The Boogie is accessible to all Back in 1998 Jo Berry put together an event to bring awareness to the idea that “Movement is Change,” in honour of the loss of her mother. This first event was an all women’s event where funds raised went to The Shop Program, Women’s Lending Circle and the BPW club. Since its first steps, Boogie the Bridge has grown leaps and bounds to be a community event attended by over 2,400 people. New for the 2014 Boogie is more awareness surrounding accessibility. The subcategory dubbed “Accessible Boogie” is an initiative within the Boogie the Bridge organization that is directed towards making the event and our community accessible to anyone. On April 27, along with the regular Boogie events, is also the Mini Boogie which is their one-kilometer kids event. Children nine and under are able to participate in this fun filled shorter version of what their parents are participating in. Registration includes a t-shirt, race bib and a McDonalds Treat at the end of their race. There is also the fivekilometer course, which is specifically designed to be accessible to anyone. Ben Chobater of the Boogie committee is excited and proud of this new addition to the Boo-

gie. “People of all abilities are welcomed,” says Ben. “This is a community minded initiative.” Ben has been brought on by the Boogie organization to bring attention to how much more accessible the course is. Last year the previous course director redesigned a new course. “He had someone in his family or close to him with accessibility issues,” comments Ben. “He had this in mind when designing the course, which is now completely accessible every step of the way. If the course has people coming off the side walk, this happens in a place where there is a curb cut.” No matter your mode of transportation, the Boogie wants you out on the streets of Kamloops. “There is no rule against any type of assisted mobility that is required to get around like a wheelchair or walker,” Ben adds. This is truly an event where everyone is welcome and embraced. If you have been nervous in the past to participate, there is no reason for you to not sign up anymore. Accessibility is a subject close to Ben’s heart. “Sooner or later everyone will have to utilize accessibly aspects of our community,” he adds. “Whether it be family member or ourselves, it is - continued on page 2

Headie holiday

Some locals got together a MacDonald Park to celebrate 4:20, a counterculture holiday in North America to celebrate cannabis.

Bearing Witness at Kamloops Art Gallery The Kamloops Arts Council and the Phoenix Centre have collaborated to create an accessible art show for emerging and professional local artists and creative minds. Bearing Witness runs April 24 to May 17 at the KAC Main Gallery in the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre, 7 Seymour Street West. The opening reception will take place on Friday, April 25 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Admission is free; all are welcome to join in celebrating the participating artists and their thought-provoking work. Art has always been a medium that can heal and express one’s thoughts and points of view on

a subject. The theme of Bearing Witness is to show various interpretations of substance use, and its effects on a community, a society, a family, a circle of friends, a body and/or on the mind. Bearing Witness is meant to express what it can be like for family members or friends to watch a struggling loved one, or even for an individual portraying what it is like for him/herself going through past/present personal issues and/ or the healing process. This is an open exhibition; all artwork entered, in all mediums, is being accepted. “We’ve invited work not only from local artists, but also from those in our com-

munity who’ve never shown their work before,” says KAC Gallery coordinator Hope Mikal. “Phoenix Centre is excited about this creative partnership that makes evident that substance use reaches far beyond the boundaries of one individual’s struggle; it is an issue that affects us all,” says Sian Lewis, executive director of the Phoenix Centre. “Sharing your artwork is a key part of the creative process, and it can be a crucial part of healing, too,” says Kathy Sinclair, executive director of the Kamloops Arts Council. “We invite the community to bear witness to the transformative power of art.”

The hardest part about making a change is taking the first step. The Kamloops YMCA/YWCA has a program that can help your family become healthier than ever. MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition… Do it) empowers children and families to become fitter and healthier. Parents/caregivers join their children in each session to learn about how to choose healthier foods and spend more time being physically active. Keeping kids healthy is hard but the Kamloops Y will show you how small changes can make a difference. The next Kamloops Y MEND program intake begins April 25.

Meghan Drew, MEND program coordinator at the Kamloops YMCA/YWCA, is excited about this new program offered in Kamloops. “It is a program in partnership with the Childhood Obesity Foundation and the Vancouver Y,” comments Meghan. “It is an amazing program which provides families with different tools to adopt healthy lifestyles.” “A family that plays together, stays together,” adds Meghan. “You only have to commit to four hours a week. Our lives are busy and this program brings people back to grassroots. It gets families back on track for life and a healthy lifestyle.”

MEND is free, fun and interactive and supports the entire family in adopting a healthy lifestyle. “Families have loved it. They say it really empowers their children,” Meghan says. “We have been getting really, really positive feedback.” If you are interested in undergoing the intake process please contact Meghan at mdrew@kamloopsy.org or call 250-372-7725. There are five family spaces left for children seven to 13. The program runs April 25 to June 28 on Thursdays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and Saturdays from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Ashley Demedeiros

- continued from front going to be important to us some day.” With the Boogie becoming more accessible to members in the community, it shows how Kamloops has been changing for the better. “It is wild having 2,500 people on Victoria Street. There is some serious energy,” says Ben. “Jo gets the whole crowd dancing. It is the community of Kamloops coming together, it is something spiritual.” This race isn’t about running your fastest marathon; it is about coming together as a community and supporting organizations such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Kamloops and ASK Wellness. For the first time Boogie is partnering with two local agencies that provide a wonderful service in the Kamloops community. The programs fit well together and the Boogie organization announced that the new Charities of Choice for 2014 and 2015 will be the Canadian Mental Health Association Youth Clubhouse along with the Family Tree Family Centre. What are you doing on Sunday? Hopefully you are participating in one of the largest events of the year, Boogie the Bridge. “It is pretty fantastic. No matter your age or abilities or barriers, the Boogie is a welcoming group,” Ben comments. “It is all about the community; it is a great event.” For more information please visit boogiethebridge.com. Get out and boogie, Kamloops! Ashley Demedeiros

with the nonprofit Real Diaper Association to participate in the fourth annual Great Cloth Diaper Change international event taking place on Saturday April 26. The change will happen at Riverside Park at 11:00am. The event will run from 10:00am to 2:00pm. This year the change will be part of a

Brownstone themed dinner series BC Living Arts and the Brownstone Restaurant will be offering their second themed dinner series! The Italian Feast will be on May 2 and 4 at 6:00pm. Last month, their sold out six course meal entitled an “Evening with Julia Child” was filled with Julia’s recipes and was hosted by the boisterous Julia herself (played by Alan Corbishley). The

event was such a success, it was extended over two nights and the same can now be said for their next offering based on the movie “Big Night.” The May 4 seating is now sold out and so they have added the Friday evening on May 2. This six course Italian meal will be the centre of attention along with a theatrical and lively atmosphere that will

surely delight all in attendance, including their “special guest of honour”, whom they will keep a secret. Reservations can be made by calling the Brownstone Restaurant (118 Victoria St) at 250851-9939. Dress in your 50’s best and dinner will begin at 6:00 pm.

Get rid of old tires to fight mosquitoes The Thompson-Nicola Regional District, in conjunction with Mosquito Control Program contractor BWP Consulting Inc., is providing free, passenger tire drop-off opportunities in the municipalities of Chase, Barriere and Kamloops this spring. Because unwanted tires are prime mosquito breeding habitats, TNRD residents are encouraged to take any old passenger vehicle tires or transport tractor-trailer tires (no agricultural tires), with

or without rims, and drop them off for recycling on the following dates and locations between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm: Saturday April 26, Barriere Secondary School, Sunday April 27, Westsyde Senior Secondary School, Saturday May 3, Chase Secondary School and Sunday May 4, Dallas Elementary School. “Many people may not realize that just a small amount of water inside any old tires sitting around their property can

create the perfect breeding ground for mosquito larvae,” says BWP Contractor Cheryl Phippen. “By safely recycling these unwanted tires at any of these four free, drop-off locations you’ll remove opportunities for mosquitoes to reproduce around your home. That helps protect you, your family and neighbours from the nuisance insects and reduces the potential risk of spreading West Nile virus.”

On Sunday April 27 at St. Andrew’s on the Square is a Chamber Musicians of Kamloops event at 7:30 pm. “Openings” is a cello and piano collaboration Like spring’s new growth, the opening phrases of Ernest Bloch’s Méditation Hébraïque emerge from the deep lower registers of cello and piano into a glorious blossom of sound. This is how cellist Martin Krátký and pianist Daniela O’Fee begin their program, which marks their new musical partnership. Martin, who plays for both the Kamloops and Okanagan Symphony Orchestras, is known for his versatility and his intensely expressive virtuosity on his instrument. Martin joins pianist Daniela O’Fee who he met through Chamber Musicians of Kamloops. While their paths crossed casually for a few years, the time was ripe to forge their budding friendship and their common musical interests.

Save the date The United Way is hosting its Community Spirit Luncheon on May 26 from 12:00 pm to 1:30pm at the Coast Conference Centre. Mark Brand will be speaking at the luncheon. At only 37 years old, Mark is one of Vancouver’s most recognized social entrepreneurs. Successfully operating eight businesses in the downtown area, he has become a prominent example of a new generation of leadership. Information about tickets sales will be released soon.

Joyce Blair is the choice in Real Estate Joyce Blair of Royal LePage Kamloops Realty is kind of like the Wonder Woman of Real Estate; she is a heroine fighting for justice, love and peace in the house buying market. She uses her own Lasso of Truth to ensure that both buyers and sellers of property are looked after. Joyce Blair ensuring buyers get what they asked for and sellers are protected. Joyce has lived in Kamloops all her life. When she isn’t helping people buy or sell a home she is found out skiing or golfing. “I love working in Real Estate because I get to meet new people every day,” Joyce says. It is her personal connection and drive to use her expertise (or super powers) to help both buyers and sellers. “Buying a home is normally the largest financial investment that anyone will ever make. It can be an emotionally draining experience on both the buyer and seller.

I believe that I can alleviate most of that stress by having an honest and direct relationship with my clients. I let them know all the costs involved and exactly what they can expect from working with me,” comments Joyce. “When it comes to selling your house I can help people to have a nice transaction,” adds Joyce. “I help them by gathering all the information that will be readily available to any buyer that will want it to make a decision. I gather information such as lot size, measuring the home for them, land title charges, strata documents, fees, rules, special levies, depreciation, zoning, among many other things to help sellers be prepared in advance for a listing.” If you want someone in your corner when it comes to the biggest sale or investment of your life, look no further than Joyce

April 24, 2014 n 11

Your Horoscope TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Early in the week the flow is really good for you with both friends and partner(s). Then one of these people requests a stronger commitment. Right away you are challenged by new thoughts. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) There is a shift of your attention to matters of your personal history that may go back quite a long time. You will be looking inside yourself for meditative peace, answers to serious questions and encouragement from your source. CANCER (June 22-July 22) The new moon symbolizes new starts and fresh beginnings. Because the new moon occurs in the dark and is invisible, your new activity may not even be clear to you for a time. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Look for a slight shift in your path. It may look very small now, even unnoticeable. But this is the nubbin of a new branch on the tree. Such changes are often seen in hindsight, as a minor decision that ultimately reshapes your route. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Your new focus for the next two weeks will be mind expanding. You may be researching a new interest, gazing over travel brochures for your next adventure, or pursuing an interest in philosophy or religion. Love and social life have green lights. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) You dropped the ball on an important project in self-work during February. It created a type of vacuum within and prevents you from moving forward. Has your confidence waned? SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) You have carried so much stress over the last few months that you are similar to a ticking bomb. Circumstances in your work or a change in your life routine might press the button. All of this is hard on the body, so it may stop and refuse to go further until you rest. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) If you have been channeling your energy into a project that has positive value for many you may be receiving recognition and applause now. If, instead, you are working on something that is purely to glorify your ego, you will find the powers are fighting you every step of the way. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) You are bombarded by multiple problematic situations and you may be trying to control them all. Transformation is at hand if you will allow yourself to let go of part or all of it. Your body may rebel if you don’t. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) In case anyone attacks you on the road or via the law, you need to remain aware that you are in the right, or within legal parameters. Legal interests are favoured. Hold your ground. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) This is an ideal time to travel with another, to talk things over and stretch your perspective. It is also a good time for any activity connected to writing or education, whether learning or teaching. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) You may be totally tied up in knots during this period. You want to change things within the framework of your partnership(s), but it feels as though you dare not take the initiative to do so. Horoscopes courtesy of astrologer Michael Thiessen.
