Four Paws Food Bank bridges gaps between animal welfare services The Four Paws Food Bank, a non-profit organization, is Kamloops’ first pet centered food bank. While they provide food and supplies, Bonnie McBride, the founder of Four Paws, strives to support, empower and inform pet owners. Community connectedness is also a key ingredient to Bonnie’s work. “When Four Paws first started, it was as simple as calling other organizations and offering to collaborate. There is such an invested willingness and investment in working together.” After over 20 years of volunteering with the BCSPCA, Bonnie said that she felt like there were small gaps in the services within the collective animal rescue and welfare network. With support and supplies from the SPCA, Bonnie went down to the Salvation Army food truck on 4th Ave and St Paul. After one Tuesday spent there, she’s returned on a weekly basis. Bonnie credits the Kamloops Branch of the SPCA as an enormous support system and an excellent resource; the organization plays a significant role in helping Four Paws provide consistent service across Kamloops and surrounding areas. “SPCA lets us load up with as much food, treats, and supplies on a weekly basis. The staff is so supportive.” Due to pet over-population, housing issues and other concerns, the need for the SPCA’s services

with other animal welfare resources. “If literacy, transportation or mental health issues prevented someone from surrendering a pet or dealing with services, we step in and act as a bridge for them.” To Bonnie, the outreach work is especially fulfilling. She describes Four Paws as an accessible, lowbarrier service. They also collaborate with JUMP, Pit Stop Kitchen, The Emerald Center and The New Life Mission. By providing food, supplies and information Four Paws helps pet owners take better care of their animals—improving quality of life for all involved. “We’ve helped people make difficult decisions about their pets in safe and healthy ways, rather than them reaching a crisis state and having to abandon them. We’ve also had over 100 ‘pets in beds’ nights in emergency foster and handed out thousands of pounds of food.” Bonnie says, “The goal is only to fill in the gaps in services that are already available through other agencies. Four Paws will continue to contribute in that way alone, with as few resources as needed, so that everyone can continue doing their great work.” Interested in donating? Drop off food or supplies at the North Shore SPCA, the downtown SPCA thrift store or We Love Dogs daycare. Check out the Facebook page for more information. Alicia Ashcroft, Freelance

ECHO STARGAZER DEAR TAURUS: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You’re almost out of the woods and into the light of a bright new day. Prepare for your upcoming luck with a new haircut or dress. A subtle change in appearance is all that’s needed to swing the pendulum of love in your favor. DEAR GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21) A dynamic burst of energy has you cleaning up the past while simultaneously speeding into the future. You have a chance to start again as the slate is wiped clean from a recent mistake. Time is not on your side but a creative effort requires your attention. DEAR CANCER: (June 22 - July 22) New faces in your social network raise an optimistic flag for the future but don’t run off with the circus quite yet. Trouble has arrived from an unlikely source and you’re not sure how to deal with it. Put on your best smile when adversity hits and let your fans help out. DEAR LEO: (July 23 - Aug 22)You have a fresh start publically so make the most of the weekly energy and get out, say hello and push your personal agenda. You might bump friends the wrong way as they get used to your new popularity but success hinges on shining as brightly as you can. DEAR VIRGO: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) A recent outburst may have blown your chance with a new friend from distant shores. These things happen so pick yourself up and dust yourself off. You’ll have a second chance with someone new. DEAR LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) A new job or chance to impress the boss opens doors to a financial windfall. Travel and higher learning both travel a bumpy road. Partners slip sideways in an unexpected twist yet again but love is arriving to smooth the day. DEAR SCORPIO: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) A new chapter in a storybook romance leads to an adventure for the ages. Perfection is never in the cards but true love can be. Personal finances have hit a messy disruption but the plan can still succeed with creativity. Love is waiting at the gym. DEAR SAGITTARIUS: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’re still not feeling your usual jovial and optimistic self and partners aren’t exactly helping you look on the bright side. A small change in habits leads to bigger events than expected. Money arrives in the mail. DEAR CAPRICORN: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’ll have to move slow and definitely double check the paperwork but it’s a good week to being a new and creative project. Turn over a new leaf in romance and go out for some fun. It’s time to forgive and move one. DEAR AQUARIUS: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Romance hits the skids but you’re busy in other areas anyways. A new beginning at home signals a change in life and a shift for the better. It’s the last week to make money before attraction moves on. DEAR PISCES: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Recent themes continue to repeat but this time positive overtones add fortune to the mix. Watch for accidents at home. Money is about to stream back in but you don’t want expenses to outweigh your rewards. DEAR ARIES: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You have a new start financially so make sure your course is set and you hit the week running. You’ll have extra energy available to work the phones and try something new. Love is stronger than you realize. Discovering gravity
Physics Teacher: “Isaac Newton was sitting under a tree when an apple fell on his head and he discovered gravity. Isn’t that wonderful?” Student: “Yes sir, if he had been sitting in class looking at books like us, he wouldn’t have discovered anything.”
