian Street Food Drottninggatan 73 B, City Centre

“Fancy a quick, yet delicious lunch? Indian Street Food serves various Indian dishes at a fair price.”

Discover the Downtown Hotspots, Downtown Camper’s very own Stockholm guide. The locals take you behind the scenes, share their personal hotspots and tell you, in their own words, why each place is worth a visit. You can find all the Downtown Hotspots on our website, on your in-room entertainment system and on Google Maps. The guides are also available as podcasts on iTunes.

The Stockholm Survival Guide SUMMER EDITION

Oh, summer in Stockholm. This is when you notice a slow transition of colour creeping back into peoples wardrobes, the spring in everyone’s step, possibly the odd smile from a stranger and the introduction of “AW” (afterwork). Yes, the Swedish dark depression has lifted, welcome to Summer in Stockholm. New to Sweden? Here are some noteworthy tips to get you safely through these glorious sunny months.

Swedish Tradition #1 - Midsummer Swedes are sticklers for certain traditions. Midsummer, more prominent than Christmas, is celebrated this year on June 22nd. Most people head out of the city to their summer houses. God forbid, should you be left behind in town. If you’ve never experienced Midsummer, you’re in for a treat. First of all, and a bit confusing; Swedes don’t celebrate on Midsummer’s Day, they’re far too impatient for that, no they celebrate on Midsummer’s Eve. Secondly, you’re going to experience some of the weirdest dancing you have ever come across, think frogs crossed with pigs and the hokey cokey, while dancing around a fertility pole, with flowers around your head. If you’re lucky, Sweden’s Eurovision finalist is singing, more likely though is a villager with a voice like a strangled cat. If you make it through this, then thirdly, you’ll get to feast on ‘sill’ (pickled herring), washed down with a selection of ‘nubbe’. Nubbe could to a foreigner only be described as paint stripper flavoured with herbs. Enjoy! Allemansrätten The freedom to roam, or ”everyman’s right”, is the general public’s right to access certain public or privately-owned land for recreation, adventure and exercise. The Swedes exercise this general human right to its maximum; enjoying the freedom to roam in the Swedish mountains, coastlines and archipelago. There are some important dos and don’ts to bear in mind before venturing out into the wilderness. You can camp, walk, kayak, cycle, swim and hike on almost any land except private gardens, near a dwelling or land under cultivation. Just remember to take good care of nature and respect wildlife. Show consideration towards the landowners and others enjoying the countryside. In short, don’t disturb, litter or destroy.

Getting Around Stockholm has an excellent transport system consisting of trains, tubes, trams, buses and boats, which are nearly all covered by your SL card. Some of the boats are privately owned and charge a small fee to take you from A to B but it’s well worth it. If public transport doesn’t float your boat, then why not grab a bike from the hotel and head out along the many cycle paths that cover the city. If you’re feeling adventurous, then you could try your hand at kayaking. Be extra mindful on the roads during student examination season. Large trucks travel around the city, loaded with partying kids celebrating the end of high school. Bathing Spots An abundance of water surrounds the many islands that make up this fabulous city. There is an excellent selection of sunbathing and swimming spots to choose from, and the fantastic news is they’re all on our doorstep. Tantolunden is a favourite spot for all those alternative Stockholmers; located in the southern part of town in Södermalm. Here you can enjoy the sauna if you wish, and it’s a perfect spot for a BBQ or a picnic. Another great place is Långholmsbadet located on Långholmen. Opposite, on the neighbouring island, you have Smedsuddsbadet, at Rålambshov Park Beach which is popular with families. For those of you slightly more adventurous, we can highly recommend Hellasgården. This natural beauty is just 20 minutes from Slussen and is home to a large freshwater lake and beautiful forests to hike, bike or walk around. Swedish Tradition #2 - Crayfish Parties Another fun and crazy holiday tradition is the Crayfish Party, which can be held anytime from August to September. This tradition’s origins go back to the early 1900s when fishing restrictions were put in place to reduce overfishing. Top tips for a Crayfish party: load up on cheese pie, potato salad and any other stomach-filling food. Those crayfish are not going to line your stomach sufficiently for all the (once again) nubbe you’re likely to be drinking, after each silly drinking song. If you’re lucky, your host will have printed off phonetical song sheets for you, if not, we suggest mumbling the same tune everyone else is singing, looking enthusiastic, and

whatever you do, don’t say ‘cheers’. In Sweden, we do the awkward stare off and then take our shot in half. Always half. One other important note to mention is that slurping is an absolute must. If you leave the legs of the crayfish without first slurping all the juice from them, you will get funny looks. Lastly, shower as soon as you get back, you will be smelling like a giant walking crayfish for days to come, along with everything you were wearing. Swedish Summer Weather Sweden isn’t guaranteed good weather all summer long, believe it or not. But for those inevitable rainy days, there are great places to visit. Fotografiska, located in the heart of Stockholm on Södermalm, is an international meeting place where everything revolves around photography. The museum features four major exhibitions per year and approximately 15-20 minor ones. The restaurant is well worth a visit, offering panoramic views of Stockholm. The Vasa Museum offers a unique experience to see the only, almost fully intact, 17th century ship, ever to be salvaged. Embarrassingly for the King of Sweden who had commissioned Vasa, it sank within minutes of its maiden voyage in 1628. Lovingly restored over the years, just recently all the bolts were removed and replaced with new versions, lightening it by eight tons. Party Like it’s 1989 Stockholm comes into its own when the sun comes out, and there’s no better place to party than at Trädgården. A unique, festival-like club located under the Skanstull bridge in Södermalm. This outdoor club is a psychedelic explosion of colour and crazy music. Arrive early to avoid the queues (or even better, get yourself on the guest list). Dance, watch live performances, try some table tennis or pétanque. If you get a bit peckish, there’s a selection of things to eat. Another chance to party is offered by Mr French, which has definitely placed its name firmly on the map, described as one of the hottest day parties in Stockholm. You’ll be dancing to saxophonists, bongo drummers and performances while sipping on cool drinks and laughing with old and new friends. Yes, you get our point; the summer is the season to party in Stockholm. Text by Rebecca Knutsson

The Urban Rooftop Retreat Photos by Sotarn

The Nest is no ordinary spa. It has been designed to promote your well-being on a 360-degree level. Have a truly Scandinavian experience: Sweat out your stress toxins in the sauna, shaped like a giant bird’s nest, and head outside to the rooftop pool, overlooking the royal castle, the city hall and the harbour. The Nest Wellness is a place to hang out, relax and unwind with friends after a busy, fast-paced day of adventures in the city. On the rooftop of Downtown Camper, you will find The Nest Wellness. Up here, the air is clear and the city noise dissolves. Leave behind the distractions of digital screens and busy traffic, and feel the vibe while admiring the magnificent view of the city. - We want to offer something entirely new. A holistic and modern approach where exercise, relaxation, educational practices and well-being all go together. Creativity is essential: Many spas can feel a bit intimidating and formal, but we want to create unpretentious and laid-back wellness in an urban environment. It needs to be both accessible and fun, says Malin Lemchen, Wellness Manager at The Nest. Sustainability The guiding thought behind the concept in The Nest is to encourage a more sustainable lifestyle. Today, we live in a digital world where we deal with different, seemingly unnatural stress factors that affect our health and the way we socialise with others. The inside and the outside are connected,

and the holistic wellness discipline recognises that the body and soul are equally important. Massage Why not start your day at The Nest with a classic Swedish massage to get in the right mood? The Nest offers massage focusing on different parts of the body, performed by authorised massage therapists. DIY Treatments The ”do-it-yourself” treatments are sold in the reception at The Nest Wellness. As part of the sustainable concept, they are both educational and fun and allow you to get professional guidance and tips that you can apply to your everyday routine: A few simple steps of lathering, scrubbing, massaging and moisturising let you reconnect your mind and body. Meraki Facial Ritual Don’t miss this new, fun and social ritual, where our spa therapist guides you in how to take care of your skin. In this educating and rejuvenating session, you are guided step by step in an easyto-follow ritual that is sure to freshen and brighten up your skin. After the session, you will have the know-how to perform the ritual on yourself. The products are provided from Meraki, and you will get a small gift to take home. Snacks & Drinks If you get a bit peckish, help yourself to the dried and fresh fruit, pickles, olives and tea, offered

inside the wellness area. If you prefer something stronger and more invigorating, the wellness staff will take your order: The adjacent lounge offers beer, wine and bubbles during the day, and delicious cocktails in the evening. House Rules The Nest is our urban retreat and our guests’ refuge from the fast-paced city life, hence we encourage a mobile-free environment. You are not allowed to make phone calls here, but if you want to take a picture as a memory, you are more than welcome. We love children but up here they are not our main focus – we have other facilities where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to hang out, relax and regain energy. Young adults from 16 and up are welcome to visit The Nest. Last but not least: Remember to have fun and to stay curious.

Admission fee Hotel guests - 395 sek External guests - 595 sek We ask all our guests to pre-book their first visit. As a hotel guest, you are then welcome to use the wellness area throughout your stay, upon availability. Towels, bathrobes and slippers are provided. The bathrobe and slippers are yours to take home.
