Kamloops gets spooky for Hallowe’en

It’s the time of year again when we overcome fear and celebrate all things that go bump in the night, and there’s no shortage of frightfully fun activities for all the ghosts and ghouls in Kamloops to partake in over the next week to celebrate Halloween.

Boo at the Zoo, the beloved Halloween celebration hosted by the BC Wildlife Park east of Kamloops, will once again be back from Friday Oct. 27 to Sunday Oct. 29 from 5-9 pm.

The entire family is welcome to head over to the park, which will offer a whole host of activities for young and old. KPHES releases wildfire report The Kamloops Physicians for a Healthy Environment Society (KPHES) has released a report on how the Summer 2017 wildfire smoke events affected health and quality of life in Kamloops.

During the 2017 wildfires British Columbia had the most ever hectares of forest burned in recorded history and Kamloops experienced the highest fine particle concentrations in the air during July and August since records began in 1998. This occurred despite the major fires being 60km or more from the city.

The report examines the results of an online survey of the general population in Kamloops from Aug. 7 to Sept. 4 to look in broad terms at the subjective symptoms the public was experiencing.

Several conclusions were reached based on the survey results and the review of relevant literature. The report indicated that the wildfire smoke significantly impact-

ed the health and healthy lifestyles of the people in Kamloops. The air quality during these unprecedented wildfires had direct physical, psychological, social, and economic impacts on citizens, the report concluded.

In the report, health authorities were encouraged to develop a system of monitoring the health of the population of BC for both short-term and longterm health impacts of wildfire smoke. It was suggested

Whole Note is a community music program offered throughout the year to students who face financial barriers. It supports youth in three primary ways: Fully-funded music lessons, enrollment in the Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music, and providing opportunities to learn and perform with local music groups.

ticles produced by wildfires.

It added the province should also develop guidelines for those who work outside and enforce protection measures.

WolfPack volleyballers reunite in China Two of the top men’s volleyball players ever to compete for Thompsons Rivers University have reunited, this time in China.

John Gordon “Gord” Perrin from Creston, BC, and Kevin Tillie of Cagnes Sure de Mer, France, were teammates on the TRU WolfPack volleyball team back in 2009-10.

After moving on from university volleyball, the pair turned professional, joining Arkas Spor in Turkey’s Izmir, where they were coached by Canadian national team coach Glenn Hoag and

won championships in 2013 and 2015. Now, the two are going to be teammates with Beijing Volleyball, the WolfPack announced in a press release. An introductory presser for the pair was held in Beijing last week.

Wolfpack Head Coach Pat Hennelly, speaking in a press release, said, “[I’m] not sure what the league is like but I do know that they pay very well. They bought out Gord’s contract and then doubled it! I am sure it is similar for Kevin. The other bonus for playing in China is that it is a shorter

season. They will save some wear and tear on their bodies.”

Perrin was in Kamloops this past summer to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Wolfpack’s bronze medal win at the 2008 CIS Nationals in Laval, Quebec. Perrin was named the TRU Athlete of the Year for the 2009-10 season. Perrin was also a member of the Canadian team that finished 5th at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Trumpeting Canada 150 The Kamloops Symphony Orchestra (KSO) is presenting the brilliant sound of the trumpet and a celebration of Canada 150 with O Canada, a Noran Mas-

terworks Performance on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Sagebrush Theatre.

The program includes two newly commissioned works by Canadian composers in

celebration of Canada 150. The first is Tobin Stokes’ Sesquie for Canada’s 150, one of 40 words commissioned in collaboration with the Toronto Symphony

and partner orchestras hailing from every province to celebration Canada’s sesquicentennial. The second is John Estacio’s Trumpet Concerto, commissioned in collaboration with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the Edmonton Symphony, and the Calgary Philharmonic.

The featured soloist will be trumpeter Mark D’Angelo, a native of Vancouver with a Master of Music Degree from McGill. This concert also marks the start for the KSO’s new music director, Dina Gilbert, who is recognized for her energy, precision and versatility.

East meets west : A relationshp with Gord

For the past week tributes have been pouring out for Gord Downie, the legendary frontman of The Tragically Hip who lost his battle with terminal brain cancer on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at age 53.

What I found most striking was the many stories from Canadians coast to coast to coast who felt they had formed a personal relationship with Downie and the band, which included rhythm guitarist Paul Langlois, lead guitarist Rob Baker, bassist Gord Sinclair, and drummer Johnny Fay. The group had been active for more than three decades (most of my life, if I’m being honest) and touched countless people during that time. I’ve seen these stories in my personal life too, from an old roommate and co-worker who worshipped the band, to a good friend who recalls hearing The Hip at a funeral.

My relationship with Downie began like most people my age around the time the smash Trouble at the Henhouse came out in 1996, and Ahead by a Century dominated the airwaves (if I recall correctly, the song finished 1st on CIFM’s Top 100 countdown that year).

Coliseum the year before, and can still vividly remember the amazing laser light show during Gift Shop and the seemingly 20-minute version of At the Hundredth Meridian.

I’ve been a fan of the band ever since, though will admit that I lapsed for a time over the last decade, until the release of their final album, Man Machine Poem, in 2016. In my life, there’s always been albums that defined various eras, and Man Machine Poem recalls those final worrisome months in Turkey (it came out just a month before an attempted military coup in the country).

I would listen to the album daily on my travels through Istanbul, delving back into that connection with Downie and the band - and by extension my country - I had established in my youth. When news broke of his terminal

cancer just a few months previous, I had been shocked but not as mournful as I thought I’d be. I think every one of us with a story is mournful now.

Like many of you I also watched that final concert from Kingston, Ontario last year.

However, I didn’t get the opportunity to head down to Riverside Park and watch the stream on the big screen like many Kamloops residents. Instead I was up til the wee hours of the morning, watching alone on my laptop in our apartment in Istanbul, feeling contemplative as I shared in a national moment of sorrowful celebration.

Since then it’s been more a matter of “when” than “if” when it came to saying goodbye to Downie, as we all knew the end was coming but couldn’t really prepare ourselves.

Some have asked if Downie deserves this sort of reverence,

but Downie’s evocative lyrics, immense humanity, and devotion to social causes leave no doubt he’s been permanently woven into the cultural tapestry of our nation. He touched countless lives across the country not through bravado or ego but through love, respect, honesty, and, of course, music.

“Music brings people together,” Downie said in 2014. “So my function in anything I do is to help bring people closer in.” In that regard Gord, you more than succeeded. The man never wanted to be an icon, but he still found his way into our hearts anyways.

Dr. Padova’s Halloween Carnival set to debut Of the many Halloween events across the City of Kamloops during the end of October, few had been more beloved or popular than Dr. Padova’s Haunted House, held annually at Tranquille Farm Fresh.

It was perhaps one of the creepiest experiences to be found in the city, made all the more frightening by the setting. The more than 150-yearold site housed a tuberculosis ward once upon a time, as well as a hospital for the mentally ill, naturally leading to rumours among locals about actual hauntings at the site.

A visit to Dr. Padova’s Haunted House often began mundanely enough with a stamp on your hand and a hot chocolate, but a quick chill moved down your spine when you saw those decades-old buildings awash with an eerie green glow after coming out of a spooky corn maze. Next came a deranged tour guide to walk you through darkened halls filled with danger around every corner. The alleged dark side of the building’s

history is revealed before things take a turn for the worse and the group must make its way to safety or risk becoming another one of the doctor’s victims.

This year however, the crew at Tranquille Farm Fresh has decided to think big and change things up. After five years the popular and genuinely frightening corn maze is gone, with Annette McLeod of Tranquille Farm Fresh saying, “They are on to bigger and better things.” “ In its place is a brand new production in collaboration with Chimera Theatre called Dr. Padova’s Halloween Carnival. The production described itself as an epic multimedia adventure as visitors attempt to solve the murder of Tranquille’s cook in Padova’s epic buildings and tunnels.

The show will run from Thursday, Oct. 26 to Saturday, Oct. 28 from 5:30-10:30 pm at Tranquille Farm Fresh, 4600 Tranquille Road. Tickets are $35 per person and are limited per hour.

KALS offers stimulating fall semester This fall it’s not just the kids who are heading back to school, as the Kamloops Adult Learners Society (KALS) is offering nearly 40 courses to cater to any interest, and there are still a number of stimulating classes coming up in November. KALS offers a wide variety of courses for older people looking to continue down the lifelong path of learning.

The Digital Age and Its Impact on Individuals & Society is a two-class course running on Tuesday, Nov. 7 and Tuesday, Nov. 14. During this paradigm-shifting class instructor Dr. Bob Morrow will explore the Digital Revolution, an era which began in the 1980s with the advancement of technology from analog to digital that continues today. Dr. Morrow will answer questions about the Digital Revolution, sometimes called the Third Industrial Revolution, including how it really began, how it impacts us today, and how it changes the way we view the world and ourselves.

Another two-class program running in November is Understanding Addiction and Recov-

ery, taught by instructor Carol Todd. The course is intended to help broaden understanding of substance use, misuse and dependence, the factors that contribute to these, and what help there is for people who choose to minimize the harms related to their substance use.

Information will also be provided about the impact on family and friends. Understanding Addiction and Recovery classes will be held Wednesday, Nov. 15 and Wednesday, Nov. 22.

KALS is also offering a number of one-class courses in November. One is Fact from Fiction: How to Discern Real, Fake, or Biased News taught by instructor Kathy Gaynor Wednesday, Nov. 8. Fake news is a topic we hear about a lot in today’s society, and this class will cover what fake news is, provide examples, and show what to watch out for.

These are just three of a multitude of classes on offer by KALS this fall. For information on how to register for the upcoming winter semester, go to kals.ca. The registration fee is $15 annually, while individual courses may also include a fee.

Be Bear Aware There are several different types of large wild animals native to the Kamloops area, and hikers should learn all they can about each one and where they might be encountered. Wild animals are naturally unpredictable, and they may consider a sudden encounter with a human to be a danger to them. Different animals will react differently, so if you do find yourself face-toface with one you will need to know which set of tactics to use.

The most familiar, and perhaps the most misunderstood, of the large wild animals around Kamloops is the black bear. There have been more than 14000 complaints about black bears in BC this year and a number of these have involved bearhuman conflicts on the hiking trail. These conflicts are almost invariably caused by inappropriate human behavior – they are never the fault of the bear.

Black bears are naturally shy and will avoid people if given the chance, so if you see one at a distance, do not approach him.

If you encounter a black bear on the trail, give him plenty of room. Black bears have a strong sense of personal space – a distance that varies from bear to bear and from which they won’t back away, and if you end up

inside that space, you are likely to experience a combination of highly intimidating behaviors.

You are entirely responsible for your own safety if this happens, and to manage a human-bear conflict successfully you must be able to communicate with the bear in a way that he understands.

Almost all bear attacks are defensive bluffs based on fear, and many of the behaviors that appear ferocious are really expressions of the bear’s own anxiety.

So make yourself appear physically harmless; face the bear but avoid direct eye contact, talk calmly to him to identify yourself as a human and not another animal, then slowly begin to back away. Do not turn away from him, and NEVER RUN. This takes nerve, but remember that the bear is defending something; cubs perhaps, a food source or just personal space, and is not making a predatory attack – black bears do not prey on humans. Once there is enough distance between you, the bear will no longer feel threatened.

Leave the area immediately following the encounter, preferably the way you came in. If you choose to detour around the bear and continue your hike you may very well face him again on your way back.
