In Good Company Tête à tête with Laura from Campfire.

The Voice of Adventure

Husky Podcast in an exclusive interview.

Time for Chill Take a flight to The Nest.

Get by with a little help from our friends

Think about how much we have and yet how often we long for something different. Consider how much we love feeling safe yet yearn for new challenges. We raise our standard but long for the fundamental, the basic. We want to live in the city but be able to enjoy nature. To be able to pack only the most essential, put on our backpack and just leave. We want to improvise and create, seize the day, adjust to the wind and weather and discover new paths in the forest and new streets in the city. We are not only professional or private but everything at the same time, all the time. We are diverse, curious and exploring ’bon vivants’. To us luxury is never about the surface. It’s about connections and encounters, contrasts and inspiration. It’s having the opportunity to gather around the campfire instead of the TV to hear new stories, get new impressions – or suddenly find ourselves out of reach, not being online all the time. Luxury to us is doing something good for other people, and to feel good about ourselves, from the inside. So, put on your backpack and a pair of shoes that works for both an expedition into the unknown part of the big city and for the party tonight. Let us show you where the adventure begins – right here in the heart of the city.

In Good Company Photographers: Sofia Lindblom, Robin Hayes

Campfire is often described as a warm, cosy and including place. When you meet Laura, you get why. Downtown Camper’s restaurant is a busy place: Breakfast for hungry hotel guests during the early hours, lunch for the local business crowd, and dinner where the hip locals intermingle with international guests. With creativity, grit and humbling positivity, Laura runs the daily operations during breakfast and lunch, ensuring all varying expectations are being met. Meet Laura and her army of service soldiers. Hi Laura! How did you end up at Campfire? After almost 12 years in the hospitality industry, running operations at several cafés, restaurants and big music events, I was curious about working in a hotel. A friend told me about Downtown Camper, and it was the fun and playful theme that attracted me the most. I have been working here for almost two years now - and it’s still the most fun job I’ve ever had. Tell us a little about the team? We are a diverse and international group of all ages. What I’ve learned from experience, is that even though times are busy, it’s important to be kind, to coach each other - and to have a good laugh once in a while. To have a strong staff culture where everyone is included is absolutely vital in such a large group. And I see evidence of that every day here. As an example, the other day my colleague Luna came in earlier than the rest of us and prepared the restaurant, so that we all could enjoy a proper breakfast together, before the guests arrived. Small things like that make a big difference to the team spirit. What’s it like, working here? We have different teams working throughout the day, both in the kitchen and in the restaurant. My colleague Caroline, the Restaurant Manager who manages operations during dinner, and I work very close together to make sure the quality of service remains consistent. And I learn something new every day because ironically - no day is like any other in this hotel. Working close to the guests, talking to them and hearing about their experiences in Stockholm, gives me a great deal of energy. In addition, we get to serve them gorgeous food in all its simplicity, and it makes me proud to be a part of Campfire and the team working here.

What kind of food do you serve in Campfire? We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner in Campfire, and brunch on Sundays. The concept is grilled comfort food with a strong sustainability focus, and the inspiration comes from all corners of the world. During the dinner, Campfire gets frequented by a local crowd, and I believe there’s something for everyone on the menu: Everything from spicy fish tacos and burgers to purely plant-based food. For environmental reasons, most of the dishes are lactose-free and can be made vegetarian and vegan. We see an increase in special dietary requests, so it’s very helpful for us in the restaurant, that the kitchen team is proactive in meeting these needs. In the kitchen, we use a lot of organic products. There’s no bottled water in Campfire, we filtrate the tap water, because why would anyone from Sweden use bottled water when we’ve got some of the best water in the world? The majority of the food options available during breakfast, lunch and brunch are vegan with the option to add protein, and we CO2 compensate for all the meat we buy. In addition, all the food waste is transformed into biofuel. And what about Sunday Brunch & Games? On Sundays, most people want to hang out with friends and family and have a laid-back, cosy and relaxed time over a proper meal. We want to create a Sunday hangout that taps into that, giving our guests a feeling of comfort and togetherness, where it’s easy to meet new friends. On every table in the restaurant, we place out board games. The idea is to encourage a kind of outdoor spirit and openness. Just think about it; if you meet someone on the walking trail in the mountains, you say “hi” and stop for a quick chat - it’s the most natural thing. But would you apply the same cordiality when you pass someone in the street? We find that social activities like board games make people more relaxed and open to new aquaintances. Why do the guests come back to Campfire? There’s no shortcut to giving good service: By genuinely caring for our guests, we make them feel genuinely welcome. I tell my team to be themselves, caring, and to have fun. I think that’s why our guests keep coming back – not only for the great food, but also for the warm ambiance and the laid-back, friendly service. And the mood spreads to our guests - it’s like a chain reaction of good vibes.

MENU

This is the place where locals and visitors from all over the world meet and socialise with each other. Where they take a break from the everyday hustle. This is where we gather around the fire to share experiences, stories and to enjoy good food while meeting new and old friends. The meal is the focal point and in the kitchen we create exciting dishes close to our hearts. We call our cuisine “comfort food from every corner of the world. Food inspired by childhood memories, travelling and the shifting seasons that put a smile on your face and spreads joy, love and comfort. At Campfire we use the elemental force of fire and extract the flavours of the flames. Here the fire is crackling together with the sound of good conversations, laughter and music.

The Voice of Adventure Photographer: Sofia Lindblom

Born into a keen outdoors family, Husky Podcast aka Magnus Ormestad was introduced to camping, hiking and outdoors exploring at a very early age. Little did he know then, that this lifestyle and passion would inspire his future choice of career and as a consequence, a new adventure-seeking generation. After school, Magnus started out as many of us; he travelled, went off to university, and subsequently started to work. He describes this time as ”a confused period”, working in different jobs that he did not really enjoy, struggling to find a meaning with the dreariness of everyday life. Finding himself back at the drawing table, Magnus came up with an entirely different plan; to use this very frustration and his love for the outdoors, and turn it into something that could potentially help people in a similar situation. Today, Magnus runs his own podcast – Husky – where he interviews bold personalities, entrepreneurs and global expeditioners who, in one way or another, challenge the conventional way of living. Hi Magnus, tell our readers about Husky Podcast! I came up with the idea six years ago. As I myself had a hard time accepting the concept of the working-nine-to-five life, my vision was quite clear; a podcast where I meet with and interview people who all have one thing in common: They challenge the everyday routine, and instead choose to follow their passion. I am very grateful that I can make a living out of this today. Which interview is the most memorable one? I’ve performed more than 200 interviews with so many interesting people, so it’s hard to choose just one. The meeting with Andreas Fransson, who tragically died in an avalanche accident in Chile only a year after my interview with him, of course had a big impact on me. Another memorable meeting was with Gary Fisher, who co-invented the mountain bike in the late 1970s. Fredrika Ek, who cycled around the world for three years, is definitely one of the most inspiring people I’ve met. Where do the interviews take place? Here and there. I do most of the interviews in my studio, at Acast. But since I got in touch with Downtown Camper, I did a number of live interviews with an audience here, including after works and recordings, and it’s starting to feel like a second home. Just the fact that I can be in the very heart of the city and still have access to a campfire – now that’s right up my alley! What’s the most fun part of your job? To get to know such incredibly inspiring individuals who dare to challenge the mainstream way of life. The interview format is very intimate and laid-back, which I think is important. Thanks to all these meetings, Husky Podcast has been very developing for me too: It gives me courage to try new things and it seems, my listeners feel the same way. I often get incredibly sweet emails from people who have been inspired to do outstanding things because they listened to my podcast. To get that kind of feedback from unknown people is such a reward for me, and is definitely the best thing about what I do. And your own favourite adventure? There’s a very fine line between an adventure and a holiday these days. But thanks to my podcast, I had some fantastic trips: Boating and skiing around Svalbard and Iceland, a glacier safety course up in Kebnekaise [Sweden’s highest peak, Ed.], and swimrun challenges in the Mediterranean. But you don’t really have to travel wide and far: There’s an invitation for adventure around every corner, if you are just open to receive it. As a hotel guest, listen to Husky Podcast from your in-room TV. The podcast is also available on huskypodcast.com. For updates and news, follow Magnus on Instagram at @huskypodcast.

Below five selected hotspots as marked on the map. You can find all these hotspots and more on our website, on your in-room entertainment system, on Google Maps and the guides are also available as podcasts on iTunes.

1. Spökslottet, Haunted Spot Drottninggatan 116, City Centre “The most classic of all Stockholm´s haunted houses, so much so that it is actually officially named Spökslottet, “the haunted castle”. Built in the early 18th century by a wealthy German merchant it has enjoyed a ghostly reputation for well over 200 years. Sightings of a grey lady have been numerous, as have inexplicable cold spots and a general feeling of unease, and while conducting an exorcism some time during the 19th century, a priest is said to have been thrown out of a window and broken his legs on the pavement below.” – Petter Inedahl, writer and ghost connoisseur

2. Åva Skatepark, Skate Spot Åva Gymnasium, Täby

2

“This is my favourite skatepark, located just next to Åva Gymnasium in Täby. I like the style of the backyard pool; the tiles, the concrete edge, the obstacles, stairs, and the death box where the water would go out - it’s just as if you were in a real pool. It also has a smaller, street-style area with a kickbike park just next to it. It’s a beautiful place.”

2

– Jörgen Brennicke, skater and photographer

3. Second Sunrise, Denim Spot Katarina Bangata 69, Södermalm “This is one of my personal favourite denim stores. They have a great selection of jeans from Japan to USA, all raw denim. Some days they also have indigo dying courses you can attend. In the back of the store they have old sewing machines where they tailor make jeans using old fabrics. One section in the store is dedicated for vintage denim: They always have 60´s jeans and older stuff for sale. I started to collect vintage denim together with Douglas, who is one of the owners at Second Sunrise. Don’t miss this store!”

5

– Viktor Fredbäck, denim enthusiast & collector

4. Långholmen, Outdoor Spot Långholmen, Södermalm

3

“Kayaking under the bridges of Stockholm, you will discover the beautiful city from the water. Get up early in the morning, grab a kayak and slide on the water next to the streets while the city wakes up. On the small and picturesque island of Långholmen you will also find walking paths and open-air cafés in the summer.” – Erika Rosenbaum, health coach

5. Kungsträdgården, Selfie Spot Kungsträdgårdsgatan, City Centre

1

“In Kungsträdgården you will find the most amazing cherry blossom that bloom a couple of weeks between April and May. It is the most beautiful sight and packed with people. The trees are a bit of a miracle in our very cool Scandinavian climate. Take a selfie under the flowers and enjoy watching the number of likes on your Instagram pic go up. I can guarantee that they will.” – Daniel Paris, blogger, lecturer and TV profile

The Stockholm Survival Guide SPRING EDITION

Stockholm is famous for its stunning architecture, the cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan, its Baltic Sea archipelago, freezing temperatures, as well as a host of modern and historical attractions. What’s less known are the quirky cultural nuances, which make Sweden so wonderfully unique. Here are seven cultural insights for our newest residents and visitors. Funny words and phrases There are many mesmerising sights to absorb when walking the streets of Stockholm, not least the handsome men and women - everyone is beautiful. But it won’t be long before the hilarious named road signs and funny phrases catch your attention. For all us non-Swedes the sight of ’infart’ (a parking lot entrance), ’utfart’ (exit), ’fartkontroll’ (speed control), and ’slutstation’ (end station), Willy’s (supermarket) is enough to send us into a fit of giggles. And the funny words don’t stop there! There are many words, which confused, could lead to some very embarrassing situations. If a Swede asks you “sex hos mig” (sex/six at my place), you might want to check their intentions. However, the chances are they just want you to come over at 6 o’clock, as sex means two things, the number 6 and yes, sex. They probably seem preoccupied with ladies underwear, continually referring to things as ‘bra’, but this simply means ‘good’. Saying they need to ‘kiss’ (pee) when they actually just need a wee. It’s all very confusing but adds a comical element to learning Swedish. Need-to-know house rules If you’ve walked the streets of Stockholm during the winter months, you’ll know how dirty it gets once the rain and snow starts, especially when the gritters come out. So it’s not surprising then, that as a general rule, all Swedish homes expect you to remove your shoes. If like me, a British expat, you’re used to traipsing your way around houses in your outdoor shoes, then this is a rule to get acquainted with fast. This rule also extends to gyms, where they expect you to walk to the gym wearing your outdoor shoes and then change into your pair of indoor training shoes upon arriving. Yes, you’re going to need that extra muscle to carry your gym bag! You may have also noticed, on arriving in your hotel room, the single duvet

covers. The Swedish aren’t killers of romance, I promise. In the freezing minus temperatures that Sweden gets to, in Stockholm an average low of -4 degrees in the winter, do you want your partner stealing the bed cover? We didn’t think so. Single duvets are all about survival. Naked ambition Swedes are way more comfortable with nudity than just about anywhere else in the world (well, them and the other sauna loving nations). In any other country, if you stripped off naked and entered the sauna, you’d be met with shrieks of surprise and blushing red faces. It’s not uncommon in Sweden, however, to strip off and go skinny dipping in the open water with your friends and family. However, be forewarned, there are designated spots; you can’t just strip off anywhere. It’s also not uncommon to see men and women, completely naked, having a good old chit chat in the changing rooms at gyms and swimming houses, seemingly unfazed by their nakedness. But don’t fear though, Downtown Camper has a strictly ‘bathing suit only’ policy, so you won’t be bathing in your birthday suit on your visit. Get social, join a club Sweden can be a hard place to settle as a newcomer, particularly in the long, dark and cold winter months. As spring’s now approaching, it’s a perfect time to join a club and get meeting other expats and sociable Swedes. Get a taster of run club life with Ssideline City Run Club, who run every Tuesday evening from Downtown Camper. Alternatively, you could try yoga with YesYoga, followed by cocktails at Campfire, every Sunday. Or why not join one of the many activities on Meetup? A community made out of sharing experiences and making new friends. With over 260 meetups located in Stockholm, there are a large variety of get-togethers to choose from; you can even start your own. Swedish godis Sweet tooth? In most countries pick n’ mix is intended mainly for children. Not in Sweden. No, the Swedes are mad for their candy with usually two or more aisles in the supermarket entirely dedicated

to every type of candy you could possibly dream of. However, this is usually limited to Saturday’s ‘Lördagsgodis’ (Saturday candy), when the majority of candy is purchased. Swedes consume approximately 16 kilograms of candy per person per year. That’s a whole lot of candy! Unlike other nations, at Easter, the Swedes do not celebrate with branded chocolate eggs but beautifully decorated paper shell eggs, crammed full of sweets. It’s surprising then that Swedes are some of the healthiest people on the planet. Systembolaget If you’ve ever been invited to an inexperienced expat’s housewarming party, you’re probably familiar with that last-minute panicked message. This is when the host realises they haven’t gone to the only store in Sweden you can purchase alcohol from, Systembolaget, and lo and behold now need you to bring your own drinks. Happens all the time! One friend of mine invited her friends for a ’prosecco and pancakes evening’, which was a great idea until she forgot to purchase the prosecco in time. Sweden is highly regulated when it comes to the sale of alcoholic drinks stronger than 3.5%. Systembolaget is government-owned and has the monopoly of sales in Sweden. The minimum purchase age at Systembolaget is 20, but 18 in licensed restaurants and bars. So take your ID and be sure to check the opening times. Queue like a Swede Like the British, Swedes are no strangers to queuing. However, Sweden has turned this into an Olympic sport. The Swedish are sticklers for rationality and order, and the queuing system is no exception; there are seemingly queues for everything. While most Swedes won’t confront you, you will feel the sting of their angry stares should you make the ultimate mistake of pushing in line. Or just simply forgetting to take one of the many numbered tickets you find in any number of shops. Our advice - always check upon entering a supermarket, electrical shop, doctor’s surgery, vets, Migrationsverket or a post office, you get my point, if there’s a ticket machine. The Nest is no ordinary spa. It has been designed to promote your well-being on a 360-degree level. Have a truly Scandinavian experience: Sweat out your stress toxins in the sauna, shaped as a giant bird’s nest, and head outside to the heated rooftop pool, over-looking the royal castle, the city hall and the harbour. The Nest Wellness is a place to hang out, relax and unwind with friends after a busy, fast-pace day of adventures in the city. On the rooftop of Downtown Camper, you will find The Nest Wellness. Up here, the air is clear and the city noise dissolves. Leave behind the distractions of digital screens and busy traffic, and feel the vibe while admiring the magnificent view of the city. - We want to offer something entirely new. A holistic and modern approach where exercise, relaxation, educational practices and well-being all go together. Creativity is essential: Many spas can feel a bit intimidating and formal, but we want to create an unpretentious and laid-back wellness in an urban environment. It needs to be both accessible and fun, says Malin Lemchen, Wellness Manager at The Nest. Sustainability The guiding thought behind the concept in The Nest, is to encourage a more sustainable lifestyle. Today, we live in a digital world where we deal with different, seemingly unnatural stress factors that affect our health and the way we socialise with others. The inside and the outside are connected, and the holistic wellness discipline recognises that the body and soul are equally important.

Massage Why not start your day at The Nest with a classic Swedish massage to get in the right mood? The Nest offers massage focusing on different parts of the body, performed by authorised massage therapists. Sauna Release Twice a day, and at no additional cost, you can take part in the Sauna Release, led by one of the staff members in The Nest. In this truly unique and relaxing activity, yoga is combined with breathing exercises and aroma therapy, inside the sauna. The Sauna Release is 20 minutes long and all wellness guests can join, without signing up in advance. DIY Treatments The ”do-it-yourself” treatments are sold in the reception at The Nest Wellness. As part of the sustainable concept, they are both educational and fun and allow you to get professional guidence and tips that you can apply to your everyday routine: A few simple steps of lathering, scrubbing, massaging and moisturising let you reconnect your mind and body. Meraki Facial Ritual Don’t miss this new, fun and social ritual, where our spa therapist guides you in how to take care of your skin. In this educating and rejuvenating session, you are guided step by step in an easyto-follow ritual that is sure to freshen and brighten up your skin. After the session, you will have the know-how to perform the ritual on yourself. The products are provided from Meraki, and you will get a small gift to take home.

Snacks & Drinks If you get a bit peckish, help yourself to the dried and fresh fruit, pickles, olives and tea, offered inside the wellness area. If you prefer something stronger and more invigourating, the wellness staff will take your order: The adjacent lounge offers beer, wine and bubbles during the day, and delicious cocktails in the evening. House Rules The Nest is our urban retreat and our guests’ refuge from the fast-pace city life, hence we encourage a mobile-free environment. You are not allowed to make phone calls here, but if you want to take a picture as a memory, you are more than welcome. We love children but up here they are not our main focus – we have other facilities where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to hang out, relax and regain energy. Young adults from 16 and up are welcome to visit The Nest. Last but not least: Remember to have fun and to stay curious. Admission fee Hotel guests - 395 sek External guests - 595 sek We ask all our guests to pre-book their first visit. As a hotel guest, you are then welcome to use the wellness area throughout your stay, upon availability. Towels, bathrobes and slippers are provided. The bathrobe and slippers are yours to take home. MORE THAN WELLNESS The laid-back concept and ”surprising service” at The Nest appeals to many. Yoga Girl is no exception.

EDUCATIONAL The DIY treatments are part of the sustainable focus in The Nest. The knowledge you aquire will be useful in your everyday life.

What’s a Sustainable Lifestyle? We asked Bella, Downtown Camper’s yoga instructor, to describe a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, in her own words: ”For me, a sustainable lifestyle means to unite and integrate body, mind and soul. I believe all parts are connected and affect each other. This translates to finding a workout routine and diet that suits me on a personal level, that I can maintain in the long run and feel good about. I try to have a daily routine and limit the time I spend on my smartphone and social media. Another part is exploring what lies beyond the physical level, by watching my thoughts, emotions and behaviour. By accepting what is, I can make conscious choices that are in line with my own truth and my current life situation. I think that through personal development, we invest not only in our own sustainability, but we also have the power to contribute on a longer term. If we can make a positive impact on the next generation, we can create a more sustainable future.” Join Bella for Hatha yoga in The Nest every Monday and Friday. More details on page 9.
